Re: Media request: Upcoming article highlighting Xubuntu

2024-02-14 Thread Pasi Lallinaho

Hello Cristian!

Thank you for contacting the Xubuntu team about a possible article on
HostingAdvice.com and sorry for us taking so long to reply.

We of course do not have anything against articles written about
Xubuntu! However, the situation is (and has been for some years now)
relatively stale: no new big or exiting features are being added and
there isn't anything to report on the leadership side either. If there
was exiting news, they would very likely be changes/updates in Xfce.

That said, Xubuntu is still maintained to a reasonable extent: for
example, as implied before, new Xfce pakcages are being brought to the
Ubuntu repositories. Some other small tweaks and updates are being made
now and then. This is all done by a small group of people (depending on
how you count, somewhere between 1–5 people) who are all formerly very
active Xubuntu team members.

I don't know if the above piques your interest and/or bears an
interesting perspective to Xubuntu, but if it does or if you have other
ideas for an article, we would be willing to hear more.

Additionally, if you need more information (including an interview)
about the current state or the history of Xubuntu, please do not
hesitate to ask.

Cheers,
Pasi

I just wiped my flash drive. For the website team - omission on the website.

2024-02-02 Thread Greg
Hi,

I just wiped my USB stick flashing the xubuntu ISO.

This could have been prevented by one additional sentence being present in the
'Write to USB or SD' section of the documentation.

https://xubuntu.github.io/xubuntu-docs/user/C/installation.html#preparation

'Please be aware that the existing data on your flash drive (/USB stick) will
be deleted upon flashing the ISO', or something along those lines, would be
sufficient. Please could you edit your documentation to this effect.

Compare to the Windows download ISO webpage, in the 'Before you begin' section:

'A blank USB flash drive with at least 5 GB of space or blank DVD (and DVD
burner) if you want to create media. We recommend using a blank USB or blank
DVD, because any content on it will be deleted.'

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10iso

Generally speaking, Linux documentation is simply not noob-proof enough. This
is not good enough.

Kind regards,
Greg--

Today LTS upgraded my two Xubuntu 20.04 systems to 22.04, only one issue observed so far

2023-02-13 Thread Michael Lueck

Greetings Xubuntu Developers,

Today LTS upgraded my two Xubuntu 20.04 systems to 22.04. I only observed one
issue:

After the upgrade and necessary IPL to end up on the 22.04 system, I now have
three network top tray icons.

I compared with a VM installation of clean Xubuntu 22.04 the applets in the top
panel. I removed one that was not present on the clean Xubuntu 22.04. However I
still had three copies of the network icon.

What is the correct way to clear up the triplicate network applet issue?

<><><>

Also, note... I have pinned some back level Firefox packages from the UbuntuZilla repository. The upgrade refused to start until I commented out the UbuntuZilla repo. Sort of odd... since the LTS
upgrade itself disabled third party repos. There was no explanation of why the upgrade would not begin... just "poof" the upgrade window disappeared. I tried the upgrade several times. Then I
commented out the UbuntuZilla repo, and the upgrade began. Sort of would be very helpful to pop a information box that the upgrade refuses due to software held back to older versions of the packages.

Excellent work, Xubuntu team!

I am thankful,

I'd like to keep NewFlavorProcess minimal to keep things simple for
prospective flavours, so I went ahead and documented this in AddingNew
which I see more as internal documentation for the release team.

But it's a wiki, so everyone should feel free to adjust as they think

My thinking is along the same lines. I'd like to avoid tying up things
in bureaucracy, so I think it's fine to leave it to the Release Team to
decide if it's obviously and uncontroversially aligned, or if they are
unsure if the Technical Board would agree and therefore need to refer
it.

I'd like for these decisions to be documented though. Maybe we could ask
that the technical-board@ list be copied in with an description of the
goals of the new image and the Release Team's decision on it? That way,
we can ensure that we all stay aligned, and minimise pain if we're not.

I think this makes a lot of sense - if it is up to the discretion of the
Release Team to refer to the TB then there could be cases that get
missed which would have been beneficial for the TB to be aware of but
for whatever it was not deemed necessary to notify the TB. So instead if
the policy is that the TB is always kept-in-the-loop regardless there
should be less chance of something being missed.

Also given that new images are a pretty rare occurrence, this shouldn't
be too onerous on either team as a result.

New image for existing flavor: Xubuntu Minimal

2023-01-11 Thread Steve Langasek
Dear TB,

On behalf of the Release Team, I'm writing to (officially) inform you that
the Xubuntu Team will be releasing a new official image starting with Ubuntu
23.04, Xubuntu Minimal, in addition to Xubuntu Desktop.

This parallels existing minimal install targets from the Ubuntu Desktop and
Ubuntu Server images to provide a smaller install footprint without
applications that the developers want installed as part of the default
experience, but which are not essential. Unlike the Ubuntu Desktop and
Ubuntu Server, it is delivered as a separate image to additionally support
smaller install media (specifically, it is targeted to fit on a classic
CD-ROM).

Particularly as this is a smaller image, I do not anticipate any impact on
existing infrastructure capacity.

Merge proposals for setting up this new image are:

https://code.launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/ubuntu-cdimage/+git/ubuntu-cdimage/+merge/435316
  https://code.launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/debian-cd/+git/debian-cd/+merge/435314

Re: Community flavors and new images

2023-01-09 Thread Lukasz Zemczak
Hey Steve,

From my side, I think what you're proposing is sane so I'd be +1 on
leaving it up to the release team's decision. But looking at the new
flavour process (the one in the works), I think we still need to make
sure we assess the type of the image that the given flavor is adding
and make sure that it's still in-line with the flavor that the TB
approved. The TB is responsible for making sure that the flavour, and
its images, are in line with the goals of the Ubuntu project. I don't
think it's needed to reaffirm this in every case when a new image is
to be added, but the release team needs to make sure to cycle back to
the TB in case there's doubts that this is still the case.

Cheers,

Community flavors and new images

2023-01-07 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi folks,

In light of the recent activity on clarifying policies and procedures for
new flavors, I thought it was appropriate to bring this question to the TB
for review.

The Xubuntu team are proposing to have a new official Xubuntu image called
Xubuntu Minimal (né Core) and have raised MPs to get it landed on the
centralized build infrastructure
(https://code.launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/debian-cd/+git/debian-cd/+merge/435314
et al).

In the past, flavors (including Ubuntu) have introduced new images without
requiring additional TB approval; e.g., Kubuntu Active, Lubuntu Next, and
the Ubuntu Desktop canary image. These were all handled directly through
the Release Team.

I think this makes sense, because there are no governance questions here; if
there is already a flavor team responsible for one image, we just need to
make sure they're taking responsibility for 2, with the existing team, seed
structure, etc.

Do you agree?

Thanks,

Hi Graham,
we've resolved all of our issues by now.
I do not know if you need to get your list trimmed down, after all
that will need you to build things again and sometimes resources are
scarce.
So this is an FYI for you if you want/need to trim the list via
rebuilds/refreshes/deletions-form-your-ppa.

We initially had more and fixed a few, but the currently remaining
list holds 5 entries left for the server team:

- Dns-root-data is actually an issue in ldns fixed in jammy-proposed
by ldns https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ldns/1.7.1-2ubuntu4
You could consider a rebuild against proposed to get this one green.

- postgresql-14 was broken by llvm-14, a fix is uploaded to jammy and
built fine (https://launchpad.net/bugs/1966319)
You can rebuild the very same, or if you have a less-overhead way to
do it just consider this one as done.

- python-tempita was broken by python-3.10, not yet fixed but we know a way
  - Note it’s an openstack package - not server anymore, but we wanted
to fix it anyway.
  -
https://code.launchpad.net/~ahasenack/ubuntu/+source/python-tempita/+git/python-tempita/+merge/417740

- samba shows to build fine in the latter 0ubuntu4
  - https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2:4.15.5~dfsg-0ubuntu4
  - consider to remove or rebuild it yourself to pick it up

- Mysql is one of the !log cases
  - we didn't want to trigger a rebuild on our side just to ask you to
do one again (wasted time)
  - instead could you please just rebuild that in your ppa as it
should actually be good already

I know I said 5, but as a bonus:

- Ruby-rexml is fixed for a few days already before the report was sent.
Please consider rebuilding all orange ruby* packages (reference LP: #1966201).

Yeah, this has been reported to us (Launchpad), but for the record we
have no handle on a fix at present. The basic symptom is that
buildd-manager timed out trying to poll the builder (probably over
several attempts). This is either because the builder crashed or hung
or something like that (possible under load, and sometimes particular
builds will repeatedly OOM a builder or similar), or because of a
network failure that meant we lost contact for too long, or because of a
buildd-manager bug. Unfortunately it's extremely difficult even for us
to tell which at present. Ubuntu test rebuilds tend to exacerbate this
sort of thing, because the whole system is under significantly more load
than usual.

It's something that we'll keep trying to debug, but it's not as simple
as a single buggy build machine, and so I want to set expectations that
this may not be something we can fix quickly.

I'm seeing a lot of failed arm64 builds without build logs. In the past when
I've seen this, I've merely retried the build and it has succeeded. This shows
a pattern in that it's likely we've got a buggy build server.

Failing to be able to boot from a system built with daily 22.04 from 2022-02-26

2022-02-27 Thread Michael Lueck

Greetings Xubuntu developers,

I had not pulled a daily ISO since 2021-12-20. I applied about a month or so worth of updates all at once via Synaptic. I ended up loosing Nvidia display, it stalled, so I ended up having to force
packages to finish applying once I could get video back via: sudo dpkg --configure -a

Also I needed to switch to a non Debian / Ubuntu based distro on the test machine to prove out if an unrelated defect was coming from Debian / Ubuntu origins only. I needed to stick with something
Xfce desktop based, so I selected Manjaro manjaro-xfce-21.2.2-220123-linux515.iso I had to install that several times in order to get it to boot from the hard disk. I finally had to have it do its
own partitioning... not manually re-using the partitions Xubuntu had created.

Coming back to yesterday's daily Xubuntu 22.04 ISO, I still cannot get the
system to boot from the hard drive.

I have the motherboard set to EFI boot mode.

I have wiped the partitions again, this time with the Xubuntu daily DVD. As a
first partition I create a 500 MB EFI partition. The rest of the drive I want
as a XFS formatted / (root) partition.

The load finishes, the installer ejects the DVD, it still does NOT display the text to press any key to restart the system (defect reported earlier by me), and then the system goes through the BIOS,
lands at a black screen with blinking cursor, forever.

I booted back off the Xubuntu installer DVD. I inspected the partitions with Gparted. That raised an error that it wanted the mtools p[package added to be able to interrogate the EFI partition
properly. I exited GParted, added that via apt-get, restarted GParted, no more error. (Note to add that to the package configuration of the LiveCD mode.)

The Xubuntu installer marked the EFI first partition only with flag msftdata. I added the flag boot, which also automatically added the esp flag, and removed the msftdata flag. I exited the LiveCD
mode. The system still refuses to boot from the hard disk... after BIOS POST, just a blinking cursor in the top left corner on a black screen.

Any suggestions, please?

I am thankful,

Xubuntu daily 20211220 went very smoothly, feedback to the team

2021-12-20 Thread Michael Lueck

Greetings Xubuntu team,

Xubuntu daily 20211220 went very smoothly.

The only odd thing I encountered during the installation was: At the end of the installation, the message about ejecting the DVD was a bit odd... showed "failed" as the status, but the CD drive did
open as expected. I never saw the "Press any key to reboot the system" message... however pressing the space bar key did restart as expected.

About the default theme settings: As usual with the Xununtu defaults, I have a very hard time getting the corner of the window clicked to be able to resize in both directions at the same time. I
prefer to use the following adjustments, to achieve a much easier window resize result:

Appearance Style: Adwaita
Appearance Icons: elementary Xfce darker
Window Manager Style Theme: Moheli

With these settings, I find it MUCH easier to grab the corners of windows.

I will continue testing.

I am thankful,

[TEAM] Scheduling the next community meeting

2021-11-04 Thread Sean Davis
Hello Xubuntu Team!

I'd like to schedule our first community meeting for the Jammy Jellyfish cycle
for sometime next week. I've created a Doodle poll below. Please vote on any
times that you might be able to join in. If these times don't work for the
team, we can schedule something for the following week instead.

https://doodle.com/poll/yufbf2diivabxvfu?utm_source=poll_medium=link

Please only vote on the Doodle poll if you're in the Xubuntu team or one of the
subteams.

Looking forward to chatting!

22.04 Xubuntu Schedule

2021-11-02 Thread Sean Davis
Hello everyone!

Congratulations on making it to another LTS! It's been a long road and I think
we're starting from a really good place. I'd like to propose a schedule for
this cycle so we have a bit of structure and make sure that we end the cycle
with a top-notch release. I've drafted the schedule here:

https://wiki.xubuntu.org/releases/22.04/schedule

Some key milestones I've included are:
 * Wallpaper contest
 * Finalizing our updated documentation
 * Getting back into a semi-regular schedule of community meetings
 * Participating in the Ubuntu Testing Weeks
If you have any other suggestions or want to hash things out, let me know.
Let's all get together this cycle and make something really awesome.

Thanks,
Sean--

Issues with how Xubuntu 20.04.2 deals with vendor binary drivers - nvidia and VirtualBox

2021-09-23 Thread Michael Lueck

Greetings,

I have run into issues with how Xubuntu 20.04.2 deals with vendor binary
drivers - nvidia and VirtualBox.

When installing Xubuntu 20.04.2, I check the box to have the installer add additional software / proprietary drivers. I believe for version 20.04.2 that ends up automatically installing the nvidia-465
drivers.

Installation completes, then I yank the LAN cord so that it does not start
automatically applying updates once I IPL the system.

I log in, then go to Settings \ Software and Updates, to make the following
changes:
Updates tab:
For other packages, subscribe to: All Updates
Automatically check for updates: Daily
When there are security updates: Display immediately
When there are other updates: Display immediately
Notify me of new Ubuntu version: For long-term support versions

Then I apply, close the window, plug the LAN cord back in.

Next I install the language pack it offers.

Once that is done I install synaptic.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install synaptic

Then I start Synaptic
Refresh the package list in there
Select all updates
Mark all Mozilla Thunderbird packages for purge
Download and apply the rest of the updates

IPL

Then I set to purging off the prior kernel. First just with the one grep to
find the old version, then with both greps to filter for just the packages I
need to purge off.

dpkg -l | grep linux- | grep "5.8"

Now the tangle

Like I said, I am fairly confident that I recall the version correctly... Xubuntu 20.04.2 installs nvidia-465 drivers for the Nvidia boards / chips in my machines. Somewhere along the way, nvidia-465
drivers were retired and replaced with nvidia-470 drivers. This transition makes a horrid mess of my systems!

Going to the Settings \ Additional Drivers, it states that an unrecognized version of the video drivers are installed, and it will not mess with what is installed. All nvidia driver options are greyed
out.

So I need to purge off everything nvidia related. Then IPL. Thus...

dpkg -l | grep nvidia

sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-5.8.0-41-generic linux-hwe-5.8-headers-5.8.0-41 linux-image-5.8.0-41-generic linux-modules-5.8.0-41-generic linux-modules-extra-5.8.0-41-generic libnvidia-cfg1-470:amd64
libnvidia-common-470 libnvidia-compute-470:amd64 libnvidia-decode-470:amd64 libnvidia-encode-470:amd64 libnvidia-extra-470:amd64 libnvidia-fbc1-470:amd64 libnvidia-gl-470:amd64
libnvidia-ifr1-470:amd64 linux-modules-nvidia-470-5.11.0-36-generic linux-modules-nvidia-470-generic-hwe-20.04 linux-objects-nvidia-470-5.11.0-36-generic linux-signatures-nvidia-5.11.0-36-generic
nvidia-compute-utils-470 nvidia-kernel-common-470 nvidia-kernel-source-470 nvidia-prime nvidia-settings nvidia-utils-470 screen-resolution-extra xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-470

Once that is done, I may go back into Settings \ Additional Drivers, select to install
the "nvidia-driver-470 (proprietary, tested)" drivers, IPL again.

Now returning to Settings \ Additional Drivers shows said drivers are the ones
that applet thinks are active.

Also with VirtualBox 6.1 PUEL, with the various kernel and/or nvidia updates, I have needed to purge off, IPL, and reinstall VirtualBox 6.1 MANY times. After either kernel or nvidia binary package
updates, VirtualBox will not be able to start VM sessions.

So I am concluding that Xubuntu and binary drivers are not playing nice together. PLEASE... get that working better for Xubuntu 22.04 LTS. This is not friendly... I still hope to be overseeing
thousands of Xubuntu machines. This would be a nightmare in such a scale!

I inquired about the problems on this thread:

"20.04.2 system upgraded working Nvidia drivers 465 to 470 that get package
errors"

Website error -- Xubuntu LTS 20.04 torrent link broken -- points to older, non-existent .torrent file for 20.04.2 instead of 20.04.3

2021-09-16 Thread richardhardt

Hi.

Noticed the torrent link for Xubuntu 20.04 LTS is no longer working.
Looks like Xubuntu's LTS version recently changed to 20.04.3 and
Xubuntu.org's download link still points to the older 20.04.2 torrent --
which no longer exists.

_Main page with broken 20.04 LTS torrent download link I'm referring to._
*https://xubuntu.org/download*

_The broken 20.04 LTS torrent download link on that page points to this.__
_*https://torrent.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/focal/release/desktop/xubuntu-20.04.2.0-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent**
*
_It should point to this.__
_*https://torrent.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/focal/release/desktop/xubuntu-20.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent**

If someone will update the 64-bit torrent download link on that download
page to reflect the new 20.04.3 torrent file on the backend download
server, should fix it up.

Sincerely,

Richard

Re: Question / Idea of using Xubuntu on a notebook computer

2021-09-06 Thread notebook

Hi

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. In case you don't find anything,
you could use this shell script, that I'm using:

---
scriptfilePath="$(readlink -f $0)"
workingDir=$(dirname "${scriptfilePath}")
toggleFile=$workingDir"/toggleIndicator"

if [ ! -f $toggleFile ]; then
xinput --enable "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
echo "1" > $toggleFile
else
xinput --disable "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
rm $toggleFile
fi

-

Take a look at the two `xinput` commands. You need to find out, how your stick
and touchpad are called (use `xinput --list`) and replace the names with the
names on your computer.

I put the script as ~/.config/touchpad/touchpadToggle.sh and mark it as executable
(right click-> properties -> permission -> checkbox on bottom)

I then set a command in `Keyboard` (Mouse Menu -> Keyboard -> "Application
Shortcuts"):
/bin/sh /home/[YOUR_USERNAME]/.config/touchpad/touchpadToggle.sh
I'm using Shift+Ctrl+Space as Shortcut.

Regards
Chris

First Impish Indri test rebuild / GCC 11

2021-08-09 Thread Matthias Klose
The first test rebuild of Impish Indri was started on August 05 2021 for
all architectures, all components. The rebuild is finished on amd64 and i386 for
all components, and finished for all architectures for the main component.
Still running for universe and multiverse for non-x86 architectures.

Results (please also look at the superseded builds) can be found at

https://people.canonical.com/~doko/ftbfs-report/test-rebuild-20210805-impish-impish.html

The rebuild was done with a few packages which are not yet in the impish release
pocket. These are:

 - glibc 2.34
 - linux (linux-libc-dev), only in the proposed pocket
 - golang-defaults pointing to golang-1.17

GCC 11 is now the default compiler; there are no bug reports filed in LP for
build failures triggered by GCC 11, however there are reports in the Debian BTS.

On the topic of themes...

I prefer a theme that is easy to mouse grab the corner of the window to be able
to resize in both directions at the same time.

Lately (recent LTS releases of Xubuntu), this has a been very challenging
operation to perform with the shipping defaults.

Currently in Xubuntu 20.04.2, I am running with:
Appearance Style: Adwaita
Appearance Icons: elementary Xfce darker
Window Manager Style: Moheli

From the linked page...

My suggestion is to increase it to 28px which is the lowest even number
from the sizes listed above and would allow 24px icons to appear in the
panel with 2px padding above and below. It is the default I use both on my
1366x768 laptop and 1440x900 desktop. Alternatively we can go up one or two
notches to 30px or 32px to have even more padding and improving the panel's
visibility at 1080p and higher.

So I tried out 28px... that seems huge compared to the default 24px.

"Fine, if you must." I will be setting my top panel manually back to 24px.

And I run at screen resolution 2560 x 1440.

I like lots packed onto my screen.

2. Add Firefox and Thunar pinned launchers

Does not bother me either I will keep on manually setting the launchers as
I like them.

Regarding your objection to gnome-chess due to it possibly having GTK4, i'm

Re: [Team Vote] Various updates to the Xubuntu Seed

2021-07-16 Thread Sean Davis
Thanks Pasi. That's a good point. Since Rhythmbox is in, Pragha is out. Now we
just wait for Simon and Unit193 to decide the fate of the last ones.

Re: [Team Vote] Various updates to the Xubuntu Seed

2021-07-16 Thread Pasi Lallinaho

Here's my votes for the yet unsettled ones:

+0 for Baobab
-1 for Pragha (since we're already installing Rhythmbox)
+0 for xfce4-appmenu-plugin
-1 for xfce4-clipman-plugin
-1 for the games change

Cheers,
Pasi

Hey everyone, long time no chat! :)

There are a few discussions that have been opened up in recent
months for changes to the seed. I wanted to continue this
discussion with some team votes so we can move forward. With
each of the discussions I've linked the original ML and bug reports.

Xubuntu Team
(https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-team/+members#active
) currently
has 7 active members, so any proposal reaching 4 or more +1s
from the team is approved. Please take some time soon to submit
your votes so we're not all waiting in anticipation.

---

Addition of disk utilities
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/1934932
,
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-devel/2020-March/011877.html
)
- gnome-disk-utility
- baobab

I'm personally +1 for both. Yousuf is also +1 as requester.

---

Addition of music player
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/1934926
,
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-devel/2021-May/012062.html
)
- rhythmbox, or
- pragha

I don't have a strong opinion here since I stream all of my
music, but it looks like there is community interest based on
the mailing list. After installing both and doing a quick
comparison, my preference would be for rhythmbox.

+1 rhythmbox
+0 pragha

---

Clipman and Appmenu Plugin, installed but not added to panel by
default
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/1934925
,
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-devel/2021-April/012055.html
)
- xfce4-appmenu-plugin
- xfce4-clipman-plugin

I'm +0 for both. I don't think there's much utility to
preinstalling these plugins. If we want to satisfy installing
them for the panel profiles app, we should extend the panel
profiles app to download the missing packages with PackageKit.

Yousuf is +1 as requester.

---

Games
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/1916991
)

Remove: gnome-mines gnome-sudoku
Add: four-in-a-row gnome-chess gnome-nibbles quadrapassel

I'm +1 for these changes. Yousuf is also +1 as requester.

---

Thanks everyone!

Re: [Team Vote] Various updates to the Xubuntu Seed

2021-07-15 Thread Yousuf Philips
Hi Sean,

Thanks for pushing this forward.

+1 for rythmbox for me as well, as I mentioned that it was my
recommendation in the ML email.

Votes are also needed for the addition of the Arc and Numix Blue Gtk themes.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/1914424

@Michael, Krytarik: Sean forgot to share the mailing list link for the
games and as mentioned in my email, both mines and sudoku are available in
the SGT Puzzle Collections games app which is pre-bundled.
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-devel/2021-May/012056.html

@Krytarik: Thanks for mentioning the pidgin removal.

Regards,
Yousuf

While I specifically don't see any rationale on removing two of the

and I currently increase the workspaces to 16.

I do not add clipman, but I do know people who add it / make use of it.

I would say since the standard is to use Wiskers menu... I vote to leave the layout on the top bar alone, and to leave those two packages getting installed so they are convenient to simply add back to

Hello Yousuf and others,

as Sean requested a *team* vote should be conducted on this, not a
community vote. This means everybody in the Xubuntu team [1] has a vote

Others are obviously free to voice their opinions and if they are well

Re: Removal of pidgin

2021-05-24 Thread Michael Lueck

Greetings,

I'm suggesting again that we remove Pidgin

Sadly +1 here.

I miss the days of desktop IM. It is annoying to me that I must grab for my
phone now to IM ping someone.

I am thankful,

Re: Question about reasons behind Thunderbird

2021-05-24 Thread Yousuf Philips
Hi Eric,

Regarding removal of all games, I wouldn't suggest it. My suggestion of how
to improve games was sent to the ML two weeks ago.

Hi,

I can't agree with you more.

Hi Team,

With the addition of HexChat in 20.04 as the primary chat app to support our
default support medium, I'm suggesting again that we remove Pidgin as part of
the research I did[1]. Pidgin's usefulness has dropped steadily over the years
since previous chat protocols like MSN, Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk are no
longer around or no longer supported and it takes up 35,730kb of installed
space. It also isn't bundled by any of the flavors or any Xfce distro other
than Manjaro.

Re: Question about reasons behind Thunderbird

2021-05-22 Thread Martin Sjöstrand
Nah, I did'nt mean to express my personal opinions, I was just curious
about why Thunderbird is the default email-client. And, ok, ofc I can
have a personal opinion about Thunderbird vs Evolution, but I'm not
questioning the fact that Xubuntu comes with Thunderbird. And I think I
kept myself within the boundries of XFCE/Xubuntu...

Re: Question about reasons behind Thunderbird

2021-05-22 Thread Zahid Rahman
As we are expressing opinions on personal preferences and I am impressed
with one too.

Ubuntu-mate, I came across it recently , is by far the best ubuntu desktop
compare to all the rest in many many ways including any fedora or mint or
any other *nix may have to offer.

It is noticeably fast even compare to gnome.
