RE: Anyone used Twilio SMS?

2020-04-15 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> I'm looking for some feedback and any code you are willing to share.

Twilio SMS is really easy, and their docs are pretty clear.

1 - Set up and account with them
2 - Setup a URL http://api.clickatell.com/http/sendmsg?user=
= _id=
==
3 - To send the text sent the URL to HTTP get

Example Code:
$lResult:=0
$tResponse:=""
$tURI:=" http://api.clickatell.com/http/sendmsg?user=
= _id=
=="
$lResult:= HTTP get($tURI;$tResponse)

RE: SOAP Secure Both Ways?

2020-04-01 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> Does the customer’s internally hosted 4D app also need to be configured with
> a SSL certificate in order to exchange data over SOAP securely?

It depends on the data flow...

The machine serving the data needs SSL, the machine connecting and retrieving
the data needs to use the secure port.

So if both machines are being servers for some requests and both are clients
for others they both need SSL. Does that make sense? Only the machine accepting
connections needs the certs.

I just created a sample using 4D v18... a one form button with the following
code in the button:

For ($i;1;1000)
  IDLE
End for
ALERT("Hello")

Run the form click the button multiple times before the alert comes up... I
only get one alert.

Try this simple test in your database and let us know what the result is.

... As was said before a load balancer... it is a device that is put in front
of a pool of machines. It balances the load between applications:

https://www.f5.com/services/resources/glossary/load-balancer

1 - There are many different types and prices for load balancers
2 - They work with 4D by same as other web servers, they route requests between
servers... each 4D client would be a pool member.
3 - Yes
4 - Not really much more to say... load balancers can be configured in a round
robin type setup or keep persistence for a user so they follow the same path.

This actually also works for RELATE MANY SELECTION

For example if you have [Company] table and [Employee] table if the one to many
link from company to employee is named "employees"... then you can do the
following:

$employeeES:=ds.Company.all().employees

$employeeES will be an entity selection of all employees that have a company
record.

Justin,

I just ran a couple of tests of this issue in a new structure (4D v17r5,
Windows 10). I cannot reproduce the results you are seeing

Test 1:

Table_1 -> Table_2 not using primary keys at all
ORDA query Table_1 on other key follow relation to Table_2 (again that
doesn't go to primarykey)
Success

Test 2:

Table_1 -> Table_2 not using primary keys at all
ORDA query Table_2 on other key follow relation to Table_1 (again that
doesn't go to primarykey)
Success

If you have a physical machine with 32 cores and your VM run 8 shared with 4
other VMs running 8 cores, then you may really get 8 cores. If you run 32 VMs
all wanting 8 virtual, then of course you are not getting it. I think the point
was that virtual cores do not always mean physical cores. It will depend on the
number of physical resources allocated to the VM.

Some more clarification may be needed... I'm assuming from what you said the

the list box a query should change based on the current selection. I think your

Call form is one of those commands that might be better if named differently. I
think it should be Call Window...

Anyway, the Call form should only execute the method you pass in, it shouldn't
change the window layering. To see if it is the call form or something in your
code call an empty method or something with a beep only. See if you still see
the called window coming forward. If you do, this is a good candidate for a bug
to report to 4D, if not then it is something in the method you are executing
that is changing the form order.

Thanks Tim,

Is this new with 4D v17?

I see in the v17 docs it is documented that new process can run preemptive...

2019-01-30 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> If all that happens, that process will be scalable across cores.

Did I miss something?

I thought for a process to work on a separate core it needed to be a WORKER
process and preemptive capable. So if you call new process it will not be
preemptive. If you call worker it can be preemptive if the code is preemptive.
I was also under the assumption is that each worker process does not use
multiple cores, but a worker process can use a different core from other worker
processes

Am I wrong?

This is a possibility, but if the structures are the same, the re-index is

Try this:

1 - Run a backup of the data it will save you time launching the new data if
you add the 4Dindx to the backup
http://docs.4d.com/4Dv16/4D/16/Maintenance-Page.300-3047557.en.html
2 - Copy the backup to your PC
3 - Launch 4D or 4D Server on your PC and run File:Restore..., select the
backup that you copied, it will uncompressed the backed up files for your use.

It is best to either close the application and make a copy... or back it up and
take a backup. When you copy it while it is running, more times than not it
will be corrupted. Sometimes corruption will be OK depending on your use for
the copy, but don't rely on it for a valid backup unless you use a backup or a
copy when the database was not running.

I just noticed you use send record instead of save record, that should work too
as long as you have an open channel using Set Channel.

RE: Delay process bug

2018-06-12 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
I also did some digging our servers are patched on a monthly bases and
restarted. So usually restart is few days over the 24.74 days. We have only had
one instance of the delay process bug. So most of the time, even if it is a 32
bit signed integer problem, we don't have an issue with the delay process
except the one time.

Be sure to submit a bug with 4D when this happens. I submitted one and they
said if it isn't reproducible they "can't" fix it. If there is enough
complaining about it, I hope they would spend time digging into it and realize
it is a problem even if it can't be reproduced on demand.

RE: Pointer to field using field name

2018-05-17 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
To get a field pointer to a field from the field name you can loop through the
table incrementing the field number until you find the correct name and return
a pointer to it, this is very fast since it is all in memory.

For ($i;1;Get last field number($TableNumber))
If (Is field number valid($TableNumber;$i))
If (Field name($TableNumber;$i)=$TestFieldName)
$PointerToField:=Field($TableNumber;$i)
$i:=Get last field number
End if
End if
End for

If you use this a lot you can use a cache array to store the pointers and field
names, but like I said this runs very fast.

RE: EC2 server on Amazon AWS

2018-05-11 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech

I have set one up and it does work. Make sure your virtual machine firewall has
TCP/UDB 19812, 19813, 19814 open. If that doesn't work let me know. I remember
also working with the AWS access manager... but I don't remember it stopping a
4D connection. I do remember that the windows server in AWS defaults a firewall
on with no access for a 4D client.

RE: Interaction with Microsoft Web Service

I don't use 4D SOAP very often... but I have always been able to get it work
even if I had to go to a low level. I totally agree it is difficult to
understand and way over complicated. In more recent years I have found that
many services that I want to communicate with offer alternative service types,
such as REST like services with a secure login. I use those instead of SOAP
every chance I get.

I think that it is cool you put together a component for this.

RE: Normalization question

2017-11-08 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
My number three choice that would work in an output form would be this:

> [Employees]ID  <——— [Projects]PrincipleEmployeeID
><——— [Projects]ProjectMangeEmplyeerID
><——— [Projects]SupervisorEmployeeID

Your list form would consist of two or three variables housing the employee name
In the form on load event, create an array cache of ID and Names
In the form on display code fill in the variables on the form

My number two choice would be to model the tables as below

> [Project]<--[ProjectEmployeeType]-->   [Employee]

You could use the same variable/cache approach in the output form with this
table structure, however it is a bit more complex to pull in the data during
the on load. However the table structure is a more flexible design.

My number one choice is instead of an output form use a listbox, you could use
a single SQL query with multiple joins to the same table to pull in the data
(no cache and on display).

RE: 64-bit Client Server on Windows question

The 64 bit client doesn't support quick time. You need to update your images to
a supported format. JPR has a great utility component that will find invalid
pictures and help in the conversion.

RE: 4D v16.2 false record locks

2017-10-05 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> Now in the context of this thread, this appears to be an anomaly?

Not an anomaly.

I have found the same great service, even with a tough bug... we had a problem
with web packets not being delivered. We had wireshark captures and web logs
showing the problem but could not reproduce it outside of our environment.

I submitted the issue with 4D, the worked with me and within a few days had a
system on their end to be able to reproduce the problem and reported it as a
bug. I'm expecting the 16.3 to have the fix.

Other bugs I have submitted have also been fixed in a timely manner and I was
kept in the loop the entire process.

I think they are doing a great job.

RE: 4D v16.2 false record locks

2017-10-03 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> I'm with John on this one. The payoff for sending in bug reports and feature

> *No matter what hoops are jumped.*

I have a different experience, I have reported a few bugs.

The ones that I have submitted that are reproducible I include a small database
demonstrating them. The bug is filed, I get email notifications as it is
updated and accepted, then I get an email telling me it is in one of the
nightly builds and I can test it.

The one that I reported that I could not reproduce, I had constant emails
between me and tech support until they actually figured out how to reproduce it
then sent it on to the engineers.

I have never felt ignored or neglected. I think they do a great job with bugs
that I have reported.

2017-09-28 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech

In 4D this could be simplified to

3+4*5^2/6-3*(1+2) // but with the compiler bug is real then it would be
(3+4*5)^2/6-3*(1+2)   // this one

4D only has 2 rules of precedence () first then left to right. I didn't know
about the compiler bug. I guess I don't use powers a lot in database
applications. Either way in my opinion this is much easier to learn than C++
for example that has 16 levels of precedence.

4D and Git Connection

2017-08-22 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
I recall that someone has worked with Git as a 4D code repository but I don't

I'm looking to automatically check out and check in 4D methods to Git as they
are modified via a 4D client. To give you the full picture we want to use TFS
and single sign on to connect to TFS which can be setup as a Git repository.
The Git repository in TFS will store any changes our team makes to the 4D
server's code. Has anyone done this or can anyone point me in the right
direction?

Preventing Duplicate Data WAS UUID vs Longint primary key

2017-08-07 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> How do you deal with that problem (Preventing duplicate data)

When unique data is required because of a business need, I do implement one of
your suggested methods: "Carefully program your system to detect and prevent
duplicate rows."

I would suggest not doing this in a trigger, but instead on data entry
(imports, user entry). The 4D command "Find in Field" works in many of these
cases.

Not considered a good random number generator when you are looking for random
numbers.

Add in milliseconds or seed it by looking for a random number (from millisecond

I usually use something like this Random+Abs(Milliseconds) and they seem random
enough.

RE: 4D and Exchange Server with IMAP [RESOLVED]

2017-06-20 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> If you are using domain\user then make sure to escape the \ like this:

I was using the format correctly...

To test what was going on I used telnet session went like this:

telnet server 143
> *ready message
A1 LOGIN "domain\\user" "password"
> A1 NO LOGIN failed

So I did some more investigation. The test server they gave me was on a
different domain. Once I got the domain and user added to the exchange server
the IMAP_Login worked perfectly.

As someone pointed out earlier if the username and password are correct it
should work :)

I attribute my trouble to this to an error message not related to the actual
problem.

In short IMAP_Login works with SSL/TLS or plain (ports 993 or 143) just fine
when the user is setup correctly.

RE: 4D and Exchange Server with IMAP

2017-06-19 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> Which port are you connecting to? SSL? Is it set using IT_SetPort?

I don't specify the port with IT_SetPort, I let IMAP_Login pick the port
depending on the SSL flag. I have confirmed that IMAP_Login is using port 143
for clear connection and 993 for SSL/TLS connections.

When I test with TCP_Open("host";143;$id;0) I get a valid connection with the
welcome message
When I test with IMAP_Login("host";"username";"password";$id;0) I get a n error

I'm using the 4DIC that came with 4D v15. I'm assuming it is a newer version...
however I just tried with a password that has no special chars and it did not
change the behavior.

It seems the IMAP_Login doesn't work with MS Exchange.

Just because Apple doesn't have an XServer any more, if you want to stay
non-windows (or just Mac), Apple has some pretty impressive machines. The Mac
Pro is beefy enough to handle even demanding server loads (12 core 2.7 Xeon
processor, 64 GB ram, 1TB flash storage), the new iMac Pro (coming in December
has up to 18 cores, 128 GB memory 4T SSD, and a 4.5 Xeon processor)

Granted none of these are rack mountable and don't have things like dual power
supplies so they don't count as "servers" but the performance would rival some
of the best windows servers out there.

RE: Dynamic Process Variables???

You and I are the same in that so far the only use of dynamic variables I have
done is from forms and list boxes.

I'm reluctant to use get pointer to create a process array dynamically until it
is documented as being safe, however it does seem to work.

Dynamic Process Variables???

2017-06-06 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
I just created a new database and created a method with this code:

C_POINTER($pArray;$pLongInt)
$pArray:=Get pointer("Array")
ARRAY REAL($pArray->;1)
$pArray->{1}:=7
ALERT(String($pArray->{1}))

Compiled it, and it ran without error. How long have we been able to get a
pointer to an array that was never declared to the compiler and have it work?

If I use the following code compiled I get a runtime execution error as I
expected:

$pLongInt:=Get pointer("LongInt")
C_LONGINT($pLongInt->)
$pLongInt->:=8
ALERT(String($pLongInt->))

These are way different in other languages. C++ for example

A 4D "constant" is more like a compiler definition "#define" where the compiler
will substitute a name for a value
#define MAX_ARRAY_SIZE 20
// anywhere MAX_ARRAY_SIZE is in the code, the compiler will put in a 20

A constant in C++ is more like a variable that can't be modified, assigned once
at declaration and then never changes while in scope. For example
myMethod (const int myParam)
const tint myParam = 7;

A Static is more of a shared variable for example a static variable in a class
that is shared between instances of a classes with a single initialization,
each instance of the class access have access to the same variable

Concepts get more involved when you have static classes :)

 $span:=""+$text+""

I find this just as readable and easier to type, but the other way is just a

Upper/Lower with or without dashes, under the hood it is a 128 bit integer, the

Copy out of read only variable/field

false. However I have tried every combination but none seems to have the
desired effect.

I'm questioning if this is possible? Anyone?

If I had to take a guess, you are using the new network layer (as that is all
the 64 Bit Mac knows)

There are some differences in client and SQL connections as they connect to
different ports. However also keep in mind they are not changing the network
protocol but the implementation of the network protocol. Something like an SQL
connection shouldn't need to change based on what the server is speaking.

Agreed it would be a good topic for the World Tour

Warning: Date in C_Object Changes with Time Zone

2017-03-28 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
If you pack a date into an object in one time zone... for example execute on
server when your server is in a different time zone. Then you unpack the date
in a local time zone the date could be shifted.

I ran into this by packing a date on the server in central time OB SET
($object;"myDate";!2017-01-01!) then retrieving the date locally in mountain
time. The date came back !2016-12-31!

I'm thinking this is a bug so I reported it as such.

I thought most firewall routers will stop a DDos attack before it hits your 4D
server. Was this not the case for you or are you testing without a firewall?

RE: 4D Query error, Beware

2017-03-24 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
One thing I left out... be sure to index the date field.

-Original Message-

Subject: 4D Query error, Beware

I have filed a case with 4D. I'm posting this message to make programmers aware
of this issue. If you find that I'm mistaken, please let me know.

A Query within a transaction is returning incorrect results. To demonstrate
create a new database with one table, add a date field to the table named
"Date".
Create and execute a method with the code below:

$dDate:=Current date
START TRANSACTION
CREATE RECORD([Table_1])
[Table_1]Date:=$dDate
SAVE RECORD([Table_1])
QUERY([Table_1];[Table_1]Date<$dDate;*)
QUERY([Table_1]; & ;[Table_1]Date>Add to date($dDate;-1;0;0))
ALERT(String(Records in selection([Table_1]))+"\r\rSould be zero") CANCEL
TRANSACTION

The query should return zero records because the records date is = $dDate not <
$dDate. However the query shows 1 record found.

A bit of testing shows this problem exists in v15.3 as well as v16.0 (other
versions of 4D not tested) The query also seems to work if there is no
transaction. The query also seems to work if it is a single level query (just
date<$dDate results in zero records)

I tested only on windows 7 and windows server 2008 R2.

RE: Entry Field questions

2017-03-21 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech

You can either put a filter method on the on data changed event to strip them
out, or create an entry filter to remove them on input. I find both acceptable,
but I lean more towards the a cleans method that I can call everywhere.

Buy licenses for each user, you get 2 for free with a purchase of a 4D server,
you can use these as spares :)

RE: Virtualization - Yea or Nay

2017-02-27 Thread Dennis, Neil P. via 4D_Tech
> I would appreciate your thoughts, insights, and real-world experiences on

I'm running a v15 server with a VM Windows Server (2008 R2), SAN Disk (not
SSD), 64GB memory, Xeon processor. We have concurrent usage over 130 users (and
not an optimized application). All users are remote but connect with Citrix (4D
server sees the clients as local)

Application runs well but we are always looking to improve speed. I would say,
try out your configuration and see if it works.

Broken connections are network issues. Either with a firewall or a hardware
problem. I lost packet also points to a hardware problem.

RE: v12 - Drag n drop from desktop

2017-01-25 Thread Dennis, Neil
Use the pasteboard for drag and drop now, it is a good time to re-read the docs
since the commands have changed over time.

http://doc.4d.com/4Dv13/4D/13.6/Drag-and-Drop.201-2501710.en.html

Compatibility note: Since version 11 of 4D, it is recommended to manage drag
and drop operations, especially interprocess ones, using the On Begin Drag Over
event and the commands of the Pasteboard theme.
