Hope this is clear enough...

a. yes, the SiS300 card is not being recognized by RH7.3, nor RH7.3 with
XFree86 version 4.3.0, on my system. Right now, Xconfig will only allow a
screen to show if the refresh rate is reduced to 60, color bit depth to 8,
and VESA selected.
No idea about RH.

b. I have attached the XFree86.0.log (there is also a copy at
ftp.evl.uic.edu/pub/INcoming/mgolter/xfree/. There was, as Cynthia
Grossen noted, a [drm] drmAgpAcquire failed error (as well a
*libglide2x.so missing* message which (apparently) has to do with 3DFX
cards, so I have ignored the .so message -- that message has not
re-appeared). Let me know if any other info is necessary to help amend the
situation?
1) Your not telling us *what*the*problem*is. Nice log, but from that I
can't see what is going on on the screen.

2) Generally: The SiS300 and especially the SiS301 are more or less
obsolete products. I have never seen a SiS300 card with a SiS301 for
secondary VGA output, hence I could never test this.

From the log I see that your monitor is connected to the secondary
output. Try the other one.

3) > (==) SIS(0): Depth 8, (==) framebuffer bpp 8

The color depth is 8. Is that intended?

c. Some day I would like to try to run some 3d graphics applications
(Performer, YG, CavernSoft) on this system. From the (your) Thomas
Winischhofer webpages I see SiS is one company that does not share
development info and perhaps this card is not a likely candidate for such
efforts?
It most certainly is not. The card is from around 1998...

(Note: until I saw the support for the SiS300 card listed under 4.3 I had
intended on picking up the SiS300 (your) *fix* on those (your) pages.
Then I thought mebbe it had been included in 4.3?
They are.

(WW) SIS(0): Monitor0: Using default hsync range of 28.00-33.00kHz
(WW) SIS(0): Monitor0: using default vrefresh range of 43.00-72.00Hz
That's very narrow. Sure that your monitor does not go beyond that?

by fglrxconfig: did u type setup at bootup? This gets you into the

card.

The drivers from ATI didn't work (I'm not alone in experiencing how
ineffectual they are!)

1) attempted to install the 4.2.X ATI drivers found

2) $>rpm -i : yields no ouptut, so

3) $>rpm -q :tells me the package

4) $>rpm -qpl : yields no output

5) Also I also can't seem to find where "fglrxconfig" is meant to be
installed let alone run it!

Hope this is clear enough...

a. yes, the SiS300 card is not being recognized by RH7.3, nor RH7.3 with
XFree86 version 4.3.0, on my system. Right now, Xconfig will only allow a
screen to show if the refresh rate is reduced to 60, color bit depth to 8,

b. I have attached the XFree86.0.log (there is also a copy at

Grossen noted, a [drm] drmAgpAcquire failed error (as well a
*libglide2x.so missing* message which (apparently) has to do with 3DFX
cards, so I have ignored the .so message -- that message has not
re-appeared). Let me know if any other info is necessary to help amend the
situation?

I have also attached a copy of a recent posting which seems pertinent as I
am considering installing RH8.0 to see if the situation improves (see
c. below)

c. Some day I would like to try to run some 3d graphics applications
(Performer, YG, CavernSoft) on this system. From the (your) Thomas
Winischhofer webpages I see SiS is one company that does not share
development info and perhaps this card is not a likely candidate for such
efforts?

(Note: until I saw the support for the SiS300 card listed under 4.3 I had
intended on picking up the SiS300 (your) *fix* on those (your) pages.
Then I thought mebbe it had been included in 4.3? However, being rather
new (!) to all this, and in light of the degrading situation, I now don't
feel confident about grabbing the *fix*. And remember tho notes were given
re support, that drm support was not included per se.)

Upshot: if running 3D Is within the realm of possibility while using the
SiS300, any help to try to get a working 3D display would be appreciated.
(Note: by 3D here, I am Not referring to active stereo, but the facsimile)
Let me know what (other) info might be necessary.

Thanks for your attention,

mgolter

Note: I have read a number of posts on ATI chips...most particularly the
Radeon 9000. Perhaps messaging one of those people who answered queries on
that type card (they tend to know one manufacturer well) would attract
attention? Do you keep these posts? (try [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- I sent
you one of his posts that mentioned Radeon's 9000)

-Did you have to edit the XF86config to take account of this change (I
have created mine with XFree86 - configure)
My Xconfig would not work until I reduced the refresh rate to 60, the
color bit to 8 and selected VESA...way bad, but was able to at least
increase the resolution to over 800x600!

Since I am not content (I got better results with the XFree86 version that
came with RH7.3 -- I only went to XFree86 ver4.3 as it promised SiS300
support which wasn't happening under the RH7.3 version (I forget which
version that is)), I am gonna try to go to RH8.0 and be content till I can
buy a new card... ;P

I'm beginning to see why Windows XP (which happily coexists with my
9000) is so popular!

Yes, I understand that a bit! I do dual boot with Win2K still as evidently
I too am far away from being ready/able to changeover ;[ !

Sorry I can't help you more...I keep checking all the posts and reading
elsewhere in hopes to find something that might put some light on this
subject. If I read anything (more), or get help from the Xconfig
people (before or after the upgrade), I will try to pass it on.

The linux and XFree4 install was so I can run some 3D
applications...but I

did not know that glide was so specifically aimed...the Real problem
was

that I couldn't get the X server configured at all. Right now I am
stuck with 16 bit color...(using generic VESA in Xconfigurator, which
is

not as good as what I could get with the XFree86 version that came with
RH7.3!

{I installed the 4.3 version as no other version even lists the SiS300
chip...and it looks like 4.3 doesn't really support it either...)

Thanks for info on the .so (so's I am not a gonna worry (esp since no

Just so you don't end up wasting your time

Glide is strictly a 3Dfx low level 3D video driver library which
talks directly to 3Dfx Voodoo and Banshee video hardware.

Glide 2 is for Voodoo Graphics I/II hardware, and Glide3 is for
Voodoo 3/4/5 and Banshee hardware.

Glide does not work on any other video hardware, and is totally
useless unless you have 3Dfx video hardware, in which case it
provides the layer between DRI and the 3Dfx video card for 3D
acceleration.

In short: You've got an SiS video card, and Glide is meaningless
as far as your system is concerned.

no, as I was informed the libglide3x.so was used only with 3Dfx cards
(Note: i have no idea why the message appeared -- on reboot it did not

Re: [XFree86] RE: Sis300 support in XFree86 version 4.3.0

2003-03-21 Thread Daniel

Melisa,

I get the same problem (missing libglide2x.so)  with XFree86
4.2.99.902 release (essentially 4.3) whilst trying to get my Radion 9000 pro to run in X under Linux Mandrake 9.0. How
did you solve this?

-Did you get create the soft link with the
libglide3x.so rather than libglide2x.so

-Did you have to edit the XF86config to
take account of this change (I have created mine with XFree86 –
configure)

I’m beginning to see why Windows XP
(which happily coexists with my 9000) is so popular!
