Hi,This petition is, as others said before, not quite appropriate, based on what Microsoft is doing at the moment.Narrator is rumoured to have scripting support in Windows 10. They are actually in contact with blind people, that is why the enormous improvement to Windows 8s Narrator, touchscreen support, etc. While Narrator is not yet comparable to other dedicated screen readers, it is certainly improving with Windows builds.Microsoft is certainly not going to implement a new screen reader. They are working on Narrator, with or without the petition. I really urge you to, if not cancel it, perhaps wait a bit until we see whats going to happen in later builds of Windows 10.Rob

Re: Thinking about buying paladin of the sky, have a few questions though

Yep, as Socheat said the order process is very quick and easy for paladin of the skies, and should be completed instantly. As to what you unlock, well the major thing is how long the game is. Im guessing the demo took you around two hours to finish. Well the full game clocks in at 30 hours plus to complete, then there is hard mode, and a couple of extra bonuses such as the optional dungeons and stuff to find on your next playthru, there are even some minigames and extra challenges throughout the game. The only reservation is that while there are a lot of dungeons and a lot of story and battles, a certain percentage of the games long play time does come from getting lost in huge dungeons due to the lack of navigation features, and some of the spaces in the game are rather artificially large, also, with the majority of battles just being about throwing your best dragonstrike at the enemy, things can get a little grindy, though neither of these are reasons to forgo
 buying the game imho, personally id decided to buy it before I finished the demo .

Re: I'm blind and want to develop a very complex game

Hi,Maths, Braille or other writing systems in general and languages are not the same kind of code and logic as programming.Noone is trying to demotivate, insult or criticize you here, I believe, rather were just pointing out the most likely issues and setbacks that you will simply have to accept and expect sooner or later, whether you like it or not, either by trial and error coming out of experience or by preventive consideration. :-)My time estimate was more or less, rough, I admit that, but based on what has been seen in the audiogaming community. Ive seen other programmers of varying degrees of proficiency, Ive done some programing or rather just BGT scripting and web development myself and Ive heard many ideas like this one. Believe me that I would be so delighted to play any one of them that my heart would probably explode from all that pressure. But considering that even Shades of Doom took a year or two, I believe, other projects I
 ve been part of as a tester but that I cant talk about in greater detail yet took equally as long or longer or are still being worked on in some cases, etc, all of them being carried out by experienced or even professional programmers, I think you get the idea.Most audiogame development teams are single guys. In that case for this specific game, you would have to be a decent voicecast and director, sound designer, programmer, script writer, web developer, team director as you would need a team of testers or at least a good strategy and quite a lot of money to pay to other people to delegate stuff to, not to mention the contacts to these good people, etc. Several games have been developed in collaboration of a programmer and sound designer and only about one or two exceptions, such as Top Speed, have been developed by 4 or 5 people where two guys were the main programmers and the rest sort of split up the remaining jobs among themselves, although I havent yet
 seen the strict kind of task separation thats to be expected in other, mmore mainstream like teams anywhere in the audiogaming community.Just my thoughts,Lukas

Re: Thinking about buying paladin of the sky, have a few questions though

Here is a quick overview of what you get when you buy:You get about 13 times as much content as you get in the demo. This doesnt include hard mode, which as far as I know isnt anything very special because it just makes the enemies slightly harder.You can get a random gift from the server each time you play. This gift can be very useful during your playtime.I would say that you get between 25 and 30 hr of playtime, and a lot of it is trapsing through dungeons like dark said.You get extremely hard dragon strike scrolls.You get fairly boring and repetitive combat. Except for some of the bosses. At least some of them make you think, such as Jason, or analytics manager.You get a fairly flimsy story that, with work, could become something good. The plot itself is good, but the writing is amateurish. For people who like reading game story, I was not very impressed with the writing or descriptions of things.You get a lot of opportunit
 ies to be rewarded for being curious. This usually amounts to exploring parts of the area that you didnt necessarily have to visit.You get to listen to a lot more of the games music. This is actually something I think helps make the game worth more because some of that music is good, especially since its all synthesizer based, like the wastelands music, and the tower of fear music.Personally since I am a fan of exploration it was worth $30 to me, though the storyline, fairly uneventful combat minus some of the interesting boss fights, and the endless getting lost only slightly detracted from the exploration.

Hello,We have officially started work on the achievements system! Achievements are urned when you perform any space-based or ground-based activity, such as debris salvaging, space combat and manual ship repairs. Achievements enable you to buy different moddels of starship at higher levels and also start building starships when you reach a specific level of achievements. the available achievements are split into two groups. Industrial achievements and combattive achievements. Industrial achievements are urned through salvaging and mining, currently only salvaging is implemented. Combattive achievements are urned through starship kills and manual starship repairs while in space. You can view your achievements by typing ACHIEVEMENTS shortened to ACH. Happy gaining!Also note that we are currently implementing more activities, including space-based and ground-based grouped missions, which will allow for crews to work on starships together.

This is going to be an unusual topic for me. I just started reading one second after by William Forstchen and I am wondering, what would happon to us in something like this? How long can we really survive something like an EMP or something else? Think about all the electronics that we have and the like. I am think that if something like this happon, no matter what country or who you are nor your view point, this could be bad. I need to go do some looking to see what the likelyhood of this happoning, but with the weapons that men kind has a whole seems bad enough, even if this can not or does not happon. If you do not want the book spoiled, do not click on the link. it leads to a Wikipedia page that gives the plot to the book. LOL.

I like games with progressive storylines (such as the dm series). I am considering purchasing it, maybe I will.As much as I like the story, I do agree that its not written very well.Sounds like a great game though. Re: developing a kind of radar?

2015-01-07 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: developing a kind of radar?

This is where the typical architecture breaks down and is also why I advocate reading sighted game programming tutorials. Youll need to architect your whole game to not use wait statements save in exactly one place. The typical approach to this is to define objects with a tick method, put them in a list, and call all the tick methods every time through your main loop. The only thing allowed to call wait, ever, is the last line of your main loop. This allows the radar to have a function called at a known time. You then replace the for loop and wait statements for the radar with two counters: the first being the angle at which youre currently pointing and the second being how many ticks to wait before incrementing again. Something like this (Python):def tick(delta):
 if wait_counter != 0:
  wait_counter -= 1
  return
 radar_angle+= 1
 if radar_angle = max_radar_angle:
  radar_angle = min_radar_angle
 sound=compute_radar_sound(player_position, radar_angle)
 sound.play()
 wait_count = 5 #or whatever.\The delta parameter is the time between ticks. This is useful because you can replace the integer count of ticks with a floating point count in seconds and then subtract delta instead. This lets this particular bit of code be completely independent of how fast the game ticks. Im obviously leaving out a lot, but this should get it across. Id make all the tick methods take the delta and just ignore it if you dont need it: the end result is that you have the information and your new main loop can be like 10 lines.You can abstract the waiting functionality into a base class, as well as other behaviors. Using this architecture, you can implement bases that call a function every x seconds, call a list of functions at given times in a loop, etc. Perhaps most useful is a base class that calls a function exactly once after a given wait, but which has a method on it to schedule the next on
 e. This particular configuration can represent almost anything: a call rescheduling yourself is the above logic, a call rescheduling the next function in a list of events is a timeline, and a call which conditionally schedules the next function is a pretty easy to read finite state machine.

Hi, Im back! I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions as to the best ways to develop a kind of radar, that detects whats in front of the player for maybe 4 or 5 steps, in a half-circle? Ive tried to do this, but in its current form it causes the game to freeze every time its activated, Im sure this is because of the for loop and wait statement, but Im also not sure of any other way to go about it.Dropbox link:https://www.dropbox.com/s/i7f5rj63a6egq … r.bgt?dl=1Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Re: Very disappointed

Hello,This is actually very annoying. If I was running a charity and was employing people be that volunteers or whatever, Id actually show each of them a screen reader first and explain how to navigate around a website without the mouse, so that when they get called by someone from the blind community, they might be able to try things on their end too with a copy of the screen reader on their computer, who knows, it might end up having them replicate problems and they may then have a mind to fix them.A lot of these organizations, while charity organizations, employ people to do a job, but thats it. They get people with experience of working on the phone, they dont seem to check if they have experience with access technology though, which in this day and age I think is a rather large problem.

Re: Surviving something major like an EMP?

I read a book series about an emp strike (they never really outright stated that it was %100 sure an emp), but all the things that happened in the story pretty well suggested it.Granted, some of the folks turned into crazed beings, others died (from the electricity or whatever messing with their brains), but a lot of it Im sure would happen in a real emp. I forget what it was called though. Personally, if there was an emp, I think people would go absolutely crazy and chaotic, and death and crime rates would sky rocket. Thats just what I think. Maybe not so much in those countries where electricity is not common, but in places such as the USA, where I live, things would be crazy.

disturbing nightmares

2015-01-07 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : wanderer via Audiogames-reflector

disturbing nightmares

First off, I dont really expect to get any help by posting this here. This has been going on for quite a while now and while its disturbing, I seem to have gotten used to it as much as one can to this sort of thing. Ive Googled around and there dont seem to be people who experience my exact set of problems, or at least no one posts about it if they do. I havent posted to a dedicated psychology forum because I doubt Id get any real answers, and I dont expect to get any here; I just need to get this out, so feel free to stop reading if youve got something better to do.This is not something I normally like to talk about, but since this forum is relatively anonymous I might as well.I will say that Ive had other weird mental experiences throughout my life, and while I can explain most of them away intellectually, emotionally I wonder if there may be something more going on. Without going into detail, members of my family
  have dealt with onsets of sudden mental problems in the past, and one of my biggest fears in life is that something of that nature might happen to me. Also from what I gather, my thought process is not exactly normal (Im using that word loosely) so this may just be a part of my psychological makeup.Since 2011 Ive started having these episodes where Ill fall asleep, have a short nightmare that lasts fifteen or so minutes, and then wake up. This usually happens when I drift off after Ive been having trouble getting to sleep. Theres no consistency in the content of the dreams, but the thing that differentiates them from regular dreams is this total feeling of absolute wrongness, as if reality itself has been contaminated. That sounds cheesy, but its the only way I can describe it. They vary widely, and some wouldnt be bad dreams at all if it werent for this feeling. For example, once I simply dreamed that I had fallen asleep at my
 computer or something, and I was trying to figure out if I was in bed or a chair, and possibly moving between the two, also my bluetooth headset was involved. Another time about a year ago I dreamed I was in the house Id just moved out of, on the floor between the head of a bunk bed and a wall, possibly looking for something under the bed. Throughout all of these dreams I feel this sick horror or dread, and upon waking up, its irritating if nothing else; a couple times its gotten to the point where Ive simply avoided sleeping almost all night if Im not tired, and dealing with the consequences the next day. Sometimes it sneaks up on me when I am tired, and so I now approach sleep, which Id normally look forward to at the end of the day, with a degree of trepidation. All my life, Ive always been curious about what that nights dreams would bring, but as of late, even excluding these particular episodes, my dreams have taken a serious turn
  to the negative. And yes, Ive tried all the standard suggestions, thinking positive thoughts etc, but nothing seems to work.The onset of these dreams seems to have been somewhat gradual; I recall a similar one back in 2010, and there mightve been more Ive forgotten, but I can pinpoint the exact day (and time) they started occurring frequently. Strangely enough, that first one was milder than subsequent ones, and it started just a bit after I started looking into lucid dreaming. They dont seem to be going away and I fear theyll get worse. Also if anyone is thinking to ask, 1) I dont believe this is sleep paralysis, and 2) yes, Ive tried to use this feeling, being that its a recurring dream sign, to attain lucidity, with not much success. It seems that whenever the topic of lucid dreaming comes up in a dream, it just gets incorporated into the plot of the dream. I think that if I were able to become lucid I might be able to deal w
 ith it better, but the few times I think I may have been at least semi-lucid Id be afraid and sometimes terrified of what my own mind might throw at me, and desperately try to wake myself up. I dont just want to be able to do that; I want this to stop.And that is all

Anyone here experienced Exploding Head Syndrome

Okay, for those of you who dont know, EHS, as is sometimes abbreviated, is a phenomenon similar to an out of body experience. The sufferer usually hears a loud series of sounds. For me, I often hear the sound of a 1000-HZ tone or the rumbling of my muscles contracting and relaxing.People dont know what causes it, but I think I do. This is because,quite unexpectedly I had a recurring episode one day after I heard aboutit. The dream was something like this. I was going to some kind ofbuilding that somebody told me about in one of the novels Ive beenreading. But I soon realised I was out in the open and I was lost.Before I could do anything, however, I was made aware that the insidesof my ears were twitching in a weird fashion. Thats when the soundsstarted. In my dream, I said to myself, oh no, not again! So I stuck myfinger inside my left ear and I discovered the sound was mostly on theright side. I
 started to fall down rapidly, but since I have gonesky-diving, and because I knew I was having an episode of EHS, I did notwake up, or so I thought. I woke up inside another dream. I was usingmy laptop, and I discovered that if I twitched the muscles in the middleear, I would hear the sound, so I tried to control it until I foundmyself slipping out of the dream, and soon I was on my bed.

Re: nvda: its achievements over the years and its drawbacks

Hi keywasfulWell I can answer the first question simply enough.Nvda needs to have a jaws intercept to use this extra function.That would immediately stop it becoming portable though unless there is a way to load the intercept only when required.The way intercepters work at least traditionally and this is before the xp direct chain manager, mirror drivers and uia at least from my experience is that say you have 3 readers hal jaws and windoweyes. or even 2 hal and jaws the first reader in the chain loads the next reader in the chain and that loads the next reader in the chain.This loads the video card.Yes, the traditional chains loaded in place of the video card.The disadvantages of these were, uninstalling the readers in the wrong order would break the chain.running by mistake both readers would break the chain.running an old version of a reader and a new version would break the chain.jaws got round that
 somehow.If that happened, 1 of 2 things would happen.1. windows wouldnt load the video card and then not boot.2. the video would load in basic mode.The chains are created by an entry in the gdichain.ini found in the windows system folder and a modification to the registry which I got someone at dolphin support to create ffor me.you need to know your interceptor ids and names and video driver names.In the second case I was able to reinstall the video drivers and reinstall one of the readers intercepts and have speech but that was it there were redundant entries in the chain and I was not able to fix those.To fix it fully reformat and reinstall and the problem would go away as it always did till you broke the chain which as you can imagine was quite easy to do I reformatted every week or sometimes every day because I would run 2 readers at once by mistake.Direct chain manager cured this ms and gw worked on it and
 it basically was a library standard that would stop this.The library was the chain link there was still a chain but now all readers linked the library to their drivvers and that linked the video card.When vista came in though user account control and other things basically made the direct link impossible so a mirror driver was used to pull everything together and this fixed things for now.In win8 and up ms decided to scrap ms active access msaa and morf all their access to user interface automation or uia.Uia is an access library which runs in 7 and 8 with a broken version optional in xp maybe vista has uia.In theory therefore all readers run under uia now and starting with supernova 12, everything ran off uia.So saying that I guess its possible for nvda to have an intercept, just like other libraries it interfaces with for access it has full interface to uia but its not enough.any nonstandard controls are still not read its why I have super
 nova screen reader loaded on here to.As for frontends I am not sure how that would work for nvda, the closest we could get would be an ide for python but who knows.there are consoles you can input sertain scripts into and make once only changes to the current runtime, nvda is built on a dll compiled python 2.7 executable so in theory you can tell it things but you cant keep it.One strength of nvda over others is it can call programs, not just scripts to help it understand things but programs like free ocr engines and other things.speech synths and the like and other things.it can call sertain libraries in c++ to apparently and espeak voices can be made and installed in the right folders.One thing nvda has is the controller client which basically tells nvda what to do.I know jaws and dolphin stuff have apis to handle this but the nvvda controller basically instructs nvda what to do and how things should be read.So you could in the
 ory make programs nvda ready either with scripts or as a program author including nvda libraries in your code and tell nvda what to do.However what you need to remember is that nvda is an opensource package and while its had a few grants for a few of its libraries, most of what it uses from its ocr to some of its synths and braille drivers and libs are in fact opensource projects most of these were created for Linux origionally and were either ported to windows or spacifficly created for the project.With all that said there are vary few programs nvda doesnt work with per say.

Re: I'm blind and want to develop a very complex game

Also, getting your project off the ground and keeping it going will most likely be your biggest struggle, Your going to need to sollidly grasp the coding logic to make this complex idea of yours turn in to an actual game that you and your audience can play. Please dont take this the wrong way, because this most likely doesnt apply to you but i feel the need to point out the observation that it seems like people want others to hold there hand when programming that apparent block buster of a game. The truth is, that unless you have a team behind you, your on your own, friend. Of course if you have the coding skills to back up your ideas, then this wont even be an issue. Just be aware that everyone has different answers to coding language and style, and sharing code can at times be problamatic, just because of this difference of viewpoints. I guess my advice, good or bad is simply, get cracking! Make that game, and blow us away with how great it is. I think th
 e market could use more than one complex rpg or similar game right now. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Re: nvda: its achievements over the years and its drawbacks

Good:NVDA does almost everything I want and it does it in a lightweight, and most notably, free package. Everything I want basically boils down to being a jaws replacement.NVDA is extremely moddable. If you want to add vocalizer voices to NVDA you dont have to worry about the driver adding extra overhead to the package. This is the beauty of Add-ons and something that JAWS conspicuously lacks; the closest you get to add-ons is custom scripts which are only the NVDA ap modules. The big integration for a bunch of different apps does serve its uses but I personally like installing just what I need and leaving off the rest.Python scripting language: people who know python can dive right into NVDA scripting without having to read a tedious manual and learn a custom scripting syntax. This is a big one and has really helped to expand the add-on community.not so goodrecognizes fewer controls than jaws: though NVDA is really good at navigating apps when
  they use standard controls, it is completely hobbled by apps with nonstandard controls. Jaws users can use window class reassign to try and equate a weird control to one that JAWS knows, and if that doesnt work, they can rely on frames to speak the necessary content. Both of those have user-friendly front-ends which are far easier to learn than scripting, and in a surprising amount of cases it doesnt do a bad job of simulating the control, at least in my experience. Unfortunately NVDA has none of that, which means that your only option is an app module, or, if you are lucky, you might able to read it with OCR. If youre lucky, and sometimes youre not.I guess its not quite as snappy as jaws. This is probably because its coded in python whereas JAWS uses c++. Its still quite fast, and Ive gotten used to it, so this isnt much of a problem.Of course we could talk a long time about apps that JAWS supports that NVDA doesn

Re: Slender: Lost Vision, a survival horror fan game based on slenderman

Ghorthalon,One problem with the tone telling you which direction is north is what happens when you are facing south?1. You could have the tone muffled.2. You could have the tone play in far left and right at the same time.3. You could only play the tone if you are facing from directly east to directly west. This would be for 180 degrees.I suggest have a hitting bush or brush sound when you are one or two steps from a tree, so that a single sidestep would get you past the tree without hitting it and stopping you.This is what would normally happen.In your description, instead of carrying a recorder, how about carrying a radio, that plays static when the slender man is close?It could be playing the theme song and get interference when the radio signal bounces off his body. .

Dos Games Preservation Project

2015-01-07 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : tward via Audiogames-reflector

Dos Games Preservation Project

Hello everyone,Over the last couple of weeks there has been a bit of discussion on the best way to preserve and play some of our favorite Dos games. Solutions have ranged from finding a way to make Dosbox and other Dos emulators accessible to actually running MS Dos in a virtual machine with varying degrees of success. While all of those solutions have some merit I dont feel they truly address the problem of preserving those games and applications for the majority of VI gamers, because they are problematic at best and are not simple solutions to the problem.Ideally a solution wouldnt involve installing and configuring lots of extra software like emulators or virtual machines. I feel pretty confident in saying the average VI gamer would just rather install and play it no extra dependencies required. Therefore if we are going to truly preserve these games for the average user we need to look elsewhere other than emulators and virtual machines. What I mean b
 y that is by getting together a handful of interested developers to rewrite most of these games for modern platforms.It isnt as complicated or as much of an undertaking as it sounds. A lot of these games we are talking about are text only and as long as a developer intends to rewrite it as a text based game he or she can rapidly rewrite the game since they arent worried about all the extra overhead that would go into an audio game or a video game. By and large text applications and games are pretty simple, and dont take a great deal of time to create. Especially, if they use the right tools and languages for the job.Back in the 80s and 90s when a lot of these text games were written they would have been written in C or C++. That is fine, but there are simpler solutions now. One such solution is Python which is a high-level scripting language well suited to quick and dirty text applications and games such as we are discussing. I can see an
 interested developer rewriting some of these Dos games in Python, compiling them, and releasing them in a fairly short amount of time barring other commitments of course.I feel rewriting these games is the best of all possibilities because it resolves all the problems with playing the originals. First, since the games will be rewritten from scratch they will be compiled for 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems thus negating the requirement for a 16-bit environment to run them. Second, they can be released as open source so that future generations of gamers can take the source make new builds if and when needed. Third, they can be redesigned and ported to multiple platforms meaning that instead of just being strictly a Windows game they can be compiled and run on Mac, Linux, etc. Finally, they are games that a blind and a sighted gamer can truly play together. While there will always be disparities between a blind and sighted gamer playing a video game or an audio game they wou
 ld be equal in playing text based games. So I see this as being a distinct advantage of having a common user interface like text.In any case I happen to have some free time coming up, and I was wondering if anyone is interested in this project. If so what Dos games would be foremost on your wish list and why?

I think Ive patched the server to stop people from exploiting the CMM bug, but I cant really know for sure unless someone here tests it out for me. Please let me know if it is indeed solved.In the mean time, Ive been digging through the logs looking at all of the people who were using cheats and bug exploits to rack up millions upon millions of free reputation and XP. I wanted to be a nice guy, so when I released this small 3.4b update, I literally deleted the whole log file from 3.4. I figured there were tons of bugs and I didnt really want to dig through it to punish those people who were cheating on it. Now that this small update was posted, Im not going to just ignore this a second time. The way I see it, those people were given a second chance even if I didnt take the time to tell them all they were given one. The cheaters this time around are going to get warnings or bans, based on how many times
 they were cheating. When I release a patch trying to stop the cheats and people start right up and begin doing it again, thats just plain insulting.

Awesome! It looks like you fixed what I sent you. I have not tested every map, but the one of the maps that was involved in producing that bug prevented the last few steps I said from occurring.Something else you may want to look at: the ambiances in cmm missions are scrambled. Example: you hear the freezer sound in the truck and the truck sound is playing way inside the warehouse.It is not just with warehouse maps: sometimes leading a regular map will have the ambiance messed up as well. I heard a wind sound inside the safe zone for example.Thanks for your time fixing these bugs.

Re: First steps of game development help

I recommend just leaving out the whole programming thing for now.First, define your game. Write it down in such a way that someone who hasnt been with you when the idea first started to exist knows exactly what kind of game this is going to be. You say you command a pirate ship, that is a good start. Now, see if you can think up some things this ship needs to be able to do. You mention cannons, so I am guessing a combat element is involved. A cannon needs to be able to load ammunition and fire it among other things. I am also guessing the ship needs to be able to move across a map, but I am already guessing here because your plot could contain the fact that your ship is actually stranded and you have to somehow get loose by using resources from the surrounding landmass or so. What is the games objective? Are you fighting other pirate ships? Are these other ships, if they exist, player-controlled or computer-controlled? Is there going to be a storyline or is it ju
 st separate tactical scenarios? This is the kind of thing you need to ask yourself before you do anything else. Once you have a good outline, thats when you start thinking about what technologies etc. to use.

You probably need to install or reinstall the bootcamp support software. Specifically which version is required depends on your mac, and you should have these files somewhere if you went through the bootcamp assistant and let it download them.

Hello everyone,I was wondering, since i am also building an audiogame what is perhaps known in the community as your_adventure. but the guidelines in the forumlist of this topic, tells early alpha. but your_adventure is heading for alpha 3 with various solid mechanics and after alpha 4 or after this alpha 3 i will head for beta. not sure yet.so my question is, can i post alpha version 3 in new releases or should this belong in this room (developersroom).appologies if this topic is in the wrong place, i thought that questions to developers can be asked here. if it is, please dark move it to the right place. ill await the answers.greetz mike

Re: planning to buy a PS3, XBOX 360 or a PS4

I take a different aproach for my ps3 downloads.When downloading a game, press x to send it to background download. in this way, the console will reconect if internet goes off, and you can turn off the ps3 and it will continue when you turn it on again.from the games tab, go right once. in this tab, there are 4 options. but if you are downloading something, there will be a 5th option, download manager. i think its the top option. press x, and you can see how many things you are downloading. because you can scroll? the list, and if you have 5 items, then, thats the number of downloads youve currently in your kewe.if you turned on your ps3, just go left once to go to this tab im referring to. and when all downloads are complete, the download manager will disappear from the options, so, you will have 4 again.Now, you can go to your games tab and start installing. most important, the ps3 background download will never stop a download. if
  internet is lost, it will try to re-conect indefinitely.

Re: I'm blind and want to develop a very complex game

Heh. The worst programmer I know is myself. Camlorn_audio has the second-worst piece of code Ive ever written in it. I do not talk about the Camlorn_audio code.In fact, Camlorn_audio is a prime example. I started out to solve the 3D audio problem. Unfortunately, I didnt have anyone who was able to say that I didnt understand the problem I was trying to solve. Net result? 6 months down the road its basically dead because its inflexible, incapable, crashing all the time, and unmaintainable. I took the lessons from it and applied them to Libaudioverse; for the most part they were good, but one of them was actually a really bad idea disguised as a lesson, again wasting a month wherein I basically went through the project line-by-line and rewrote.Camlorn_audio actually contains the second-worst piece of code Ive ever written. The worst piece of code is unpublished, was written in
  4 hours, and lets just say that it shows how well I know C++ and not mention the fact that I need to look at least one thing up when I try to read it again.

Re: Surviving something major like an EMP?

2015-01-07 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Surviving something major like an EMP?

No nation stands forever, but Id say its a fair bet that humanity will at this point. Not only do we not want to kill the world, you cant without multinational collaboration. If you were building enough nukes to do it, every country in the world would know: its going to take you at least 5 years, and you cant let them off in parts (because Ill just stop you with my single nuke, and there goes your whole manufacturing base). The only thing that would have a chance is some sort of dirty bomb, but even then pockets survive on places like isolated islands. Anyone who has taken basic physics will understand the difficulty of the EMP strategy: its just as bad as the nuke one, in that you need hundreds and hundreds. But its also worse because such things take a hell of a lot of energy, and the energy required goes up nonlinearly with the size of area to be covered.Right now, we still have many, many peopl
 e alive who lived without computers. This includes most of the scientists who invented them in the first place. America has farmers, you know, but it is true that it also has one of the heaviest reliance on tech. We would probably see the most population drop there. But no, we wouldnt need the knowledge to come back in from third world countries who, after such an event, couldnt give it to us anyway.No, people arent just going to go on a book-burning rampage. There is enough duplication that even if some do, nothing of major importance is lost. Even if most people did, there are places which presumably have government--and government is designed not to panic in this kind of situation, so I bet theyd know that we shouldnt burn the books even if everyone else went raving mad. Your library can give you all the information you need to live off the land, build radios and candles, build simple crank generators t
 o charge them. You can find recipes for batteries in science books aimed at 5-year-olds. You can find info on how to make better ones from any chemistry or electrical engineering major.Wed have radio in 5 years, and it would be able to reach across the ocean. Why? Those satellites I mentioned or,if nothing else, the moon. The so-called moonbounce is a pretty well-known Ham radio hobby these days: aim your radio at the moon just so, an itll arrive places it normally cant because the earth is curved. We know where the satellites are, we still have mechanical telescopes, and therefore we can plan communication windows with different locations. This requires zero computers, and can be done with really basic hand-fabricatable hardware and crank generators. You can make a hydroelectric plant the size of your laptop and capable of providing continuous power by diverting a little bit of a waterfall with a shovel or some low-g
 rade explosives and connecting it to your hand generator. I know almost zero about engineering this kind of stuff and only have some basic physics but, if I were sighted, I could have a radio inside a week after a trip to my local library. A radio powerful enough to do a moonbounce is harder, and the major delaying factor is waiting for more than one station to be online and/or finding the other station. Basic electronic components can be made in your kitchen.Basic computers would take longer, but the techniques for solid-state devices are also old enough to certainly be found in written form. This would require more organization. We may not have raw resources handy, but all those computers that dont work anymore are sure made of a lot of metal and rare elements, now arent they? And again, the techniques for recycling them are known. This needs organization, and it would take time for computers to be widespread again, but t
 hey would come back and, again with the satellites, a good chunk of the internet infrastructure is still in tact. In fact, all the miles and miles of internet cabling is probably also fine--EMP doesnt typically hit that kind of stuff to my understanding. If youre lucky, one of the old wires that runs under the ocean is still working, though theres a lot that can go wrong there, and Im not sure if we maintain any of them anymore.The chances of it hitting everything? Small. If someone saw this coming, Id power off my devices which gives them a much higher chance of surviving. There is hardware in emergency bunkers. There are survival cults who arent taken very seriously at the moment, but who have put together all sorts of plans for this kind eventuality. Fiction gets this pretty wrong for the most part-we are not suddenly in the dark ages again. This doesnt hit modern social ideals like slavery
 is bad. This does not revert all of Christianity back to the days of the witch trials. This would suck for me as a person given my visual impairment, and it would suck for many others. But we could be back to the point of the space program and considering visiting mars within a hundred years.And finally, vehicles. There are still

The reason why Im so concerned about the actual technology is mainly because when it comes to programming I know very little. Ive worked with some data bases so Im not completely new to coding but what I want to get a feal for is basically how much can be accomplished with x amount of resources. How big is the project to write a game where you control a ship that can fight other ships on a map in realtime? How much difference would it make if the combat system was completely turn based. Im trying to gage the size of my project so as to be able to decide how large I can think given my resources.
