Hi Andreas,

to do this. The new site has a clear message and looks good - not sure if
the Zope logo should be repeated three times on the front page (surely the
word mark should not be part of The World of Zope) and there are some
spelling issues dekade should normally be spelt with a c; Python can
either be capitalised or written in quotes but not both...

One thing that I think is missing on the resource page is a Products
overview - PyPI isn't really suitable for someone wanting to see whether
Zope (2) is suitable for them and despite what we now think about how to
extend Zope, the Products do provide off-the shelf solutions for many
situations; something that as developers we easily overlook. Something
like the Plone directory, probably implemented as part of zope2.zope.org,
but visible in the resources section. I suspect this means some kind of QS
is required as only too many Products will no longer work with current
versions of Zope and the onus must be with the Product author or
maintainer.

That's not really Products but full applications, like Plone and
ERP5 etc. It might be an idea to have a listing for that, but that's
not really to determine if Zope is suitable, but to brag of the nice
solutions built with Zope. :-)

Right. However I'm not convinced this is something you can
agree/disagree on. Zope 2 exists. Zope 3 does not (it was split apart
and renamed). As such, I don't see a problem with referring to it (Zope
 2) by name (it's not Voldemort, after all). Someday it will die; but
that day is not today. And until that day comes (or it gets renamed,
heaven forbid) I would strive for clear and consistent branding (and in
this case, I think I would also try to make it clear that Zope 2 is
 legacy software).

Zope 2 was never a brand. It only existed to have a name for the older
application server when Zope 3 existed. It led to confusion and still
does. The name must go away. It is now the only application server with
the Zope name left, and that's a simple, clear and consistent brand.
We can help make the Zope 2 name go away by stopping its use on
official community sites like the new zope.org.

That's a good point. And I didn't mean to suggest Zope2 itself was a
brand, just that the Zope brand could be improved by clarifying its
offerings.

Anyway, I can probably live with Zope being synonymous for Zope 2
application server (like regebro says, it is the status quo.)

In which case, the brand becomes synonymous with its most famous offering.

Very nice work.

I would just like to give a small suggestion, which is to have 301
HTTP redirects from some non conflicting URL spaces on www.zope.org to
old.zope.org, so that we don't lose search engine indexing and ranking
of the old pages. Ex: the members area:

www.zope.org/Members/itamar/CorruptedZODB -
old.zope.org/Members/itamar/CorruptedZODB

This should be very easy to achieve with a small number of Redirect
Apache directives specifying permanent redirections.

Cheers,

Leo

The basic idea behind the project is:

  - a minimalistic www.zope.org site giving a short
overview about what Zope is - including all
related app servers, CMSes, frameworks etc.
which links to the related project sites (micro-site
   approach)

  - no more member contents on www.zope.org

  - the current www.zope.org will be stripped down
to the current member contents and stuff that
has to be preserved. www.zope.org will be
   renamed to old.zope.org later

Constructive criticism and feedback is welcome _now_.

I hope that we can fix the outstanding issues and integrate
further feedback over the next few week in order to roll
out the new site in the first half of June (2011 of course).

Looks great, well done all! Thanks for putting in the effort. My one
(very minor) nit would be that we try to over-emphasize and over-clarify
what Zope is (and is not), anywhere and everywhere possible.

 And by that, I mean:

 - Zope is: a brand, a term for any Zope-related technology, a general
term. It no longer refers to anything specific. It is all-encompassing.

 - Zope 2 is the original web application server.

 - Bluebream is the former-Zope 3 web application server.

 - ZTK is a set of re-usable libraries.

 And so on.

 Alex

Hi there,

Application servers has Zope BlueBream.

Then Grok's at the bottom under 'Frameworks' together with CMF, Repoze,
ZCA, ZTK and ZPT.

Grok is most like BlueBream and should be in a category with BlueBream.
If Grok's a framework so's BlueBream.

I'd call 'Application servers', which is mostly a term from Java land,
web frameworks instead, because that's what Python developers will
understand, and put Zope, BlueBream and Grok under it. If it sorts
alphabetically (frameworks seems to do so) and Grok comes first, I don't
mind. :)

Just think about whether Zope stuff is more like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_server

or more like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_framework

The Frameworks entry seems like a total grab bag to me (I didn't know
where to put this), which is why I wouldn't want Grok presented that
way. But you'd need to split up 'Frameworks' really.

ZCA and ZPT can be successfully presented as libraries (framework-style
libraries perhaps, but they're just libraries you can install and use),
and ZTK is a collection of libraries (which in fact contains the former
two libraries).

I'd say make a new heading:

Zope Toolkit

Put under it:

* ZCA

* ZPT

* other Zope toolkit libraries

So we're highlighting two important libraries and say we have a lot
more, managed within the ZTK.

You can put CMF and Repoze under Frameworks if you wish.

But a question: do we really want to present CMF as a current framework
that people can use to start projects on? If not, and it's legacy only,
should we really present it as an entry point? I'm not sure where Repoze
would go in all this though.

Martijn

Hi there,

dekade - decade:

And just talk about 'Zope community has grown' instead of starting with
Zope Corp. and the Zope community, which I think gives the impression
the community is some kind of appendage to Zope corp, the driving force
behind it all. While this was true 10 years ago, it isn't today. And
Zope corp is a part of the Zope community, right? And we're not talking
about Zope corp specific products either, so that could lead to
confusion the other way: somebody might call Zope corp about Plone.

This would be a place to site pyramid http://pylonsproject.org/ (for its

We prefer to be in related as our future will use only some parts of
grok / ztk

http://dolmen-project.org/ Dolmen is a web framework based upon some
parts of grok and ztk. It targets advanced developers building custom

The server does not seem to currently be gzipping the content this makes the
page FAR larger then it should be. This is usually a trivial change on most
webservers.

Many of the resources like the javascript look like they have a unique key, if
that is the case the expiration time and the cache-control maxage should be
set WAY out in the future. When set far out in the future the browser will not
even make a connection to see if the content has changed.

If possible the images used in the css at least should also get some kind of
versioned urls so they can also be cached indefinitely and just change the
urls when the data changes.

The page would also be faster and lower load if some of those stylesheets
could be combined.

You can get this information using yslow for firefox.

Mostly I just want the site to run faster for new and returning users since
the old site can be pretty slow at times and most of the changes should be
fairly minor.

Yup. That or just Zope. That is what people mean when they say Zope anyway.

I don't think they know what they mean :-)

Zope 2 was never a brand. It only existed to have a name for the older
application server when Zope 3 existed. It led to confusion and still
does. The name must go away. It is now the only application server with
the Zope name left, and that's a simple, clear and consistent brand.
We can help make the Zope 2 name go away by stopping its use on
official community sites like the new zope.org.

[Zope-dev] beta.zope.org (www.zope.org relaunch project)

Hi there,

I am happy to announce that we have made progress
with the zope.org relaunch project. The first public
version of the new site is now available under

http://beta.zope.org

And so on.
