And the list goes, like rescue cats, save kids, put up birthday banners, etc.
Putting up Christmas lights would most likely get the most requests up here.

Advantages of a fire truck over a standard bucket truck (other than

Mike,
It was a pleasure talking with you at MUM.

We have a 105 foot Ladder truck that used to be in service at Springfield IL
FD. It has a lifting capacity of 750 LBS. We do not use it for site
survey's, we have two bucket vans for that. It is a portable tower, and we
utilized it as a tower, last year when we had two towers damaged by
tornados.

We had it refurbished by a truck center near her, and it is up to NFPA
standards on the ladder operation.

There is not a generator yet, as we are looking for a diesel generator. (all
of our generators are gas)
It has around 35K miles, and it is a 78 model.

I will post a pic when I get in the office later today.

I have used it's lifting capacity to stack a 120' Rohn 25G tower in two
sections. It was really helpful in stacking that tower in an afternoon
without a crane expense.

Normally you stack by sections using a gin pole. It is very dangerous to
stack a Rohn25 in multi sections.

Really? You actually paid for the testing to make sure that is
compliant? Many Fire Departments in the US can't even afford
this.

In order to comply with NFPA 1914, one must recertify
yearly, or after a significant event. Fairly extensive procedure

done properly.

Wow. Of course, you had your testing done AFTER using it as a
lifting platform, otherwise your certification was invalid.

Yes we paid for the rebuild and they certified it like all of their
rebuilds. We spent around $19K for the refurb. We will not use it for any
firefighting duties, but it is nice to know that the structure is sound.
They work on all aerial platforms in the St. Louis Metro area, and are
factory reps for most of the apparatus manufacturers.
We will not re-certify it, as we do not need NFPA standards for a portable
tower, so it would be better to say it meets standards, and not it is
certified.

It does not have a pump, but it has plumbing to the top of the ladder.
(2-1/2 or 3) The turret does not work anymore, but we only use it for
vertical real estate.

Scriv;

We don't do signal checks with the truck. If our installers can't make
link from the ground or using few mast sections to check the signal we
don't install. I tell them not to climb. Sometimes they do climb but I
discourage it. I'd rather just put in another pop.

The truck we have has 900 lbs lift capacity in the bucket. It is an 80'

We use it to install and maintain our pops. Remember we are a 900 MHz
canopy shop. We deploy our pops at about 80 feet in dense canopy.

I had my bucket truck tested. Was only around $500. It was cool, passed
electrical up to 96kv!

Now if I can just get the upper controls fixed so I can actually use it!

We had it refurbished by a truck center near her, and it is up to NFPA
standards on the ladder operation.

Really? You actually paid for the testing to make sure that is
compliant? Many Fire Departments in the US can't even afford
this.

In order to comply with NFPA 1914, one must recertify yearly, or after a
significant event. Fairly extensive procedure

done properly.

I have used it's lifting capacity to stack a 120' Rohn 25G tower in two
sections. It was really helpful in stacking that tower in an afternoon
without a crane expense.

Wow. Of course, you had your testing done AFTER using it as a
lifting platform, otherwise your certification was invalid.

Tom;

A snorkel is a bucket truck that is used to get above the fire and spray
water down on the fire.

It is a diesel and the boss says six miles to the gallon.

You will need a commercial driver's license with air brakes
certification. It is a specialty truck to be sure, you aren't going to
use one of these for installs. The thing weighs 46,000 lbs and you can
tell where it has been. A smaller snorkel might be good for installs,
say a 40' rig? This is an 80' rig.

WE have 2 trucks for installs and signal checks. The 1st we bought 2 years
ago and it is a large step van with a boom bucket on top. Kind of looks like
a bread truck with half the front windshield cut away for the bucket. It has
a reach of 44 feet from the ground.

The 2nd truck we bought about 6 weeks ago. It is a large flat bed truck with
an 80 ft boom crane/bucket on it. This is the ones you see sign companies
use to hang signs. 80 feet is a long way up. It weighs in at approx 24 k lbs
and does not need a special class drivers license.

Look around and you can find some pretty good deals out there.

Blair - you need to re-check on these state laws.. Anything over 26,000
Gross weight capable vehicle requires a CDL !

This is nationwide - atleast this is what the state troopers who have

For Hire or Not - weight limits are weight limits.

In most states, as long as the vehicle is only operated by the vehicle
owner, and it is not used as a common carrier, (to transport people or
cargo for hire), and it is not used to carry HazMat, and it is not driven
across state lines, a CDL is NOT required.

In Michigan, my chauffeurs class 3 with motorcycle endorsement allows me
to operate any road legal vehicle within Michigan as long as it doesn't
have HazMat that requires placards aboard it. I've had the chauffers
since I was 18, but, an operators license is all that is needed unless I
am acting as a common carrier.

RE: [WISPA] Want a bucket truck?

2007-06-05 Thread Mike Delp
JohhnyO,

You are correct. A lot of states used to have chauffers licenses, but now
the CDL (starting in mid 80's) specified weight limits. The only exemption
is government vehicles (like fire trucks). It was the way to grandfather
all the volunteer firemen.

snip

Who needs a commercial driver's license (CDL)?
You need to earn your CDL if you intend to:

* Operate any vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more.

* Tow a trailer or other vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating
(GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more with a gross combination weight rating
(GCWR) of all vehicles of 26,001 pounds or more.

* Operate any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more people (including
the driver).

* Operate any vehicle carrying hazardous materials in amounts requiring
placards.

Are there CDL exemptions?

Yes. You won't need a Michigan CDL if:

* You're on active duty in the military―or in the National Guard―and are
operating military vehicles with military licenses.

* You're a police officer or firefighter and are operating emergency
vehicles.

* You're a farm worker operating a farm vehicle within a 150-mile radius
of your farm. (You will need an F endorsement on your regular operator
license if you're driving a combination vehicle whose towing vehicle weighs
more than 26,000 pounds.)

* You are driving your own motor home.

It is an 80'
snorkel truck and cost $9,999.00 @ sixty thousand miles.

We use it to install and maintain our pops. Remember we are a 900 MHz
canopy shop. We deploy our pops at about 80 feet in dense canopy.

...and you can put out fires as long as the water tank is filled and you
know how to operate the pump panel (and you are preserving a piece of
 Americana)

And the list goes, like rescue cats, save kids, put up birthday banners, etc.
Putting up Christmas lights would most likely get the most requests up here.

I remember Mike Delp talking about having a fire truck.

Advantages of a fire truck over a standard bucket truck (other than
  coolness)?
