The Athlon64 is designed to be fully PC/x86-compatible: it works only in 32-bit mode unless one has a 64-bit operating system that turns on the appropriate hardware bits to make it a 64-bit machine - but I don't have such an operating system, so if the Athlon was operating in 64-bit mode I could not even boot. The fact is that the exact same program (the X server) and its supporting files, running on exactly the same hardware, was fully functional under the Linux-2.6.8-pre2 and earlier kernels and crash under kernels from Linux-2.6.8-pre3 onward, so it must be either a newly introduced kernel bug, or an old bug in the X server making wrong assumptions about some unpromised kernel behaviour. [XFree86] [BUG] Cannot open device /dev/psm0 Device not configured.
Hi, today something strange happened: During using X, my mouse starts to slow down und stopped. After a stop of X, I couldn't restart it. The last night I compiled a new xserver (from the FreeBSD ports collection), and today thet new xserver starts successfully - but only for the first time. I did NOT change any configuration! The message is: , | (EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/psm0 | Device not configured. ` Any ideas to fix that, that I can bring X to run? [XFree86] Possible XFree86 Bug
I shut down my Mandrake 10.0 system normally in order to boot an alternate (older) system, Mandrake 9.2. On reboot, the X server would not load because of a problem that had been introduced into the configuration file at line 36. I have had this exact problem (same line of the file) happen before, but infrequently - always, I think, when I have either booted a different kernel or an alternate system then returned to the normal Mandrake 10.0 with a 2.4 kernel. I can fix the problem by booting to the alternate system, removing the extra double quote from line 36, and rebooting, but I have no idea why the file is being rewritten in the first place. Because of the length of the supporting material, I have included it as an attachment. -- Gail Koontz Retired in my home state 836 Mallard Rd. ... and loving it! Re: [XFree86] bug ? - Module load failure: bitmapmod.o
Hi. I think I found the solution by myself... I had the HARDEND USE-flag set in /etc/make.conf (gentoo specific). I recompiled 2 times my system and the second time I used an kernel which was compiled with a nonhardend gcc compiler. But I suppose it would have been enough to recompile gcc (emerge -e gcc) and then to recompile X (emerge -e xfree). Bye the way... my VIM crashed also before always with a segmentation fault... now it works again :-) I found this solution on the web ... So sorry for posting here, but as I had no X it was difficult for me to search on the web first... ;-) Thnx for your answer anyways! Hi Knuth Could you also post you XF86Config file. Also after doing a emerge did you do an etc-update? to see if there were any config files needing to update? Gentoo would have saved you old config file as something else and needs you to update the new one with eny settings you had in the old one. [XFree86] bug in 4.4.0 i865 driver
I posted a brief note a week or so ago on problems with an i865 chip. I'm now fairly certain that I'm seeing a bug in 4.4.0 compared with 4.3.0. On 4.4.0, I'm seeing (EE) I810(0): No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth. On 4.3.0, it works. I tested both servers on NetBSD-current with the same config file on an HP dc5000. 4.4.0 always fails; 4.4.3 always works. [XFree86] BUG: mga driver crashes X when changing resolutions while moving within virtual screen
Hi, There seems to be a bug in the mga driver with matrox millenium videocard which crashes the X server while changing resolutions through vidmode extension, it can be reproduced this way: while running the script below make big circular movements with the mouse forcing the X server to follow the mouse and move the 640x480 window within the virtual resolution 1024x768. While changing back to 1024x768 the server crashes with signal 11. while true;do chgres set 640x480 sleep 3 chgres set 1024x768 sleep 3 done the chgres tools simply changes the resolution through the vidmode extension and can be found here: http://freshmeat.net/redir/chgres/14567/url_tgz/chgres-0.1.tar.gz I can reproduce the problem with mplayer too: mplayer -vo x11 -vm somemovie.avi the -vm option tells mplayer to change videomode to match the resolution of the video, and if you move the mouse hard while exitting it, you get signal 11 right at the moment of switching back to the original resolution. Changing the videodriver to vesa or using videocard of another brand makes the problem disappear which makes me believe it is in the videodriver. I'm using 4.3.0, tried the same setup with the driver from 4.4.0 and the problem is still here. My setup: slackware 9.1 kernel 2.4.26 , 2.4.24-pre2 (no difference) XFree 4.3.0 (mga driver from 4.3.0 and 4.4.0 - no difference) Attached is the XFree log file. [XFree86] [BUG] Suspend to disk support for i810 driver
Hi, when using swsusp 2.0.66 from swsusp.sf.net, with kernel 2.6.5 and an i810 card, I have almost everything working: I can suspend from X running, I get Xv acceleration working, but there are two issues remaining: 1. Performance is slower when getting back from suspend from a running X server as measured from xmame (sorry for the somewhat not serious test :)), but stoppping and restarting the X server works. 2. OpenGL is locked, in the sense that glxgears hangs up. Again, restarting X solves the issue. I asked about the latter on the -devel mailing list of swsusp, and one of the developers told me: You'll need to bug the X driver developers to POST your card at VT switch, just as the Radeon driver currently does. so here I am. thanks for attention Vincenzo ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

I gave the option mem=nopentium at boot and it seemed to have solved the instability with AGP ( the internal AGP driver of nvidia ), I say only seemed because there is no more freeze events in the first minutes after boot, and Xfree86 log says that nvidia internal agp has been successfully initialized, this advice was given in nvidia's notice, I have not tried it with agpgart yet, I am curious to understand what mem=nopentium acutally does and where was the instability thanks for your help edouard On Thu, Mar 18, 2004 at 11:18:56AM -0800, Mark Vojkovich wrote: On Thu, 18 Mar 2004, Edouard Debry wrote: I turned off AGP and there is no more problem (at least for now), but is it definitely impossible to use AGP ? what is wrong with AGP ? [XFree86] BUG: mouse behavior with linux 2.6.x
hello, I recently upgraded from linux 2.4.23 to 2.6.2 and this caused some problems with my mouse in XFree86. I have XFree86 4.3.0 (official slackware 9.1 build) and I use nvidia's binary video driver (version 5336 at the moment). My mouse is a ps/2 logitech mouse with a mouse wheel (s48). After I upgraded to linux 2.6.2, after starting up X, the mouse cursor didn't react to mouse movement for about 2 seconds of moving the mouse. After that, the mouse pointer did move, but the mouse wheel was not working. At that time I had Protocol set to Auto for my mouse and with kernel 2.4.23 the mouse was detected correctly and the mouse wheel worked. After I manually changed the setting to ImPS/2, the delay in mouse motion stopped and the wheel works again. i didn't find anything non-standard in my XFree86 logs, but there were some messages in the syslog. The first two messages have disappeared after changing Auto to ImPS/2, the rest still appears whenever X is started. I also get strange mouse behavior once in a while (once every 3 days or so): suddenly the mouse starts moving all by itself - it seems to go to one of the screens corners, but I can't really see where it goes. This motion stops at the moment I press any key. I don't think this could be attributed to dust in the mouse mechanism or anything similar - I believe it is also a bug. Excerpt from /var/log/syslog follows: Feb 11 14:54:16 nowy kernel: psmouse.c: Wheel Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away. Feb 11 15:46:17 nowy kernel: psmouse.c: Wheel Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away. Re: [XFree86] BUG: mouse behavior with linux 2.6.x
I know the bug, it appears to be something specific to kernel 2.6.2, I've used a number of 2.6 test/stable kernels with xfree devel snapshots since early october, have only had this problem when I updated to 2.6.2 and it disappeared when I updated that to 2.6.3. How I can resolve this? Apply this patch: http://cvs.pld-linux.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/SOURCES/XFree86-lnx_kbd.patch I've applied that to 4.3.0 and it does not fix the problem. The code that gets called to set the repeat rate is actually in lnx_io.c, as a more or less verbatim cut and pasted copy of lnx_kbd.c's code, and it is what ends up getting called. After closer inspection of things it appears to me, that this was a work in progress that never got finished cleanly perhaps? When the patch is applied to both files, it fails to compile with: lnx_io.c:93: warning: string length `565' is greater than the length `509' ISO C89 compilers are required to support lnx_io.c: In function `xf86SetKbdRepeat': lnx_io.c:216: `pInfo' undeclared (first use in this function) lnx_io.c:216: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once lnx_io.c:216: for each function it appears in.) [XFree86] BUG: XFree86 4.3.0 installation extract segfaults
BUG DESCRIPTION: While trying to install XFree 4.3.0 from the binary distribution, extract exits with a segmentation fault. FURTHER NOTICES: md5 checksum is correct however, extract --help does work. The segmentation fault only occurs while extracting. I'm running linux 2.6.0-test4 on a centrino system, object format is ELF, libc is 6.3.2, gcc 3.3.2. Binary distribution I used is Linux-ix86-glibc23. For now, I have not tracked down the problem further. The server won't work without them, so if it worked you must have had them at some point. It sounds like something deleted them, and I have no idea what in RedHat would have done that. Sounds like you need to reinstall XFree86. Do they show up anywhere? Run locate libbitmap.a locate libpcidata.a Mark. Re: [XFree86] bug
Specificially, what is the problem? I don't see any fatal error in that log file. It looks like you don't have the DRI's kernel module installed (drm), but I suspect you don't actually need that and the dri warnings would go away if you didn't load the dri module in the XF86Config file. Do you already have an instance of the server running on the machine? If you don't have another server running (or don't think you do) then remove (the file located in) /tmp/(called or containing the phrase) .X0-lock and start again. If you do have another server running, close it and try again or launch the second server with the appropriate options (one example: startx -- :1) HTH, cyn -Original Message- From: bancal [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 05, 2003 11:17 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [XFree86] bug report ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
[XFree86] [BUG] Server lockup using xine with Xv (overlay) / driver: i810 [Chipset intel 830M] -= XFree86 4.3.0 =-
Hello all at XFree86-Team ! I appreciate your work very much. Yesterday I fetched your latest stable release 4.3.0 and it built successfully on my Debian GNU/Linux 'Woody' 3.0 system on my Acer Travelmate 261XC notebook. After some acrobatics (moving the old XFree release out of the way ;) ), I managed to get it to work. I decided to watch some DVDs with xine so I got their latest release as well and built libxine with XVideo extension support. It all went fine just until the point when I clicked the play button: The video output window just showed blue in blue and the whole X server locked up after a few seconds (audio continued to play a few seconds). Without Xv (using plain XShm interface) everything works like a charm. I am sending my session logfile, I hope you can fix this bug. Thanks in advance. -- Simon Kalteis http://kernelspace.de/ Bitte senden Sie mir keine Word- oder PowerPoint-Anhänge. [XFree86] [Bug 43] RFE: Add Keyboard Macro Facility (to X Server)

I had looked a little, but I guess I was somewhat confused. (I'll explain my confusion at the end of this post.) In any case, I'm willing to look further. What is an X extension? I guess that's not a standalone X client or porgram? Is it C code (i.e., a library) or similar that I can use to write a program? Would that be attached to the X server or would what I write become another X client? I'm going to send a post to the mail list asking for some guidance on how to dig into the X documentation -- a general question and some specific questions -- I thought about putting it here, but it would be somewhat hidden and may have more general appeal than to just people interested in following this bug. Back to my confusion about Xtest: I had looked at these four pages: * http://www.handhelds.org:8080/wiki/XTest * http://www.handhelds.org:8080/wiki/XTestFakeKeyEvent * http://www.handhelds.org:8080/wiki/XSendEvent * http://www.handhelds.org:8080/wiki/GeneratingSyntheticEvents (Now looking at the URLs, I realize they may not be authoritative, but maybe everything they say is correct. I was probably confused by two things: * the label on the event is a method for generating fake keyboard events: XTestFakeKeyEvent (but of course, it does not say that the fake events can be recognized as fake, and on another page Jim Gettys does say The XTest extension allows an application to synthesize input indistinguishable from real input) -- so, maybe there is no problem here * from my investigations and trials with gtkeyboard, I was led to believe that for gtkeyboard (an x client) to send events to another x client (my target current application), the current application had to allow SendEvents. And it appears (because gtkeyboard didn't work with them), that some of the applications I want to use have taken steps to avoid receiving SendEvents. Note that my terminology may be incorrect because I really don't know what I'm talking about -- I'm just trying to stumble through this somehow. --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

It is like being in Virtaul Desktop mode even though the display and virtaul size are the size. The bottom of the screen in truncated leaving a frame at the bottom while the other edges go off the screen as in overscan mode. Also, only about 2/3 of the desktop is actually visible. The driver reports the chip as Silicon Motion SM720 although the documentation says the version is SM722. The same affect also occurs if using a vesa driver. Works fine when not in TV out mode which is set in BIOS. Tried all BIOS options with no luck.
