Last night I wondered who had this position other than Arthur Barrow and Scott
Thunes.  It's been a while but I have read 6-8 or more Zappa-related books and
can't remember.  Was it that Frank always did it himself until the later years?
And at that time was it because he had so many other thigns going on or was it
due to his health problems?

Ok Bobby Martin did a great job with the more cartoonish vocals in Tinsel Town
Rebellion and Honey Don't You Want a Man Like Me? but other than that he has
that cheesy annoying 80's white blues vocals that belongs more in 1980's
American action figure commercials than in Zappa's music.  How could Zappa have
allowed him to sing songs live like Illinois Enema Bandit and Zombie Woof,
songs that Ray White or Ike Willis should have sang?!

Like many of you it is difficult to assemble a small list of greatest
Zappa songs.  Sometimes I can listen to Punky's Whips over and over;
not as much for the lyrics, but for its musical foundation.  Willie
the Pimp (HR) always is captivating, but I also thnk the same thing
about most live MOI stuff '68-'69, etc.)  that I'm lucky to listen to.
I have on several occasions made some non Zappa friends listen to
Son Of Mr. Green Genes (HR) telling them that that is the sinlge  tune
that could completely represent Frank if I had to choose only one.  So
that is my all time favorite Zappa song, but after I wake up tomorrow
I'm sure I'll kick myself for not chossing a different one.

 Marc,
Might you be able to provide a track-list for inquiring minds?

 Hey Steve,
It is worth the money spent.  If you like the Mark and Howard years,
you'll be thrilled beyond your wildest dreams.  If you were not a huge
fan of M H,then you'll become a convert.  I've had the discs on
continuous play almost all the time sivce I got my copy.

Has anyone heard the recent Halloween '71 release? Comments? Tracklist?

This List isn't dead, it just smells funny...
Your question as it wasn't, kinda puts you in a category. There seem to be 2
different campswith regard to the early recordings and their subsequent
remixes (and both can be quite rabid): those who prefer the former, and those
who prefer the latter.
I actually like (and own) both, and cannot say that I prefer one over the other.
I know, a chumps way out, but it's true.

Does anyone know why the early Mothers of Invention albums (the first 3) have
the bass and especially drums so low in the mix? I'm surprised these haven't
been re-mixed by Joe Travers and Dweezil. I like the later 1984 mix of We're
Only in it for the Money with Chad Wackerman on drums and Arthur Barrow on bass
because the drums and bass are more prominent in the mix and other aspects of
the songs seem to be remixed as well, enhancing the songs.
