Hi Thomas,

A dbVersion value of 54 indicates that the database has been upgraded

I also see that there is alternating information about the ARServer  being
secondary serher AT least when it is validating FTS ports

If the database was a copy from another environment which was part of a
server group,  then perform the flowing steps


Remove the old arerror log and armonitor log  files  and restart the
arsystem services. If the reserves starts successfully the  perform the
following steps

Delete records from table servgrp_board and servgrp_resources

Change db version value to  what is currently on prevdbversion column and
remove the value from prevdbversion

On the AR config file, set multiple ar servers to false and server group
member to false. Also ensure that there are no references for secondary
server for any plugins or any features. Comment those lines out, if you
find any

Remove any files from the temp directory to have  clean set of install log
files

Ensure that the arsystem server licenses are valid and you are able to
create new records in any for that already have more than  2000 entries

 Also set the min and max values for private queues,  fast and list threads
to the current and recommended maximum value for your infrastructure

Now run the installer and let us know how it goes

Hi,

Check the record in control table from a db utility

Select * from control

The value in dbVersion column  should be 54 and if that's not the case, the
database has not been upgraded to 9.1.03.

If the AR Server binaries has been upgraded but not the database, t
It should given an error Bout column useShaH (or something similar). This
column is created only when the database has also been upgraded

Was the server part of  server group? If yes, can you please check if the
server was considered a secondary server and hence updates only the
binaries and not the database. This can be found on the
systeminstalledconfiguration.xml file

If you are running the server on Windows, check the productregistry.xml to
find the install and upgrade entries for product BMC Remedy action request
system server

I cannot open the log files as I am on my mobile right now. Are there any
glaring errors on arsystem install logs?

Bruce,

You can get the def files from the installer and import just them.

Also please check if the db procedures are created innthe arsystem
database. Just a verification step as you said that the form did not get
created and might have failed the db objects copy

Hi Mike,

If you are using inbound email messages for each of your ITSM application
module, you can make sure that the 'Reply-To' field is passed to the AR
System Email messages form. This will ensure though the display email id
might be your default emailaddress for your outbox configuration, if the
customer hits the reply button on the email, it will be sent to the
'Reply-To' address

AIE till v7.6.04 has the 2GB limit on data that can be transferred on a
exchange. IF you feel the number of records to be transferred exceeds this
2GB size limit  split it across multiple exchanges and use queries.

The best way would be to use the month() function in a variable editor,
calculate the month from a date/time field. Then use this on a bar graph and
you can find it sorted by month (as in the calendar)

Hi Brian,

You should check where the armonitor.conf file exists and also check that
the AR SERVER ID parameter on the arsystem script refers to the correct
path.  The AR Server ID should be the same as the physical host name of the
AR Server. This parameter is used to build the  path for the ARMonitor
ARMON_DIR and ARMON_CONF

You would need to check if the path that is referred to exists on your AR
Server

Also check if  the armonitor.conf file should has got the correct reference
to the AR Server Name and path for the arserverd

If the database was shared in a AR server group, a look at the records on
the table servergrp_ would reveal the servers that were part of the AR
Server Group.

You might even want to check with your DBA if the backup script inncludes
the control file of the database. This control file provides vital

Hi Listers,

I have multiple AR servers in a group and I need all these AR Servers along
with the server group name be updated in the MidTier AR Server settings.

When I add all three servers + the server group and I login to access the
applications, on the Home Page, I see all applications links appearing 4
times, once for each server.

How do i avoid this? I was told this has been discussed in the ARS List
earlier and I cant access the list from my work network.

We are running ARS 7.1 p6. Can someone point me in the right direction?

We are now set up a load balanced Mid-Tier and AR Server environment with
the Mid-Tier configured with the AR Server Group Name.

But there are admins who want to log onto the admin server in the server
group directly and when they check the CI Viewer, it comes up; with the
message that the server is not included in the list of servers. If I want to
get rid of this error message, the only option is to include the admin
server detail in the Mid-Tier config.

I have tried it with my customer and they still want to be able to log onto
a specific server.

The Administrators log on using the AR User tool and the CI Viewer uses the
mid-tier URL to refresh the CI relationships and since the default web-path
is updated in the Server Information and the AR Database is shared, I cannot
use a separate mid-tier instance for this. I still have to have the web-path
defaulted to the load balanced mid-tier and have the Admin server configured
in the mid-tier ar server configuration page.

BMC Analytics - BO XIR3 - Unable to modify CMS ipaddress

Hi All,

This is a query on the Business Objects server. I have installed the
application server BO XI R3 on a Sun SPARC server to be used with BMC
Analytics (this part is not installed yet.)

This solaris server is set up with multiple ip addresses and NIC. During the
install, the default hostname was selected for the CMS and I did not have an
option to modify this.

Now I have change this to a different ipaddress /nic so that i can satisfy
the security/firewall requirements.

How do i change this now? Where all should i change the hostname to the
ipaddress? Is there an utility available within BO that would help me do
this without having the difficulty of going to multiple config files and
changing the references for the host name

DATE field in AR System

Hi Listers,

All of us know that DATETIME fields in Remedy are stored in the backend as
integers; the value being the number of seconds from 1 Jan 1970.

 How is the DATE field stored in the database? It is stored as integer; but
I am not able to decrypt the value.

For example - a DATE value of 26 Nov 2008 when set to a integer field
produces a value of '2454797'.

When i set the same integer value to a DATETIME field i get the value as
29.01.1970 09:53:17 wherein assume that the value that should be 26-Nov-2008
00:00:00

Would someone know how do i convert the integer value for DATE field to a
normal date display?

We are running a ARS 7.1 p003 on MS SQL 2005.

Hi,

AIE is a powerfool tool with its own glitches.

If you want the column in the view to be displayed, you will have to run the
oracle or sql rule helper and load the views again and create the menu. You
can get more information on the AIE documents on how to run the rule
helpers. This is the way it should be done to reflect new fields on the AIE
mapping console. This creates the column into the form EIE:Vendor Field
Names.

When you have created the new field in form CTM:People, you would have
normally expected it to reflect the newly created fields; which AIE
unfortunately does not do it. You will have to create a new data mapping;
call it a dummy mapping and use the form on which you have created the new
field and add a dummy database view. When you create it and look at the
mapping console, under the form fields you can see the new field listed. and
now close this, delete this mapping and go back to your old/existing
mapping. You can see the new field listed there. Tshis is because the form
EIE:FieldNames has to be loaded with the new field that was created. and
this is the only way i can see how you can get to reflect the newly created
fields

Issues with AIE in getting the updated records from source database

Hi List,

I am on ARS 7.1.0 p003, AIE 7.1.0 p003 and CMDB 2.1.0 p3 on a SQL 2005
Database Server

AIE pulls data from SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 and updates the data into CMDB.
The initial Load went on fine without any issues. Picked up only the Server
data from SMS as per the configuration.

When i run the exchange after this initial load, it picks up all the data in
source as per the data query (only server data) and creates any new records
or updates all the records in CMDB; wherein it should update only those
records that have been modified in the source after the last update from SMS
to CMDB was done.

In the CI class mappings; I set the following options :

Update record only if checksum for mapped field has changed - YEs
Calculate and store checksum in 'tmpSMSCheckForUpdate'

Retrieve Source records - Only new or updated since last transfer
Last modified timestamp in source - 'TIMESTAMP' field from SMS.

This is the default setting that is recommended for updating existing CMDB
records which have been modified in the source. But when i run this exchange
and the DB Trace on; the query picks up all the records and not just the
modified records from last data load.

Is this the way it should be done or am i doing something wrong here? Is
this something you have encountered? What is the way around this?

Am also looking at an alternate solution where after the initial load of
data, I can update the External Data Query to filter the data and give me
only the updated records.

As David said, the installer for SMS2CMDB does not import data into all the
relevant forms and always errors out. Please use the manual provided with
the installers for the three fold installation:


   - You would have to start with importing the def files provided and then
   import the data manually.
   - And then run the CMDBDRIVER utility and the can be installed as it is
   stated in the install guide
   - SMSSYNC can be installed as it is stated in the install guide

Once the above steps are completed, you are ready to use the SMS2CMDB
Exchanges and Mappings from the AIE console; after configuring them to talk
to your SQL database.

 I have used it. I had issues getting the ariportcmd to work right (I kept
 getting mapping errors, I believe this was associated to the fact that I
 have 2 arservers on one physical machine) so I manually imported each arx
 file which did not take long.

 The only other gotcha I saw was that there seemed to be some case
 sensitivity in AIE when it came to the logins.

 I would however upgrade to Asset 7.1 if at all possible. We were told by
 BMC support that there would be some long term issues with upgrading if we

Data Type Mismatch Error on Importing data from CSV file to CMDB Classes

Dear Listers,





I am trying to import data from a csv file into the Computer system class in
CMDB 2.1.0 p002. In doing this when I run the data exchange, I get the
following errors. The csv file was created from a remedy application report
feature.



When I check the field type in the Computer System class and in the csv
file, they all are character fields.



When I run the exchange, AIE wrote the following error messages while trying
to import the data into CMDB. Even Date fields in the CSV are stored as
Character fields.



Any idea  why I get this error message and how should I overcome this
problem?

Attachments problem

Dear Listers,

We are trying to attach an excel file which has some macros written in it.

When i try to attach this file to an attachment field, it throws an error
BAD ATTACHMENT SIZE.

The file size is 1043 KM and am able to add a simple excel sheet with size
more than this.

Am trying to upgrade (non root installation)  one of my AR Servers from 6.3to
v7.01 and in stage 1 i face this issue. I have set all oracle env variables.


Upgrade filed while updating oldfieldlengths

Am on Solaris 10 with oracle 9.20  10g client.

Am not able to trace anything here and i had given even DBA privilege to the
oracle user aradmin

first time we are testing this feature and got this error.

Else Actions in Escalations

Dear Listers,

I have an escalation that fires every hour and checks for a particular
condition  on Form A.


The If Actions definted in the escalations are fired appropriately.

I have a couple of actions definied in the Else Actions tab and if the
Escalation Run If Condition fails the else ations are not fired.

Is this a known behaviour of escalations?

I can always right a second escalation whose run if condition will be
different from the one on the original escalation and define the actions on
the IF Actions tab itself. But I dont want to increase the number of
escalations as there are numeours other escalations running on this server.
Is there anyother way I can achieve this?

User Tool 6.x Crashes on one action

Dear Listers,

In one on of our applications, we open a display only form that has a table
field. There are multiple records that are displayed in this field and all
these records needs to be processed on click of a PROCESS ALL button.

Once the process is complete a successful message is displayed and  when i
click on the CLOSE button the user tool crashes.

But if i perform the same action using a v7.x user tool; the operation is
completed successfully.

There are no actions that are performed after the successful message is
displayed and when i check the log files (client / server) I could see no
reason why the user tool should crash.

Could someone help me with this?

Chris,

You can deploy your remedy tools / server on a citrix farm.

You need to have a citrix server that will reside in the same network as
your application server and all Remedy tools will be installed on this
citrix server. Access this server desktop via the citrix client and all
process will be sent between the client / server on the same network and it
reduces your network latency issues (citrix being a thin client)

Create fields dynamically and push the values to Diary field

Dear Listers,

I have a questionnaire form and have 15 types of customers and all of them access this application from the Mid-Tier. 

All these customers are grouped under a banner. When this questionnaire is opened a set of questions have to be displayed for these customer types and they vary a lot. 

The no of questions can vary ranging from 10 to 64 for a particular type and only a few of the questions are common. 

How do i handle this now ? Is there a way i can create fields dynamically at run time and populate these fields with the questions stored in a regular form along with the customer type. If yes, how do i do it?


Or is there any better way

Malloc failure on Import

Dear Listers, 
We installed ARS 6.3 (unpatched) and when we were able to successfully import 1300 forms into the server. When we actually try to import active links (150 at one time from a 150 MB ACTL .def file), we get this error :


Malloc Failed on Server (300)

Further to this, we applied p16 for the server and still face the same error. 

We are running the following set up : 

ARS 6.3 p 16
Solaris : 9
4 CPU
16GB RAM
500 GB harddisk
shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295

Please advice what needs to be done.

Server Thread Monitoring

Dear Listers,

Am running ARS 6.0.1 on Solaris 9/32-Bit with oracle 8i.

This AR server has multiple interfaces and also talks to various external databases through DB Links. 

Is there anyway i can have a real time monitoring of the threads configured and come up with details like the no of active threads, idle and dead threads?
