Well either you have click to close or no splash at all because topmost is not an option :P Unless of course you give the splash window borders - GIMP does this and it looks okayTom

About the splash, maybe you can take a look at this implementation :

Don't want to change opinions anymore (or do I want to ? ;)) but just
want you to know; This usability I told about has nothing to do with
interface design. It's about hte following:
When you have a splash screen hovering all other windows, a user is
forced to take a break from his/her work

You're right; at the moment I'm not on Linux but anyway I think this splash

if we do have a splash screen, make sure its one that you can hide by
clicking (maybe even have a little hide link on it) or that other
apps can go over, because splash screens that stay on top of
everything are FUCKING ANNOYING and I would hate for amsn to become
something people hate to run

Really, splashes are bad, are so '90s and I won't like to see amsn use
it. You better make your app show the main window as quick as possible
(maybe this can be finetuned a little more), as a feedback to the user
the app

that's not a bad idea at all; you may make the main window a splash...
With this I just mean all the thing a splash would do show an image,
display some text) would be done in the main window.
In practice that approximates

So these 5 (just a guess) values from the config pose the problem ? (X,
Y coordinate, width, height and language) I don't know how well this
solution blends, but yet another splash screen is bad IMHO. As we
already have
If that config parsing appers to be a problem, we can always move
the 'needed early' config like those positions into a special config
file which becomes loaded first. We can show the window then, and
proceed loading the rest of the config, and do whatever we need to.
So these 5

Or ... an earth spinning? :) Or something that will show the user that the
program is alive. I agree with the idea: as long as it's moving, it's
loading, alive, leave it alone, if there's an error print it underneath...
ok..
sorry I couldn't answer earlier...
first, Thanks Karel for sharing your ideas... and NWM/harry/vivia for this
