We try to stick to White Rock hens just to keep things standardized. No one
likes to have a back order on a fowl delay things.

2013-07-31 Thread Ben West
Depends on the roof material.

Such a rig on the ~100year old wood/tarpaper roofs here in St. Louis would
probably cause a depression to form under the bucket. This is why I have
to use rather wide base under the cinderblocks, to spread the load across a
couple rafters.

Subject: [WISPA] Need small non-penetrating roof mount for single Nanostation +
5ft mast

Hello list,

I am setting up a PtP link between two gas stations for a client. I am going to
be using two Nanostation M5 units going about 1/2mi diagonally across a
highway. I'd like to mount them to a 5ft mast then to a non-penetrating roof
mount, as the only place with clear line-of-sight is on the roof of both gas
stations. Flat roof without much of a lip to mount an antenna to. All of my
Google searches come up with much larger non-penetrating roof mounts, 3' or
wider, which are designed for much larger and taller masts. Also very pricey,
$150 or more each.

Does anyone make a small non-penetrating roof mount, say 2ft square out of
metal with an attachment to hold a 5ft mast or including a 5ft mast? Maybe a
single cinder/cement block to weigh it down would be all that is needed. Won't
ever need to go higher.

Or do you have another suggestion for mounting?

Thanks in advance,

Josh

B VERY careful when using treated wood on a metal roof. It will attack
and eat right through it.
I caught my first do-it-yourself mount before it got through the roof of
a multi-million dollar house.

At a minimum use a roof pad. If you can't find one for cheap then ask
around your friends with horses. Use a stall mat cut to the right size.

Maybe this can give you a general idea, although this would definitely
have a conspicuous DIY look. (I just try to make these things in
batch, to conserve on labor.)

I should note the latter photo, which might be of the most interest to
you, is now out of date. The wood beams making up the base were
rearranged into a V shape for more width, with a metal brace
spanning the mouth of the V for stiffness. Likewise the 24inch
vertical mast was replaced with a completely straight section of EMT,
instead of that weird zig-zag piece I originally happened to have
lying around.

2013-07-30 Thread Ben West
Yep, sorry for not being diligent about mentioning (or photographing) the
roof mat. None of the rooftops I've mounted on are metal, but even still a
roof mat is a good idea to keep the wood from slowly rotting away the
tar-paper or whatever the roof is surfaced with.

Thanks for the tip about using a stall mat!

Pretty sure the roof is rubber, but I haven't been on it yet. Roof mats are
definitely a good idea.
Years ago when I worked at a WISP, I think we used rubber truck mud flaps.
Cheap and can be purchased locally.

I wonder if you could bolt a 5' stanchion to a mat, which the mat's weight
would hold such a small radio with no issue. Like a four bolt foot plate on

Harbor Freight foam puzzle mats work alright as well for pads. $6.99 for 4
on sale almost every week. I'm with Josh though. A pallet with some mats
under it works wonders. If you find a source for the plastic pallets they
work even better.

non-penetrating roof mount, as the only place with clear
 line-of-sight is
on the roof of both gas stations. Flat roof without much of a lip to
 mount
an antenna to. All of my Google searches come up with much larger
non-penetrating roof mounts, 3' or wider, which are designed for much
larger and taller masts. Also very pricey, $150 or more each.

Does anyone make a small non-penetrating roof mount, say 2ft square
 out
of metal with an attachment to hold a 5ft mast or including a 5ft
 mast?
Maybe a single cinder/cement block to weigh it down would be all
 that is
needed. Won't ever need to go higher.

Or do you have another suggestion for mounting?

   Thanks in advance,

   Josh

We use wood pallets with cement blocks when needed. Wood pallets are free
for the asking most of the time from area businesses.

Skywalker's $55 one doesn't have a mast but you can grab a piece of conduit
from Home Depot for ten bucks and cut in half and use one for each side.

Re: [WISPA] Need small non-penetrating roof mount for single Nanostation + 5ft mast

2013-07-30 Thread Scott Carullo

Piece of aluminum 5/16 thick maybe 12x12 inches or whatever suites you - I
usually get them 8x12 so they fit on top of a wall nicely when needed.
Drill 1/2 hole about an inch in from each corner. Weld an aluminum pipe
to the middle about 2ft tall maybe 1 to 1-1/4 diameter. Drill small hole
near base so water can get out. Take that and a tube of good silicone
caulk and you can put a two foot pole that won't rust anywhere you want it
(shingle, metal roof, soffit, wood panel, fiberglass, cement, stucco etc
etc...) It wont come off, you don't have to drill any holes and you can
explain that the roof under it is more waterproof and stronger than it was
before you put it there. I should sell em and call then plop-a-pole's
