Re: [Zappa-List] Re: Nappy's Fate?
Hello Mr (or is this the Mrs?) Skull, I apologize if my question appeared accusatory- I did not mean that at all. On most of the Zappa related groups I've gone to there are many questions asked in jest that appear to be serious (Does Humor belong in an Email group?) Sometimes a very esoteric reference will be made just to see what responses it will provoke. Again, I meant no insult but I was truly wondering if you were serious. Could someone post some additional info on this DVD? Such as, a tracklisting, maybe? Re: [Zappa-List] Re: Nappy's Fate?
Honestly, no. Truth is I've never conversed with any *serious* Zappa fans until this list. I've met many who really like him, have seen shows, own recorded material but that's it. If it ever was uttered in any of the recordings of live shows I've watched or heard, I missed it. Sincere question: In your years of Zappa fandom, you've never heard / read anyone refer to him by the diminutive Nappy (or Napi)? --Milhouse -- Start the year off right. Re: [Zappa-List] Re: Nappy's Fate?
I was just thinking about the Society Pages last night. Is it still being printed? I'm sure I picked it up somewhere online, if not here then maybe a.f.f-z - but you're right, I don't ever remember reading the term in either Motherpeople or Society Pages. Rest assured it's a fond diminutive. It does my heart good to see Ray White getting in there with a different mix of songs but at the same time it breaks my heart to think of Napoleon being treated unfairly (again). imho YMMV David See me on MySpace at: www.myspace.com/davidblanglois -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tue, 15 Jan 2008 9:12 pm Subject: Re: [Zappa-List] Re: Nappy's Fate? Re: [Zappa-List] Re: Nappy's Fate?
It's cool. No ffense taken. My response was not intended to be nasty, I just was trying to get across that I've lived my life in a bit of a bubble when it comes to Zappa. The only other person I know who is serious about Frank is my wife. Even the guy who turned me onto Frank in High School eventually got over him whatever in the hell that means. Yes, humor belongs in e-mail groups, like music. But without facial expressions, tove of voice and vcal inflection we tend to misinterpret each other Hello Mr (or is this the Mrs?) Hey, I've been a sworn Zappa fan for 35 years, and I hadn't heard the term Nappy 'till now, I only figured out from the context of the first two messages in the thread that it was Napolean Murphy Brock... I ordered tickets online months in advance, and traveled half way around the world to see the ZPZ show in Toronto, and I really was hoping and praying that Napolean would be the guest star, I certainly enjoyed Ray White immensely, and even shook his hand as he was heading off stage at the end, but if Napolean were there, it would have been more of a legendary experience for me -- Eli Marcus www.EliMarcus.com blog: http://elisblues.blogspot.com http://www.myspace.com/elisblues Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, And today? today is a gift, That's why we call it the present. Re: [Zappa-List] Re: Nappy's Fate?
For what it's worth, I never called Napoleon Nappy either and wouldn't be surprised if he smacked my condescending ass one for that, either. On the alleged thread of this I heard from backstage talk (so take it with a grain of salt) that there was always some tension in the ZFT camp since Napoleon would not agree to work exclusively for the Zappa Plays Zappa band. He was not about to turn down a gig with Project/Object or any other Zappa tribute outfit that was not authorized by the Zappa Family Trust. As I said, this was hearsay so take it as such, although it does make a certain amount of logic (if not sense). Ok, let's not get too Ridiculous here (another important R word.) Fans and even band members have used the affectionate diminutive Napi or Nappy for Napoleon Murphy Brock for a long time. I refer you to the first time and place I ever heard or saw it used, in A Definitive Tribute to Frank Zappa special magazine published by the Guitar Player magazine group circa spring 1994. This quote, from an interview with Peter Wolf, originally published in Keyboard Magazine in 1980. Q: Were there any particular weak points in the band when you were with Frank? Wolf: The one thing that was not very strong in our band was the vocal part. [Guitarist] Adrian Belew and [drummer] Terry Bozzio could sing some, but that was it. Tommy could sing some backup, but there was not one guy in the band who was a monster lead singer like Nappy [Brock] was. --Milhouse **Start the year off right.
