[AFMUG] ePMP Upload 1-2Mbps

2016-08-27 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
Good morning geeks,

I have a sector with an ePMP running GPS, 75/25 ratio, FW 2.6.1

Recently the upload has gone to crap. The RX/TX on the remote links look
great.

Different RFs have been tested.

The downloads are consistent. The upload never exceeds 1-2Mbps.

This is on 20Mhz channel. Going to 40Mhz channel produces the same exact
result.

If I convert to FLEX mode, the upload does fall within range of the
download.

It is isolated to this sector only. Have you seen this problem before?

I agree with Gino. WE have used them in a 1-2 mile PTP config. Mainly to link
a small site up to a larger site.

The other thing that really impressed us was short 100ft shots to remote
buildings with trees getting -60s.

We've started using DC-1042 for all our tower cable as well, and I'm pretty

the jacket is also too big. Now, I'm looking at Cat6A connectors (that have a
staggered insert and a full shield). Next, I will need a new crimper that does
not crush the shield on the Cat6A connector.

Anyhow, it seems like a lot of work to use Cat6 where some ToughCable and basic
shielded RJ45 connectors might be functionally equivalent.

Should I be seriously considering Cat6? When did you decide Cat6 was worth it?

Guys,

Just be aware there is a known issue with 2.6.2 that can cause the radio to not
respond on the Ethernet side. It’s a known issue on Cambium’s site. It bit is
in the butt a couple times this week. We have found that its best to NOT but
DNS in AT ALL to be safe, as their description of the problem and “solution”
doesn’t necessarily match our experience. We had working DNS values in several
radios and they wouldn’t respond until we removed them.

I have been thinking about this as well. I believe that with four 12v
batteries you can pull off 24v and 48v and send up tower with 3 conductors
(common negative and separate hots) then all you need is a battery charger
at the bottom with the ability to charge / supply necessary current for
normal operations. This would prevent all the costs associated with
inverters etc and would be clean (no switch time when power fails). Our
solar sites run so much better than commercial power sites its amazing how
good clean power makes such a difference.

This should work right?

Take into account the 24-25dBm Tx power on a 2.4 FSK AP vs 22dBm on a 2.4 450

doesn't typically have a horrible pattern though. Except for vertical
beamwidth. Then you play with electronic downtilt models, etc. So it's probably
moot as far as Rx power levels go between the two.

We get OK penetration on the 2.4 450 sector we have up. Not so much the noise
at the tower as it is at the SMs. We're going to get rid of it eventually along
with all of the other 2.4 shit. It's a dead band just like 900 to us now.

14db) . Was able to hook up every single customer I has on the FSK to the 450
and some were near-LOS. The 450 in 2.4ghz actually has impressively decent
nLOS. I think its a lot better than the 3.65 for NLOS. ( I have used all the
450 frequency bands except 900)

If you thinking about going 450 in 2.4 and you already have FSK up on 2.4 and
nothing abmormal with your noise floor then do it. You'll love it. The 450 is
actually better because you can run 10-mhz channels to get around some of the
noise in 2.4 vs the FSK which was stuck at 20mhz

[AFMUG] KP 3.65/5 Ghz Sectors

2016-03-14 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
Good afternoon,

If you have deployed the KP Performance 3.65/5Ghz Dual Sectors, I am curious
how they are working for you.

Also, if you are, did you have to modify any part of the equipment for
proper mounting/installations?

To save tower space, I am considering deploying several but don't won't to
have performance problems.

[AFMUG] ePMP FW 2.61 - Link Test

2016-03-10 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
Hey guys,

Tossing this out to see if others are seeing it or not.

ALL our ePMP gear is now on FW 2.61.

The wireless link capacity testing between AP's and SM's in TDD mode seems
to be much less. (Maybe 20-50%)

It doesn't seem to have any bearing on the actual throughput. Speed tests
seem normal, but I plan on doing more tests.

Just something odd I noticed.

Re: [AFMUG] [WISPA Members] To Cambium With Love - Replace the bad ePMP units.

2016-01-21 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
or so. Assuming all of the radios on an injector are either
ePMP or the newer 450i's, using 56V into a SyncInjector is perfectly acceptable
and the ePMP's are rated up to 56V as well.

So the summary: Try a 48VDC voltage source instead of 24V and see what
happens.

[AFMUG] KPPA-3S5HV-90SS / J-Arms / Used 2.4 Canopy SM's / 5780 BH's

2015-12-09 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
Hey guys,

We have two brand new KP Performance antennas (KPPA-3S5HV-90SS).

I have opted not to use the 90's but stick with our 120 deployments.

These have not been deployed, but we did break the boxes down already and
recycled them. So, I need to come up with a box to ship them in safely.

We will repackage and ship to anyone needing them. I am willing to take a
small loss to get them out of the way.

While I am on the subject of recovering shelf space. ICI has:

30 J-Arm's / roof mounts brand new we would like to dump for $7 each plus
shipping.

50 Used Canopy 2.4 SM's with 13.4 firmware we would like to dump for $20
each plus shipping.

3 Used Canopy 5780BH50 Complete links with 13.4 firmware we would like to
dump for $250 per link plus shipping.

Tackle me off list if interested.

Tyson,
1. We are using Cambium stock 65* dualslant antennas.
2. Mix of routers. We have a BYOR (bring your own router) policy.
3. All AP's are sync'd with either CMM4 or CTM2.

Adam,
We will certainly focus more attention on those SM's that have poor modulation.
It wouldn't surprise me if the most active SM's are the ones stuck at 1x or 2x.

George,
We have not considered downgrading. Our entire network has been upgraded to
13.4. That over 500 SM's at this point. I'm a little nervous about downgrading.

The reality here is that upgrading a FSK sector to 450 gets us only a little
over double the capacity. FSK aggregates around 13mb/s and around 27mb/s
aggregate for the 450. This is quite disappointing. It appears that we must now
be very selective over what SM's can register. A nearly impossible task in our
situation. Use caution if you plan on ripping and replacing your old FSK. You
will not yield the kind of throughput you'd expect.

Re: [AFMUG] 450 frame utilization and performance issues

2015-11-06 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
Eric,

Thanks for bringing this up. We recently started deploying about 30 450 AP's.
Our testing in the field and with customers is producing the same EXACT problem
you just reported.

More importantly, we see this problem on AP's with low SM's to high SM ranges
(5-45). Same firmware.

Let's compare some notes:

1. What antennas are you using?
2. What routers / OS are you using?
3. What sync source are you using?

We see high frame uses even on the AP's with low SM's and great modulation
rates.
I can understand if a large number of SM's have low modulation it will eat up
frames, but the outcome is the same on low and high SM counts.

We have a few 450 AP's with 30-40 subscribers and have been getting several
slow speed complaints lately. I just chaulked it up to issues with the SM since
the AP rarely got over 20mb/s downlink. We upgraded to 13.4 recently so we
could watch our frame utilization. We started graphing it over night and as you
can see, we are hitting 100% for sustained periods of time. During that time
the AP is only doing approx. 23mb/s. This particular AP has 34 registered SM
and the majority show 6x and 4x with 4 or 5 SM's at 2x and 1x. The performance
is a major disappointment. Anyone else have similar experiences?

AP configuration: 20mhz channels, 2.5ms frame, 10 miles, 75% downlink,
3 contention slots.

In some cases (not all) just adding another AP and sector should resolve the

If those 1X and 2X downlink SMs are even moderately active, that really throws
a wrench into the sector performance. This is true on any PMP platform. We've
seen our fair share of it. We've moved a couple back to FSK which is something
I never, ever want to do, but it was unfortunately necessary.

[AFMUG] PPPoE Reconnection issues on certain Cloud Core OS versions?

2015-11-05 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
Hey guys (and gals),

I am going to toss this on the public realm. It's bugging me and can be a
support problem at times depending on the OS version.

We run PPPoE for our customers with CCR 1306 routers. (latest OS right now)

I have two issues that come up depending on what OS we load or don't load.
I am

1. Certain OS versions will not let PPPoE accounts auto reconnect when
the router is rebooted (the customer MUST power cycle router to reconnect).
Some versions will simply start dropping customers. Finally some versions
work great and the PPPoE sessions auto reconnect after a core router reboot.

2. The other issue we see sometimes, depending on OS version, is it
'seems' like the PPPoE customers are being throttled. The radio burst
settings look good and the AP load is kept down. Yet on certain versions
the PPPoE assigned speeds can suffer.

Does anyone else ever see this crap depending on the OS version. or is it a
hardware .. Or firmware issue that causes this? IDK.

Ray,

Just my two cents.

It seemed like two months from the RMA contact date until we got our
replacement 450 unit last time. That is a long time.

I have another bad 450 AP radio that we are submitting this week. IT sure
would be nice to have either advance replacement options or a faster turn
over time.

Re: [AFMUG] Spam:*****, Re: OT Campus Shootings

2015-10-10 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
I was raised around the farm and guns. I was taught how to use them properly.
In school, we actually had a class on gun safety and usage. (not required)
People are the problem and always will be. We try to be our own ‘gods’ but
that will never work. As Gino pointed out, human beings need to be
controlled. Laws are only rules or guidelines. A person with underlying issues
to begin with will not obey laws. Even if this country had no access to guns,
someone with a desire to cause harm will find a way. Drugs are illegal… how is
that working out?

Some of you may watch the documentary ‘drugs inc’. Chicago is a waste land of
gun violence right now. (mainly drug related) A recent interview on the show
struck me as one our biggest problems. Two young kids dealing on the streets
admitted they grew up without a ‘good’ parents. People on the streets are their
family and taught them how to survive. I won’t even get into the argument
here, but family values have been turned upside down for years and the trend is
up.

These two drug dealers statement echos the real issue here IMHO. (many will
disagree) Parenting is the #1 frontline defense against so many problems. If
you parent good, and are fully involved with your kids’ lives a positive
outcome should result.

The issue I see right now is bad parenting is growing exponentially. We are
seeing an increase of bad parents raising kids with problems. Those kids grow
up and do the same. They have kids and so forth. Some are lucky enough to
break the trend but most don’t.

To make matters worse, social media is a driving force behind so much opinion
and ideas. We are all so connected now that a person with underlying desires
to harm (not just gun related) can easily gain access to things he/she never
had before. This drives the problem even further.

Looking at this with a foreign view I can't understand this "gun love" in US.
It is not all about the criminals or idiots. Just look at the statistics for
accidents with weapons. The only way to save lifes is to be very restrictive.
If someone wants to shoot he can go to a shooting club and leave the weapon
there. It is not freedom to have a gun at home. It is silly esp. with kids
around.

You can't avoid killing with banning weapons but you can reduce it. If I need a
weapon I call for police or security.

Re: [AFMUG] [WISPA Members] Drones Inspections

2015-07-31 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Communications Inc
Again…

I spoke to the FAA field engineer in Indianapolis. He made this pretty clear
to me:

1. IF for commercial use (you get paid to do job X), you must have
Section 333 exemption and have a private license.

2. IF you are a WISP doing this for your own towers, you cannot get a
Section 333 exemption. You must have an assigned aircraft number to your drone
and have a private license. Your operation is consider normal flight operation
just like any other aircraft. You MUST stay below 200 ft. or notify of intent
to fly higher. (drones only)

3. IF you are flying for hobby, you can have at it up to x feet. (real
logical to me – not)

Next year the rules will all change. He said they hope to have some kind of
test in place that you take/pass and your good.

I don’t really like this idea but it’s not my call.

I thought the commercial use (for hire) was only authorized with a
commercially licensed pilot. Hobbyists have raised the question to the FAA,
but I didn't think there were any rulings. I would love to use a drone, but
I also don't want fines from the FAA, along with risking fines from the FCC.

I know Mark Radabaugh was telling me some about this. Maybe he can chime in
here.

Cambium.

Give me a break. You make us fill out an RMA form online which includes
data about the radio to begin with.

Then your support team calls to verify the problems.

Then the same support team sends a text document asking for the data again?

Please call somebody at UBNT to help you simplify the process online with
quick return processing. Ok?

We spent a LOT of time on those George… we nailed many of them cold in 13.4.
Please let us know if you’re still seeing them (“watchdog reset” can mean lots
of things, there were a couple of cases that we couldn’t reproduce).

Regarding the “Adobe connecting to review server” thing… ignore it. That was
likely an oversight on our part. We use that server to allow multiple folks to
review and comment on the release notes (you know, for version control,
collaboration, etc.). We were rushing a bit to get the documentation over the
finish line this week before the holiday.

Alignment tone is there and working!

Let us know if you guys find anything else we should know about, this one was a
long time coming… but we’re proud of the finished product. Enjoy.

Happy 4th of July to all!

Combined firmware? You mean for 430 and 450? I guess so. But FSK is still a

Also, I don’t see anything in the release notes about SM alignment tone.
Didn’t this break from 13.2.1 to 13.3? To be fixed in 13.4? Or is my brain
just not working today. I thought it was 13.3 and all its progeny were dead to

The datasheet does list one as FCC and the other as International. C050900A011A

I can't find it many places.

The other way (PMP 450 AP to PMP 430 SMs) works, and is known as

Just want to point something out real quick...

A lot of people on this and other lists talk about JAB like they are some kind
of massive, rolling behemoth with a gazillion subscribers and trillions in the
bank. The kind of place that has it's own militarized security forces,
Ferrari's for interns, crispy creme every morning, and hands out Sam Adams
during lunch.

Okay, maybe not that extreme, but anyway...

To put things in perspective, if you were to talk to anybody who works at an
actually large ISP or Carrier for that matter, JAB is tiny.

JAB is literally the size, speaking purely by number of customers, that many
ISPs have in a few mile radius.

I understand that they cover a fairly large area, and that some manufacturers
in our industry will even bend the knee to get their business... And maybe
rightfully so...

But yeah, 250,000-350,000 sub's to many ISPs is a tiny drop in the bucket.

Weekly Rant
So I'm whiling away the hours programming EPMP radios and assembling Force
Dishes, and it occurred to me that this truly is 'Telco Grade equipment'.
After seeing what the Telco Guys use, and watching how they work, I can only
imagine that this equipment is specifically designed for use by people 'paid
by the hour', Probably at Union scale.

Well, I've programmed a radio, and assembled a dish, Time for a break
before I go to install it

I'm guessing there's some sort of regulation specifying how long it needs to
take to assemble equipment so that job's aren't done 'too quick' so it can
easily fill an entire day.

Josh,

UDP can do 100Mb easy (although I see these random drops in the UDP chart like
it dies for a second)

TCP barely hits 20Mb

I have tried flex and 75/25

I have tried auto on both Ethernet sides and locked to 100

Changed cable, ports etc.

I caught the end of Pai.

As O'Reilly said, they're skipping a bunch of stuff. Coverage isn't even 100%
yet and they're already screwing it up with red tape.

Holy hell, that speech and position of Ajit Pai is my definite opinion.

He’s my new hero.

Michael O’Rielly is also starting off strong against this Title II crap.

The strongest point I get from this is that the new law isn’t fully disclosed
but being passed regardless and pushes special interest.

I did not attend the show. However, I have spoken to others in attendance.

It's my understanding that the Telrad product is worth looking at. I was
also told the Venue was very nice.

What caught my attention though was several comments about the lack of
organization and support. This may not be a majority opinion but it came up
on several fronts.

I guess several vendors are a little upset and someone said the room blocks
aren't being charged right.

The word 'Drama' was also used. A reference was made about Trina.

With the loss of Rick, I feared this would happen. The board should just
apologize and put him back in place. I worry about Vegas this year.

I predict things will get very hot when board election time comes. Lots of
people will have lots of questions revolving around what happened at the end of
2014. The rug will be peeled back to see what was swept under.
