Re: [Zappa-List] It Can't Happen Here..

2005-01-14 Thread Mark Darling

This is kind of funny to me; I've been asking fellow Zappa-heads on this
list whether they've read this book for quite a while, at least
occasionally. I can't tell if Frank read it. It's a great book and everybody
should read it, though. Then read Brave New World. And 1984. And
Manufacturing Consent. And finally, An Underground History of American
Education by John Taylor Gatto. That'll keep yer ass busy for a while! ;^)

Fwd: [Zappa-List] Recomendation

2005-01-14 Thread drfegg

Would you like Jazz Zappa, Guitar Zappa, Classical Zappa...?
Hot Rats, Drowning Witch, Chunga's Revenge, Apostrophe, Best Band You Never
Did Here, Sleep Dirt, Baby Snakes, Bongo Fury, Freak Out!...the list is
endless.
Personally I love all the above and more. I'm sure someone on the list
could put in the direction to some samples.
Best to avoid Orchestral Favorites, The Yellow Shark and ThingFish for
awhile :)
Welcome to the world of Frank!
Steve

2005-01-14 Thread SOFA

Thereis no easy answer to your question, Kim; FZ has over 65 released
titles, many of them multiple disk sets. There's a LOT of music to choose from
for this recommendation...
I could name a release or two, someone else could respond "no, try these",
and name another couple. It's almost easier to tell you what to avoid, yet there
would still be a response to the effect "no, you should GET that one".
Your situation is quite similar to "Hey, I just discovered bread; any
recommendation on which bread I should buy?" And I'm not being silly here; it's
really that complex.
Since you liked 'Cleveland', and possibly more, from "Does Humor...why not
get that one? Or have your friend copy it for you and then really give it a
critical listen. Then ask yourself, "why do I like this?" You have lots of
options: the guitar work, the compositional style, the social commentary, the
funny lyrics, the tightness of the band. Narrow down what you like the most and
we may be a little more help to you...
And if this all sounds like too much to do for a lousy FZ recording, go buy
"One Size Fits All". This is one recording that almost every Zappa fan rates
highly; it seems to please a lot of the reasons that we all for enjoying
FZ.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Re: [Zappa-List] Recomendation

2005-01-14 Thread Mark Darling

I'd suggest hitting another title from that period. Try You Can't Do That On
Stage Anymore Vol. 3; it's a double disc set, one of which is devoted
entirely to the 1984 touring band. The other disc is also very good and is
more varied, band-wise. One will be familiar, the other a nice sampler.

Oh Kim you poor thing, LOL!

Welcome to Zappa! I would recommend Lather (pronounced Leather - I
can't put the umlaut over the letter A in Lather). It's a 3 disc set
that really covers much of Zappa's territories - it's well rounded!

Best,
Tim
