Re: Affordable Braille Displays: Cost vs Quality

The Orbit Reader is supposed to be a $500 display with 20 cells. That's bargain enough that I'd consider it if the thing would ever come out. But that's primarily because it is the only halfway affordable option in general.I was honestly kinda shocked when I looked up prices for a variety of hardware, and found printers for $30. That's, like, 2 slates. Like, what they were using in the 19th century. I'd buy a Perkins for $50, and I still have one of those in a trailer somewhere. And then there's the Focus14, which feels like it should be capable of playing games but presently isn't (outside of Dotris). I don't quite remember the price; somewhere in the $1200-1500 range? So $100 per cell, or thereabouts. Ideally, $100 for the whole thing would be a bit much.I'd only take a multisecond refresh rate if it was a multiline display, so the lines I'm not reading can update without forcing me to wait. The Orbit Reader's refresh rate isn't all that bad, in that it's hard to scroll and move to the start of the line before it's far enough to be readable. Anything slower needs a lot more than going from painfully expensive to just kinda expensive.Really, though, I'm willing to settle for a tiny market markup of, like, 100%, or maybe even 3x. But only for comparable products. Which means anything $2000 or above really should be more than a single line. So, yeah, the Canute sounds nice, by this standard. The Orbit Reader sounds nice in the sense that paying $500 for a 20-letter screen is better than paying $2000 for a 20-letter screen, but $500 for a full page, and the downside is a slower refresh rate? That's much, much better.I'd still like tiny things, like timers or watches or thermometers or that little display on the Wiimote. I don't know if the cost scales poorly for those, or if no one has ever felt like puting in the work for anything that miniscule. But it seems like something that should have been done ages ago, since individuals could more easily afford them, they'd need less software support, could use simpler parts, and could basically be a way to get the idea out there and bring in money for r&d on the bigger stuff. But I'm on the wrong side of the glass to know if that's as simple as it sounds.

Re: What happens if you try to put bgt object variables into dictionaries?

Yes, you can put objects into dictionaries. Just be sure to use the [ a-t ] sign, otherwise you'll get a null pointer error. However, the serialization functions do not work with objects, so you can't use this to save and load directly. I mostly use object dictionaries for movelists and the like. For saving objects in BGT, you're stuck needing functions to convert objects to and from strings. Yes, for complex objects, this is a pain.

People tend to be very helpful so even if it's not included, suggesting it  be an issue and I don't think it'd be too hard to add.

there's always the future, and they've got mermaids, but you'll need to shell out a bit of real money or save up some mythic tokens you can find on rare instances.Anouie is having enough trouble staying afloat with the tiny interest in the game now, but perhaps she'll add more stuff down the road. There are some weird versions of some of the mythics though that are pretty eldritch and scary or water-based. But build up some money and tokens on the site and we'll see what happens down the road.

Thanks. Do you have any experience with this program? I'm having some trouble figuring out how to add podcasts. It doesn't seem to be accessible, which is weird since many of the other buttons on the toolbars are labelled. I tried working with it with both NVDA and JAWS with no luck. The only thing I didn't try was using OCR, but I did play around with using object nav and the JAWS cursor to no avail. I'm really hoping I can get this figured out, because I actually did manage to download one podcast with it, and it was a breeze. The problem was that, since I couldn't subscribe to the podcast, if I wanted to go back and download more episodes, or a different podcast altogether, I had to manually reenter the URL.

Re: Flexible survival mud

Okay to discuss combat as Arnold mentioned Here in the crafting muds topic I'll try and explain how Flexible survival's combat works, since on the one hand there is a lot of information, on the other hand not much is necessary. First, you must! set your flag as screen reader and make sure verbose combat is off. Now, the main thing to remember about combat in flexible survival is that it is essentially like a turn based card game, not like your usual  style combat where something happens every round and you need to attakc fast. When you fight something, first round you get a turn and you'll have your enemies names displayed,  1 husky girl, 2 skunk beast. You can look at them with look 1 and look 2 and target them, but nothing will happen until you use one of your powers. After this the game will count 100 ticks in which the enemies will take turns using their powers until you all have done your thing and give a report on what has happened, who has done what damage etc. This report contains at the start information about damage, then a line about resists, debuffs etc, then at the bottom it'll say "character name's turn" and list all your powers, including those with cool down timers. After this, when it is your turn, everything stops until you decide what to do next, indeed you can use commands like help, chat to people, even check your inventory etc and keep the game sitting there, since nothing else will happen until your ready. So what I do is treat combat as I would in  a browser and simply up and down arrow through the output window in Vip and read the bits I'm interested in, eg what damage has been done and how, then see what powers I can use and take my turn. Alternatively, I can just use auto combat, and then i pretty much just ignore the game until combat is finished. Now whether there would be a way to just shorten the game display to what damage has been done and leave the examination of powers and resists out I'm not sure, though that might be a suggestion to make, since as I said the community seem very friendly.Btw,  my character is Darkempathy on there if anyone wants to say hi.

2017-12-09 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : Dark via Audiogames-reflector

Re: List of Muds for Cooking, Crafting, Farming, and Exploration

Okay I'm going to mention a rather odd entry here, but one which people will recognize if they saw the topic in new releases. about a mud that I'm getting heavily into at the moment which is Flexible survival. Firstly I will say up front the game  is very adult in theme, since the setting is an apocalyptic world over run with sex crazed mutants, thus occasionally your interactions with npcs or monsters can be somewhat extreme in nature, (particularly if you lose in combat), however if you can take that with a spoon full of salt there is a very good game and a very nice community here, and you can even limit some of the erotica from combat by taking certain perks such as "control freak" and "graceful in defeat" Personally I tend to find the descriptions of being ravaged by a hermaphrodite Gryphon and then mutating to grow wings, blue firr, a beak, paws and both male and female genitals so overthetop and crazy they don't bother me too much, indeed I began trying out first the single player flexible survival rpg, then the mud to test out whether I was truly free of my genophobia, since in the past I found the game far too uncomfortable to play, but have stuck  and found some quite exceptional games in there. The game has extremely unique , but as per this topic Crafting is a major focus in the game with several crafting skills that can be raised. All in game items from weapons and armour to food, drugs and furniture must be built. This can be done with salvage which can be gained through battle or other methods. You then need a recipe for the item, and recipes for any other bits you want to add on to the item, as well as the necessary craft skills and salvage, for example to craft a drug you might need some skill in craft chemical and craft energy, and likewise some chemical and edible salvage. Also, on the web interface part of the game (which functions like a separate browser game in some ways and an extention to the mud in others), you can undertake what is called a crafting bounty, this is where you get told to make an item, and if  make it and have it in your inventory, you get rewarded.finding recipes (as well as finding quests, npcs, different forms to mutate into etc  and exploring generally), is heavily encouraged, indeed you get rewarded for exploration as well as crafting. For those not interested in combat or people wanting a change, Flexible survival  also has another quite unique system of advancement called jobs. This is where you go to a city which people are attempting to rebuild  and use your characters' professions and skills to do various needed jobs. For instance characters with the job of Doctor, researcher or teacher might have the research skill, and one job available is scientist, looking through  scientific journals to try and find useful information to help rebuilding programs. When you do a job, you do a dice roll vs your skill, and  successful get xp and such, as well as perhaps other items. This is a system I really like, especially since it's a great way to advance and gives you the feeling your helping in the games' world. You can even do this through the games' web interface, which is great if you just want to quickly use some patrol points and get some xp, however imho it's more fun in the mud iteself since then you get to walk around and read descriptions. Btw, though not part of this topic, the web interface actually makes the game almost function like a browser game in some respects since there are a few activities you can do to advance on the web, as well as some easy ways to train and add things to your character, you can even do something on the web at the same time your doing something else on the mud if you wish, which is freaky but fun. The web activities also tend to be more automated, indeed I'm fighting a monster in another browser window right now as I write this .there is also fishing and animal racing as separate activities with attached minigames, though I've not tried them as yet so can't say how it works. In rp terms, the game does have roleplaying, some of which even awards characters with experience and such, however rp is not enforced for those who do not wish to. With the theme of the game some of this rp  is erotic in nature (though not all of it by any means), however I'm quite impressed at the way the game has a heavy amount of restrictions to avoid those who don't want to be involved in that sort of thing keeping out of it, indeed the community I've found extremely friendly, very helpful, and not the least bit crass or lude. The game even has a system where people can run judged scenes which effectively function like tabletop games in which a judge, acting as gm creates a scenario, and players can roll their various skills etc, as well as type out rp to get through it.I've not tried this yet myself since I'm currently learning the game (and the web interface), so have enough

You could probably extract the values into a dictionary, however I'm fairly certain you have to use arrays for objects themselves. Some higher level bgt master will probably prove me wrong. And besides, dictionaries are ridiculously slow and I would not use them for anything more than saving/loading data once per level or something.

Hm, manual and automatic refresh, yes thats something else to think about. Do you consider 40 cells to be a relatively good average size? If the display were cheaper, like 300$, 200$, or less, would you be more inclined to get one? Maybe thats a bit of a silly question, I mean who wouldn't want to get things cheaper? But what if it only had 30 cells? Or 20? Would a 100$ to 200$ drop in the bottom price be enough for half the number of cells?

Re: Ride, new code editor for blinds

Hi,@Ethin, you could easily send a string to execute from a server to a client and the client could execute that on CMD without showing any window. Similarly, you could code a rudementary file uploader and downloader this way sending the files in chunks over the network, allowing the server to browse all the files on the client and download and upload to directories. Think like file zilla. You could further make use of a wrapper around a dll allowing for voice recording, sending those voice recordings over the network. As for you saying that overwriting all files in my documents is a prank... it certainly wouldn't be so to someone who doesn't know how to use a computer. I could code and example and send it to you, but of course since it isn't coded in binary or at least assembly it would suck.

Re: Ride, new code editor for blinds

@gabriel-schuck, hate to say this but your post makes absolutely no sense. At all. About that code formatter in BGT... I'm going to say this again and highly recommend you *don't* do that. Your going to have to write the parser for the code yourself -- that is no easy task a tall. If you did this in C++ or Java, or even C# you could probably write a code formatter a hell of a lot easier.@34, I apologize for not mentioning that plugin before. I don't know if it's even been released, but it does use, very effectively, the Roslyn compiler API. I beta-tested it and didn't have much practice with it, but what I do know about it makes this little editor completely pointless.

Re: Ride, new code editor for blinds

Jscholes, I couldn't have said it any better. Thanks a lot for expressing just what I had on my mind so beautifully. Just gave you a thumbs up for that post, which was the very first time I ever did that on this forum.Ethin, okay then, now your point of view makes a lot more sense to me. I do apologize for the way and tone in which I addressed you, as well. I do have to admit I was being annoyed by your relatively many posts expressing the same thing over and over again in a pretty harsh way. Maybe if you mentioned your experience with that Visual Studio plugin from the very beginning, it could have made a lot more sense to the others all around, too. When stating an opinion so firmly, it always helps the audience if they can see what you are basing it off.Of all the statements you made about BGT and its possible purposes and limitations, though, I have to reiterate I do agree that it does have serious limitations for anything beyond strictly Windows based audiogames and that it's not a good environment to choose to develop a code editor of any sort, most notably because it lacks any support for GUI's whatsoever, its file i/o is rather limited, and it lacks any decent and more advanced string parsing functions, to name just a few major drawbacks.I was not saying you were being a know-it-all about BGT or that you were wrong, but rather I was refering only to your demeanor. Yeah, communicating your thoughts just textually, without the ability to convey emotion and tone, can be misleading a lot of the time. I would just have appreciated more background information to prevent the initial surface impression that you are just bragging and condemning others for their opinions and choices, possibly limited because of lack of different or more diverse experience, more than anything else.Lukas

The web activities also tend to be more automated, indeed I'm fighting a monster in another browser window right now as I write this .there is also fishing as a separate activity with an attached minigame, though I've not tried that as yet so can't say how it works. The game even has a system where people can run judged scenes which effectively function like tabletop games in which a judge, acting as gm creates a scenario, and players can roll their various skills etc, as well as type out rp to get through it.I've not tried this yet myself since I'm currently learning the game (and the web interface), so have enough to explore with

I agree. This is the point I brought up to a friend last year. He's not updating it, and he's barely supporting it, and as of now he's not at all. Why does he continue to keep it paid if he can't be bothered to give full accounts to people who pay. This is what drives me nuts about devs sometimes. I bought Super Liam a few years ago and never got a key. Now Liam made the game free because he knew he wouldn't be supporting it anymore. Why can't Jason do the same. Of course, I bought the game and got my account, so I'm not to concerned, but still.

Re: Ride, new code editor for blinds

This has, somewhat predictably, descended into a dogmatic playground discussion.  But before I bow out, I wanted to correct something which was implied.  No, you can't write a DLL in BGT.  But nor do you need to learn C++ in order to do so.As an aside, whether people are scripting, coding, hacking, programming, developing, engineering, whatever, regardless of what you call it, what matters is that they are creating.  If they create something that's useful in their daily life, great.  If they manage to create something which is useful to others, even better.  I've tried this, it didn't really work for me, but if it works for the author and maybe others too then that's fine.  Regardless of what language it's written in.  Enjoy your coding!

Re: Animal Acres, a largely accessible and very fun virtual pet game

There isn't really a getting started guide as I remember, however, there is a goals section that largely, if you try to do the goals, will give you some nice stuff as well as give you a few ideas of things to do. also, get your pets in as many shows per day as you can, though you'll have to train them to a discipline first, which changes what stats you ought to train. For example, "trilling" and "hunting" in the bird category need different stats to do well. Also, get your pets all the options at the vet each week and also train them at training arenas whenever possible. As for breeding, the quality of the babies and how good their stats are is based on that of the parents, so you'll want to wait until your animals have some good stats under their belt before you do that. If you've got females, the studding service at the corral is what you'll want to do, especially if you can get the best version of the stud (that is the one with the most stats) If you have males, you'll either have to get a female that isn't genetically related yourself or get someone to help you by letting you use their female. If you have them breed young, the babies will be pretty pathetic if it is just you starting out. But they can't breed past the time when they are 25 years or so, at least in birds so you'll at the latest, if you are intent on getting a female offspring, start breeding at 20 or so. I think the best males at the studding have 1000 stat points in every category, if you can find a female among players who is better or a male, do that instead.also, I'm shooting myself in the foot here with this hint, but stalk the general store, it refills often but also items disappear from it and are sold out very quickly, especially stuff all animals can use. So if you see somtthing like "all Purpose animal wash" buy it in bulk. also, you can search the shop by type of item or animal you can use it for, also, to do well in shows, make sure your animal is fed and clean, as well as happy when you go into one, plus of course, being recently taken to the vet, the vet is required but you'll do terribly if you've got competition, even if your stats rock if the basics aren't there. I think deworming at the vet cleans your pet pretty well.

It's gonna be a while till the 8th gens come down in price enough to find an I5 in a 600 dollar or less laptop though I bet.But yeah I heard about that too, pretty cool. The problem with the Dell's is that pretty much all of them have audio enhancements, but I'm gonna do more research on the Latitudes, even though the recent ones have been getting pretty low review scores. Also, as mentioned before, Acer has gotten significantly better in the last few years.Check out laptop mag's best laptop brands, I just really wish they kept the previous year's scores around, really freaking annoying that they don't.

I don't own either, but I have had experiences with the tiny dot device, which actually isn't too bad.  I was at a buddy's house and he was able to talk to Alexa from across his living room, with the dot sitting on a bar that divided the living room and kitchen.      You don't need Prime to do a lot with it, although having a Prime account has it's advantages.  Especially, the free 2 day shipping, music, and what not.  If you have spotify or any  kinda free pandora, it will work with that.    There are some things I'd like to mess with and  I'm not sure what generation I will go with since I'm not biased to one.

An update on OCR and Xbox One

2017-12-09 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : Sightless Kombat via Audiogames-reflector

An update on OCR and Xbox One

I've been conducting some tests with the NVDA OCR features available as part of Windows 10 and have made some interesting discoveries.  I thought I'd put them here for discussion:Rock Band 4's Tour Mode, whilst not flawless, can be more easily accessed with the OCR features.  Voting is problematic but doable, though sometimes there seems to be variation in the order of songs display vs the buttons you use to vote for the song.  Audio calibration is actually possible as well, so if you're stuck and need to readjust things, it should be relatively straightforward to do.  To exemplify this, I did it myself without sighted assistance and can now play virtually lag free on guitar.Injustice 2's multiverses and various menus are actually readable though in certain areas to a more limited extent.  Stage select reads so those who want to achievement hunt can do so with varying degrees of success.  Story Mode isnt much improved, though you can keep track of the number of fights you've completed which is useful when achievement hunting with this particular part of the game.EA games seem to read fairly well with OCR, though I've not dived too deeply into them as of the current time.  However, getting through setup processes with accompanying instructions is made far easier by the Windows 10 OCR features. The really big one: OCR does, in fact, read the Xbox 360 guide during emulation.  I have not, at this point, tested as to how notifications are handled, however I believe this is a huge step forward even if Narrator never reads the 360 guide. If I find anything more significant in this area I will try and update this post accordingly.

The old installer allowed you to select which components got installed and which ones didn't. This new installer just installs everything.Anyway, I'm glad you finally got it sorted out.Has it ever occurred to anybody that the video intercept driver has been a part of JAWS for so long that to get rid of it Freedom Scientific would probably have to do a total rewrite and no company is going to do that to a successful product. Whether they want it or not, they are kind of stuck with it.That being said, I would guess that video accessibility is just the video intercept driver implemented in a way that complies with Windows 10 requirements.

Re: Ride, new code editor for blinds

@Ethin@23if this possibility existed for the creation of graphic interfaces in bgt, would you still say that this would be a problem?Because then the existence of commands that produce dialog boxes and input boxes?autoit is by no means a programming language and can do graphical interfaces.the game operation blacksqware was made with it, totally out of the purposes for which the autoit was done.I've seen a kind of "keylogger" done simply in autohotkey.the code itself may not be anything malicious, but behaves like this from the point of view of those who observe its functioning.so let's face it: creativity overcomes any limit.if it is not in bgt, maybe it will be in conjunction with another tool.but that is not necessarily why people need a true programming language to do things.we will arrive at a point where anyone will be able to program a computer and develop its ease. It is only to see how the specific languages for a certain task are being used.I can create a song in bgt and this need not necessarily be the music of a game.I can create a simple sound mixer where I can adjust pitch and pan, yet which runs ogg or wav files. Is there a problem with that?I'm already preparing a "code formater" in bgt for my personal use.it will convert already tiped single blocks of code to a well-indented code and vice versa.may not be useful for you, but for me it will help me a lot.and sorry, but you certainly did not come from the MS-DOS era when you programmatically using bat scripting.it was so much fun that some still believed they were programming really.then say that you can not make a code for a foreign language of its purposes, is totally irrelevant.depending on the cases, what you want to do is much simpler than creating an audiogame.

Re: I'm looking for a decent laptop, any suggestions?

hi Omar,I agree with you 100% on ultrabooks. My friends keep bugging me to get an ultrabook instead of a regular laptop for my next machine, however, I don't want a machine that has inferior performance, and which is underpowered, to my current toshiba satallite l50A. Having said that, I will touch on a topic noone has talked about in this topic. Intel has done a refresh of their processors. The current eighth gen processers double the cores in the underpowered U processors to four. Additionally, the i7 can overclock to 4.20 GHZ, which is insane on a 15 watt processor. Technology sites are talking about a 75% performance boosts in some tasks, while the general boost is around 40% for other tasks. I can't imagine what the H processors will be like with this new gen of processors. My recommendation would be to wait until the eighth gen processors become more common, and buy one, since the performance boosts are rather massive.

Re: Ride, new code editor for blinds

@Ethin@22if this possibility existed for the creation of graphic interfaces inbgt, would you still say that this would be a problem?Because then the existence of commands that produce dialog boxes andinput boxes?autoit is by no means a programming language and can dographical interfaces.the game operation blacksqware was made with it, totally out of thepurposes for which the autoit was done.I've seen a kind of "keylogger" done simply in autohotkey.the code itself may not be anything malicious, but behaves like thisfrom the point of view of those who observe its functioning.so let's face it: creativity overcomes any limit.if it is not in bgt, maybe it will be in conjunction with another tool.but that is not necessarily why people need atrue programming language to do things.we will arrive at a point where anyone will be able to program acomputer and develop its ease.It is only to see how the specific languages for a certain task arebeing used.I can create a song in bgt and this need not necessarily bethe music of a game.I can create a simple sound mixer where I can adjust pitch and pan, yetwhich runs ogg or wav files. Is there a problem with that?I'm already preparing a "code formater" in bgt for my personal use.it will convert already tiped single blocks of code to a well-indented code andvice versa.may not be useful for you, but for me it will help me a lot.and sorry, but you certainly did not come from the MS-DOS era when youprogrammatically using bat scripting.it was so much fun that some still believed they were programmingreally.then say that you can not make a code for a foreign languageof its purposes, is totally irrelevant.depending on the cases, what you want to do is much simpler thancreating an audiogame.

Re: Code 7 Episode 1 Looking for testers

Sorry for not answering for a few days.. let me give all of you an answer here in the following lines.Musicfairy .. great to hear that you got through the game without further help. Did you use the new labyrinth version to get through or did it just happen eventually through trial and error?Rtt ... I‘m not sure where you are. There are several spots where you have to disable a light barrier, but none where you have to find a key, I think. The word „it“ seems to be a challenge for the sapi voice. We‘ve been trying around a lot but it just can‘t get it right. Sorry, but we weren‘t able to fix that. Thanks for all the reports. We‘ll try to fix these in the next version.Sam is voiced by Jessica Carol and Zoya is voiced by Dianna Conley .crashmaster .. after you get that message about the pathway being almost clear you only need one more rotation, but you have to walk to a specific position first. The sapi voice will say that in the release version.

Re: I'm looking for a decent laptop, any suggestions?

Heya all,I can not thank you guys enough for the feedback posted. So far the most recommended line of machines are latitude. I actually had a latitude e6410) and rather loved it. The battery life was something beyond this planet. With an ssd and even on high performance on windows 7, I got somewhere between 11 to 14 hours. Then again it was a 9S battery, not sure of the capacity though.I don't know if you guys missed it, however I still do not know if any of these recommendations have audio enhancements that are not easy to disable. Well one, actually.Acer I'm avoiding like the plague though, until I have great reason to know the quality control issues are as good as, say, what dell used to have. I've heard way too many horror stories to risk a very large investment. I'm not trying to offend you there, just saying what's on my mind about Acer. The dell consumer versions of the business models are absolute terrible plastic piles of garbage that run oven hot. That said, I would never recommend going into a big box store and purchasing a laptop there anyway. You never really know what your getting unless you research in advance, however that begs the question, do they have the laptop you want in stock by the time you arrive? And yo, lenovo x260. I want!By the way, I did get the chance to check out a lenovo yoga something. It's a tiny thing, slim enough to make even a macbook air jealous. And the battery life and performance are about as good. And yes, it does have a touch screen which is really fun to play with NVDA. The machine belongs to a friend of mine so, I will be returning it back to her tomorrow. Thanks guys!

Depends on which platform you have.. but 2 is the best game overall. Three was a little slow and balance wasn't at great, same with 4. 2 and 5 are my personal favourites.

Re: I'm looking for a decent laptop, any suggestions?

if you want good laptops you should defenetlly look at the latitude series. they are really good and i've owned 2 so far. my current is latitude 5480, a 14inch laptop but it still kicks ass with both graphic card, a CPU at 2.8ghz eather i5 or i7, if you choos i7 you can get a higher speed i believe. 8 or 16gb ddr4 ram. the bennefits with the latitudes are that you can configure them as you want. unfortunattly i've found that some parts like keyboard starts to slowly brake but they are still very good.

Re: Treasure Islands

I'm designing the program to make the inclusion of missions easier to add. The technical part is recognising certain events and being able to script missions so that events trigger the next step. I'm leaning towards the player navigating in hyperspace, like in Babylon 5. So you steer towards a hyperspace beacon which brings you back into normal space when reached. That way, I can include a beacon, or directional sound, for a distant target location. But it's just an idea at the moment. When making a long trip, you would have to re-enter normal space to refuel.I may also be able to add wormhole shortcuts through space.
