Hello,

I am still trying to figure out why the automatic session resizing (when
moving between clients with different screens, for example a desktop and a
laptop) doesn't work anymore since I started using MATE.

Since the latest x2goclient upgrade, I noticed the following behavior:
when I resume a session on a client with a different screen size, the
screen will resize, but the session immediately suspends. Then when I login
to the same session again (on the same client, so no screen resolution
change), the session stays up.

When the session suspends, the log simply looks like this:

*Session: Session resumed at 'Tue May 6 22:29:08 2014'.*
*Info: Screen [0] resized to geometry [1280x1024] fullscreen [1].*
*Session: Suspending session at 'Tue May 6 22:29:10 2014'.*

And if I open the same session again (on the same screen), it just stays
up although it reports the same resizing procedure being run:

*Session: Session resumed at 'Tue May 6 22:31:38 2014'.*
*Info: Screen [0] resized to geometry [1280x1024] fullscreen [1].*

Not sure if this is related, but if I press CTRL+ALT+R which is the
command to switch between auto-resize and viewport mode, the session also
immediately suspends, and the logs show this:

*Info: Disabled desktop resize mode in agent.*
*Session: Suspending session at 'Tue May 6 22:35:46 2014'.*
*Info: Waiting the cleanup timeout to complete.*
*Session: Session suspended at 'Tue May 6 22:35:46 2014'.*

Is there any additional debug information that I could see anywhere, to
see what code is actually being executed when the session goes into resume?

Jean

Hello,

Is someone able to help with the below? If you could just point me in the
right direction or suggest some ideas, I may be able to investigate
further...

Jean

Do you have the x2gomatebindings package installed on the X2Go Server?
You have to make sure that no .config/monitors.xml file is present in
the home directory.

Above that, I have the impression that MATE 1.8 has problems with
desktop resizing. But I have to check that with MATE upstream.

Greets,

Very very good. Needs some fine tuning here and there, but it is a
very very good starting point.

I don't know how the wiki works and how to get write access to it,
otherwise I would include it right away.

http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/wiki:start#x2go_wiki_signing_up

I logged into the IRC chatroom, but I don't know if I did it correctly (my
first time on IRC ever), because I saw nobody else online.
It might be easier to discuss this over IRC, but I would have to see about
timing (my time zone is PST)

It would be good to have you on IRC. As already written,

 (1) make sure you are connected to irc.freenode.net
 (2) enter: /join #x2go
 (3) write: sunweaver: let me know when you are ready to discuss the
newbie docs

 (or a-like)

If you use someone's nick name (mine is sunweaver), then the line you
write on IRC gets highlighted for me and I reply asap.

For people working and living in different time zones then others in
the team, it is very helpful to stay on IRC 24/7. This can be easily
achieved if you have a machine that is online 24/7 and that is
reachable via SSH.

If that is the case for you, you may want to look at a screen+irssi setup [1].

In the linked document, you see that I mention 2 Videos, one about a
typical X2go session and one about how Thinclient looks like, I still have
to do these video.

Ack. Looking forward to those, too.

Mike

PS: it would also be helpful if you could change your mailing list
subscription to non-digest. If you want me to do that with my
listadmin hat on, please ping me.

http://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-win32/x2goclient/heuler/mingw32-4.4/qt-4.8/x2goclient-4.0.2.0-2014.03.19-new-dependencies-setup.exe

I am asking for testers.

If you do encounter a bug, please see if you can reproduce the bug on
this build without the new dependencies:
http://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-win32/x2goclient/heuler/mingw32-4.4/qt-4.8/x2goclient-4.0.2.0-2014.03.19-old-dependencies-setup.exe
(Note: Both builds do have PulseAudio 5.0. That's the only updated
dependency in the latter compared to 4.0.1.3+build2 .)

Also, you may notice that the file size is smaller for the build with
new dependencies. That is because I removed unnecessary files from
VcXsrv. Details here:

Re: [X2Go-User] Buggy File Folder sharing

2014-03-14 Thread Mike Gabriel

Package: x2goclient
Tag: build-macosx
Severity: important
Version: 3.99.2.1

Hi Graham, hi Thierry,

[I forward this bug repport to our bug tracker

On Do 13 Mär 2014 15:01:42 CET, Graham Stoddart-Stones wrote:

Thierry:

Just to confirm that we are encountering the same problem with Mac
OSX 3.5.1, X2Goclient 3.99.2.1:

When you start up X2Goclient on the Mac, you get an error dialog:

sshd client not started, you'll need sshd for printing and file
sharing.

In OSX, openssh-server is built-in, and is activated by setting
Enable Remote Login in System Preferences Sharing, as many others
have noted. However, this does not stop the error dialog from
recurring every time. That leads to another error message File
cannot be opened. If one ignores this, X2Goclient starts and runs
normally, provided one wishes to neither print locally, nor share
files from the Mac with the remote server.

I have seen lots of other emails on this topic, suggesting that the
error message does not necessarily apply to the Mac (ie sshd is in
fact running, the error message simply means that the x2goclient
code is looking for a response from a Linux-like file (which does
not occur in the same place in OSX), similarly the File Cannot be
opened again refers to a file that is either not used on a Mac, or
is in a wholly different location from where that file is actually
stored on a Mac. I have not seen this point formally answered
anywhere.

For me, the concern is that, whether sshd is running on the Mac or
not, File Sharing does not appear to be working. I am not
sufficiently familiar with X2Go nor with the Mac to know where to
look on the server for the Mac shared folders, but I do know that
there is nothing under media, as there is with Linux and a PC,
which is where I normally look. Again, I have searched the bulletins
and forums, and often seen this point raised - I have just not found
the answer on how to get round it.

So, am keen to see how you get on, and whether anybody else can
please shed any light!

Can you cross-check the observed problem with latest X2Go Client [1]???

Can you launch X2Go Client from a terminal on Mac OS X and use a tool
like strace (if that exists) and check its output for pointers to
file-not-found errors?

That would be really helpful for tracking down this issue.

Don't call x2gostartagent directly. Use X2Go Client (or PyHoca-GUI /

About debugging... The issue you observe occurs somewhere in the NX

all,

A cursory reading of the online lit I found relating to x2gothinclient
seems to require that the stations all pxeboot...

I don't want thinclients that pxeboot.. what I need is a minimal OS that is
setup to autologin to X and then pyhoca-cli to the x2go-server... can the
x2gothinclient packages do this say on a minimal debian install for the
thinclient.. ?

Since I did not see this capability, I already built from scratch a minimal
Debian 6 that does an autologin into X using gdm/matchbox wm, and then
created a script that force loops a username/pw graphical dialog using yad
(zenity fork)... suffice it to say this works well... but I'm thinking if
x2gothinclient already had the capability to do this then I did it all for
nought.. except it was definitely a good exercise...

Mike has replied
https://www.mail-archive.com/x2go-user@lists.berlios.de/msg00469.html

I would sure like to know if this has got a follow up, but can't
find anything more about it on the list.
Since i would like to create a minimal iso also with only a the
login manager to access the x2go server, if would like to know if
someone has succeeded in doing so.

The x2gothinclient package acts as a display manager nowadays. Install
it and it will ask you to replace gdm/kdm and alike.

With PyHoca-CLI there is another approach. We have extended Unity
Greeter's remote login feature so that now Unity Greeter can log users
into X2Go Sessions.

This would mean that the pxe server can only be operated on LAN?

The PXE server serves a complete linux chroot via NFS. For this you
need quite some speed on the network, otherwise the thin client

Also PXE is served via DHCP. DHCP is only something you have on local

It is possible to work around both issues with a tool called iPXE, but

The PostgeSQL backend is not for migrating sessions between nodes.
This rather sounds like a VM use case (KVM via Ganeti or with similar

However, you may want to try load balancing. For this, you

After x2goserver upgrade, I have files /etc/nxagent/keystrokes.cfg and

Not sure what to do next. Is it perhaps a known issue that CTRL+ALT+T does
not work in MATE, or perhaps a known issue in the current version of
x2goserver?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thank you!

Jean

the described scenario is exactly the reason why one of the devs (arw
from Uni Erlangen, Germany) provided the keystrokes.cfg patch.

Put another hotkey combination into the keystrokes.cfg file for
session termination (/etc/x2go/keystrokes.cfg) and then CTRL-ALT-T
should work again in MATE.

You need to set the --read-exports-from dir cmdline options when
launching X2Go Client as also down in the X2Go Client start script of
the TCE [1].

The dir is hard-coded in x2gousbmounts / x2gocdmanager and IIRC
points to ~/export.

Sorry, my mistake.

For my Problem:
setxkbmap solves the problem with alt gr for the actual session.
but after ne login the settings are gone.

The problem occure only on one server, on a other I've no problem.

How could I solve the problem permanent? Maybe with a entry in
the .profile but I think this should only a workaround,...

Either put the setxkbmap in /etc/profile (applies to all users on this
machine) or in ~/.profile or ~/.bashrc (applies to the user on all
machines accessed with that homedir).

We solved this inconvenience for now by selecting the keyboard-layout
in KDE settings.

With our test environment I might also look into the various
keyboard-settings from thinclient, server and user. But that will be
pretty low priority...

in X2Go Client 4.0.1.3 use auto for the keyboard model.

in X2Go Client = 4.0.1.3 (still unreleased) there will be a radio
button for automatic keyboard detection.

[X2Go-User] Problems with x2goserver 4.0.1.10 / 4.0.0.8

2014-01-06 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi all,

two customers of mine stumbled over problems with the recent X2Go
Server upgrades. Issues occurred for sessions that had dots in the
session name (because of user names containing dots or because of
command names containing dots).

These issues will be fixed tomorrow, I am about to release X2Go Server
4.0.1.11 / 4.0.0.9 (Baikal LTS) tonight.

AFAIK, the issue has been fixed by Orion, not sure if it is already
uploaded to package archives. So, basically, no need to report it
against the Fedora bugzilla. Also, I have adopted the patch from
Fedora in the upstream version of X2Go Server. X2Go Server = 4.0.1.10
should not show this issue anymore.

Daniel Vrátil 2013-04-29 15:06:20 UTC
Hi,

unfortunately, I don't think there is a easy way to solve this.

In general, this is not a bug. Using two applications that handle display
resolution is not supported, as it can lead to many unexpectable
situations and

race conditions.

In your case I would suggest you disable KScreen KDED module (System
Settings -

Startup and Shutdown - Service Manager, uncheck KScreen 2), since x2go
handles resolution switches for you and only use the KScreen KCM to manually
change output settings (rotation, enabling/disabling outputs etc).

@Daniel: thanks for providing this piece of information!!!

I updated the FAQ item in the wiki...

I did notice this in the x2go log, maybe related?

nxagentXkbGetRules: WARNING! Failed to stat file

Yes, I noticed that too. I think that is fixed by touching the file
usr/share/X11/xkb/keymap.dir. Anyway, touching the keymap.dir file
seems to be needed for the keyboard mapping to work at all.

Actually there are three cases of different settings in the client.
Currently I only have the case of setting the keyboard type and
layout explicitly, working. I will be reporting the non-working
cases, but need some time for more testing to be sure of whats not
working.

By putting some debugging into /usr/bin/startkde I can see that the

established its changed to a us keyboard layout.

[X2Go-User] Nightly builds for Fedora and EPEL

2013-12-17 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi all,

thanks to one of our project sponsorers, IMMOBILIEN SCOUT 24, we will
be able to provide nightly built RPM packages and RPM release packages
directly from upstream in the (near) future.

Our RPM packages currently build against various Fedora (18-21 atm)
versions [1] and against EPEL (5+6) [2].

The nightly built RPMs still need some work here and there (QA work is
still in process), but we are happy to share the test load.

For those of you who start playing with our RPM builds: please use our
X2Go bug tracking system to report RPM bugs [3]. Please tag your bug
report with ''Tag: rpm-packages'', if you think the bug exists in the
RPM package itself and not so much in the X2Go code.

Don't report to your distro as the distro maintainers cannot help you
when playing with package provided by X2Go upstream. We will do our
best to support the Fedora packaging team of X2Go to merge our (as we
think) improvements into the .spec (i.e. RPM packaging) files.

Greets,
Mike

Can you submit the above text as a bug against x2gobroker? Of course,
no agent queries should take place if directrdp is enabled in the
session profile. This is a bug!!! Please report it under _your_
identity to our BTS (for the sake of good book keeping).

I can login to any user on the server with x2go but the trading program is

into that same session running on the server once I am logged in? I guess
what I am really asking is whether X2go can run just to enable viewing of
that software session?

This is only possible if the running session is a desktop session.
Then you can try to use the X2Go Client session type: Connection to
local desktop.

this working with a simple xhost + and setenv DISPLAY
host:display.

Running xhost + on a multi-user host is not a good idea, at all. If
that is your setup of convenience, change it, as it 100% lacks
security. People can access each others' clipboards and read+write
content to/from it. Easily, one can sniff passwords etc. that get
copied to the clipboard, etc.

Interestingly, it looks like freenx/opennx work fine in this mode,
but we would prefer not to use that solution as it appears to be a
dead end.  There must be something different about how freenx/opennx
set up security vs X2Go, but I can't find much documentation on
configuring security in X2Go.

You probably have to play with the xauth command for making your
desired setup work. (Though xhost + makes xauth unnecessary, so maybe
not).

I'll spend some more time in the man pages, but any other
suggestions here would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [X2Go-User] No sound in X2Go TCE (ATTN: @Mike)

Hi list,

http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/wiki:advanced:tce:install

Everything works fine, except for the sound.
All my thin clients don't emit sound.

Browsing through the list archive, I found a post from back in
October where Mike said it happens due to a permission problem, and
he posted two links to GIT where he had patched this (the first
patch introduced a typo, which was fixed in the second patch).

So I decided to give it a go and simply copy the
x2gothinclient_create script from GIT over the one I already had on
disk.

Sadly, this just made things worse: after removing the chroot
directory and rebuilding it with the new version of
x2gothinclient_create, neither keyboard nor mouse work, so I can't
even log in. Reverting back to the old script, rm'ing the chroot
directory and running x2gothinclient_create again fixed that issue -
but I still have no sound.

Any hints? Which log or config file(s) should I post?

I have just released x2gothinclient last Friday (1.1.0.1). It contains
several fixes and features add-ons. However, it depends on X2Go Client
4.0.1.2 which is still to be released.

Just copying x2gothinclient_create is a bad idea, as I introduced a
new package x2gothinclient-chroot that takes care of several chroot
issues and is intended to make the X2Go TCE upgradable in the future.

The package is only available in the lucid ppa of X2Go. In later
versions (starting with natty) GNOMEv2 was removed and replaced by
GNOMEv3 and x2gognomebindings is for GNOMEv2 only.

On git.x2go.org [1] we provide a package called x2gomatebindings.git
which is the continuation of x2gognomebindings, only adapted to MATE.

The package is currently only built for our Debian archive, as it
requires some MATE packages as build-deps (which was not trivial with
Launchpad the last time I tried). Build it from source if needed.

Once MATE has entered Debian (and with it: Ubuntu), I will provide
x2gomatebindings via our PPA on Launchpad as binary package.

Re: [X2Go-User] PostgreSQL backend and broker issues

On the broker I have:
x2goagent: 3.5.0.21
x2goserver: 4.0.1.6
x2goserver-extensions: 4.0.1.6
plus the broker package

Some weird things I can't resolve or figure out from the documentation.
1. On ServerB I can run 'x2golistsessions --all-servers' as a logged
regular user however it fails on ServerA. Can't figure out why.

The servers need to have identical home directories. The X2Go
PostgreSQL database backend uses db passwords stored in ~/.x2go/sqlpass.

If you have separate homes folders for the servers, then you have to
make sure ~/.x2go/sqlpass is available for each user in all $HOMEs.

2. On ServerA I could run '/usr/lib/x2go/x2gobroker-agent ubuntu
listsession' until I ran '/usr/sbin/x2godbadmin --adduser ubuntu' on
ServerB, than ServerA broke.

This makes sense. It really sounds like you do not have NFS'ed homes.

So I think I know what is happening but can you confirm:
1. NFS is required for the sharing of /home/* because of configs that are
stored under /home/user/.x2go/ for example the sqlpass file.
2. I need to run /usr/sbin/x2godbadmin --adduser username for every
users that will login with an x2goclient? Is there a way to automatically
run this?

Some people do that via CRON job. Some people do that via tweaking
sshd_config and they capture every SSH command starting with x2go* and
run x2godbadmin then.

3. It looks like the broker is attempting to deploy SSH keys??
--snip--
2013-11-09 16:10:39,837 - broker - DEBUG - Executing agent command on

ubuntu@192.168.1.3' '%h/.x2go/authorized_keys'
--snip--

Where is this used? The x2goclient (QT version) is connecting to the broker
over HTTPS and the x2goservers over SSH.

The broker agent indeed deploys SSH keys. X2Go Client can receive such
key when in broker mode and then straight forwardly log into the X2Go
server. This then means, that the HTTPS connection must be
trustworthy, because it is authoritive.

BTW this is an awesome set of products, I would be willing to update some
of the documentation on the web site if you can give me an account to the
wiki.

Please file a wishlist issue for that on X2Go BTS [1]. Doc updates are
always welcome.

Re: [X2Go-User] testing session broker in WSGI/plain/inifile configuration

More than likely, I'm doing something wrong with the git command,
but whenever I try to clone through our (mandatory) http proxy, the
clone command just sits there for about 5 minutes, and then errors
out.

I just tried to clone the x2gobroker.git project (at home) as follows:
git clone http://git.x2go.org/projects x2gobroker.git
or subsequently:
git clone http://git.x2go.org x2gobroker.git

This is probably, because you URL is wrong. Try this one instead:

git clone http://code.x2go.org/git/x2gobroker.git

Once I do manage to get a clone of the source, should I be
uninstalling the existing x2gobroker-* packages installed on my
session broker server? How would I then go about installing the
binaries after configure/make/make install from source? Can I leave
at least something that I've done or do I blow it all away and start
over with nightly build codes?

The broker .deb package is well maintained in upstream code. In
theory, it should work to run make sudo make install. If you
install the broker that way, the broker codes gets installed to

As you are on an RPM based system, I cannot be of great help with more

The problem is your authentication service's socket file...

x2gobroker and x2gobroker-authservice do talk to each other.
x2gobroker sends username + password to the authservice via a socket
and receives True or False back from the auth service.

The socket file on Debian wheezy normall is in
/var/run/x2gobroker/x2gobroker-authservice.socket, on wheezy it is in
/run/x2gobroker/x2gobroker-authservice.

The path of the authservice must be configured in
/etc/defaults/python-x2gobroker. The configuration you make there does
apply to all parts of the x2gobroker code.

Hang on, it is not a bug, you have an error in your wsgi configuration:

v

SetEnv X2GOBROKER_AUTHSOCKET /run/x2gobroker/x2gobroker-authservice.socket

^
Fix the above line in your apache config
(/var/run/x2gobroker/x2gobroker-authservice.socket), then you should
be a step further...

Or copy everything in /var/run to /run (and place a symlink from
/var/run to /run). That will happen with your upgrade to wheezy
anyway...

Enable X2GOBROKER_DEBUG in the wsgi config. The X2Go Client does those
queries with POST requests. If you enter that URL into your browser,
the browser does a GET request. GET requests are only enabled in
X2GOBROKER_DEBUG=1 mode.

Is it the case I am using the wrong backend, and don't know how to
set it to backend inifile? Thanks for the help(!)

1) Rebuilt server (using Squeeze) and incorporated nightly x2go builds

apt-get install -y x2goserver x2goserver-xsession
apt-get install -y x2gobroker-wsgi
apt-get install -y apache2 (apache fails until instill libapache2-mod-wsgi)
apt-get install -y libapache2-mod-wsgi
apt-get install -y x2gobroker-authservice

2) Checked versions
x2gobroker-wsgi: 0.0.3.0-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20131002~558~build1
x2goserver: 4.1.0.0-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20130731~779~build1
x2gobroker-authservice: 0.0.3.0-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20131002~558~build1

3) Set backend to inifile
In x2gobroker.conf:
[inifile]
enable = false
session-profiles = /etc/x2go/broker/x2gobroker-sessionprofiles.conf

If you want to use the inifile backend, you have to set enable = true
(not false).

x2gobroker.conf, and x2gobroker-wsgi.apache.conf - have not touched

Not sure this matters, but on client get:

Well then, how about enabling it in x2gobroker.conf (see above)?

I am not sure about the AssertionErrors. I will look at those. They
should not occur. Instead, you should just see the 404 Not Found

errors will go away, too.

How about installing X2Go Server on the machine you want to connect to?

If X2Go Server is installed, make sure the desktop shell you aim at
using is installed on that machine, as well.

Also, I have heard several people having problems with X2Go on RHEL6.
Fedora 19+20 are the best supported RPM based distros atm.

access Windows computers.
Something that is very practical in systems like Teamviewer is that the
person who supports you just have installed the software and to know
your ID and
password.
Besides these systems allow direct access to any computer on the local
network without having to open ports or configure routers or firewalls.

From already thank you very much.

with the present features of X2Go, providing a MS Windows support
infrastructure like you know from team viewer is not possible.

X2Go can provide a helpdesk-like support workflow for machines running
Linux desktops. For this, you have to install X2Go server and X2Go
Desktop Sharing on those machines, so the machines have to be under
your administrative control.

This has to be coded into X2Go Client. Currently, this is not possible.

Alternatively, you could try pyhoca-gui (but it still lacks broker
support :-( ), PyHoca-GUI allows for the user to provide a separate
SSH proxy username.

I'm not sure what your point is. None of that addresses the root issue

And as I said, restarting x2goserver, which restarts
x2gocleansessions, usually allows the Windows client to resume the
session. I don't know why, but it is a fact that it usually does the
trick for me (although not always, I'd say its around 90%)

What I responded to is an issue with x2gocleansessions. If it gets
started on ArchLinux systems and then disappears, it is quite obvious
that it crashes somewhere in its ,,while (sleep 2)''-loop.

So, you should find out why it crashes (it has been written in Perl).
Once that bug is found (IMHO it is distro specific), then the
originally addressed issue in this thread may be solved, as well.

Permanently restarting the x2gocleansessions script is a workaround,
not a solution.

I never said x2gocleansessions disappears. It is still there. Until
the restart, which kills it and starts it again.

Ah, ok... A misunderstanding on my side...

So, as the issue does not occur here (Debian based systems), the
question is, why is the while loop hanging when x2gocleansession is
handled via systemd...

Could you add some log messages, so that we can see if something
happens at all in the while loop?

You maybe need a bit more than a symlink. We use a wrapper script:
http://code.x2go.org/gitweb?p=nx-libs.git;a=blob;f=debian/wrappers/nxproxy

What happens if you launch nxproxy manually? Normally, it should show
some help information. If any library is missing, it will refuse to
launch and not show that help information.

If the two usernames (X2Go Server, SSH proxy) are identical, then you

If you have a competely different set of credentials for SSH proxy and

You need one of the many tools providing a notification-daemon. Please
install the appropriate notification-daemon package for your system:

dunst - Minimalistischer Benachrichtigungs-Daemon
libnotify4 - sendet Arbeitsflächenmeldungen an einen Meldungsdienst
notification-daemon - Daemon für die Anzeige aufklappender Nachrichten
notify-osd - Daemon, der passive Popup-Benachrichtigungen anzeigt
plasma-widgets-workspace - Plasma-Widgets und Widget-Gruppen für die
KDE-Plasma-Arbeitsfläche

xfce4-notifyd - Einfacher, visuell ansprechender Meldungsdienst für Xfce
mate-notification-daemon - daemon to displays passive pop-up notifications

In newer distro versions, there is no dbus service file provide
anymore, the notification-daemon needs to be launched via
/etc/xdg/autostart/...

The fix in PyHoca-GUI will be not make pyhoca-gui execute without
errors even if no notification-daemon is installed/started.

Please check, if changing the thin clients fstab file as shown in [1]

giving rw access to /var/lib/x2gothinclient for user x2gothinclient

Can't this be handled by PAM (e.g. pam_mount [1]) somehow???

In a subfolder of ~/media/disk.

You may want to install plasma-widget-x2go on the server and add it to

Android has had X for some time now:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.darkside.XServerhl=en

nxproxy is not yet there as far as I know.

Nope.

Yes, it might be a lot of work, but a worthy one: lots and lots of devices
come with Android.

Once we have nxproxy working on Android, then the rest rather needs
diligence than magic. If an X-Server and nxproxy is in place then the
rest of the X2Go client app writing (from scratch I suggest) is easy.

Isn't there a functionality that lets you run an quasi app on a webserver
that then allows you to use a browser to emulate an X2goclient?
I have heard that you did such functionality and that it is finished. That
would be the solution: just run a apache webserver and then on Android
connect to the webserver with a browser and use X2goclient like this.

The x2goplugin you are referring to. It needs nxproxy (shipped with
the plugin) and a local X-Server (on Windows: also shipped with the
plugin's XPI). Before anyone asks: there is no recent x2goplugin
version for Windows at the moment.

you would run into problems there already. Next up would be code to control
when to show an on-screen keyboard, and translating touches on the screen

A hardware keyboard would be a must (bluetooth), as otherwise you will lose
all screen real estate to the keyboard. But talking about Android also
means Tablets and on a 10 inch Tablet, X2go would be a totally wonderful
thing to use.

A further option is: use a tablet ready desktop shell in the X2Go
session (like plasma active). They normally come with a screen
keyboard. So, you just have to make sure that the Android screen
keyboard does not interfere with whatever software keyboard you use in
the X2Go Session.

Considering how many devices exist that run Android, the market would be
huge. You may even be able to charge for the app (like 1 or 2 dollars) as
the X2goserver is already free and totally amazing to use. Often, Android
users are convenience users, lazier than PC or Laptop users and will
preferably shell out some cash before looking around for a free alternative
that needs more work.
And I would definitely buy it for 1 or 2 dollars, it would be well worth it.

Charging is fine, a non-free license will not be supported by me
(personal statement). I vote give my time to that project if the
license is other than GPL or AGPL.

(providing a free trial version that is limited to 5 minutes for a session
so people can try it out would work great)

urgghhh... nononono...

to mouse input. To sum it up, I think it would require a lot of work to get
x2go to an even remotely usable state on Android.

You can also connect a mouse to an Android tablet/smartphone by the way. My
Gingerbread (2.3) Ice cream Sandwich (4.0) and Jelly Bean (4.2) Android all
supported plugging in a mouse and keyboard via USB connector, it just
treats it as HID, and simulates it, so you can use the cursor keys to more
from app icon to app icon or ESC to go back, as well as getting a mouse
pointer to click on stuff. I was amazed how dynamic this works.

Yeah.

Anyway, for the short term, the webserver solution should work easier.

This does not exist for Android!!! It only works (in theory) for those
platforms that X2Go Client is available for.

Re: [X2Go-User] Session resume fails with AFS home directories

2013-09-18 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi Sebastian,

On Mo 16 Sep 2013 16:17:31 CEST Sebastian Flothow wrote:

I did some further testing, and the resume failures are indeed due
to missing AFS tokens. When suspending a session, the SSH connection
is closed, sshd will call pam_close_session(), which means that
pam_krb5 and pam_afs_session will delete the user's ticket/token
(resp.). The session therefore loses access to the home directory
and appears to freeze up, preventing it from being resumed.

Both pam_krb5 and pam_afs_session accept retain_after_close as a
parameter, which disables the delete-on-close behavior. With this
parameter set, it becomes possible to resume sessions, unless the
AFS token has expired.

Thanks for digging this out. Good work!!!

This solves at least the case where the user reconnects quickly (eg.
after a short network outage), but it still means sessions will
become unresumable when left unused for a few days.

I get that. NFSv4 with Kerberos is very similar to the AFS token behaviour.

I guess the only way to avoid this is to not store session data in
the home directory. Can X2go be configured such that it uses eg.
/tmp or /var/lib for this purpose?

In earlier versions of X2Go every session detail was in $HOME. Some of
the session information has to be accessible by super-user root. Those
bits, I have already moved out of the home (e.g. the session.log file).

Normally, the AFS token should be immediately restored after SSH login
(which is the first action taken when resuming a session). However,
this AFS token does not re-awake the session so it can be resumed. The
question is why...

Does a session simply not resume (with an x2goagent still being
present for this session)? Or does the x2goagent crash somewhere on
the run (i.e. when the session is suspended and the AFS home freezes
some time later)?

When evoking x2golistsessions, the first field of each output line is
the x2goagent PID that is associated to that session in the same line.
With non-resumable sessions, please check if the x2goagent processes
remain active on the X2Go server or if the x2goagent processes crash
(disappear). I can only imagine that the x2goagent processes remain
alive (frozen) until the AFS token gets reinstated by the X2Go
resuming SSH login. If x2goagent crashes somewhere on the way, we have
to find out why and how to prevent it.

However, if x2goagent stays functional, we have to investigate, if
there is anything AFS-critical in /usr/bin/x2goresume-session. If you
look at the script /usr/bin/x2goresume-session, can you spot anything
that might fail on AFS?

Mike

I guess, we need to utilize the achievements of the USB/IP project [1]
for that. At the moment I have no resources to work on this for free
myself. However, you can contribute the first steps to the X2Go
project by testing USB/IP with X2Go.

[1] http://usbip.sourceforge.net/

My suggestion would be:

  o start an X2Go session
o provide USB/IP over a second SSH connection to the X2Go Server

The USB/IP provision has to be implementable completely in user space.
It is possible to promote a user with root privileges, but we should
avoid that.

If you could work on such a manual setup (as a research project) I
will be happy to work your results into the upstream X2Go code.

[X2Go-User] New feature for next PyHoca-GUI release (0.4.0.9): passphrase protected SSH keys

2013-09-03 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi all,

today I have added a new (long waited for) feature to PyHoca-GUI.

So far, in PyHoca-GUI (python-x2go) it was only possible to use
passphrase-protected / encrypted SSH keys via an ssh-agent process
that unlocks those keys when being added to the agent's keyring
previous to logging into an X2Go Server.

Unlocking those keys natively in PyHoca-GUI was not possible so far.
- Now it is!!!

The nightly built packages are currently building and the 0.4.0.9
preview of PyHoca-GUI will soon be available for testing this new
feature.

Within the next couple of days I will add the pendant feature to PyHoca-CLI.

Those of you using PyHoca-GUI may test this new feature by encrypting
your private key file...

  $ ssh-keygen -p

... and then using this key file in PyHoca-GUI. Don't add your key(s)
to ssh-agent to see the new passphrase dialog pop up.

WARNING: Make sure you do not forget the password for unlocking the
key, otherwise your key will be lost. It surely is a good idea to make
a backup of your SSH key files before playing with this.

It is as if information about the new resolution were not propagated
to gnome.

Is there a better way to do that?
(Is it a bug regarding the implementation of xrandr?)

Use MATE Desktop instead.

PS: It has nothing to do, but I've seen that x2goclient has an
maximize option. Unfortunately this affect only the window of the
session manager. It would be nice if the window of x2goagent could
also be maximized (and not only fullscreen or at custom resolution).
Isn't it?

AFAIK the maximize feature does not work on Windows atm. It works on
Linux just fine AFAIK. (At least the maxmimize window feature in
PyHoca-GUI works on Linux, but not on Windows).

Hope the hardware is well,

The defect harddrive has been replaced, RAIDs are still rebuilding but

Re: [X2Go-User] Login via ~/.ssh/authorized_keys fails

2013-08-27 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi Matthias,

On Mo 26 Aug 2013 23:54:55 CEST Matthias Kauer wrote:

Hi,
I am looking for input on how to set up an ssh key-based authentication.

I generated an RSA key pair with puttygen and added it to
~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 = confirmed that I can login with putty.
Now, I specify the same private key in x2goclient (windows). I enter my
password and I am then prompted for the password of the ssh key. I enter
it and the same ssh key password prompt reappears. This seems to be an
infinite loop. When I cancel it, I get a message saying that only
publickey is supported as login method (which corresponds to my
sshd_config settings).

I then tried renaming ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and using a DSA key pair.
putty still works as expected with both of these alternatives.
x2goclient still shows the same problems however. It only lets me login
if I adapt my sshd_config and authenticate via user / password combination.

Is this a known limitation?
What is the best way to achieve high security? Can I limit the x2go
connections to only LAN IPs (without restricting the pure ssh connections)?

I have just forwarded this issue to our bug tracker. I have observed
similar irregularities that desperately need a fix.

I'm glad to help. A really cool tool like X2go deserves a really great

I have been using it for a long time now, but might be a little shaky in
the internals. What I am good at though is seeing both the developers side
and the users side and be able to bridge it in documentation.
One thing that I would think would work great is to have an into page in
the wiki, called New to X2go? Start here! What is X2go and what does it
do?

I would write a little thing there about how Linux was basically always the
perfect Terminal server, BUT no easy free framework ever existed to use it.
That we used to envy RDP on Windows and that we now got the same thing and
much better on Linux. I especially want to point out what it can do (like
thinclient support which is super cool). On some details I might have to
ask you a few things, what what is, since I have seen that you added a ton
of new features that I am not even aware what they do (I for example never
used the desktopsharing function)

Get started then. Very good idea!

I would also like to do a bit there where I do a little FAQ like: I got X11
forwarding over ssh, why do I need X2go? (A think I hear all the time from
people) and point out what it can do more.

Yeah, please help improving that, as well.

Thanks!

Or is there another way I can contribute my time?

This is very cool!!! Yes, there are plenty of places to contribute to.
Documentation is definitely one part of X2Go that desperately requires
improvement.

Please go through the wiki and check for stuff that you would like to
improve / rewrite / extend. Simply start on that work and ping me if
you need feedback or review.

Also: please appear on the #x2go IRC channel on Freenode, so we can

outcome of my requests so far...

The ETA for the Dutch PyHoca-GUI translation is Wednesday 28th. So the
PyHoca-GUI release will be postponed till then.

If you run your computer in your local language and X2Go Client /
PyHoca-GUI appear(s) in Englisch on your screen, you may also feel
entitled joining the X2Go i18n / translation team. Translating
software is a task that non-developers can easily do. I will do my
best in supervising you ASAP, so you can get started with the
translation work right away.

We probably have a candidate for working on the Finnish translations
of X2Go components.

Hopefully, other people for not-yet-available languages join in.

/me \O/ yays to the (hopefully) prospective Finnish translator!!!

[X2Go-User] releases+translations of X2Go Client / PyHoca-GUI

2013-08-21 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi all,

currently we have two releases pending: X2Go Client and PyHoca-GUI.

Both projects are still hoping for people working on their translations:

X2Go Client: - Russion translation (Alex? Nable?)
  PyHoca-GUI: - Dutch translation (Anyone?)

The Dutch translator for PyHoca-GUI is currently on vacation, so maybe
someone else can jump in?

I will release those versions on 26th August (Monday next week) if no
more translations come in.

If you have any questions on X2Go translation work, please contact me
personally (or subscribe to x2go-i18n ML [1] right away and ask there).

Furthermore, we have a couple of translations incomplete. Thanks to
those who provided the work in the first place!!! However, I hope that
there are people on our mailing lists who feel entitled to continue
the work:

  X2Go Client: French, Chinese/Taiwan (zh_tw)
  PyHoca-GUI: French

If you run your computer in your local language and X2Go Client /
PyHoca-GUI appear(s) in Englisch on your screen, you may also feel
entitled joining the X2Go i18n / translation team. Translating
software is a task that non-developers can easily do. I will do my
best in supervising you ASAP, so you can get started with the
translation work right away.
