Re: Trying to create a text based game. Tips?

Depending on how complex the game is, you might not even need much PHP.  If it's like those books where you had to turn to different pages based on your choice, you could have an HTML page for each page in the story.  I've done a few of these, and they're a fun project for beginners.  But if the game has any kind of data, like money or lives or score or whatever, then you'll definitely want to learn a scripting language such as PHP; and even then, you could actually do it in _javascript_.  There's this thing called "localStorage" that makes it possible to store data like that on the player's machine, rather than on a server.  This makes it especially easy for a beginner, because you don't have to buy web hosting and learn to deal with databases.  Don't get me wrong - I'm sure you'll want to learn server-side scripting (PHP, databases etc.) someday, but I wouldn't stress it right now.

Sorry... gotta disagree there. I've had no problem finding menus and backing out when I need to, online is solid despite a few crashes I've had since Tuesday, and the sounds for meter are definitely there. Menus are a little more confusing because similar to guilty gear and blazblue, they aren't simply the up and down menus that most people are used to. I have no sight at all and am enjoying the game immensely. Have won a few matches online and am working on beating all the different survival ladders.

What does age have to do with creating a game? Someone else can help you create a paypal account. Have you ever heard of parents? The bass of the game was realism yes but as a game and it's fan bass grows so  does the game development. And yes as with any game developing mistakes do and will happen. This game is still in beta after all. Children shouldn't do things for money? Really dude? Do you work for free yourself? Don't you expect to get paid for the work you do? No matter the age of a developer mistakes will be made in development. Why? Because there is no way to know if something will work unless you put it out there. Now lets see the game that you have developed without any mistakes.

Hi all.I have taken an extremely long brake from the game. I haven't played since PK got so annoying so you couldn't play without constantly getting killed. I really like that PK now is an optional thing.I see that a ton of new things has been added since I last played the game. There has been added so much, so it might feel like a totally new game for me.Is it possible to get your own house or have any kind of storage so you don't loose all your stuff if you get killed? When PK is turned off, are there then other things than the animals which can kill you? If I choose to go exploring and travel a lot in the game, do I then need to take lots of water and food with me, or will I find this at other places than the main land as well? Are there NPCs in the game, or only other online players? I mean, such a huge world would feel kind of lownly when traveling around, if all the players are around the main land. I look forward to play this again when the server comes up.

I'm writing them on an iPhone at work.I think you flipped first person shooter and 2D action in the above post.  Text based games, like choose your own adventure stories, would probably fit into menu based, or could be considered their own sub group of that type.  In the same way, space invaders is 2D action but also sometimes used as its own sub type.

Would someone mind sending me a PM with details of how to obtain Inaudible as well?I think the material on BARD is even more strictly controlled than that of Audible. Personally while I have access to it I've never cared for it, as a lot of the narrators of their older books before they started using the Audible versions are horrible. Plus if I'm reading a series, I want the next book right when it comes out; I'm not going to wait weeks or months for it to be up on BARD. All told, I'd much rather pay $15.00 or so for a book I can break the DRM on, and if I have the ability to do that there's no need for piracy. I certainly don't feel entitled to free books simply because I am blind.

Re: Survive the Wild!

Well, I think Sam is too yung to develop a large online game.He needs to do his study etc. It means, that the game can be discontinued. And how will he pay for the server? How come did he create a PayPal account? I think he doesn't have bankbook or credit card anything, And it's not allowed to create a PayPal account if the person is under certain age. So, my opinion is, this game should be taken over by another developer. Also, he canceled his entire plan, realism. The base of this game is as much realism as possible, and he said that. And the name of this game is Survive the wild. The background of this game is, Surviving, the, wild, in realistic world. But he canceled all of his plan, about realism, Surviving the wild. Why? because of money. Sorry for being harsh, but I must say, that children shouldn't have a PayPal account, and shouldn't do something for money.Let me say one more thing. I think Sam is doing whatever he want. At first,
he started this project as realistic game, and made it overrealistic. And he started this Stw store, with unfair, unrealistic Dfc, forgeting the entire purpose of the project.Sorry for everyone, but if Sam wants to make money, this game should be shareware, no more unrealistic things. And finally Sam, forgeting the purpose of a project could mean that the project will be ruined and discontinued. That's what Danny did with his Dmnb. He forgot his first purpose of Dmnb, So he discontinued the game, and designing a new game. Sam, you should remember the purpose, and you need lot more experience. Thank you.

Re: Genres of audio games?

[[wow]], thanks for all the examples!  Sounds like I'm gonna have to play some of these to get an idea of what the gameplay is like.  I'm not real into those city-building games, but I got the idea when you said chess/checkers (and I kinda want to see what that's like without the visuals, since those are games I know)As for first-person shooters,  it's funny you mentioned Space Invaders - I actually started messing with the same idea just now.  It's a simple panning game, but after 10-15 minutes of code I've already got an alien class that moves toward you and can explodes. But eventually, I'd like to work my way up to 2D action stuff.  The game my friend showed me was really good, so good he's still addicted after he's beat it a few times.  I'm also a bit of a fiction writer, and I'd love to turn some of my sci-fi and adventure stories into games.  And that 2D format
Also, when you say "menu" games, do you mean like text-based games?  I remember a game back in the day, Final Fantasy, where the battles were all done completely through a menu system.  There were graphics, but the battles were turn-based, so that worked.  I also found one online called "Sryth" that was web-based.  Are these the kinds of things you're talking about?

The only issue I have with the death cards is that when you fight someone with a card, they can continue to do whatever they want even when the card is being used if that makes sence. For example they can continue to attack you even when there health reaches0. I think there should be a 5 to ten second pause when your death card is used so they can not continue to attack.

I agree that the whole thing of it being used just this once is bullshit, even if everybody has the best of intentions. So they create a backdoor, just this once, just for this phone. Let's say that once they use it, all copies of the code, in any form whatsoever, are irrevocably destroyed beyond any hope of ever being recovered. The thing is, mental impairments and death not withstanding, once you know something of this magnitude, it is impossible to not know it. For the right price, the people responsible for creating the backdoor could be convinced to create it again, or at least spill the beans about how to do it. I just don't buy the only used once thing.

Agreed with @quaninThe most unfortunate aspect of staying secure is that, well, security is not a two way street.  if you're going to give keys to one guy and that guy goes off and duplicates them in some regard, assume the rest of the world already has keys.  On the other hand, if you give no one a key, you alone are capable of entering.  It's clear by the uproar that was caused by the NSA's mass surveillance is still not getting through; we don't want it!  It's bad enough that we have companies selling our information off to third parties for their own benefit rather than ours... Why in the world would we want to add to it by having the possibility of hackers threatening us with it?

Hi everyone,I'm a legally blind developer, and I've really been getting into "PyGame" lately.  For those of you who don't know it, PyGame is what it sounds like - a game API for the Python programming language.  I've been hooked on it this week, and tonight I just discovered that its audio API is super simple!  This means I now officially have everything I need to create some cool audio games.  Some will probably have graphics too, but my graphic design skills are right up there with Atari (8-bit masterpieces that actually look like what they're supposed to, LOL).  But I'm really more interested in the audio aspect. When I first came up with the idea of creating audio games, I figured it wasn't really a thing (yet).  But then I got with a buddy of mine who is an assistive tech instructor, and he introduced me to BGT, Grizzly Gulch, and this forum.  So obviously audio games are a thing.
p; But what he showed me next was a game that totally blew my mind: a 2D platformer!  It used the NVDA Controller Client to speak messages (and of course I wrote a little module that does the same thing in Python), and it used stereo panning to help locate objects.  And tonight I found controlling stereo panning is a snap in PyGame, so now I'm even more hooked, LOL.But if audio games are already becoming a thing, that kinda begs the question, what are some common genres of audio games?  I'm not talking genres as in fantasy or space or whatever; I'm talking more on the technical side, like how visual games have scrolling shooters, platformers, Zelda-like games movement in 4 directions and with maps etc.   Short version: I got the skills, and now I got the tools, but I'd like some background on what kinds of audio games are out there. Thanks in advance. *smile*PS: This is my first post on here, so please excuse me if it&
 #039;s the wrong place.

Re: some disturbing news: a letter from apple to all apple customers

This has been a thing for years. It's only now making it into the mainstream because of Apple's letter. Everyone from the president on down believes, with very few exceptions, that it should be trivial for Apple to just write something up real quick and magicly the FBI should get access to this phone. Here's the thing, though. Every recent iPhone with a passcode on it is encrypted. Completely. I can't access it unless you give me the code. More importantly, Apple can't access it unless they have the code. There's a reason Apple doesn't have a copy of your passcode, or a master passcode it can use to override yours. Remember the iCloud hack? If that had been Apple's master passcode, or a copy of your own phone's passcode, Apple would be out of business and I'd bet $20 the US government would put them there. What the FBI wants is a ma
ster key. Something that will unlock the phone they currently have, and any phone they want to look at in the future. That's like your local police department demanding you hand them a key to your front door because shut up. If you wouldn't give the FBI the key to your house, you shouldn't be okay with them having the key to your phone. And let's, uh, rather ignore the small matter of they're looking for emails, texts etc that might be on that phone--which would be easily retrieveable through non-encrypted means if that was really the FBI's goal. It's not as simple as, say, what you'd see on CSI, but come on. If you think they can't call up AT and hand them the number for that phone, you're dreaming. And let's be realistic here. They're looking into accounts a guy everyone knows killed a bunch of people might have used on that phone. How hard would it be to do a little old fashion police work here? Certainly eas
ier than taking Apple to court.

Sebby,I guess that's the difference between you and me. I try to look at things with a positive, rather than a negative view. DRM is here to stay, so instead of focusing on the negative points of that fact, I try to put a positive spin on it. Life, in general, is much nicer that way.Jaybird,I doubt that will ever happen because to get a hold of the content to strip the DRM would take the participation of some blind person who has access to BARD, and while the chances of being caught are small, I know that I wouldn't want to risk my access to BARD by participating in such a venture. I would guess that most other BARD members feel the same way.

Re: FYI: DRM is Evil. Very, Very, Very Evil

@Sebby, I sent you an Email. At everyone, where I'm coming from is that I definitely prefer services where DRM is not employed, but sometimes you have no choice but to use a service that does use DRM. For example, if Audible has a book I want, and if nobody else has it in an accessible format, and if I really want to read the book, then I'll buy it, break the DRM, and read it rather than doing without the book altogether. Now the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped here in the US has their BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) service, which opens up a whole new can of worms. Their audio books are protected with encryption, but somehow that doesn't seem as bad to me. For one thing, if you're reading a book from BARD, it's being read in their app or on a special talking book player anyway. For another, DRM is the best and maybe the only way they can comply with the exception to US copyright law which allows them
to make books available to the blind. That exception requires materials to be produced in a specialized format for use by the blind. In older days, that specialized format was Braille books which can't be read by a sighted person unless they know Braille, or various audio formats like hard and floppy disks recorded at nonstandard speeds, and four-track slow speed cassettes. Again, you couldn't just go to the store down the street and pick up a player capable of playing the NLS format.Would I love to find out that somebody's developed a way to crack BARD audio books? Absolutely! But I'm not avoiding BARD and holding my breath until it happens.

If you live in any country with a microsoft store and want a windows laptop, I highly recommend getting your laptop there. I got a 13 inch dell inspiron from the MS store, later upgraded it from 500gb ssd hd hybred to a 250 gb ssd when they went on sale and wasn't even charged for the upgrade. Also, Microsoft's laptops are "signature edition" which means they don't come with any of the manufacturer's bloatware.

Ah, you're talking about the ones that are more rectangular in shape, I've found those to be a pain in the arss generally. When I was a smoker I always gravitated to the more ovoid shaped Bicks that did not come with a flame adjustment nob under where the flame comes out. The other advantage to the ovoid ones is that with a key, you could easily de-safety them thus creating a lot less stress on your lighting thumb where that other variety, which to be honest I don't think is even made by Bick, you were stuck with the safety. Also, even with a larger flame, those adjustable benzine lighters never work well in the wind.

Re: FYI: DRM is Evil. Very, Very, Very Evil

I think I understand you. There's something psychological going on.DRM makes premium bits feel more premium. I'm sure I've experienced that. Heck, I'm sure Audible was responsible for that, to some extent. It's such a wonderful, vertical, well-staged delivery. The bits are protected, therefore the content must be of high quality and you're privy to it. Yeah. I understand. But of course, it's an illusion. The only difference is the decryption. To see how this works, you need only enjoy content you ripped from a CD or DVD that you know is of studio quality. The content continues to be awesome, it just doesn't have the DRM on it. So why does content without DRM feel less valuable? Because it once had DRM, or because the DRM was unwarranted to begin with?I get a bit of both. Sometimes DRM content is just made worse by the DRM. Sometimes I'm glad the DRM is there because I truly value the content. An ABX test would,
of course, fail utterly to reliably have me identify DRM-free from DRM content, because the DRM adds nothing perceivable. It's just the sense you get from the content owner's own self-assessment of the value of their content. So let's do away with the DRM, and have stern copyright notices instead. I could live with that. Or watermarking. The critical point is that we understand the value of this stuff, which I most certainly do.

Re: FYI: DRM is Evil. Very, Very, Very Evil

Whether DRM causes harm depends on what it does. Before I lost my vision I was an avid gamer. Almost all of the games I played had some form of DRM protecting them, yet I never experienced any problems with the DRM, even when the vendor put very tight restrictions on the game's use. And rather than feel like I was being treated like a crook as most DRM critics claim, to me it felt more like I had front row seats to a sold out show that everyone wanted to see.The only time DRM became a problem it didn't really matter because the game it was protecting was so buggy, that it was unplayable, so I was no longer interested in playing the game. The game's bugs will never be fixed because the development team that built it was disbanded. The worst part is, the vendor knows all this, yet continues to sell the game to unsuspecting buyers. The DRM only allows five activations, which I used trying to get the game to work, I tried contacting the vendor several times
about getting more activations and was ignored. I will never buy anything else from that vendor ever again.

Re: FYI: DRM is Evil. Very, Very, Very Evil

I think DRM is evil because it takes control away from the user; that's it's function, and it wouldn't be very useful DRM without it. It is a software adversary, that protects its masters from its users, and presumes guilt over innocence. And unlike say a gun, which has legitimate uses (all of which, incidentally, involve hurting people), DRM has no legitimate uses, because every potential justifiable use of DRM is more than counteracted by the significant harm. It would be like saying that arming people with explosives wasn't a problem because they can be used for legitimate self-defence, despite the fact that they cause serious structural damage to nearby property if used as intended. It only works in an ideal world where every copy is piracy and not a legitimate copy, and where the owner of the content is the only entity who can make informed choices about those copies. DRM cannot judge intent the way a person can, so that means DRM will fail where a person
will not, sooner or later, as this case illustrates; if the DRM were working correctly, it would not prevent my brother from using his files--a technical impossibility for DRM to be useful.More interesting, unless you have law to require DRM servers to run forever, there will come a point where DRM actually harms a company's interests rather than help it. I'm not exactly sure what Amazon intend to do; I guess they're hoping that people will have had a good enough run with their content by the time they shut down the servers, but I guess we won't know until it happens; we don't even know when, because anything might happen to cause it, not just a company bankruptcy or merger, but it's not like we haven't seen other examples of people losing everything to DRM before. I for one won't be caught out by that when it happens.

Ouch, I didn't realize that Amazon actively tries to prevent multiple accounts. I guess that means that I'll never use Audible until there's an easy way to remove their DRM.Not that it matters, since Audible books end up on BARD in a couple of months, once there, it's free. So as long as I'm willing to wait, I can get all the Audible books I want at no cost.As for Amazon closing accounts that have too many returns, all I can say is, try being more careful about what you buy so you don't have to return purchases too often. For example, I just bought a George Foreman grill, I spent several hours looking at and comparing the many models that were available before I chose the one I wanted, it arrived today and after inspection it was exactly what I wanted, so barring that it isn't defective, it's a keeper.Oh, and DRM isn't evil, it's just a tool like a hammer or a gun. It is how the tool is used that determines goo
d or evil. Using a hammer to build a house is good, but using the same hammer to bash someone skull in is evil.So in your brother's case it isn't the DRM that's evil, it's how Amazon uses it that is.

Re: Survive the Wild!

For me someone teleporting away in the middle of a fight is not an issue as it hasn't happened to me, and I've only seen someone do it once in a fight I was watching. I don't know if you have done PK before or not, but the issue isn't DFC or teleporters. the issue is hackers who can kill you over and over before you realize it. As for more general PK and how I and others  do it. The people agree to do a PK fight, and before the fight they agree on rules, weapons to be used etc. like I said before, first death match if you have DFC, or a wager on the fight. for example, I've offered 50 pop cans as a wager if someone gets a first kill on me. And they are fighting with a 2nd account kept empty so they can die with it, so if I kill them I'm not getting anything. The thing is, you only fight with people you can trust. I have DFC and only fight with people I know because of the speed hacking issues. As for the teleporters allowing someone to inst
antly get to anywhere in the game, that is a very common perk in allot of games. you can buy things to make the game easier and less tedious, it's not unique to Survive The Wild. in comparison to other games I've played the prices are so much lower in STW I couldn't complain about it. yes teleporters aren't realistic, but neither are allot of things. finding magic gifts every day, finding unlimited supplies of everything in the game isn't realistic, having grenades aren't realistic in a survival game, using antibiotics on a virus isn't realistic, making pots with no fire isn't realistic, having water vessels magically make water safe to drink, having unlimited inventory, not to mention some of the other weapons that don't fit in with surviving. my point is there are allot of things that aren't realistic, but all of them make the game more fun and enjoyable. Then again I don't have any issues with game content, only thing that fr
ustrates me from time to time is bugs and when the server gets an attitude like it has right now.and maybe I missed the posts, but I didn't see anyone saying anything negative or giving criticism for criticism's sake? I posted about being frustrated, but that's not a criticism, just a posting of that, frustration. not knowing what is up is annoying when there had been a serious problem for two days. Sam's site was down for awhile before we knew what was going on. that's not criticizing something. I'm not going to burn calories pointing out flaws in something or simply saying something is bad, and didn't see anyone else doing that. if anything I feel bad for Sam's, every time he logs into the game he gets spammed, and I'm sure he's constantly getting unnecessary messages on Skype and email which cover up more important messages.I'm not trying to be intentionally contrary, just that no one is saying DFC and teleporte
rs are fine in the forums because those who are against something always have more motivation to speak up verses those who are okay with the way things are. It's not like I'm against teleporters or DFC being gifts in the future, I'm not against that if they are rare enough to still drive traffic to the store. but to say they are bad for the game because they are unrealistic doesn't really work because that argument can be made for allot more things.I also wanted to answer a couple things you mentioned in one of your previous posts Draq.survival packs can be found in the campground, they spawn there and you can gather as many as you want.you can also go around the mountain via the mining area, I'll post directions at the bottom of this message, no teleporters required..also there is a simpler way to get to the village where you can ride a bike all the way through to the city then only have to paddle across two oceans, will also post
directions to that at the bottom.antibiotics and batteries are really easy to gather, they are both in gifts, and you can gather as many as you want from the hospital. that's how I've got mine in the past, lots of time in the hospital and making sure I get gifts every 24 hours. and I don't teleport to the village every time, I go there the manual way plenty. if you do it right you don't need energy boosters, you just have to sleep before every ocean crossing and get energy to 1k. you'll cross the ocean with around 300 energy left. take a short nap on land, bike across the land then sleep before next crossing. you can also travel with multiple people in the same boat all paddling to speed the process up.there are two maps you can get to by going through the mining area, I'll post directions for both of them.beautiful forest landscapego south from the mainland into the shallow ocean. then keep going south into the deep ocean. tur
n to the east and go into the mining area. travel all the way through the mining area east. then exit the mining area east into the ocean. when in the ocean turn north and go into the marsh. then when in the marsh go east, the next map is the

Re: FYI: DRM is Evil. Very, Very, Very Evil

@Figment: Yes. I completely understand that a retailer has the right to refuse business for any reason, and that indeed, returns can mean losses that, if unchecked, would not provide any incentive for the customer to moderate their spending. Clearly, the benchmark is quite high enough that many customers can return items just fine and not be affected. I'm fairly sure Amazon could have handled it better (for instance by putting a human, rather than a machine, in charge) and there are legitimate cases, particularly third-party sellers, where Amazon is clearly in the wrong, but nevertheless it's completely reasonable for a retailer to close an account for excess returns. The UK consumer-rights group Watchdog actually featured a documentary about this situation, although they didn't look at the effects on digital content so much, just on the fact that a surprising minority were hitting the returns limit. But my real problem is with the completely one-sided approach to d
igital purchases. Paying for a revocable license with irrevocable cash is stupid, yet it is what these corporations are happy to trick people into doing. That's clearly ethically bankrupt. I'm happy to make it harder for them to get away with that. Hopefully now you can too.As for DRM in the big picture, I personally believe we will eventually be rid of it. People will realise what a mistake it is to give control of this sort to content holders, for example publishers will suddenly find that they can no longer do deals with competing resellers, consumers will be locked in to platforms, etc. So yeah, DRM will die, eventually, but only once all the pain and suffering and mistakes of a generation of greed and stupidity has run its course. Piracy was never the reason, of course--not when there are so many other, better ways of obtaining pirated content, none of which involve breaking DRM, and all of which are better experiences for the "Customer" than the real
deal. This is because the good of open formats for the customers significantly outweighs the bad, in the end, which is why DRM proponents don't want to lose control over any other kind of media besides music. Compare the CD to the DVD, to take one example. You can rip CDs. You can't rip DVDs--at least, not well, and not as well as any CD. So now we have the absurd situation that it is still preferable to buy a DVD so you can rip it poorly and avoid the DRM of the online download (typically of worse quality), whereas the CD--the format that wasn't protected by DRM--is now dead, and everyone is buying from online music stores just to avoid the inconvenience of physical media. It's crazy. Obviously, it's not piracy, but control. DRM makes it possible to control how and when you use your content, and to enforce in technology that which copyright law will not enforce for the rights holders. The reason it's so hard to shake it off is that nobody could reason
ably disagree with protecting copyright. It's a perfect camouflage. I know I'm not a pirate--well, not much, anyway. Yet my only market response is to buy even more of this DRM-encumbered shit, not because I want it, but because the content distributors really are the only ones with a say in how its produced and distributed and this is the only choice in town. Ugh! Just avoid it as best you can, and break it when you learn how, I guess, until the laws catch up, and copyright gets fixed so it can't be abused in ways that are socially damaging. I daresay DRM and harbouring out-of-print material both qualify for that.As for multiple accounts at Amazon: no, Amazon explicitly go out of their way to link up billing and address details, so you can't do that, alas. In fact, they openly prevent you from touching your account once it's frozen, for that very reason. Nice idea, though.

I know doubletalk can sing because patrick perdue got it to sing a gateway vs aptiva parody of daisy bell (a.k.a the song of hal 9000's funeral).I did mannage to find a youtube video of the eureka a4 in action, mostly demonstrating the word processor, and a cd by the NFB containing related files has also been archived on the internet.

Re: FYI: DRM is Evil. Very, Very, Very Evil

@enes: files received, thanks! I wish I'd checked my PMs sooner; I already had them, but through Mega, which on any browser besides Chrome requires Adobe bloody Flash to obtain. Ugh! Ended up using Chrome on XP, which supports the APIs required. Wasn't going to install it on my Mac. Your download links would've helped me avoid all that. And thanks to everybody else who got in touch to help me find Inaudible. I will explain in detail the DRM at the end of the post, so people living in restricted countries can tune out and avoid the thought police, but you all played your part in helping me understand how it worked. My brother got his account back. For whatever reason, his pleading with Amazon got his account reopened. Maybe it was that he mentioned that he was blind. The memo went all the way up to the head of sales in the UK, which might have meant that the RNIB got involved after all. Whatever the reason, he can now log in to his account, make and retur
n purchases and access his Audible content on any device once again. Cheers all round. Well, except for the disappointment that is DRM, of course. I'll never be grateful for that. We've all learned an important lesson. As soon as my brother gets the gumption together, and now that he has the time, I'm going to help him download all his books and strip out the DRM. That way this can't happen to him again. For myself, I have already completely stripped the DRM from my Audible books collection, with no loss of quality whatsoever, and maintaining the original format and encoding. I was too late to return my Audible credits, but I would have, if I could have; Amazon didn't notify me, in December, when the renewal happened, and you only get 14 days to cancel your membership. Dirty trick, that. Still, with these credits on hand, I might as well stock up on books that I've already paid for. The removal of the DRM means, quite simply, that Audible has a gr
eat deal more value to me than it otherwise would have. I can buy timeless books I will actually value for eternity because they don't have DRM to make them rot, I can get access to Audible exclusives, and I can use my USB MP3 player to play the books in the other room, which ironically probably means I'll have more time for listening. Naturally, though, I don't reward bad behaviour when I can possibly help it, so I'm going to try and avoid them for new purchases, just as I promised to. These bastards can only hurt people because we let them, so I'm going to try the various alternatives that have been suggested, particularly Downpour. Oh, and no, piracy isn't an option I'm happy with, no matter the provocation; at best it's something to be resorted to if there are no other options for obtaining the content and there is a specific, compelling reason to have it.Now, what follows is a discussion of the DRM itself. If you're living in
an uncivilised nation where corporations write the rules (i.e. the US), then you can stop reading now and avoid a visit from the thought police. The tool of choice is called Inaudible. It is somewhat hard to find, but happily, the news is spreading, if you know where to look, and as always, especially among Open Sourcerers who don't mind getting their hands dirty. It can perform lossless decryption of Audible book files. The latest format, Audible Enhanced (file extension .aax) is an MPEG4 container with chapter markings in the metadata atoms, encrypted with a per-subscriber key. On Windows, Inaudible is pretty much a point-and-click affair, and can be automated entirely. On OS X, Inaudible includes the tools required, but not the shell scripting knowledge to do bulk conversions, and its UI seems to be limited specifically to converting one book at a time, although it is still useful for discovering keys and testing the tools. The basic idea of breaking the DRM is f
irst to find your four-byte "Activation secret" and then to convert the audible file into a regular MPEG4 container using that secret. The secret is the golden key with which your files are encrypted for all of a subscriber's files. There are three ways to find it: from your existing player, from Audible's own activation server, and by brute-force. Inaudible seems to be using the third method, and has rainbow tables with precomputed keys and a custom implementation for the Audible algorithm for the open-source rcrack tool. It seems to work well, even without access to iTunes or Audible Manager, as was apparently required in the past. I suppose we should be glad that DRM purveyors are stupid as well as malicious; the key is 64 bits and is usually found in seconds. However, for a fully networked solution, there is the "Audible activator" from the same open-source inaudible-ng project--basically a tool for sending the username and password query to Audible
's server for activation, just as your client would. Now you have your secret, store it away in a safe place. This is

Re: Survive the Wild!

This is the problem with teleporters specifically, in my opinion. As I said a few posts back, everyone who can't or doesn't want to buy them has to do a lot of key mashing to go to far away places like the fishing village. Anyone who has ever boated there knows how painfully tedious that is. Yes, it's probably meant to be painfully tedious because surviving in the wild isn't exactly a cakewalk, and the game is supposed to be as realistic as possible. Everyone who pays for teleporters gets to bypass that painful tedium. Additionally, people can just teleport out of PK if they want. Is that very fair to the people who can't pay considering that paying is the only way to get  them unless you trade with other players or if someone just gives them away? I think not, but that's just me. At least things like pop cans and such can be obtained through playing the game and not by throwing real money around. They can be difficult to obtain, but they can be
obtained all the same. I'm of the opinion that things that can be bought with real money should also be obtainable for those who can't pay for one reason or another. If you want people to have to boat hundreds of tiles to the village, don't allow people to buy tons of teleporters so they never have to worry about it again, and if you want people to be able to teleport, make them work for it in game instead of throwing real money around. As for Sam not being around and why the game is down, he knows. I looked on his Twitter page and he apologized for his servers being brought to their knees, as he puts it. He's having some issues. Keep in mind that he's very young and likely still in school, so he probably doesn't have a ton of time to devote to his side projects. Constructive criticism is great, but try to take it easy on him and be thankful he's even abel to do what he does at all.

Re: all spoonbill software games

That's the problem though. I actually requested BG Solitaire by way of email. This was prior to the start of the year. I still, however, have not received it. So if their reason was feedback, well they're not getting it because how can you rate a game you can't even get? If their reason was tracking, breaking news! There is no proven way to track nonexistent users!  So yes, I agree that if Spoonbill were indeed emailing customers their software products and such a topic as this were posted, that would be quite rude and uncalled for. However, since:1. Spoonbill is not being affected negatively due to there being no profit associated with these games,2. the games being proven unavailable to users, and3. One user who must have acquired them during development or thereafter when they were still being distributed by Spoonbill itself had copies of each,I see nothing at all wrong with distributing them. If no one else gets to it I'll
l look at the lisence agreement for the games. If it states that distribution is prohibited, then this post can basically be vetoed.

The news story that you're talking about is the court order that Apple's letter is responding to. After the order, they had 5 days to respond. That letter was their response. I'm not sure what happens from here, but I definitely think that this event is going to spark the conversation on encryption. I really hope whatever happens here ends the debate on encryption, because it honestly annoys me when people, especially those in the U.S Presidential Debates talk about security and demonstrate that they have no idea what they're talking about.

Re: FYI: DRM is Evil. Very, Very, Very Evil

I understand that Audible talking books are in mp3 format, they just have a DRM wrapper around them. Before I'd be willing to use Audible, I'd first make sure I had a way to remove the DRM from my purchased books just as I did with my Kindle books. I'd also create a new email address that just forwards everything to my primary email account and use that for Audible. That would make the Amazon and Audible accounts separate. But at $15 per book, I doubt I'd even bother because most Audible book show up on BARD in a couple of or less.BARD is a web site provided by the National Library Service that provides free downloadable brail and talking books for people who are registered as legally blind. For examble, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was released as a talking book on Audible on December 18th, it was added to BARD a week or two ago and it was the exact same recording Audible was selling. The same thing happened with the last b
ook of Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series.

What's scary to me is that the FBI isn't just requesting that Apple help then get access to that one phone's data, which is what they should be asking for, they are asking Apple to create a backdoor program that the FBI could inject into any iOS device.Considering that the government abused the powers that the patriot act gave them and invaded the privacy of people regardless of whether they were suspected of being connected to terrorism or not.I hope Apple wins the fight and so never has to create such a dangerous program. No matter how hard they make it to get a hold of the program, if it exists, it will eventually find its way into the wrong hands. Its better that it never be created in the first place.

Re: looking for ideas to help me with my independence

I was floored when I heard that banks were allowing debit cards to overdraft your account, I had always thought that any charge to the debit card that would overdraw the account would be declined. I mean isn't that the whole idea behind debit cards?Besides, in my opinion, needing overdraft protection just shows that you aren't very responsible in your spending habits.I have thought about getting a credit card for use online, primarily to put a shield between my money and any one that might decide to grab my debit card information. But I've always been careful who I give my debit card information to and so have never had any identity theft problems. Here in the US taxi fares are regulated so all the taxi cab companies charge the same rates. So what distinguishes one cab company from the other is the services provided and the quality of the service.Cabbies aren't allowed to refuse a fare, where I've heard plenty of stories from Ube
r and Lift users about calling for a ride and being refused by the driver that shows up for a variety of reasons from not wanting to go to the requested destination to not liking the way the person looks. There is the story of a well known rap singer that an Uber driver refused to give a ride to because he was black.Public transportation is usually good, but the farther away you are from the downtown areas the thinner the coverage is. While I lived in downtown Chicago, the public transportation was great, buses were everywhere with bus stops on every other block, there were also the commuter trains and you could get a cab just by standing on a corner and waving to any unoccupied cab passing by, you never had to wait more than a couple of minutes. But when I moved to Lombard, about 18 miles west of downtown Chicago, to catch a cab you had to call the cab company and request one, then wait for it to arrive, usually about 15 minutes. The commuter trains were usually miles away,
and buses where spread out so you often had to walk a half mile or more to get to a bus stop.

Hi.Yeah its a pitty with digital goods, you can't sell them on.with physical goods I have sold them on, and in fact some stuff I have got because others didn't want it and gave/sold it on.I agree if you return to much amazon is fully in their right to block you from buying anything sadly if that means you get bared from everything well I don't know.Thing is with digital stuff, there is almost no reason to return it.I myself just don't use drm enabled stuff its better not to.

So thanks for the upload, this is much easier. Now more people will be willing to play the games, as well! That just it, they don't cancel each other out. By circumbenting Spoonbill's request that you request a game by email, they no longer have any feedback as to whether anyone is interested in their games. After a while with minimal feedback, they may get the impression that no one cares about their games and so they decide to quit offering them.So if developers stop offering free games because people create ways to bypass any means of getting feedback they may have set up, you'll have no one to blame but your selves. There is also this. While the games may be free, they are
not in the public domain, per copyright laws, the owner of the intellectual property has the sole right to distribute his works. Unless you have specific permission from Spoonbill Software to redistribute their games, you are actually guilty of copyright infringement. So, not only is redistributing Spoonbill's games without their permission a slap in the face, it's also illegal.
