Re: The wheel of time and other fantasy books

@khomus, as regards WoT, I'd suggest starting with eye of the world and only reading new spring around book 5 or so. It's well worth reading, indeed it was reading new spring in the legends collection that first got my lady into the series, but it isn't the easiest place to start, plus Jordan was fairly good at introducing the world slowly. As I said in This article, the problem I find in formulaeic writing is predictability killing story tension. If you know  that a certain character is always safe because they are a main character, or that the good guys are going to get out of a situation because they're the good guys, then tension has gone out of the window. Eddings, even though he was writing very much in the standard good guys heroes journey mold, did have a very nice habit of having character who did not necessarily know they were going to get out of a given situation, so you could empathise with what they were feeling in that situation. while Even though conan basically is a massive succeedinator who wins at everything, Robert E Howard had a gift for language and poetry that shines through (Indeed I love several of his poems), though in Conan particularly, the rants about women needing to be submissive and obedient (along with the amount of slave girls), and about how white people are  unquestionably superior, do make me wince a lot, since the books are unquestionably preachy, and what they are preaching in places is an extremely repellent mindset, albeit one with a historical context (the books are nearly 100 years old after all). this is why, though I've read the odd individual conan story, I can't take too many of them at once, and much prefer to stick to Howard's poetry.Eddings tended to avoid as much preaching in his main series even if he did have certain assumptions about men and women that grate on occasion, though in certain of his prequal novels (especially Polgara the sorceress), the times when we're openly told about the big dumb brutish men being overseen by the strident cunning little women, it did get a bit urcsome. Then again with any author, modern ones included, I'd much rather read a good story than just get an opinion preached to me, and much rather have complex 3 dimensional characters than cardboard props for the author's opinions. As to Pern, well McCaffery is very hit and miss, when she's on she's on, when she's off she isn't. I'm doing a slow reread of her dragon riders series putting the reviews on fantasybookreview.co.uk. I tend to find ironically that those books which are character focused, like the harper hall trilogy, tend to be much more fun than those which try to be political stories, like the main series. McCaffery also  suffer rather badly from a kind of idealism found to a lesser extent in authors like Mercedes lackey, where you hear about someone doing something bad, the good guys get together, and the person doing the bad thing is just politically talked out of it before you actually see the bad thing happen, or likewise, on the rare occasions you see something bad happen to someone, well usually they go and tell the authorities who are unquestionably good, and someone puts a stop to it. it's actually sort of refreshing, MCCaffery has problems like mismanagement, abuse of power and bullying dealt with in the way that we would hope they could be dealt with in reality, rather than what actually happens . This unfortunately makes a lot of her books less than tense to read, and means she's generally better when dealing with individual character experiences, hence why the harper hall trilogy, which are basically just the story of one girl's attempts to be accepted as a musician in the heavily sexist hidebound medieval culture of pern, actually work far better than when she's trying to show political plots or power plays. As to the immortality question, mostly I've seen that occur in science fiction or urban fantasy rather than in epic WoT style fantasy myself, although it's a question even Tolkien deals with with the elves.

@Lupus: Have you not activated the game? Did you buy it then suddenly change your mind? You do realize that whether activated or not, you are going to have to contact the dev about this anyway to transfer the key over to the new email address of the recipient. There's no official trade policy for this game. So I'd be careful about posting these kinds of offerings on the forum unless you can make damn sure it's possible. I get you're inherently trying the more ethical route, but without an official method in place this might create more hassles for both you and your potential recipient.

Re: what do you guys regret

Regret is a weird thing. It goes hand in hand with sentimentality and the feeling of nostalgia. Our reality, at least for the time being, doesn't allow us to go back and fix the things we've done wrong. But should we necessarily regret them?Apart from an aid to self-reflection, regret doesn't really do a lot for us. It is possible to acknowledge a mistake without necessarily feeling regret over the choices that lead up to it. Another thing to consider is that all of our past experiences help to shape the decisions we've made thus far, and the ones we'll make in the future. We all make mistakes and we've all done bad things or at the very least, things we're not proud of. But is the feeling of regret a necessary tool to keep us from repeating a mistake, or can we simply use it as a tool to force ourselves to acknowledge what has happened, then distance that memory from our conscious mind?I'd say the one regret I have is probably the fire I started in my school. I don't really feel like typing that story out again, and it is here on this forum somewhere, so the curious can dig it up if they so wish. But really, do I have reason to regret it? I mean, if someone actually had gotten hurt, I would have. That didn't happen though. SO I don't really regret the act of starting the fire, but I do regret the way AI handled things afterward, because my actions did hurt people.I basically lied about the thing, denying it whole-heartedly. My parents raised hell at the school and knocked them down to 5 days ISS for possession of matches. I didn't understand the ramifications of what this meant at the time, but I started to as I got older.

I regret going to a stupid rock concert in Nam without earplugs. As cool as it was, I have to pay for it for the rest of my life. If I could redo that day I would not go, but there are no redos in life, so let my story be a cautionary tale for the rest of you kids. As far as regrets go, this is my only one..

Haven't heard of any games on either of these that peak my interest or that are accessible yet, so I personally would wait. Like assault I have found the bulk of playable games to be on ps4, but maybe I'm missing something on the other side. Sports, racing and fps don't really appeal to me as a gamer though.

Here's another question I feel is really dumb. How do you load guns? I bought the soft point machine gun. I have like 5500 soft point ammo. But it just clicks. I've also had this happen with things like the plasma machine gun which say they don't need ammo, I fire them, then they stop working, although maybe they're a one and done kind of weapon and you just need to buy more of them. But yeah, apparently I do not know how to use guns in BK3.

what do you guys regret

what do you guys regret

hay ya allso I was wondering this for a long time, because I am bored from the pandemic and all thatwhat do you guys regret doing in life. like, something that you really regret doing to someone, something, or to your selfhere is mineI really regret getting an iphone 4 s even when the iphone 8 was out, and even if I had the money to buy them. I don't know why I did it but I got an iphone 4s. that's right. I am a cheepskate. anyways, back to the topic. when I got that phone I didnt know it was stolen by someone and soled in a store near my home, yes that was a verys tupid stupid idea, I got the phone, put my sim card inside it but the phone keeps saying sim card not instaled. when I try again it worked, but with unexpected results. firs of all, the damm thing was broken. why? because when I call someone it keeps cutting out or starts playing a very loud noise, similer to a motorcycle. I don't really know how to explain it, I was like 11 at that time, so I thought the phone was broken so I said fuck it and just left it charging and gone out side to do some running. when I kame back, the phone was gone and the damm charger blew up. litteryly blew up. there were wires everywhere and my house smelled like burned leather. also the phone was there but some of it was still pluged into the charger so the thing where you insert the charger in was broken and also my simcard was dammaged. I know this because it was shatterdd and some of it were falling out of the phone, you know it blew up. I called my father into the room cause he was an electrition. when he checked the phone the thing was so dammaged that I dout it would work ever again. so I just threw it into the trash and the next morning I when out to discard the trash in some place because there were no landfills or anything near my home so I just dumped it in a random place. when the phone fell out I decided to examin it a bit more. so I just smashed onto the ground and some metal thing kame out of the phone, I checked it and thought it was the battery or something but it was actualy a teeth of a haircoem. when I checked that it was near the charging area and I thought it mite have dammaged the battery. I was so fucking mad because my damm simcard costed like 350 dollars, yep it's a speshle number. I reported the store who had soled me this phone to the police and unluckyly I could get the store the close down because it had a great reputation in it's past. so the only conclusion I kame up with is that someone try to rig my phone to get revenge on me or something but I don't remember any enemys of mine at that time. hat's what I really regret. buying that stupid fucking phone. and maybe that metal thing was making the damm noise when I ccalled someone two. sorry for the wrong spelling, i am not a naytive speaker of english soshair your storys, I will be intrested in them

Hey guys, bringing this thread  back because pokemon crystal clear just got updated to version 2.1, which adds and fixes a bunch of things. I'm not going to link the game for obvious reasons. I have had a lookes at the change Log and probably the biggest change is the ability to choose your starting town as well as region. You can even move your home later on as well as find new locations for it not immediately available at the start. Besides that, there are a ton of new additions like music, sidequests, too many for my poor finger to tap out on this touch screen.A couple things worth noting: the character editor when starting a new game is a pain in the rear but if you can figure that out then the rest is pretty straight forward. Also, footstep sounds are broken again so its not 2984 anymore unless I had it wrong to start with. If anyone can figure what to change the footstep ram number to, please share. You can still use the camera and path finder though, and everything else should be as it was. Finally, you can still use your save from the old version, just save inside olivine pokemon center, then switch out the old game with the latest version, then go outside and talk to the sign for confirmation. A beep means success, and if your warped back inside then it means the game needs to be update. I just started over but still have my old save.

They didn't need to be said as in you guys should have been on the ball with shit and not basically fireballed the game into oblivion. We shouldn't have needed to tell you how to manage your project because you should have had the vision to handle things yourself. When it got shut down, that was the best thing for it and it never should have been brought back. One reckless decision after another. So when I say that we shouldn't have had to say things, it doesn't mean that literally, it means it in the sense that I shouldn't have to tell a cardio-thoracic surgeon how to perform a Thoracotomy.

@183, at least, we hope they're temporary measures. I'm sorry, but skeptic as I am, it wouldn't surprise me if the government, at least in Canada, finds some way to justify extending these measures longer and longer in the name of safety. That's dangerous to me, unless someone can show me some sort of other reasonable conclusion that shows they are indeed temporary. I'm no conspiracy theorist or in a more radical camp, but I'm not wiling to just take things at face values either, especially hen they are restrictive measures like this. Maybe it's the Taiwanese upbringing... all too many times people set measures in Asia that are for the so-called greater good, which turn into examples like the way China currently is now. I'm sure noone there would say those measures are unfair, either. It's for the benefit of everyone, after all, and the higher ups know what's best and as long as you draw inside the lines, you won't be disturbed. Or maybe I read too much Asian history.

I just don't get it.He's less than intelligent, believes he alone is right, is absolutely certain that admiting being wrong is the worst kind of defeat... I wish I were president if only so I could address all the wrongs this country has to move on to all the rights it truly needs... I will never be president, btw.  Don't worry your head about it.

I can't quite remember it, but I remember it being close to this. It also has a barrel of plug ins, such as PM notification, the ability to ignore the posts of players, automatic warning system, forum birthdays, a live chatroom, the ability to tweet your posts, etc. I think I'll be running a fresh install of it after dinner just to see what's new and to report back on some stuff.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

Taiwan and Sweden are definitely examples of how to handle Covid-19 properly. I believe South Korea also falls into this. But then, I'm also the sort of person that thinks personal liberty is just a little bit overrated. Yes, it's a lovely thing, and I want everyone to have it as often as it's reasonable to have it. But if the greater good is truly (like with empirical data here) served by a lockdown, I don't see a problem with restrictions. For instance, I believe we had a temporary measure put into place for awhile where if your gathering was big enough, you could get fined; I am totally, 100% okay with this, though only during the crisis for which it was mandated. Sometimes I think people have this idea of freedom above all else, at all times, for any reason, and I'm just not okay with that. If you're using that rhetoric to justify reckless action, then as far as I'm concerned, you are part of the problem, and if you get fined or reprimanded or something, then you deserve whatever you get. I think sometimes, liberties need to take a backseat to actual survival; freedom means nothing if you're sick or dead. Besides, in the case of lockdowns and things, we aren't talking about permanent removal of rights. We're talking about temporary restrictions...a pain in the ass, to be sure, but done out of a desire to cope with a situation we otherwise can't handle.Oh, on a less Covid and more Trump-related note, it's becoming clear that Trump is doing everything he can to fudge the election, and his legal team is actually setting up to contest or overthrow it if he loses by a narrow margin. I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to call a country "the most free country in the world" when its chosen leader (note how I didn't say elected, because he lost the popular vote) is doing everything he can to spit in the face of democracy.

I agree with everything leading up to fore renaming them as user9-25-2020-10-19, as that just doens't bode well for brevity. THat could, however, work as a good temporary olution while we look up the characters, have them read out by a synthesizer in that language (Espeak comes in handy for this) and then replace the username to one that uses phonetic spelling. That way, it's as close to their original username as it gets, while being fully readable. Fair on both the user in question and on the rest of the folks on the forum.

You should be able to fix it. Try this,On your punctuation group, press add, then, in the punctuation field, go to numbers, and put in a quote, voiceover should say double open quotationark. On the rules, press ignore. Go back to the previous screen and press add again. This time, in the punctuation field, go once again to numbers and quotation mark, but put two quotationmarks next to each other, without any spaces. You should hear voiceover say, doubleopen quotationmark, for the first one, and, doubleclosing quotationmark for the second one. Now, switch your rotor to characters, and put the curser after  the doubleopening quotationark, and press delete. If you go by character, you should only see the doubleclosing quotationmark in the punctuation field. Once again, hit ignore in the rules, and go backt to the previous screen.Your done. If your having the same problem with single quotationarks, do the same steps as above, but with apostrophe as the punctuation sign.

Re: Blind Quest 2 - The Frost Demon Now Available

Playing the demo. Here are my findings.obviouspotentialspoilersbeyond1. The voice-acting is way too slow and deliberate. It's not a universe-changing great big deal when Nathan finds a healing potion. Also, when I hear something like "Nathan gained experience: one. hundred. twenty. five"...that's kind of annoying. Also, there absolutely must be an interrupt key when you're hearing a description. This makes exploration really, really tedious.2. I noticed that the Green Hill map wasn't present at first, but just randomly appeared after I went somewhere else, and I have no idea why.3. Combat appears to be extremely simplistic. Hear attack, dodge in opposite direction, snap an up-arrow, repeat till foe is dead.4. Story isn't terrible, though I'm h aving trouble making sense of exactly what the hell I'm supposed to even be doing right now. I found a dude who needs a fire lit, and I have a log, some wood and kindling, but apparently that's...not enough to light a fire. There are stones everywhere, snow piles, corpses, ice, and no way to actually do anything with most of them. Did get a nice gold stash from an iron box, and did kill an undead knight. I also found a flower, but when I looked at it, the petal I was touching crumbled. I really hope this isn't one of those games which wants you to explore and will then punish you for doing so.Overall, this might be worth five or ten bucks, but I'm going to have to get a better fix on what the hell I'm doing before I consider purchase. For now, the demo will suffice.

Re: Kanji and other nonstandard characters should not be allowed in userna

Kanji is a set of standard characters. Its defined in the Unicode standard. But I do see the point here and agree with it; we can run non-Latin characters through a machine translation system like Google Translate, but there's a risk that we'd get the wrong translation -- and I'd say that that's a 50-50 risk. However, I don't think that the forum supports this -- you'd definitely need a regular _expression_ for this.

Re: Python. Should I learn?

@manamon_playerYou requested games that were made in Python and are usable. Everything I listed is usable in the sense that they run and provide a gameplay experience. DMNB failed not due to the language but the developer who seemingly decided it was no longer worth their while. Not too sure what else in that list doesn't work, but I can be sure it wasn't Python. Most have open sounds but again, not the fault of the language and thus irrelevant here. You can't blame the interpreter for the fact that the developer, for one reason or another, didn't package their assets into a single file which could be broken anyway. At the risk of sounding arrogant I can crack open basically any BGT game you throw my way using trivial debugging techniques and ASM knowledge obtained from reading a book for 45 minutes.BGT has seemingly locked some, you included, into a mindset of something broke so it must be chalked down to the language. For most applications this isn't the case, especially when an overwhelming number of folks have had boundless success.

Re: Kanji and other nonstandard characters should not be allowed in userna

It is harsh in a way, and feels somewhat discriminatory to just tell people they can't use their character sets. We are telling them that for the most part, they can't use their language though. The two are strongly related.I don't want to curtail people's rights to express themselves either. We're sort of in a situation though where if these chars won't read out, or will read, but in a notation that is not descriptive, it leaves us at a disadvantage. It's no different than if a bunch of sited people came in here and dropped images in their posts with no alt text or captions.I'm sure there are English IMEs for computers in countries like China and Japan as we have Chinese and Japanese IMEs to type their characters. I don't think this is a big ask either. If someone came in with the username, "ElCaballoGrande", We have an easy way to parse that if desired. Of course we can also copy kanji and translate it, but we lose the ability to go through and identify someone as we read through posts. No it's not a huge problem by any means, but it is something I'd like to see if possible.

2020-09-24 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : magurp244 via Audiogames-reflector

Pandemic Transformation Of SongBird Calls

As reported by [wired]:As tragic as the global pandemic has been, its also had a few silver linings as it puts humanity on hold. Notably, a dramatic reduction in noise pollution in urban environments. As a result of this, Songbirds such as the white-crowned sparrow have shifted and adapted their melodic songs when communicating with each other into lower band frequencies, now that they're not being drowned out. How they can shift and modulate their calls and the range of frequencies, adaptation, and mixture of how they communicate and interact with each other offers a rare glimpse of their intricate culture outside the world of man, and how much of an impact we have on them.

Re: Good, accessible download manager?

So you mean like if you were downloading from a site like Sendspace... I dunno, does that even exist anymore?  Or a free dropbox account, the idm would actually speed things along?  I'm just a bit skeptical on this one...

Re: data dump from a braillenote apex

LOL yeah I did mean the _expression_.As for why it's bad to ask, it's simply because the forum could potentially be held accountable for it at some point if they didn't take action on your post.Of course that's very unlikely, but that's why the rules are there.

Re: Perilous Hearts, will it ever be more than a concept demo?

It's been over 9 years since he announced the project, so I highly doubt it. Of course, it's very possible he's working on something really awesome and doesn't want to make the same mistake of promising something too early. If this is the case, I'll gladly wait and purchase whatever he's created once it's ready. I respect Philip as a developer and while I have issues with his decisions regarding Q9 and BGT, he's been fantastic otherwise and I'll support him because I know whatever he produces will be very high quality. As for Perilous Hearts, I don't care about the crappy story. It doesn't need tons of expensive voice acting either as far as I'm concerned. I love the jungle mechanics and think he could take the concept and build something really cool that's 100 times better than that concept demo. Imagine a really awesome jungle simulator using modern binaural audio.

Is anyone having trouble with these games in iOS14?I find that the focus for VoiceOver jumps everywhere, especially when I am trying to read the table of jobs.So far, it's making the games nearly unplayable.

Re: Anyone tried iOS 14 to see if any games are more accessible?

There's one thing apple could have done for older phones regarding screen recognition.Cloud based recognition!Yes, we would have to wait a bit to first recognise what's there, and then it could just put it up like it does for new phones.I'm really mad at apple now! Aww!
