Then when I login to the same session again (on the same client, so no screen resolution change), the session stays up. It might be easier to discuss this over IRC, but I would have to see about timing (my time zone is PST) It would be good to have you on IRC. As already written, (1) make sure you are connected to irc.freenode.net (2) enter: /join #x2go (3) write: sunweaver: let me know when you are ready to discuss the newbie docs (or a-like) If you use someone's nick name (mine is sunweaver), then the line you write on IRC gets highlighted for me and I reply asap. For people working and living in different time zones then others in the team, it is very helpful to stay on IRC 24/7. This can be easily achieved if you have a machine that is online 24/7 and that is reachable via SSH. If that is the case for you, you may want to look at a screen+irssi setup [1]. Re: [X2Go-User] Buggy File Folder sharing
Package: x2goclient Tag: build-macosx Severity: important Version: 3.99.2.1 Hi Graham, hi Thierry, [I forward this bug repport to our bug tracker On Do 13 Mär 2014 15:01:42 CET, Graham Stoddart-Stones wrote: Thierry: Just to confirm that we are encountering the same problem with Mac OSX 3.5.1, X2Goclient 3.99.2.1: When you start up X2Goclient on the Mac, you get an error dialog: sshd client not started, you'll need sshd for printing and file sharing. In OSX, openssh-server is built-in, and is activated by setting Enable Remote Login in System Preferences Sharing, as many others have noted. However, this does not stop the error dialog from recurring every time. That leads to another error message File cannot be opened. If one ignores this, X2Goclient starts and runs normally, provided one wishes to neither print locally, nor share files from the Mac with the remote server. I have seen lots of other emails on this topic, suggesting that the error message does not necessarily apply to the Mac (ie sshd is in fact running, the error message simply means that the x2goclient code is looking for a response from a Linux-like file (which does not occur in the same place in OSX), similarly the File Cannot be opened again refers to a file that is either not used on a Mac, or is in a wholly different location from where that file is actually stored on a Mac. I have not seen this point formally answered anywhere. For me, the concern is that, whether sshd is running on the Mac or not, File Sharing does not appear to be working. I am not sufficiently familiar with X2Go nor with the Mac to know where to look on the server for the Mac shared folders, but I do know that there is nothing under media, as there is with Linux and a PC, which is where I normally look. Again, I have searched the bulletins and forums, and often seen this point raised - I have just not found the answer on how to get round it. So, am keen to see how you get on, and whether anybody else can please shed any light! Can you cross-check the observed problem with latest X2Go Client [1]??? Can you launch X2Go Client from a terminal on Mac OS X and use a tool like strace (if that exists) and check its output for pointers to file-not-found errors? That would be really helpful for tracking down this issue. The PXE server serves a complete linux chroot via NFS. For this you need quite some speed on the network, otherwise the thin client machine behaves slow. Also PXE is served via DHCP. [X2Go-User] Nightly builds for Fedora and EPEL
Hi all, thanks to one of our project sponsorers, IMMOBILIEN SCOUT 24, we will be able to provide nightly built RPM packages and RPM release packages directly from upstream in the (near) future. Our RPM packages currently build against various Fedora (18-21 atm) versions [1] and against EPEL (5+6) [2]. The nightly built RPMs still need some work here and there (QA work is still in process), but we are happy to share the test load. For those of you who start playing with our RPM builds: please use our X2Go bug tracking system to report RPM bugs [3]. Please tag your bug report with ''Tag: rpm-packages'', if you think the bug exists in the RPM package itself and not so much in the X2Go code. Don't report to your distro as the distro maintainers cannot help you when playing with package provided by X2Go upstream. We will do our best to support the Fedora packaging team of X2Go to merge our (as we think) improvements into the .spec (i.e. RPM packaging) files. We are trying to drop X2Go into an existing environment as a replacement for a current solution, and can't force a change in how users connect to the remote machines. For X2Go we really need to figure out how to get this working with a simple xhost + and setenv DISPLAY host:display. Running xhost + on a multi-user host is not a good idea, at all. If that is your setup of convenience, change it, as it 100% lacks security. People can access each others' clipboards and read+write content to/from it. Easily, one can sniff passwords etc. that get copied to the clipboard, etc. Interestingly, it looks like freenx/opennx work fine in this mode, but we would prefer not to use that solution as it appears to be a dead end. There must be something different about how freenx/opennx set up security vs X2Go, but I can't find much documentation on configuring security in X2Go. You probably have to play with the xauth command for making your desired setup work. (Though xhost + makes xauth unnecessary, so maybe not). Browsing through the list archive, I found a post from back in October where Mike said it happens due to a permission problem, and he posted two links to GIT where he had patched this (the first patch introduced a typo, which was fixed in the second patch). So I decided to give it a go and simply copy the x2gothinclient_create script from GIT over the one I already had on disk. Sadly, this just made things worse: after removing the chroot directory and rebuilding it with the new version of x2gothinclient_create, neither keyboard nor mouse work, so I can't even log in. Reverting back to the old script, rm'ing the chroot directory and running x2gothinclient_create again fixed that issue - but I still have no sound. Any hints? Which log or config file(s) should I post? I have just released x2gothinclient last Friday (1.1.0.1). It contains several fixes and features add-ons. However, it depends on X2Go Client 4.0.1.2 which is still to be released. Just copying x2gothinclient_create is a bad idea, as I introduced a new package x2gothinclient-chroot that takes care of several chroot issues and is intended to make the X2Go TCE upgradable in the future. The package is only available in the lucid ppa of X2Go. In later versions (starting with natty) GNOMEv2 was removed and replaced by GNOMEv3 and x2gognomebindings is for GNOMEv2 only. On git.x2go.org [1] we provide a package called x2gomatebindings.git which is the continuation of x2gognomebindings, only adapted to MATE. hi Michael, thanks for testing X2Go... On ServerB I can run 'x2golistsessions --all-servers' as a logged regular user however it fails on ServerA. Can't figure out why. The servers need to have identical home directories. The X2Go PostgreSQL database backend uses db passwords stored in ~/.x2go/sqlpass. If you have separate homes folders for the servers, then you have to make sure ~/.x2go/sqlpass is available for each user in all $HOMEs. 2. On ServerA I could run '/usr/lib/x2go/x2gobroker-agent ubuntu listsession' until I ran '/usr/sbin/x2godbadmin --adduser ubuntu' on ServerB, than ServerA broke. This makes sense. It really sounds like you do not have NFS'ed homes. So I think I know what is happening but can you confirm: 1. NFS is required for the sharing of /home/* because of configs that are stored under /home/user/.x2go/ for example the sqlpass file. 2. I need to run /usr/sbin/x2godbadmin --adduser username for every users that will login with an x2goclient? Is there a way to automatically run this? Some people do that via CRON job. Some people do that via tweaking sshd_config and they capture every SSH command starting with x2go* and run x2godbadmin then. 3. It looks like the broker is attempting to deploy SSH keys?? --snip-- 2013-11-09 16:10:39,837 - broker - DEBUG - Executing agent command on remote host (x2go-server): sh -c /usr/lib/x2go/x2gobroker-agent ubuntu addauthkey 'no-X11-forwarding,no-pty,no-user-rc ssh-rsa B3NzaC1yc2EDAQABAAABAQDWXTLaWn6lX+tQMkCrDkU7B+LnOYlmHxftCKamZWHH9ZQLODj+A9Lq9gq6bcBJCT3pQdbj2fr3HCiPiDAw5/vO2bs3ixhSy3nCevoJbRcz8bx1JiRQgAalb8yL9DeztsXnCqHb2Et3c3F78N8CFC0RuxoKtjEzrvB8DhgpE5OQdQwqG7GYZ6z6dXstSY85DRTwYer5CVyT18Luv3q8Gew8mThcFJIGgAHwSKByqwyTPitPll138a2VwmN5Wqd8+WfYdixYxLk52sc8lBhR55URxmNaRUtnXO1DTmoVUe/908wO5BBRA1S9yWLmC4EVPg2CiYN5oNCCBKNtUNLR4KMV ubuntu@192.168.1.3' '%h/.x2go/authorized_keys' --snip-- Where is this used? The x2goclient (QT version) is connecting to the broker over HTTPS and the x2goservers over SSH. The broker agent indeed deploys SSH keys. X2Go Client can receive such key when in broker mode and then straight forwardly log into the X2Go server. This then means, that the HTTPS connection must be trustworthy, because it is authoritive. Can I leave at least something that I've done or do I blow it all away and start over with nightly build codes? The broker .deb package is well maintained in upstream code. In theory, it should work to run make sudo make install. If you install the broker that way, the broker codes gets installed to /usr/local. Note: there is no configure script in x2gobroker. If it gets started on ArchLinux systems and then disappears, it is quite obvious that it crashes somewhere in its ,,while (sleep 2)''-loop. So, you should find out why it crashes (it has been written in Perl). Once that bug is found (IMHO it is distro specific), then the originally addressed issue in this thread may be solved, as well. Re: [X2Go-User] X2Go on Android
Hi Markus, hi Lucian, et al. first.. @Markus: didn't you want to work on the wiki's Get started page? It is dangling there as an empty page now and waiting for you to write it. On Mo 23 Sep 2013 14:37:33 CEST Nigra Truo wrote: I seriously doubt that it would work without any changes. X2go depends on a lot of X specific black magic, amongst others are nxproxy, which is a way to compress the X protocol. Android does not run X (as far as I know), so Android has had X for some time now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.darkside.XServerhl=en nxproxy is not yet there as far as I know. Nope. Yes, it might be a lot of work, but a worthy one: lots and lots of devices come with Android. Once we have nxproxy working on Android, then the rest rather needs diligence than magic. If an X-Server and nxproxy is in place then the rest of the X2Go client app writing (from scratch I suggest) is easy. Isn't there a functionality that lets you run an quasi app on a webserver that then allows you to use a browser to emulate an X2goclient? I have heard that you did such functionality and that it is finished. That would be the solution: just run a apache webserver and then on Android connect to the webserver with a browser and use X2goclient like this. The x2goplugin you are referring to. It needs nxproxy (shipped with the plugin) and a local X-Server (on Windows: also shipped with the plugin's XPI). Before anyone asks: there is no recent x2goplugin version for Windows at the moment. you would run into problems there already. Next up would be code to control when to show an on-screen keyboard, and translating touches on the screen A hardware keyboard would be a must (bluetooth), as otherwise you will lose all screen real estate to the keyboard. But talking about Android also means Tablets and on a 10 inch Tablet, X2go would be a totally wonderful thing to use. A further option is: use a tablet ready desktop shell in the X2Go session (like plasma active). They normally come with a screen keyboard. So, you just have to make sure that the Android screen keyboard does not interfere with whatever software keyboard you use in the X2Go Session. Considering how many devices exist that run Android, the market would be huge. You may even be able to charge for the app (like 1 or 2 dollars) as the X2goserver is already free and totally amazing to use. Often, Android users are convenience users, lazier than PC or Laptop users and will preferably shell out some cash before looking around for a free alternative that needs more work. And I would definitely buy it for 1 or 2 dollars, it would be well worth it. Charging is fine, a non-free license will not be supported by me (personal statement). I vote give my time to that project if the license is other than GPL or AGPL. (providing a free trial version that is limited to 5 minutes for a session so people can try it out would work great) urgghhh... nononono... to mouse input. To sum it up, I think it would require a lot of work to get x2go to an even remotely usable state on Android. You can also connect a mouse to an Android tablet/smartphone by the way. My Gingerbread (2.3) Ice cream Sandwich (4.0) and Jelly Bean (4.2) Android all supported plugging in a mouse and keyboard via USB connector, it just treats it as HID, and simulates it, so you can use the cursor keys to more from app icon to app icon or ESC to go back, as well as getting a mouse pointer to click on stuff. I was amazed how dynamic this works. Yeah. Anyway, for the short term, the webserver solution should work easier. This does not exist for Android!!! It only works (in theory) for those platforms that X2Go Client is available for. Re: [X2Go-User] Session resume fails with AFS home directories
Hi Sebastian, On Mo 16 Sep 2013 16:17:31 CEST Sebastian Flothow wrote: I did some further testing, and the resume failures are indeed due to missing AFS tokens. When suspending a session, the SSH connection is closed, sshd will call pam_close_session(), which means that pam_krb5 and pam_afs_session will delete the user's ticket/token (resp.). The session therefore loses access to the home directory and appears to freeze up, preventing it from being resumed. Both pam_krb5 and pam_afs_session accept retain_after_close as a parameter, which disables the delete-on-close behavior. With this parameter set, it becomes possible to resume sessions, unless the AFS token has expired. Thanks for digging this out. Good work!!! This solves at least the case where the user reconnects quickly (eg. after a short network outage), but it still means sessions will become unresumable when left unused for a few days. I get that. NFSv4 with Kerberos is very similar to the AFS token behaviour. I guess the only way to avoid this is to not store session data in the home directory. Can X2go be configured such that it uses eg. /tmp or /var/lib for this purpose? In earlier versions of X2Go every session detail was in $HOME. Some of the session information has to be accessible by super-user root. Those bits, I have already moved out of the home (e.g. the session.log file). Normally, the AFS token should be immediately restored after SSH login (which is the first action taken when resuming a session). However, this AFS token does not re-awake the session so it can be resumed. The question is why... Does a session simply not resume (with an x2goagent still being present for this session)? Or does the x2goagent crash somewhere on the run (i.e. when the session is suspended and the AFS home freezes some time later)? When evoking x2golistsessions, the first field of each output line is the x2goagent PID that is associated to that session in the same line. With non-resumable sessions, please check if the x2goagent processes remain active on the X2Go server or if the x2goagent processes crash (disappear). I can only imagine that the x2goagent processes remain alive (frozen) until the AFS token gets reinstated by the X2Go resuming SSH login. If x2goagent crashes somewhere on the way, we have to find out why and how to prevent it. However, if x2goagent stays functional, we have to investigate, if there is anything AFS-critical in /usr/bin/x2goresume-session. If you look at the script /usr/bin/x2goresume-session, can you spot anything that might fail on AFS? [X2Go-User] New feature for next PyHoca-GUI release (0.4.0.9): passphrase protected SSH keys
Hi all, today I have added a new (long waited for) feature to PyHoca-GUI. So far, in PyHoca-GUI (python-x2go) it was only possible to use passphrase-protected / encrypted SSH keys via an ssh-agent process that unlocks those keys when being added to the agent's keyring previous to logging into an X2Go Server. Unlocking those keys natively in PyHoca-GUI was not possible so far. - Now it is!!! The nightly built packages are currently building and the 0.4.0.9 preview of PyHoca-GUI will soon be available for testing this new feature. Within the next couple of days I will add the pendant feature to PyHoca-CLI. Those of you using PyHoca-GUI may test this new feature by encrypting your private key file... $ ssh-keygen -p ... and then using this key file in PyHoca-GUI. Don't add your key(s) to ssh-agent to see the new passphrase dialog pop up. WARNING: Make sure you do not forget the password for unlocking the key, otherwise your key will be lost. It surely is a good idea to make a backup of your SSH key files before playing with this. Unfortunately, this causes strange effects regarding the gnome desktop: the taskbar and the menu bar are truncated, dialog boxes are no more centered, etc. GNOMEv3 is totally disrecommended with X2Go. The XRandR support does not work with the resizing capabilities of X2Go's (N)X-Server (x2goagent). It is as if information about the new resolution were not propagated to gnome. Is there a better way to do that? (Is it a bug regarding the implementation of xrandr?) Use MATE Desktop instead. PS: It has nothing to do, but I've seen that x2goclient has an maximize option. Unfortunately this affect only the window of the session manager. It would be nice if the window of x2goagent could also be maximized (and not only fullscreen or at custom resolution). Isn't it? AFAIK the maximize feature does not work on Windows atm. It works on Linux just fine AFAIK. (At least the maxmimize window feature in PyHoca-GUI works on Linux, but not on Windows). Re: [X2Go-User] Login via ~/.ssh/authorized_keys fails
Hi Matthias, On Mo 26 Aug 2013 23:54:55 CEST Matthias Kauer wrote: Hi, I am looking for input on how to set up an ssh key-based authentication. I generated an RSA key pair with puttygen and added it to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 = confirmed that I can login with putty. Now, I specify the same private key in x2goclient (windows). I enter my password and I am then prompted for the password of the ssh key. I enter it and the same ssh key password prompt reappears. This seems to be an infinite loop. When I cancel it, I get a message saying that only publickey is supported as login method (which corresponds to my sshd_config settings). I then tried renaming ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and using a DSA key pair. putty still works as expected with both of these alternatives. x2goclient still shows the same problems however. It only lets me login if I adapt my sshd_config and authenticate via user / password combination. Is this a known limitation? What is the best way to achieve high security? Can I limit the x2go connections to only LAN IPs (without restricting the pure ssh connections)? I have just forwarded this issue to our bug tracker. I have observed similar irregularities that desperately need a fix. Hi Markus, On Mo 26 Aug 2013 12:10:39 CEST Nigra Truo wrote: I'm glad to help. A really cool tool like X2go deserves a really great documentation. I am always amazed how few people (especially here in the Westcoast of the US) don't know X2go. I have been using it for a long time now, but might be a little shaky in the internals. What I am good at though is seeing both the developers side and the users side and be able to bridge it in documentation. One thing that I would think would work great is to have an into page in the wiki, called New to X2go? Start here! What is X2go and what does it do? I would write a little thing there about how Linux was basically always the perfect Terminal server, BUT no easy free framework ever existed to use it. That we used to envy RDP on Windows and that we now got the same thing and much better on Linux. I especially want to point out what it can do (like thinclient support which is super cool). On some details I might have to ask you a few things, what what is, since I have seen that you added a ton of new features that I am not even aware what they do (I for example never used the desktopsharing function) Get started then. Very good idea! - http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:newtox2go I would also like to do a bit there where I do a little FAQ like: I got X11 forwarding over ssh, why do I need X2go? (A think I hear all the time from people) and point out what it can do more. Yeah, please help improving that, as well. Thanks! This is very cool!!! Yes, there are plenty of places to contribute to. Documentation is definitely one part of X2Go that desperately requires improvement. Please go through the wiki and check for stuff that you would like to improve / rewrite / extend. Simply start on that work and ping me if you need feedback or review. [X2Go-User] releases+translations of X2Go Client / PyHoca-GUI
Hi all, currently we have two releases pending: X2Go Client and PyHoca-GUI. Both projects are still hoping for people working on their translations: X2Go Client: - Russion translation (Alex? Nable?) PyHoca-GUI: - Dutch translation (Anyone?) The Dutch translator for PyHoca-GUI is currently on vacation, so maybe someone else can jump in? I will release those versions on 26th August (Monday next week) if no more translations come in. If you have any questions on X2Go translation work, please contact me personally (or subscribe to x2go-i18n ML [1] right away and ask there). Furthermore, we have a couple of translations incomplete. Thanks to those who provided the work in the first place!!! However, I hope that there are people on our mailing lists who feel entitled to continue the work: X2Go Client: French, Chinese/Taiwan (zh_tw) PyHoca-GUI: French If you run your computer in your local language and X2Go Client / PyHoca-GUI appear(s) in Englisch on your screen, you may also feel entitled joining the X2Go i18n / translation team.
