[WISPA] TrangoLink Giga

2008-03-06 Thread Marty Dougherty
Has anyone deployed these @ 18Ghz that is willing to give feedback? We
are wondering if they are beyond the initial bugs and are stable enough
for some important links.

Any feedback would be great! Thanks.

Re: [WISPA] TrangoLink Giga

2008-03-06 Thread Brad Belton
I believe we have one of the first units in the field. I was told it was
#7. Had a couple initial bumps with the gear during the installation, but
nothing Trango wasn't able to resolve overnight for us.

So far we've only had one issue with the gear not passing data. No idea
what caused it, but a soft reboot resolved the problem. Since then Trango
has upgraded the firmware of this link for us and we haven't had any
problems. Not sure if you noticed the radar activity in the DFW area right
now, but it's been pretty red everywhere for a good part of the day and the
GigaLINK has been singing along without so much as a blip. The gear has
been up since mid-late last year.

Best,

Brad

RE: [WISPA] TrangoLINK Giga vs Dragonwave

2007-07-01 Thread Charles Wu
Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time to respond...as usually, listserv emails just
get typed out quickly late at night, and often are full of all sorts of
mistakes...This time around, I at least took the time to review what I
type once =)

That said, it would be great if you'd be willing to provide some
technical information about the TrangoLINK Giga, as all we have right
now is a lot of guesses

6. TrangoLINK-Giga uses 256 QAM modulation to get 311+ Mbps FD (not
240 Mbps as Charles claims) using an 80 MHz channel.

Using a 55 MHz channel...Horizon can achieve ~400 Mbps of FD
capacity...what's interesting here is that although it is technically
legal to license an 80 MHz channel under FCC 18 GHz rules, both
Dragonwave Ceragon label their 56 MHz products under ETSI; if memory
serves me correctly, there were issues and reasons why most
manufacturers with experience in Part 101 don't recommend licensing 80
MHz channels, but I can't for the life of me recall, so I'm not going to
push it (now 23 GHz is another matter)

But back to apples to apples...

TrangoLINK-Giga 256QAM in 56 MHz Channel = ~300 (as high as 311+) Mbps
FD Throughput
Dragonwave Horizon 256 QAM in a 56 MHz Channel = ~400 (as high as 450+)
Mbps FD Throughput

Now, the next question would to ask regarding throughput would be
payload and architecture related

Horizon is a native Ethernet radio and has a built-in GigE port...line
rate, depending on ethernet frame size (e.g., 64 byte), I have seen
throughput tests as high as ~450 Mbps FD on the 56 MHz channel variant
(avg throughput comes out to about 400 Mbps FD)

I have a few questions about the TrangoLINK-Giga

1. Is it a native Ethernet radio? Or is it Ethernet over SONET...most
OEM manufacturers have SONET-based platforms (e.g., OC-3 / OC-6 /
etc); I've seen such systems suffer due to the overhead of Ethernet to
SONET packet translation issues?

2. Do you have any packet per second / packet size / throughput tests of
the TrangoLINK-Giga in just a lab environment?

3. How do you support TDM ports using adaptive modulation?

Using 128QAM TrangoLINK-Giga achieves 273 Mbps with a receive
sensitivity of -64.
(comparable to Charles' claim about Horizon) Now, to REALLY compare
apples to apples, take Horizon's (per Dragonwave's datasheet) 40 Mhz
channel 256 QAM
(297 Mbps with RX sens of -60.5) and compare it to Trango 40 MHz
channel 256 QAM (240 Mbps with RX sens of -63.2). It is not as
different as he implies.

GigaLINK 128QAM: Rx Sens = -64 dBm
GigaLINK 256QAM: Rx Sens = -63.2 dBm

Something doesn't seem right about this number, a sampling of 6 other
radio manufacturers making similar products average 5-8 dB in Receive
Sensitivity loss when moving from 128QAM to 256QAM...Are you stating
that Trango only loses 0.8 dB of Rx sensitivty when moving from 128 to
256QAM?

Because until two months ago, there wasn't a licensed radio for $10K-$12K.
Its price competition from companies like Trango, that forces other
manufacturers to drop their prices also.
Its the message that Licensed is not jsut for carriers anymore, as soon as
manufacturers that historically targeted WISPs, start making a product for
WISPs.
The technology has been available for years, why not the lower costs until
now?

With that said, I recognize that Dragonwave also is a key competitor driving

Re: [WISPA] TrangoLINK Giga

2007-06-26 Thread Tom DeReggi
At this time, I'm not saying whether I'm choosing Dragonwave or Trango, or
both.

But I will say there are other factors to consider in favor of choosing
Trango.

Dealing with a Manufacturer that one has a history with, or vice versa.
Once a WISP builds credabilty up with a manufacturer, its hard to walk away
from thatrelationship.

Loyalty to manufacturer and vice versa has its advantages.
If I ask Trango to send me a GigaLink tommorrow (provided it was a released
product available to ship), it would be here in 48 hours on my door step.
If I asked Dragonwave to send me a Horizon tommorrow, they'd send me a
credit app, and the address to wire funds to.
What happens if one of these things fail in teh field in a given month, and
cash flow was temporarilly depleated, would I get a replacement radio
overnighted or another Credit app sent over to fill out?

Thats just one of many example, a strong vendor relationship could offer..
I know the name of the majority of Trango's staff, and the majority of them
kow my name.

That type of relationship is priceless.
Its not just about the technical comparison.
Its stuff like the Trango advisory summits, where they allocated the
majority of core relevent staff to attend an event, and paid for relevent
WISPs to travel and come educate them on our needs.
These are not just sales siminars like Road Shows. They paid for our lobby
effort to them, NOT OUR EXPENSE! That is huge.

These things go along way.

I'm not saying that the same relationship can't be developed with a company
like Dragonwave (new to us), or for that matter CTI (a company we know well,
and knows us well).

I'm just saying, its starting from ground zero, with a new manufacturer.
Maybe a bridge that CTI already has constructed, to fill the gap.

That statement, really depends on the price that is relased, and the

volume the buyer is considering, as well as their time frame.

If someone is planning on dropping 1/4-1/2 million on Licensed gear in

a year, and the price is really good, allowing the provider to get 30%
more links

up for the same dollar, its not much of a risk being the first,

considering the future potential reward.

I would argue that there is ALWAYS MASSIVE risk of being first...and
spending 1/4 - 1/2 only MAGNIFIES that risk

There are people who spent $$$ millions on Cisco OFDM Wireless stuff
back in the mid-late 90s...that never worked

There are people who spent $$$ millions on Adaptive Broadband stuff back
in the late 90s...it didn't work for 5 years, and they finally only got
it working b/c there was so much bankrupt inventory at $0 cost that
writing software was almost a moot point

If the WISP's timeline is also spread out over the year, they have

plenty of time to wait for bug fixes, before the bulk of the
deployments.

I personally would rather spend $12k on a link that WORKS TODAY vs.
spending $10k on a link that MIGHT WORK SOMEDAY

That said, the TrangoLINK Giga is about the same price as Horizon, and
doesn't have anywhere near the throughput upgrade path that Horizon has
(see my earlier email about channel size)

So, the better question to ask, would be, given a choice between 2
providers (who are both incidentally about the same size), would I
rather

1. Spend $10k on a backhaul THAT WILL DEFINITELY WORK with a small
company that has 5 years of building licensed backhauls and is 100%
committed to building licensed backhauls today and tomorrow

Or

2. Spend $10 on a backhaul THAT MIGHT WORK IN 6-12 MONTHS with a small
company that has just released its first backhaul line but also still
needs to support a point-to-multipoint line, a wireless video
surveillance line, a mesh line, etc

much appreciated by the client. I also recall
providing backhaul training to my WISP. I also
provided a nice conference room, lunch, etc. The WISP
was VERY appreciated. So you make some very good
points about building busines relationships.

However, the other challenge however is that some of
my customers asked me to be careful in providing
luxurious lunches/training etc because of their
company policy to not accept gifts or anything free.

So it really depends on the circumstance. But good

Re: [WISPA] TrangoLINK Giga vs Dragonwave

2007-06-26 Thread Tom DeReggi

Charles,

This post of yours, is getting into the meat and potatos of what we need to
know to make a fair comparison.

see responses in line

.the FCC doesn't allow someone to license a 56 MHz channel,
so to run at this date rate, you would have to license 2 adjacent
channels (2x the license cost, and at ~ $3500 / link, it's nothing to
sneeze at)

To be accurate, I'm not convinved licensing two channels cost double $3500.
Maybe that is what You charge, but not the FCC.

3. Under Part 101, it is technically illegal to just squat on the
frequency by grabbing that extra channel...you have to use it or you
lose it

Other than cost, what prevents a WISP from licensing both channels? What
method of proof is required, to show need and use to the FCC, to meet legal
requirement?

5. From a comparison perspective, Horizon has a max capacity of 350 Mbps
FD on a single FCC channel (so it's 350 vs 240)

At what penalty, to acheive 350?
For hypothetical example, 350 reducing range compared to 240 with Giga link?

6. From a raw performance perspective, TrangoLINK Giga requires 256 QAM
modulation to get 240 Mb FD...Horizon does 270 Mb FD with 128 QAM; the
difference in receive sensitivity between 128 QAM to 256 QAM can be
anywhere from 5-10 dB

How is this possible, that Horizon can acheive BOTH lower modulation and
smaller channel size, while maintaining higher throughput?

Its hard to believe. How are they beating physics?

7. High Power -- not sure about the specs of the TrangoLINK Giga, but
having a High Power variant gives Horizon an extra 7 dB worth of output
power...depending on the frequency, that can be almost 2' worth of
antenna

Definately a plus, for those longer range links, and landlords finicky on
antenna size limits.

As you state, Trango's output power needs defining, to know if an advantage.

10. Dragonwave is a company that is focused exclusively and is committed
to backhaul; it also has a product roadmaps for AirPair that allow for
future upgradability (AirPair has a roadmap that will get it to 1 GB+ in

the future)

Doesn't the Trango Gigalink also have a migration path to 600mbps?

With all said, the competitive analisys is not just against other Licensed
manufacturers.
The competition is Gigabit MW gear. Best of Class MW gear can reliably
achieve 2 mile in high rain regions at 4- 9s, with 2 ft parabolics.
The purpose of Licensed is to gain farther distances at capacities as close
to GB as possible, and lower cost.

So the challenge is how far can manufacturer's go in licensed, at Highest
speeds?

For apples to apples comparison, with 2 ft dishes on both ends, w/ 18Ghz,
how far can we go to deliver 4- 9's reliabilty or better, at peak speed
(240mbps or higher) with the various manufacturers? How many roof top
leases can I by pass, to enable me to build out my backbone network in a
region, using these manufacturers?

What can Horizon accomplish?

RE: [WISPA] TrangoLINK Giga vs Dragonwave

2007-06-24 Thread Charles Wu
Several things

1. Dragonwave PoE is not standard b/c it's virtually impossible b/c in
a GigE setup, there's no unused pairs

2. Horizon is approximately 25% cheaper than AirPair, with a comparable
entry point list price LOWER than the Orthogon / Motorola Gemini / 60 Mb
Backhaul (20 Mb FLEX vs Gemini's 20 Mb FD Throughput)

3. Horizon is software upgradable from as low as 10 Mb to 350 Mb on a
single FCC channel (400 Mb if you bond 2 channels together)

Not sure... but Dragonwave's PoE is not standard PoE... you have to
purchase their expensive, proprietary cables with the radios... so if
you are running a new cable, why not just run LMR400 and not ever have
to worry about it again?

RE: [WISPA] TrangoLINK Giga vs Dragonwave

2007-06-24 Thread Charles Wu
Its important to remember... There are two relevent prices to
consider
Entry Cost and Full Speed Cost.

Sure, let's compare apples to apples, to start:

OVERALL THROUGHPUT

1. The TrangoLINK Giga requires 56 MHz of spectrum to get 311 Mb of FD
throughput...the FCC doesn't allow someone to license a 56 MHz channel,
so to run at this date rate, you would have to license 2 adjacent
channels (2x the license cost, and at ~ $3500 / link, it's nothing to
sneeze at)

2. From an entry point perspective, if you only license 1 channel to
start (e.g., aren't using the data throughput), there's no way to
reserve that adjacent channel...you have to hope / pray that in the
time period that you scale that no one licenses your neighboring
channel

3. Under Part 101, it is technically illegal to just squat on the
frequency by grabbing that extra channel...you have to use it or you
lose it

4. That said, if we're only going to use a single channel, the Full
Speed upgrade point of the TrangoLINK Giga is 240 Mb FD, NOT 300 Mb

5. From a comparison perspective, Horizon has a max capacity of 350 Mbps
FD on a single FCC channel (so it's 350 vs 240)

RF PERFORMANCE

7. High Power -- not sure about the specs of the TrangoLINK Giga, but
having a High Power variant gives Horizon an extra 7 dB worth of output
power...depending on the frequency, that can be almost 2' worth of
antenna

RELIABILITY

8. Like it or not, the probability of issues in a first revision of any
hardware manufacturer's product is extremely high...Dragonwave has been
producing licensed point-to-point radios for over 5 years and is on the
3rd generation of its hardware platform...

9. Trango's past 2 first revisions of hardware almost inevitably
fails...look at their last several new products (I'm talking
reengineered...HD Mesh is just Atlas + Mikrotik + glue, 2.4 GHz was
based upon 900)...Atlas, 900 MHz...to me, it seems like it usually takes
them about 1 year to get something to work properly...maybe 3rd time is
the charm?

That said...it's one thing to be first when it's only $1-2k, but $10k+
makes it a bit more painful when you've got to wait 6+ months for them
to get it to work right

ROADMAP

10. Dragonwave is a company that is focused exclusively and is committed
to backhaul; it also has a product roadmaps for AirPair that allow for
future upgradability (AirPair has a roadmap that will get it to 1 GB+ in
the future)

11. Trango builds a product and a market, and then moves on

Some food for thought

more links
up for the same dollar, its not much of a risk being the first,
considering the future potential reward.

Honestly I was a little disappointed with the pricing... I thought it
would be more aggressive from the newest player on the block. For the
100Mbps full-duplex version, it was only about 25% less than a similar
Dragonwave setup. I guess I was hoping for more like 50% less. :)

If someone is planning on dropping 1/4-1/2 million on Licensed gear

30% more links up for the same dollar, its not much of a risk being
the first, considering the future potential reward. If the WISP's
timeline is also spread out over the year, they have plenty of time
to wait for bug fixes, before the bulk of the deployments. The
golden question right now is, what price is Trango going to be at?
The prospective buyers are predicting a low cost entry point, just
because Trango has Always delivered industry leading price point, to
jump start volume adoption in the industry. However, prior to seeing
the price released, I'll say Dragon wave has the upper hand, for
potentially being able to be the price leader based on their all
outdoor design, compared to Trango's half and half indoor/outdoor.

I will tell you, the most exciting news of the year for me, is
clearly Trango's entry into the Licensed space. I selected them once
for their Superior designs, and wouldn't hesitate to do it again, if
they follow their own suit with the initial mentality of innovated
products, such as the 5830 product line in it's day.

With that said... I spoke with Dragon Wave, at the IWPC workshop this
week. These guys get it, and is going to be a tough act to follow.
The Dragon wave vision is to have a single management platform and
infrastructure design for all your needs. Dragon wave is also very
highly considering launching an E-band or 60Ghz product to their
line, in the near future. Could you imagine that? Thats a product
line that could bring WISPs to carrier class. Licensed Backhaul, GB
near interference-free last mile.

Not sure... but Dragonwave's PoE is not standard PoE... you have to
purchase their expensive, proprietary cables with the radios... so if
you are running a new cable, why not just run LMR400 and not ever have

E-Band (70 - 80 GHz). 2.5 miles

Not Likely in George's neck of the woods. I think he's in one of the highest
Rain/Fog zones (Fade).

Possibly Bridgewave's AR80X, if he's got 30+ grand to spend.
He's better off with Licensed, which he'll be able to do under 15K.

I'm fairly certain I don't want to be the first to try anything.

But I will be needing to install a new backhaul that doesn't operate in
any of the 5 gig unlicensed frequencies, or six gig.

It needs to be duplex go 2.5 miles and through fog in a rainy

Any suggestions with pricing?

It's something I have to do within the next 3 months.

Re: [WISPA] Trangolink Giga

2007-06-01 Thread George Rogato
I would like something fast and duplex. Guess fast would be 45 megs. 100
would be good.
It's a back haul from a fiber feed and it's serving a half a dozen 5gig
and 2 gig ap's that are not rate limited.

E-Band (70 - 80 GHz). 2.5 miles

Not Likely in George's neck of the woods. I think he's in one of the
highest
Rain/Fog zones (Fade).

Possibly Bridgewave's AR80X, if he's got 30+ grand to spend.
He's better off with Licensed, which he'll be able to do under 15K.

I'm fairly certain I don't want to be the first to try anything.

But I will be needing to install a new backhaul that doesn't operate
in

any of the 5 gig unlicensed frequencies, or six gig.

It needs to be duplex go 2.5 miles and through fog in a rainy

Any suggestions with pricing?

It's something I have to do within the next 3 months.

2007-06-01 Thread George Rogato

Range is about 2.5 miles
It crosses a river and the river is fogged in many many mornings. We
also are considered a rain forest. Licensed is the preference unless
there is something not in the typical 5 gig 2 gig frequencies.

Not Likely in George's neck of the woods. I think he's in one of the
 highest
 Rain/Fog zones (Fade).
Possibly Bridgewave's AR80X, if he's got 30+ grand to spend.
He's better off with Licensed, which he'll be able to do under 15K.

George,

DragonWave 18 Ghz Horizon will most likely do the job for you -- here's
a web link for more info:
http://www.dragonwaveinc.com/products-horizon.asp

What's nice about it is that you can buy it at 50 Mb, and upgrade it
(via software) up to 400 Mb

The scary thing is the price of licensed radios have come down so far
that once you get above 50 Mb FD, it's almost cheaper to go licensed

I'll ping you offlist with info

Re: [WISPA] Trangolink Giga

2007-05-31 Thread Tom DeReggi

As for Trango Giga...

Looks like a very exciting product, and hopefully they'll have an exciting
price to go with it.
As for testing, I'm planning on it. There is no shortage of willing beta
testers. The hard part is paying for it :-)
I think Trango's product is really going to put the preasure on hard to
competitors like DragonWave.

I'd like to bring up the point that Dragon Waves' ALL OUTDOOR Horizon
product gives it a big advantage for WISPs with limited indoor colocation
options. Expecially in Urban areas where Management companies try and
charge for every closet (Rack) Space they can charge for. With only needing
indoor POE, it makes it much easier to just replace existing 5.8G gear with
little effort, and NO renegotiation with Property owners.

Of course there is also benefits of combo indoor/outdoor unit models.

As for Wimax 5.8Ghz Sector models I think that is a thing of the past at
this stage of the industry, atleast in Urban areas. Customers are expecting
higher expectations from their provider, that PtMP may not be able to
deliver long term. The future is about PtP last mile, and small channel
sizes to enable a larger number of links. What they need to do is get the
Atlas PtP down under $1000, with small channel size support. PTP is the
only way to survive the noise floor, in most of Urban America today. PtMP
was a transition technology, that WiMax was 5 years to late to the party.
Due to new PTP trends, Many buildings may be left unserved, but in favor or
being able to better serve the ones that have committed already to the
technology first. I have a lot of respect for the Atlas PTP line, and it
was well priced for Backhaul purposes, however 5.8Ghz backhaul is also
starting to become a thing of the past, as new breed Licensed technology
replaces it. With Mikrotik/StarOS and Certified varients such as Deliberant
or Tranzeo, there is no longer the need to pay top dollar for Last Mile PtP
nor the reason to justify PTP for just Backhaul anymore. PTP is becomming a
low cost last mile solution today. As for WImax/PtP, is there really
anything someone can offer more than what Alvarion already offers in their
Commnet program? I'd argue, not much. Why build a new product to compete
agaisnt these tried and true technologies? Again, I'm not saying a new PtMP
WimAx product won't be embraced, I'm jsut saying the market is changing, and
what we need today is rock bottom low cost High quality Last Mile PTPs, and
reasonable cost Solid as a rock super high performance Backhaul.

Trango Gets it, which is why they are jumping right to the future, and
concentrating on making a best of breed Licensed Backhaul Product.
Now whether the Atlas PtP price drops, that is uncertain. I'd like to see
it happen.

Just my 2 cents and predictions.
