Re: [Zappa-List] Frank Zappa Miles Davis jazz-rock
Zav, These 6 albums were mainstays in my dad's rotation. Listening to Jazz at such an early age (I am 51), allowed me to open my mind to what music can be. It allowed me to be open to music, especially FRANK ZAPPA, while others my age were being raised on commercial radio... Thanks for the reminder... CS -- The MILES DAVIS QUINTET 1965-'68 (6CD box set) showcases some stunning jazz that is just beginning to show rock influences creeping in. Some of the original albums represented are E.S.P., MILES SMILES, SORCERER, NEFERTITI, MILES IN THE SKY, and FILLES DE KILIMANJARO. If you want to sample only one album from this period, I would recommend MILES IN THE SKY. On Sun, Aug 7, 2011 at 9:30 AM, zav_sto zav_...@yahoo.ca wrote: ** I really enjoy Zappa's jazz-rock music, especially HOT RATS (1969). I always used to read rave reviews about Miles Davis' jazz-rock album BITCHES BREW (1970), and once in a while IN A SILENT WAY (1969) was mentioned. I have never found much to like in either of these two albums, so I figured if these were the best Miles had to offer from the period when he switched to electric instruments, I decided to concentrate instead on his recordings with John Coltrane prior to 1956. Years later I still don't like BITCHES BREW and IN A SILENT WAY very much, but I recently discovered that Miles' music before and after BITCHES BREW blows that album out of the water (I don't know what the critics were thinking rating BITCHES BREW so highly). The MILES DAVIS QUINTET 1965-'68 (6CD box set) showcases some stunning jazz that is just beginning to show rock influences creeping in. Some of the original albums represented are E.S.P., MILES SMILES, SORCERER, NEFERTITI, MILES IN THE SKY, and FILLES DE KILIMANJARO. If you want to sample only one album from this period, I would recommend MILES IN THE SKY. After BITCHES BREW some great early fusion appears on THE COMPLETE JACK JOHNSON SESSIONS (5CD box set). The music was edited and spliced to create the albums of the day, something that Zappa had been doing for years, but it was entirely new for a jazz artist to be doing this at the time. Be forewarned; this box set has many alternate takes that are similar. The closest thing to HOT RATS from Miles Davis is maybe THE CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS (6CD box set). Each of the 6 discs is a different live set from across 4 days in December 1970. There is some overlap in the music, but if you listen to only one set at a time it is mind-blowing. There's a good interactive Davis discography at http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/miles_davis if anyone is interested. The fan reviews there are the reason I started checking out these box sets in the first place, after writing off BITCHES BREW years ago. -Bri

Re: [Zappa-List] VO 12-26-75
No problem on my end. I wrote that I included the info, in an effort to get others to do the same. Keep the info flowing with the discs. Now that I know exactly what to do, I think that I will pull something nice out of my collection and start another vine. This was one of the more difficult vines that I have done. But hey, it is for Frank Zappa, so we all adapt and do our best. Thanks for the insights, simple rules make life simple. Peace, Craig - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, December 02, 2007 7:33 AM Subject: Re: [Zappa-List] VO 12-26-75 I didn't intend to lay blame solely on your shoulders, Craig. This vine got convoluted early, before you hooked up, and got even worse with time - it was a group effort... Our little system is not the most efficient or effective, but it works when the rules are followed. At issue is tracking the vine - for active participants and would-be, or future, participants. In order to use the 'Search' feature at the main page to track a vine, there needs to be continuity in the process, or the thread gets waylaid. The most important thing is the subject line; a Vine's Subject should always begin with VO, followed by the title of the collection. Other info, like DVD or CD or FLAC, can appear in the subject line - at the end - as long as the Subject starts out properly. And that subject line needs to perpetuate unchanged; even a little difference like 12-26-75 vs. 12/26/75 will throw off the Vine's tractability. It's a tomato / tomahto thing: essentially meaningless to we mortals, it means a lot to the machine we use to convey our message... So do not feel it was your bad, Bro. In all likelihood, I could have caught the subtle change at the time, and corrected it - as I've done on numerous occasions, but (since I rarely participate in these things) moderating the daily activities of a group as large as ours is rather time consuming. Re: [Zappa-List] Re: VH1
cool, thanks !! - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2007 7:43 PM Subject: Re: [Zappa-List] Re: VH1 So I was wrong... I've seen neither, so I wouldn't know. Uhm, Milhouse was actually stating that a vine of officially released material shouldn't appear on the List - and he is quite right. If you want to contact plotch off-list and effect a trade, that is your business... There's more than one VH1? WTF? Do they call it VH1 too, or VH1-2? I've got to quit working so hard, and watch more television... Thanks, Craig - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2007 6:55 PM Subject: Re: [Zappa-List] Re: VH1 In a message dated 9/27/07 9:36:45 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Lastly, I have this on a DVD made for me by a friend, with some bonus videos tossed on. If anyone is interested in a copy, or to start a vine, send me an email, as I tried once before with one and had no response. I would think trading of officially released material would be sort of a no-no.. Welcome to the Zappa-List, Zappawench!
