Re: Is the HomePod really worth it?

Your local music just has to be accessible on your network, IE on a NAS. In my case I just have a hard drive hooked up to a raspberry pi running Samba and have my music and other audio like books on there. Then in the Sonos app you just add any folders you want it to scan (which can also just include folders on your computer although then obviously it'll have to be on for the music to be playable) and it'll go out and index them. Then you can browse and search them either by the usual tags like artist, album, genre, or browse by folder which is great if your music isn't tagged well or you are picky about the way you organise stuff. Then you can set any folder to be played in sequence or shuffled. The Sonos app can also stream any Music from an iPhone or Android. On that note of buying the Sonos One, I'd absolutely recommend grabbing one if you're looking into getting a voice assistant, but aren't sure which one will work better for you. Because Sonos is an audio company first and formost, the speaker sounds great, and you can use either Alexa or Google Assistant (which is coming this spring) in one speaker and just go back and forth between them.

Re: Does Anyone Know Where I Can Find an Accessible Speakandspell Imulator

New MameUI builds are still being released along with regular mame. You should be able to find them further down the downloads page, though unless you want to start a huge collection of games that you'd want to filter, getting that is probably more trouble than it's worth considering it's quite a bit larger and takes some time to do a ROM scan. But if you want to play a lot of games, or configure advanced options for a system without reading up on advanced command line parameters and making INI files, than it might be useful for you.

Re: Is the HomePod really worth it?

I just invested a a bunch of money into a Sonos systwem, because it sounds good, can play both local music as well as connect to pretty much every external service, adjust its sound with a little help and can integrate with voice assistants.Siri is a joke. Siri on the homepod is an even more worse joke because it can't do some of the things it can on the phone. The problem with it is that Apple waisted a massive headstart they had over everyone else by serious mismanagement of all the staff they acquired, so most of them left in frustration. And when they started to expand it, they did it only in a bad, overly controlled way Apple can by making it work only in specific contexts that would prioritise their services (You can call an Uber or Order food with Siri, but there is currently no API to play music from other apps, probably to drive people to Apple Music). In contrast, when Google or even Cortana added app integration they have no such restrictions. As for which assistant is better, right now Google's better at answering general knowledge questions, while Alexa has more skills over all, for instance when it comes to Home integration. Google wants to add support for 30 new languages just this year and already have a few more that Amazon doesn't. Amazon's hardware is a little more versatile, All echos have a line out jack so you can connect it to a better sounding speaker. You can also connect an Echo do a better speaker over bluetooth. In comparison, only the most expensive Home Max has a line in jack. You can use any of the Google homes  as a Bluetooth speaker but your only option to connect it up to better speakers is using Google Cast over Wi-Fi. This really cripples the Home mini in my opinion because if I want to connect it to something more powerful I would also need to buy a Chrome cast audio, which is another thing I have to spend $30 on and plug into power. This is why I haven't bought either an Echo or Home. Alexa already has Sonos integration, but Google assistant is also coming, and with that the Sonos might also get Google cast support. If it does, I'll buy a Home mini. If it doesn't then I'll probably get an Echo Dot.As for the homepod... Well you get none of that. Your only 2 audio output possibilities right now are playing from Apple music, or playing audio from an iDevice or Mac over Airplay. Even though the HomePod has Bluetooth, you can't use it for anything, and it has no connectors on it other than the power cable. Meanwhile, Airplay 2, which is supposed to let the Homepod do the stuff everyone else can, like pairing 2 of them in a stereo configuration or setting up multiroom audio, is not out yet and has been delayed for a few months so far. Meanwhile, Sonos will be getting Airplay 2 as well which is one more reason why I think it's such a superior choice to a homepod.

The reason for this problem was already explained by others. One way you can fix it with something like Silenzio From Stefan Kiss of Eurofly faim. This is a tiny program that hides in your system tray whose only job is to keep your soundcards audio channel open, exactly for the reason you're running into as it's quite common with some laptops and especially Bluetooth headsets.

I personally like Emoji, because they make the visual side of communication more accessible to us because they're so common. People will often choose to send an emoji rather than a sticker, and then you don't have to feel left out or like you're looking stupid for asking what someone just sent you. This works in the other direction too, I'll often sent sighted people emoji to express emotion, because I actually know what I'm sending (well, for the most part anyway). They also make icons more accessible. Quite often, developers will use an emoji to label a link or button on a website. Stuff like down arrows to indicate dropdown menus, magnifying glasses for search, thimbs up/down for like and dislike on comment systems, it's getting quite common

Re: winamp woes, please help

I switched to Foobar from Winap a few years ago and like it. Not saying you should switch now that you got your winamp problem fixed. That being said if you ever decide to try it out it can do everything you want. For playing game music, you have the fooGEP plugin, which does work with RSN files as well as VGZ, NSF and all the other common chipTune formats, plus a few other plugins to complement it like the DUM module decoder (That's D U M) for Amiga/other tracker modules, fooSid for C64, and there's also one for gameboy advance and Nintendo DS.The UI is super simple. If you don't have any folders configured for the library, the only thing you'll see in the window is a tab switcher to switch playlists (each playlist is a tab like in a web browser), a list with file information for the currently playing file, and another list which contains your playlist. That being said, if you decide to add a library the itnerface for that also simple, adding just 3 more things to the window, a combo box to set how the library is sorted (including an option just to show the folders), a search box, and a tree which actually contains the library sorted by whatever you picked. It also has a CD wripper feature which can pull information from Online databases for track information and a file converter. The one drawback to foobar is that it takes a while to customize. A common source of frustration is the hotkeys. Because by default, there aren't any set up, so you need to manually go and add some yourself. So you can totally make it feel like Winamp if you like.

Re: What TV show/movie are you watching aka recommendation and reviews

I don't watch all that much TV right now, though I really should because my list of things I need to catch up on is getting quite long. Red Dwarf seasons 11 and 12, probably wanna finish Doctor Who, The Punnisher on Netflix because I really enjoyed his appearance on Daredevil, and I really need to watch Futurama as multiple people have recommended it to me.All that being said, I've been focusing on 2 series right now both of which are now on break. Star Trek Discovery and The Orville. Both of which cause polarising opinions. Generally, Crytics love Discovery but don't care much for Orville, while fans are the opposite. Personally, I've enjoyed both. For Discovery, I like it so far, maybe because I'm a DS9 fan. It has its Meh moments, I don't much care for the way the Klingons sound. Almost everybody has all this processing on their voices, it sounds more like Goauld from Stargate than Klingons from other star trek series. The music isn't particularly memorable either. But for all of that the plot is pretty interesting, and some of the more dark moments are pretty cool like the way Harry Mud is portrayed stands out in particular. It's definitely one to watch, the whole series is described on Netflix... If you're not in the US or Canada at least. Then there's The Orville. I dragged my feet on this one because I heard it was being written by the guy responsible for Family guy which I never really got into, plus it was pretty hard to watch overhere. But many people started saying it's more serious than you might think, and that if you love Trek you'll love Orville... So I finally sat down to watch it and ended up binging the 9 episodes that were out then in 2 days. It's pretty clear it's a Trek Omage, but it's done very well and does a lot to stand out. Yes, there's jokes, but they never overstay their welcome. It makes the characters feel more human if anything, just the bridge crew joking around to relieve stress. It's never implied that they're not good at their jobs. Plus, like Star Trek, the episodes tackle some pretty serious problems. One of the first episodes has one of the crew members, who's from a predominently male species, give birth to a female which almost never happens and if it does is considered a birth defect, so the child has to undergo a sex change. Obviously, the rest of the mostly human crew are shocked when they hear this, and want to prevent this from happening. I don't want to spoil the rest of the episode but that's the kind of thing you can expect from this. Plus, the soundtrack is actually memorable. It's fully orchestrated, like the previous Star Trek series. Compare this to discovery which sounds like every superhero movie ever with a lot of dark pads and synth bass and mostly centering around the rediculously overused D-minor chord.

Re: First signs of IE becoming unusable?

Microsoft Edge already more or less works with screen readers. Both NVAccess and Freedom Scientific are working with Microsoft on Edge accessibility (they literarly have meetings every few months to discuss Windows Accessibility). The reason it's not yet anywhere as polished as Chrome, Firefox or IE is that for Edge, Microsoft has started doing what Apple has been for a while and making the screen reader do less of the work, relying more on the Operating system and the browser to make websites accessible. It's a big change from the virtual buffor aproach that has been used for the last 18 years or so. Once everyone has gotten used to working this way it will work much better with modern apps that now try very hard to feel like normal applications.Marco Zehe who works with Mozilla did a far better job explaining this and his post is absolutely worth a read if you're curious why Edge support is taking as long as it is to get right.

Re: First signs of IE becoming unusable?

@bookrage consider either updating your JAWS if possible, or using NVDA. Then you'll find both Chrome and Firefox to work quite well (I use Chrome with JAWS 18 on occasion, so I know for a fact it works)Microsoft has basically put IE on life support at this point. The only thing they're probably going to do is patching security vulnerabilities. However, while IE has now stopped, the web certainly hasn't. A lot of things that iE used to need external plugins for, like video playback, are now handled by built-in features of the browsers. And this is good, both for accessibility and also for security and performance and battery life. IE used to be really famous for doing things in very nonstandard ways (IE the way it displayed webpages and processed CSS stylesheets), which developers had to hack around. Not much changed in that aspect because now they have to hack in functionality that isn't natively supported. But this is very time consuming and not always possible, so while you see big sites like all Google products or Facebook still work, although not very fast, many smaller sites may not have the time or resources to kater to a web browser which is very rapidly shrinking in popularity.

For combo boxes, try going into focus mode with nvda+space, then tabbing away from and back onto the list. This is a bit flaky. I also just tried this again and now it looks as though they now work much better, so I would also suggest you try out the very latest release of NVDA (2017.4RC as of this post) because it looks like some fixes were implemented.Glad you're enjoying Chrome. If you're concerned about privacy it's worth mentioning that you don't have to sign into your Google account to use it. You can also turn off browser history on your Google privacy settings if you just want your bookmarks synced. If that isn't enough, because the Chromium/blink engine that powers Chrome is open-source, you don't have to use the official Google Chrome app. There's apps like Ungoogle Chromium, which keeps the stock UI, as well as apps like Vivaldi and Opera that are their own thing and have additional features like a reader view or built-in ad blocking

Living in Poland in 1800 would suck... For starters, Poland didn't even exist in 1800 after literarly getting torn into 3 pieces occupied by Prussia, Austria and Russia respectively in prior years. So, I would predict that someone would take the internet enabled phone I arrived with, and eventually figure it out. This would lead to them being able to predict the future and all of the uprisings that were coming up. If they convinced the higher ups that this is indeed true, those uprisings would probably get prevented leading to Russia becoming a superpower with less conflict then it actually took. That is unless the situation didn't result in tearing of the spacetime continuum first.

Re: why can't you use asio with a screen reader?

What it comes down to is that Windows Audio sucks. It especially did on older versions, anything up to XP was limited and normally had a lot of delay. So a bunch of audio hardware manufacturers came up with their own standard, ASIO. Which is separate from the audio capabilities of Windows. Which is when we come to your question, this is why you can't have a screen reader going through a device that's being used for ASIO. Because when a device is being used in ASIO mode by a DAW, Windows can't access it. The only way you can fix this is either using a different audio mode, like wasapi on Windows 7 or newer, and if it's still too laggy you will need a second soundcard for your screen reader

After you do, Hit JAWS+Tab to see what the box says. When it says search using Google, you're good. You can also just open Firefox settings and change your default engine from there (tools>options). Re: Anybody using USB keyboards here?

If you use a USB keyboard made for Windows, you won't have to use Sharpkeys to remap the modifiers. The Alt and Windows keys will be in their correct places in Windows. In fact you'll probably have to undo the modifications you made using SharpKeys for this to be the case, though this will cause your built-in keyboard's modifiers to be swapped and I am not aware of any way to change the modifiers on Windows just for 1 keyboard. On the Mac side, the keys will be reversed at first (that is alt will be option and Windows will be command), but Mac OS has its own modifier remapping feature in system preferences that you can configure independently for each keyboard. So on Mac you can swap the modifiers without effecting the built-in keyboard.

PSA: NVDA is dropping XP support

As described in this NVAccess blog post NVDA 2017.3 will be the last version to support older versions of Windows (that is Windows XP, Vista, and 7 before SP1). So, if you're using an older computer or chose not to upgrade Windows, now might be a good time to think about doing so. Of course this doesn't mean NVDA will just flat out stop working, 2017.3 will continue to work and you will still be able to download it from the NVAccess site. So you shouldn't see anything breakBut as time goes on you can expect things to slowly no longer work, any enhancements made to web accessibility standards won't be supported, so newer sites may not work as well with this older NVDA, and ad-on compatibility will definitely have to be considered. There are rumours of NVDA finally moving to Python 3, and once that happens it's likely many ad-ons won't work with NVD
A 2017.3 if not written with compatibility in mind.

If you have Windows 10 you could try using the Ubuntu that comes in WSL, which is much easier to set up and probably ends up being smaller. All that being said, yes, we stream from residential internet just like most amateur internet radio broadcasters. But we don't run our ice cast server on the  same computer that we use for streaming. Our Liquidsoap installation is running on a dedicated Linux server hosted by OVH which handles the ice cast as well as the website and a lot of other things. LiquidSoap is running on there 24-7, continuously playing archives and if it detects one of us connecting to a specific address, it switches to rebroadcasting that. If you wanted to do the same thing from your Home Windows computer, it would have to run 24 hours a day if you don't want your stream interrupted and you'd need a really decent upload to support multiple listeners. If you're planning to stream to a remote iceCast server, if you can administrate
it yourself install Liquidsoap on it or ask whoever owns it to do it for you. Otherwise, consider doing that yourself or even geet something like a raspberry  pi and run your icecast and liquid soap off of it.

My sister had one, but I didn't know it at the time. It wasn't even a typical famicom, it was a dance mat which just had 2 sets of drawn arrows on it that I guess represented a dPad. It had the dancing game obviously, with I think only 2 or 3 songs, plus what I think was a pinball mini-game. It was pretty cheaply made as I recall our parents complaining about picking up interference on the TV in the other room when it was on. The music was all in the style someone mentioned earlier, with a lot of vibrato and drums on the noise channel that managed to both sound heavy and hollow at the same time. I don't remember all the songs on it, except The ketchup song which was on it for some reason. Finally, it had the typical Chinese multicart menu selection noise on it so I'm pretty sure it was a famiclone in disguise. For anyone that finds this Chinese stuff interesting, definitely check out vine sauce on
YouTube, specifically the channels of Vinnie and Joel. Vinnie in particular streams a lot of these cheep plug n' plays under the "plug n' plague" name, though there are a few older videos before he came up with that name. There's some wonderful stuff there as well. Also, Ashens does a lot of Chinese consoles on his channel too, including a massive pop station watch series that you should look at. He reviewed a PolyStation as well but it was quite different to what you described in post 1.

Accessibility wise, I miss the rotor actions, but other than that the interface feels much faster especially if scrolling through large, busy chats.Visually, the new Skype is trying to kind of be like SnapChat, there 's a lot of emphasis on sending pictures, making public highlights of your day, and of course huge emojis. Because everyone's doing that now. A lot of things were thrown out as a result, IE the concept of various statuses like On-line or away, but because of a rather large backlash they r slowly making a comeback as part of the new design. All that aside, using it for calls isn't very hard at all. When you open the app, you land on a screen showing your most recent chats (which also includes outgoing or missed calls). On pretty much every screen you always have a "people" button at the top that opens your contact list. So you just double-tap that, then you
can just flick through all your contacts to find the one you want, and double-tap on him/her which will open the chat with that person. And one of the first things on the chat screen is the button to make a call. Also, Skype has full support for CallKit and Siri integration. So, if your Wife's phone runs iOS 10, if you go into the phone app you will be able to see any missed and outgoing Skype calls on the recents tab, just as if it was a regular phonecall, and you can return them from here as well. You can also make calls just by finding a contact in the phone app, and if they set up their phone number with Skype you'll see an option to make a Skype call next to regular phone and FaceTime options. And finally, you can use Siri voice commands to make Skype calls or send chats. The commands for it are pretty much what you'd expect, Call "Dark" on Skype, or, Skype "dark" should all work and just make the call.

If you mean the old note takers that are Windows Based, as far as I know yes, there is an SDK. But it was only available on request and you first had to demonstrate that you know how to program to obtain it. I read this. years ago on a Polish site specialising in AT news. For the Polaris, you shouldn't need one as it's Android based so you can just program using the standard Android SDK.

2017-07-20 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Is there something unusual about Using Audio Games in IEon Windows 10?

UIA stands for UI automation. It's basically the successor to MSAA, Microsoft Active Accessibility. If you don't know what that is, it's the part of the operating system that applications like Screen Readers can use to figure out what's on the screen, rather than asking the video card which is how it used to work in the 90's. That's an oversimplification, but the main point is any updates Microsoft makes to UIA will have a large effect on how fast and well your screen reader performs, especially NVDA, System Access and Narrator and to a lesser extent JAWS or any other commertial Screen Reader.@Dark that's why I thought of the resolution thing, many new websites are now designed to adapt to smaller or larger screens, doing things like hiding their menus behind a button or moving things around. Many things can cause your screen resolution to be lowered, IE badly installed graphics card drivers or screen readers messing with video intercept s
upport. As far as Firefox goes, no browser just exposes its favourites folder like that anymore. That being said, you can manage your bookmarks in the dialog in a similar way as managing them in Windows Explorer. You can drag them on-top of folders, but you can also use Cut and Paste hotkeys (CTRL+X/CTRL+V) to move them in and out of folders (I just tried this to confirm if it works). That just leaves backup, and you can do that in a few ways. You can copy your FireFox profile, or just use FireFox sync which will upload them to a private account that you can sign into on multiple computers or even the iOS Firefox app.Anyway, whatever works works I guess. Though there are probably going to be a lot of games coming out now using new Web API's that Internet Explorer just won't support (DarkDefender is one and I'm testing 2 more that will probably come out soon).Personally, I would actually switch to Chrome, but I'll freely admit that its UI is ve
ry different from Internet explorer so that would make for a jarring experience. Thankfully all the hotkeys are more or less the same.

Re: Is Audio Games Forum Compatible with IE on Windows 10

Whatever this is, it seems to be related to responsive design of this forum somehow. What your describing is something I get when accessing the forum on iOS. While I haven't been able to see the additional user info, I can expand the navigation area by clicking on the "audiogames.net forum" link at the top of the page so this may work for you on IE. Also, go into your display settings and make sure your screen resolution is set to its highest option supported by your laptop/monitor. If it's too small it may cause the forunm to think you have a small screen and switch to the mobile format. Failing that, consider  switching web browsers, probably to firefox as it has a similar menu layout to IE's and every screen reader now supports it just as well unless you're extremely out of date. Downgrading to Windows 7 just because of this issue is definitely overkill IMO, as Windows 10 does offer some advantages, including under the hood improvements to thi
ngs like UIA that make screen readers more responsive in some applications, that's beside things like the awesome OCR engine that NVDA will support in the next version along with the image description features coming to Narrator in the fall update.

There were 2 versions there was a fuller one with more instruments as well as an 8-bit remix and that's the one in Beep.

2017-04-28 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: usb mike muting computer

That might be very well what's happening, and Windows has the tendency of switching to a new sound device if it finds one. The good news is that once you tell it to use something else, it will remember that choice and as long as the microphone will be plugged into the same USB port this won't happen again even if you unplug it and plug it back in. Fwiw you'd get the same thing happening on Windows XP.Now about fixing the problem. First of all, some microphones may have a headphone jack on them that you can use to hear what the Mic is picking up, or what Windows sends to it, so look for one and if you find it just plug your headphones in so you can hear your speech to change your Windows device. If it doesn't have one, plug it into your computer and change the sound card that NVDA goes through. This is actually easier than it sounds, even without speech. Just press CTRL+NVDA+S to bring up the synthesizer dialog, wait a second to make sure it came up
, tab once to the output device combo box, press down arrow, and enter. You will either get speech back or not. If you don't, just repeat those 4 keys again until you do.Now that you have speech you'll probably want to change your audio device in Windows away from the microphone, at least for playback. To do that, you need to get to the "sound" setting of control panel (searching in the start menu, either with classic shell or the normal Windows 10 one should find it). In the sound dialog, make sure you're on the playback tab, and go through the list of devices to find the default soundcard of your Computer. It will most likely say something to the effect of "speakers/headphones Realtek/Intel HD audio). Once you do, tab to the "set default" button and press it. And now you'll most likely lose speech again because of how NVDA internally figures out what device is what. So once again like in the beginning, hit CTRL+NVDA+S, tab once, p
ress home and then enter. This will put NVDA's soundcard back on "Microsoft Sound Mapper" which will just make NVDA use whatever Windows uses. You should only have to do this once.

Yeah, Season 7 wasn't too memorable for me either, though it definitely had its moments like the Pipe thing Dark described or when Kriten crashed a holographic tea  party with a World War 2 tank to announce dinner was ready. In regards to British Humor, I find I seem to enjoy British Commedies a lot more than US sitcoms. Apart from Red Dwarf I also watched Fawlty Towers which, even though is now a rather old series got quite a few laughs out of me while on the US side apart from animated stuff like Simpsons or Family Guy I didn't find American Sitcoms like Friends, I love Lucy, family matters or how I met your mother particularly interesting. On the topic of the US and Red Dwarf, they tried to Americanise the series, which only got as far as This Pilot episode  which is probably worth watching if you're a fan of the series. It also features Robert Llewellyn reprising his role as Kriten.

Reading Witcher in English in the correct chronological Order isn't completely possible, as not every book has been translated. But anyway, you first need to read the shortstories, starting with "the last wish" which was actually released later but chronologically comes first. Then, you'd need to read the season of storms, but as far as I know it hasn't yet received an English translation. Then read the sword of destiny shortstories and you can finally start reading the Saga, in the order they were released. This reddit post basically summarizes what I just said so you can reference it as well.HTH!

Oh yesz Red Dwarf. I first listened to the Dectalk transcripts, and then watched the actual series, at least up to Season 10.  It and Star Trek were the first 2 SCI-Fi series that I really got into and what made me love the genre so much.My favourite seasons are probably 2, 3, 4 and 6, at least those are the ones where I can remember the most episodes. I found Season 8 to be somewhat confusing and not too interesting, it was cool that the writers tried to bring Red Dwarf (as in the Ship, crew and all) back, but I didn't find it too memorable. Well OK apart from the moment when Rimmer punches death in the face in the last episode. Season 9 likewise wasn't that great, and felt really empty because they decided not to add a live audience laugh track.Possible Season 10 spoilers[/quote wrote:Season 10 though was really cool and was basically going back to the roots of the series with the
usual crew Minus Holly on the Red Dwarf, back with a laugh track doing things that would go wrong in a typical RD fassion, like constructing a new ship AI which decided that everyone was not competent enough to control the ship or incorrectly assembling an Ikea space shower causing them to travel back in time. So I'm really optimistic that Season 11 will be just as good. I need to get around to watching it soon.

Seeing I don't live anywhere close to the UK I haven't tried the app, but I would suggest you give it a try as there isn't much of a risk of accidentaly placing an unwanted order. If it's anything like similar apps/websites in Poland, and any shop for that matter really, it'd be pretty hard to pay for something you don't want. There's usually some kind of confirmation screen that  will clearly list what's going to be in your order, including quantities and prices, as well as options to select a payment method. And assuming even if you do click pay now, if you use a method like bank transfer or paypal you still have to go through the website of that company. So that's one more place where you can just back out.

2017-03-20 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Google mail and security to stupid levels!

This is definitely an incredibly useful feature, one that many companies now implement. You will get a similar situation with Microsoft and Facebook. So I definitely have to disagree with this being a waist of time.As for your comment that you usually wouldn't have to deal with it on a phone, or with other services where you're often changing locations, you aren't ask to reverify a Gmail account if you travel, and this is due to the fact there are 2 authorisation methods in use today. The first, more modern which is in-use by iOS, Android, the Gmail app or the modern Windows 10 "mail" application is by asking Google for authorisation tokens. You can recognise this method by the fact that after you tell your Email application you are signing into a Gmail account, it will open a Google log in page where after entering your Gmail address and password you will get  a prompt saying "Application X wants to have access to the Email on this
account" with an "allow" button. At that point, Google sends back what's called a token, a random string of characters, which will from then on be used every time by the application whenever it wants to do something. This is very secure, because the application never even sees what your password is, so if you get your phone or laptop stolen you can just go on the Google site and ask them to invalidate that token which will cut off access. And these tokens will remain valid until you delete them yourself either from the Google security settings or by logging out in the application. They are also not affected by your IP address changing. I have traveled quite a lot between different countries, and was never asked to sign in again on my phone, Mac or Windows 10 mail app which all use these tokens. That long explanation out of the way we come to the second, older method of accessing Gmail, which is over the Imap protocol. That's what you're going to b
e using if you use an app like Outlook express, Thunderbird, Windows Mail or older versions of Outlook (Office 2016 may support the new token system, though I have never used Office Outlook for Email so don't quote me on this). You can recognise this by the fact that you just get 2 edit boxes for your user name and Password and are never directed to the Google page to sign in. So, in this case, every time the Email program wants to do anything, it has to send the username and Password to Google. This in turn is treated as a new Log in every time which is why it considered it suspicious activity. One last thing, Google accounts are not used just for Email access. You can store your calendar or contacts there. You could possibly have payment information on file, or store sensitive information in the Google keep notebook. And just like an Apple ID can be used to manage an iPhone, Android phones can be remotely locked with a security code or wiped from the google account they
are signed into. So having such a system in place means that even if some Russian hackers can figure out your password, they wouldn't be able to do anything.

Re: Supernova disappointments

This probably makes the achievements of NVAccess all the more impressive which has been only funded through community support and the occasional grant to do X and Y (this is why you see NVDA versions for long amounts of time concentrating on fixing one thing, Office, Adobe reader or most recently Kindle).I do wonder if what Supernova is gaining now is dictated by their current user base. There would be 2 parts to this, the first involving things like the pod catchers and access to magazines and things of that sort for people that may not know how to use the internet as well, so mostly older people. But then isn't that what Dolphin Guide was designed for? I'm not sure if that's still receiving any updates or not. The second part to the user base thing is how many users are blind, so use the screen reader, and how many are low vision and focus on the magnification? Making a magnifier is definitely easier to do and maybe Super Nova is perfectly adept at h
andling Modern Windows 10 apps if you look at it from that point of view. On that note, support for touch screens has existed in JAWS, Narrator and NVDA for a while now and last I heard about Super Nova in that aspect was touch gestures being supported... Only for the magnifier portion. And this was back in 2012 or 2013.

Re: Supernova disappointments

To an extent, the Dolphin rep was right. Windows 10 does use the new web rendering engine that was developed for Microsoft Edge, though it's really not too much of an excuse. One thing that could definitely trip up older screen readers in Windows 8 and newer is that due to increased security you can't just scrape the screen anymore. So if you go into a modern app, and then go into the JAWS cursor or nvda's flat review, it will just show a blank screen and I suspect the Dolphin Cursor would do likewise. The thing is, all the modern API's to get the screen content, mostly UIA and MSAA for older software, will still work fine. This is why NVDa or JAWS work fine with the more modern windows parts, because for them scraping the screen is now a secondary means of screen reading. It did seem like Super nova was behind everyone else in that aspect, I heard from someone once that Super Nova stopped reading critical parts of the screen after a sighted person change
d the Windows 7 visual theme to something other than Windows Classic. In the late 90's, when Microsoft wasn't implementing their own accessibility API's this could happen because screen readers  were looking for specific graphics and colourrs to track the focus or figure out what kind of control something is. But if you hear something like that in 2014 or whenever it was well, that means there's something wrong.Honestly every Screen Reader now days has problems. Window-eyes has been slowly rotting away after the VFO Ai-squared merge and I won't be surprised if they just give people jaws licenses and migrate everyone over. Everything has issues, even NVDA which is why I'm really happy narrator is making as much progress as it is (braille, talking Windows install, web support in edge actually starting to feel good, etc). If I had to choose the best Screen Readers we have now it'd have to be NVDA, JAWS and Narrator. They're all good a
t different things - JAWS is occasionally faster than NVDA IE on the web, but is more invasive in the system, NVDA tends to occasionally freeze up if an app becomes unresponsive or a website has a lot of scripts on it, while Narrator just needs a bit more polish with its web support and how it reads certain controls. But if it keeps its rate of changes up I might very well see myself switching to it in the next year or 2.

What the last 2 posts said. I'll just add that no, there aren't any accessories to add a second SIM to an iPhone, and there won't be any simply because iOS was never designed for this so no API's exist for this purpose. That being said Apple has proposed an electronic SIM standard, which is already in use on the high-end iPad Pro's which may potentially help doing what you want. But it'll be a long time if ever until this comes to a new iPhone, and even if it does I'm not sure there will be a feature to keep multiple SIM's active at the same time.

In actuality they don't offer virtual surround. They're a USb only headset, and the microphone sounds a little boxy (you can find samples on YouTube) though I've certainly heard worse. What really sells them IMO is the sound quality of the headphones themselves, which for the price is really nice and comparable to way more expensive headphones (I did get to try them personally) as well as the comfort (I'm usually not a fan of over the ear cans because of how tight the cups usually are causing a lot of discomfort. The sades have very large and soft cans and I'm pretty sure I could use them for long amounts of time if I had to. So if you don't mind the fact it's a USB only headset, considering it costs about $30 it's really not a bad option.

I'm pretty sure you can. I haven't done this myself but I saw websites making available public google calendars that, after following a link, would then give you an option to subscribe to it. I would imagine that you can make a private calendar in a similar way, then send out invitations and give those people write access.

Re: What voice you use with NVDA?

I also use Eloquence, though I'm using one of the older add-ons not modified by Jake. I tried them and although they can go much faster and you have more voice options, they have some big problems when indexing or spelling which often results in text either being ran together or randomly stopping mid-sentence. Then for other languages I purchased the Tiflotecnia vocalizer expressive Driver where I use a handful of voices.

Re: Facebook Accessibility Really Sucks

2017-02-03 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Facebook Accessibility Really Sucks

Got a bunch of things to talk about here so let's see if I can organize them in some fassion.First of all, I'm surprised no one here mentioned any of the keyboard shortcuts on the facebook page (I believe pressing the question mark key opens a list). You will need your browse mode off for these to do anything. Anyway, using J and K you can read through your news feed, L likes a post, O opens any links that may be in one and C jumps to the comment box. Finally, you can also press P to jump to the what's on your mind? box to make a new post. I just tried to find it manually with nvda and firefox and it's there, but for some reason Facebook has now put all of the posting controls into a dialogue and NVDA doesn't focus controls inside nested elements if you use quick navigation keys. But if you were to go to the heading for the news feed, then move up, it will say dialogue and if you then press enter you can get to it manually.NVDA  vs JAWS
on facebook... Yeah, JAWS does seem to work a bit better. But I'm going to put most of the blaim here on Firefox. The new versions are really awful and slow, I had sighted people tell me that scrolling the page was unresponsive on this I7-6700 while doing a Google search with no screen reader running. With NVDA, which is written in python (a slower interpreted language) this is made worse. On sites with a lot of _javascript_, I always get tons of lag, on Youtube, any news sites, and with facebook it becomes really obvious. If I'm scrolling down the news feed, The browser often freezes for long enough that Windows gets confused and considers FF not responding. Sometimes, it might not keep up with NVDA and scroll into a comment box 2 or 3 posts up which makes NVDA go into focus mode even if I don't want it to. And when I'm writing, whenever auto complete tries to work it also causes firefox to go not responding which produces a lt of speech. With JAWS, I still ge
t the moments of not responding firefox if I'm typing and autocomplete pops up, but there's almost no lag when navigating and I don't get randomly jumping focus. So, if you want to use NVDA with the desktop facebook site, use Chrome, hel, use Chrome for just about everything and you'll be surprised how much faster it is, remember your Facebook hotkeys, and you should be good. Sadly the FB page is still extremely cluttered and the more advanced things you can do are still frustrating to do just because of how  much crap there is on the page.As for the API, the main reason FB doesn't want people to just make straight up clients for facebook or Messenger is because they lose control over it. They can't push promoted stories, auto-playing ads, stupid "show off your day" sections that really have no place in a chatting application IMO, etc, because a custom client could just filter them and FB couldn't do a thing about it. We
ll, sort of, because they just killed the API and that was that.

Re: Windows 10, hopefully a decision I won't regret

Absolutely. No one is stopping you from going into Program Files, or installing applications under different folders (in fact, if you do then Windows won't block programs from writing to them.Program Files is considered to be a system folder. You can still get into it as well as view and open files. If you create or paste a new one, then you will just get a warning from explorer that you need to be an administrator to move things around but you always get a continue button. For applications they can see files in it if they're not an admin, they just can't change them. If there's something that you need to allow messing with Program Files then you simply tell Windows to always run it as an administrator which I explained a few posts back.

I believe so. My guess is Dolphin is just keeping it working for the few people that still use it who in term don't need or possibly don't know any better. I know 3 people that use Super Nova now. Dark is one, then there's Andre Louis who also tought himself NVDA if something breaks, and James Bowden who works at Dolphin. If you go on the Dolphin site and look at the "changelog" for Version 16, there really isn't much to look at. They only advertise that they now have a new Dolphin Pen with enhanced magnification which doesn't need administrator rights to run, plus the redesigned control panel. Do you seee what's missing here? Any mention of bug fixes or improvements to screen reading. Before I'm accused of bashing or starting an SR flame war, I'm not trying to. Though I have to wonder how long Dolphin can keep this up before they lose any users they may have left. Microsoft is only going to speed up the rate they chan
ge Windows and sooner or later Internet explorer will reach end of life.

Re: Windows 10, hopefully a decision I won't regret

At this point, UAC really isn't an issue. And for the occasional program where it is you can just go into the properties for the file and tell it to always run as administrator on the compatibility tab. There's 2 ways of turning off UAC. The first is setting the notification level to 0 in the UAC settings which is the Microsoft recommended option. This doesn't turn UAC off, it just always grants permissions to a program if it asks for it without asking you first (so basically it works as if you hit yes every time an UAC prompt popped up.) 99.9% of the time this will be fine, and if you need to edit something in program Files you will still be able to you'll just get an administrator warning. In the background UAC is doing a lot of permission management that you won't notice but many newer parts of the OS need. So the second way of turning UAC off is by editting the registry to really turn it off, but this will disable many parts of the system, most new fea
tures, no modern app will start, there also might be issues with updates (which may just quietly turn it back on without you realising). Bottom line, set the slider to 0, and if you think an app isn't running right, go to its properties and check the "run as administrator" box on the compatibility tab for that program.A note on Anti-viruses, I remember you are a die hard AVG user. I'm not sure if Dolphin told you this, but newer versions of AVG are considerably less accessible than the one you had on XP. They are currently testing an even newer UI which is currently completely inaccessible which is currently in a limited staged rollout test, and even the current stable 2016 version is inaccessible if it detects a threat as it blocks keyboard input so Screen readers don't even detect keys pressed and stop reading and the focus is locked in the AVG window until you react to the warning. The state of AV accessibility is in general very sad and Windows De
fender is one of the very few fully accessible options. If you don't need much out of your E-mail app, the new Mail app will be fine though I don't think you can import OE messages from it. The message list is threaded by conversation and Microsoft made sure to indicate if messages are unread or not, and this is without any screen-reader specific scripts. It also offers a 2-3 line message preview right in the list, so in many cases you won't even have to open a message to figure out if you want to read it as the Screen Reader will read the first few lines as you move down the list. You may also have to press F7 once to enable caret browsing the first time you open a message so you can read it with arrow keys, this setting is remembered so you should only have to do this once.I wonder what the state of Super Nova and modern app support is. NVDA, Narrator and JAWS have got this down for the most part. The last time I tried super nova, which was back in 2013
it didn't seem to work well with anything other than classic Microsoft apps and looking at tweets where the newest best feature of SN16 is a redesigned control panel, I'm not sure how much things improved there. The last version of Firefox, and Thunderbird it supported was 3.6. Which now is about 5 years old. So if the Mail app doesn't work well for you your only other option will be Office Outlook or learning NVDA as a secondary Screen Reader for these kind of situations.

Yes. The code factory Eloquence does have a 64-bit version and it gets installed automatically. If you're using the unofficial Eloquence hosted on Grossgang, that one's 32-bit only. Even if it had a  64-bit version I also found it very unstable and would think twice before using it in a screen reading environment.

Re: What kind of server would you recommend?

Ubuntu Server does not even include the files required for a GUI and I suspect the debian images offered by the VPS providers don't, either. So no, you won't have to worry about GUI processes using up any resources and you'll be exclusively dealing with a CLI.Installing things will go in either of 2 ways. The first, which you'll be using most often, is a package manager (apt for debian and Ubuntu). If you have ever used Homebrew on your Mac, then this is the exact same concept. If not, think of it like an app store and software update service in one. The most important packages, like Apache (web server), git, the bash shell, SSH server, text editors like vin or nano, various utilities like wget or curl for downloading files, programming languages like Python or perl or even the linux kernel, will be installed and updated with it. So usually it will come down to typing in sudo apt-get install apache or whatever else you'll need, then saying yes to con
firm the installation; You will also be able to update every package on your system at once with sudo apt-get upgrade and you'll want to do this once every few weeks to make sure you're running the newest version of everything. If something isn't already in a repository, you can install it manually. Most Linux applications are compiled manually by downloading their source code from a Git repository and running a make command. This usually is explained in the readme for whatever you'll be installing and these commands are all done on the server itself. In the case of Teamtalk you don't have to compile anything. Just get the latest linux debian archive from the bearware site (which also works on Ubuntu), extract it and start the server. You can just download files onto the server directly using wget, then extracting them. If you ever need to upload or download a file onto your computer, you can log in over SFTP by entering the exact same address, us
ername and password as for SSH. Every FTP client I'm aware of now supports SFTP connections, IE transmit, Forklift or commander one on Mac, or filezilla or winSCP on Windows.

Re: What kind of server would you recommend?

I would personally recommend Ubuntu server over debian, mostly because Debian has really old and out of date packages. Using either won't be very different at all as they both use apt for packages and when it comes down to it is Linux, so what roel said can apply just as much to Ubuntu as it does to Debian. To answer your question though, yes absolutely. 98% of linux distributions are completely free so you can just go to their homepage, get an ISO image of an installation disk and either virtualise it or run it as a live CD on a physical computer.Ubuntu server download pageDebian downloadsIn addition, a few VPS providers offer trials of their machines. For example Lynode, which is many blind people's favourites, has one though I think they are overpriced for what they offer. Setting up Linux on a VPS isn't as complicated as setting it up on a
VM.Because the hosting companies have all of the various Linux distributions on their server, all you have to do is select which one you want to use and it will be installed for you automatically and you will just be able to log in and start working right away.

Re: What kind of server would you recommend?

Windows VPS's will be considerably more expensive than a linux VPS. Not because you need higher system requirements, but because of the ridiculous licensing requirements imposed by Microsoft, the cost of which are transferred to customers by the hosting companies. If you insist on having Windows access, then the best way would probably be installing NVDA with NVDA remote on it though that will not work for iOS.Accessibility of Linux servers is perfect straight out of the box as you'll always be logging in over text-only SSH. Most things you'd ever want to do will have been explained already on-line with a lot of guides. Things like web servers or TeamTalk all have linux binaries and generally work better than they do on Windows. It would be helpful if you could explain what exactly you want to do with it and what makes Windows a requirement, as you should be able to run some basic Windows applications, IE audio game servers, using Wine (This is how the
primary RTR server is running as PureBasic's network support is very unstable under Linux)

Hi there, here's my responses in no particular order.Kindle is completely proprietary and can only open kindle formatted books. As for iBooks, it does have its own store that has books with DRM, but it can also open any .Epub or PDF books without DRM which is how I used to read before I seriously got into Voice Dream. Haven't done much reading with braille but from what I know iBooks works pretty well with a braille display, as long as you have the "turn pages while panning" switch on in VoiceOver's settings.Audio cables, you have 2 solutions, the paid, 3rd party app is called audiobus, while Apple has their own version of this called inter-app audio. I think more apps support audiobus (including apple's own garage band), but it's been a while since I looked at apps that use them. In any case, this won't actually let you record an app review as these apps don't record system audio, only things fed into them from other apps
(like audio from a software instrument for example). You can of course record reviews with headphones unplugged so that the microphone picks up the iPhone speaker's audio, but this will only be in mono and you won't be able to review apps that take over the audio. Finally, any apps that claim they can record stereo can only do this with external hardware as even though the iPhone has multiple microphones, it can only record out of 1 of them at a time in iOS.

To burn a working ISO I used a program called CD burner XP (which actually works on modern Windows as well and is still maintained). Another option may be to use Rufus to put the ISO on a USB drive. One thing to consider before you jump in head first into XP is that you should make sure you can find drivers for all your hardware (XP isn't as smart as 7 when it comes to this, so you may not have sound or networking at first for example). If this is your only computer, then you'll want to have your drivers ready on another CD or a flash drive.

LG and Samsung are the only companies that give you a tripple-click home option to toggle accessibility, plus additional hints in their stock applications for Talkback. They also make a phone that still has a physical keypad. IMO that phone in particular is crap in terms of specifications, but the important takeaway is that a lot of blind people bought it and the UI works well with accessibility services which is something that's carried over to every model now.

I also like the AVGN, but only that series and not the other things they do on the channel (maybe with the exception of Board James) so I don't actually have cinemasacre subscribed anymore. While still talking about games I also like GameSack, who do retro game reviews. Each episode is about 25 minutes long and covers a lot of games in a particular theme (released only in Japan, released only in arcades, very good/bad or with awesome music, etc). They  also do system themed episodes, the latest one being a Super Nintendo episode a few weeks ago. The reason I like them is that they explain the games very well, and unlike a lot of channels you can still hear the game audio in the background and when they're done talking you still get a few

He has a couple of different series. He mostly reviews old PC games, sometimes going into more modern things including the sims. He also does hardware reviews of computers like the Amiga, C64, Spectrum or the Tandi 1000, as well as what he calls "oddware", things that are very weird and not very practical like a controller made only to play pool games which he also tried to play Doom with. A similar channel which I found out about through LGR is Ancient DOS Games, who reviews, well, games for MS DOS. The guy is also a programmer and game designer so you often get a lot of interesting commentary. Another channel that does computer games is Kimble Justice. He makes a lot of interesting series, a few years ago he did an "A to Z of licensed games", while currently he's making a lot of d

These are really well researched and have a lot of interesting information. Then as far as computer videos, I can definitely recommend danooct1, who shows off DOS and Windows viruses running on actual hardware. DOS viruses especially were very interesting and creative, and he always explains what's going on on the screen so you can follow along really well, occasionally he also does other things like showing off hardware. His friend has a channel called Rogueamp which deals with modern viruses, mostly rogues - viruses that pretend to be anti viruses to scam you for money.More people that do old computer reviews include vwestlife and uxwbill, who also look at old radios and cameras and these are really detailed. One of his DOS machine builds actually has a dectalk PC installed and he did a few videos on Dectalk as well.OK  I just realised I follow wy too many channels, so here's a few more that I just can't be bothered to explain that are really cool: Retroware TV, replayretro, ashens (especially his pop station watch series), Lary Bundy JR (fact hunt and games yanks can't wank), caddycarous (Mostly playstation game reviews), I hate Everything (especially his search for the worst series going over the bottom 100 worst movies on IMDB), and somecallmejohny (especially the Johny VS series)

His friend has a channel called Rogueamp which deals with modern viruses, mostly rogues - viruses that pretend to be anti viruses to scam you for money.More people that do old computer reviews include vwestlife and uxwbill, who also look at old radios and cameras and these are really detailed. Finally, you should look at Druaga1's channel. It's very chaotic but interesting
. He does both old Dos, Windows and Mac videos, tries to put SSD's into just about everything. One of his DOS machine builds actually has a dectalk PC installed and he did a few videos on Dectalk as well.OK  I just realised I follow wy too many channels, so here's a few more that I just can't be bothered to explain that are really cool: Retroware TV, replayretro, ashens (especially his pop station watch series), Lary Bundy JR (fact hunt and ames yanks can't wank), caddycarous (Mostly playstation game reviews), and I hate Everything (especially his search for the worst series going over the bottom 100 worst movies on IMDB)

Re: Scanning and OCR tools

As far as comparing Omnipage and Finereader there's no competition, this is why both K1000 and OpenBook use it so you'd be getting very similar recognition results, maybe slightly better with K1000 if it really does use a newer Finereader. The difference will be in the interface you'll  be using to then read the results, and that's when you get into personal preference territory. Both programs as well as the official Abyy fine reader have trials so you can just try all of them and see which one you like best.

Re: Scanning and OCR tools

Going back to Windows OCR, both OpenBook and Kurzweil are powered by FineReader, with Kurzweil running the latest Finereader 12. I haven't used OpenBook in a while but I think it's using an older version of FR, though people can correct me on this. I personally prefer Kurzweil's interface. It's also more configurable  and has more features. Case and point is that I used it not just to scan things, but also to read Epub books and do basic word processing. All that being said, both K1000 and OB are very expensive and if all you need is OCR, the official Finereader app will be more than enough and cost considerably less. There's also Serotek's docuscan, which you can get for pretty cheep in a subscription model, but it's been a while since I used it and I'm not sure what engine it's using.

Re: Installing mak on my computer: how to go about it?

@mohamed the hardware, as was previously said, is for the most part standard off the shelf PC components. Many parts of it, like the intel processors and their graphics, the nvidia discrete graphics cards or the broadcom Wi-Fi/bluetooth radios are all also found in made for Windows hardware and those companies already have working drivers for them. If apple hadn't made bootcamp, someone else probably would have managed to install Windows anyway. You can run Linux just as easily, by the way. As for why Apple doesn't allow you to install OS X on other computers, there's a few reasons. They like to have control over the hardware, and they're not making any money off of software upgrades so it makes sense for them not to let you install OS X on, say a used ultrabook and pretend that it's a macbook. That's lost sales for Apple.@Afrim if you virtualise OS X on that hardware, you're gonna get scarred for life and never want to touch the Mac ever
again. I virtualised OS X twice. Once on an 1.83GHZ Core II Duo with 2 gigs of ram, and that was unusable, the VM took at least a few seconds to recognise any key press and the audio constantly stuttered. The second time was a 2.5GHZ core I5 with 4 GB, which worked but was somewhat slow and it was very easy to get it to do a similar unresponsiveness spike on it just by trying to browse a somewhat complicated website for example.

Re: your thoughts about this laptop?

Oh yeah, that laptop should definitely do everything that you brought up. In fact you can probably play most games on higher settings than the lowest. It might not let you play games in Ultra settings as it's a mobile version of the GPU but it should handle most games on medium, and many on high just fine. An explanation about Intel processor labels, the first number r in the processor model doesn't refer to its number of cores, it signifies the generation of the processor (in the Core I3/5/7 range). so, a processor starting with 6xxx means is that it's a 6th generation.

Re: The oddity of "Reverse Sales"

This kind of strategy is now quite popular thanks to things like Steam Early access (for those unaware it's basically a section of Steam where developers put up pre-release, alpha/beta games for purchase). Quite often these games cost less while in this stage and the price later goes up when development is finished. Then there's crowd funding where there's more than enough people willing to pay more than the final price to get access to early testing, to get a poster or some other perk. Personally, I'm OK with the price of games being smaller, then going up later as development progresses, but only if this is clearly stated. So if a game has been out for a while as a stable release, then a month or more/less time later the developer suddenly raises the price without warning, I think that's a jerk move and shouldn't happen.

I have a PI2 for a year now and I'm also mostly using it as a file server. I run both samba (Windows SMB) and Netatalk (Mac AFP to get time machine backups). I also put the latest BTSync on it, which is really convenient as the pi is always on so I can share files to people all the time. It's also being used for large download or upload operations (youtube-dl for videos, wget for websites, lftp to upload to ftp or webdav and transmission for torrents).Other people I know run other things, for example Andre Louis recently connected a USB audio interface to his pi, which is now being used to  run his outside audio stream. Another friend runs teamTalk, Irc, fossil (it's a subversion system like git) and barracuda drive on his.I haven't personally ran a Kodi media centre on my Pi, but it's definitely not a bad option. There are preconfigured  distress for this, like OpenElec. If you install Kodi Screen reader into it, such a setup can b
e much more powerful than an Apple TV which is way more expensive as Kodi has access to many more sources because of the community around it.One more thing, this is personal preference, but I don't run raspbian on my pi and instead opted for ArchLinux ARM. It's a lot smaller and doesn't come with the bloat of raspbian that you won't ever use if running headless. I also really love the AUR repositories as many things you would normally have to manually compile yourself from sources can be installed for you automatically. It also uses systemd which I think is more straight forward to use than init scripts.

Re: REquesting Window eyes assistance

The way Window-eyes does punctuation is slightly different to how it works usually. Instead of having options for none, some, most and all, it has 3 groups that can be controlled separately - textual, math, and miscellaneous. Go into the control panel, and expand the option for screen and find the setting for punctuation. Now you can just tab into the various combo boxes for each level. If you press F1 anywhere in Window-Eyes settings you'll get a short help message on what that option does. in the case of these punctuation levels it tells you what kind of characters are in each.As for heading levels, while you're still in the control panel go down to the verbocity section, expand it, then find the browse mode section and expand that as well. You will now see all the various controls here including headings. Once again, tab off of the tree view to see what you can change. The nice thing in WE is that you can change whether something is announced separately for jus
t moving around normally and when it's doing a read to end (the equivllent of document read in SuperNova). So, when you go to heading, you will see 2 sets of radio buttons whether heading levels should be announced, 1 for reading in general, and one for read to end. And remember to press ctrl+S to save your settings when you change them!

I get this problem, but only if iOS switches voices on its own. I have my phone in English and my "default language" option is set to use Alex, but I also have the Polish voice and keyboard set up. If I switch to the Polish keyboard but still use the Alex voice, then after VOiceOver switches to the Polish voice to read the key label Alex will say the TNSpell thing. The way I avoid this is just by switching voices. This may have something to do with differences in the way that MacinTalk and Vocaliser interpret commands, but that's just a guess.

Re: Classic home computers and the blind. Your experiences

Technically, the RC8650 chip that  the DoubleTalk and Millennium note takers used had more configuration options - there was pitch, volume and frequency like with the Votrax SC02/artek SSI263 chip of the older blazie note takers, but it also had more voices, a basic reverb, a built-in speech processor and dictionary as well as a tone generator. The Votrax chip could only accept a command to play one of its phonemes at a specific pitch and amplitude (volume) and not much else. This is why when the millennium note takers were released the basic programs that generate tones would crash as basic was most likely trying to use some very low level assembly to talk to the Votrax to make it beep. Anyway I think I have most of the basic and otherwise Blazie programs and we're working with guilevi on the site, which will probably be where it will end up. If you want recordings of anything, let me know, I can probably make something that sounds quite good.

A workaround of sorts is to use the dosbox capture audio command, which by default is ctrl+f6. Of course you'll need to then trim the resulting recordings with a sound editor, but I'm not aware of anything that would give you wav files of something like softvoice or monolog.

Re: REquesting Window eyes assistance

If the hotkeys don't do what the manual says, I think you have the insert key layout turned on. The new window-eyes versions, starting with I think either 8 or 9, ship with a whole bunch of scripts installed. One of them is a setup wizard that, on first launch, lets you set up a couple of most important settings like voice, what keys to speak as well as the keyboard layout. I installed Window-Eyes 9.3 recently and the default selection in that setup wizard for the keyboard layout is set to "alternative insert layout", or something to that effect anyway. This layout is designed to mimmic the typical layout of most other screen readers, mostly JAWS and NVDA. Window-Eyes's default keyboard commands are very unique and different - case and point being that insert T in JAWS and NVDA reads the window title, while in Window-Eyes it's used to get the current date and time. Here's the confusing part. This insert layout is implemented in a separate script
, which has its own settings. So even though your Window-Eyes control panel may be saying you're using the standard desktop or laptop layout, that script is overwriting it. Because your friend is used to the standard WE keys, you'll probably just want to turn this script off. You can do that from the apps menu. Open the WE control panel, hit Alt+A to open the apps menu, down arrow to insert key layout, open its submenu and choose the "disable" option .

Re: REquesting Window eyes assistance

Control shift W reads the whole window top to bottom, which is only really useful in message boxes that ask you a question. As for mouse movement, with the previously mentioned insert layout turned on, moving the Window-Eyes mouse works a lot like the JAWS/dolphin cursor. You press numpad minus to start moving the mouse, and then you can just use the arrow keys to read by lines, characters and words. Then pressing numpad plus turns it off and you can move the focus normally. With the normal WE desktop layout, the best way I can describe it is that you should think of the numpad as another set of arrow keys or a joystick. You don't need to turn on any specific cursor to move the mouse, because this is always done with the numpad. imagine that 5 is the center of this joystick and it will read the current character. Branching off from this you have the arrow keys. Numpad 8, which is directly above, is like the up arrow and it moves up a line, while numpad 2, which is direc
tly below, moves down a line. 4 and 6, which are to the sides, move back and forward a character. Lastly, the keys in the corners move to the edges of the screen - 7, which is in the top left corner moves to the top left of the window (IE the very first character), 9 is the top right, 1 is the bottom left and 3 is bottom right. the last 2 keys that may be useful are the numpad slash and asterisk which respectively perform a left and right mouse click, and this is no matter what layout you're using.

There are password managers and things of that sort that can keep this information encrypted. One thing I just thought of you could do is write down the number of your card, but then memorise the CVC and expiration date and don't put it in the file. This way even if someone hacks into your computer, they won't be able to use your card.Money recognition apps do exist. On Android you have the free blind droid wallet, plus both taptapsee and goggles can also recognize most currency. As for hot water dispencers, I have seen then in public places, usually waiting rooms in hospitals, but never at someone's house. For games, you're gonna want something with dedicated graphics. My 2013 MacBook pro with it's Geforce 650M can handle Both MK 10 and GTA V, they sound fine at least and play well, so any laptop that has a dedicated Geforce 750M or newer should be able to work. Those are usualy backed with a propper, quad-core I7 and at least 8 gigs of ram, so there should't be many things that computer won't handle in terms of daily tasks.

Re: Question about two different processors

There are many factors that could be a reason for the speed difference you say you are noticing. It could be other hardware in the computer, like the hard drive or even the software on the operating systems. Preinstalled Windows from OEM's can sometimes be extremely slow because of all the software in the background eating up CPU time and disk operations. The other thing to consider is that there are a lot of different kinds of processors, both in the I5 and I7 ranges. In theory, the I7 is more powerful than an I5. In practice it all depends on the version. Recently Intel started to release I5's and I7's optimised for energy efficiency and size. These often end up in things like new ultrabooks or the new Mac Mini. They're smaller, use a lot less energy and of course don't run as fast as a result. They also usually have only 2 cores with hyperthreading compared to 4 cores for a the other I7's found in more conventional laptops and desktops. The sa
me can be said for the I5 processors. If you buy a normal mid range laptop that has a core I5, it's very likely it will be able to outperform an I7 in a more expensive ultrabook. When trying to figure out that sort of information, look on Intel's site first, which will give you the actual number of cores in a processor, you can also look for reviews of the computer that you're interested in or other computers that also happen to have that processor in them. One site I really like for in-depth performance info is AnandTech which, if you can get passed the fact they split up their reviews into 2 pages is very good and has way more than enough information.

Reports of how much less reliable SSD's are compared to mechanical drives are definitely exadurated. Look onthis site. The takeaway from this is quite simple, you'd have to write a rediculous amount of data before the drive would fail. If you decide to go for a setup with an SSD for the OS and your most used programs and a mechanical drive for the rest, this will be even less of an issue, and the performance definitely feels better. I use both a computer that has a mechanical drive and one with an SSD daily, both with very good processors and I can definitely feel that the SSD runs much faster.

Re: need help from someone who knows their way around computer issues

Heat could be a very good explanation for major lag. Most CPU's reduce the clock frequency to prevent the computer from overheating completely, which of course results in a massive drop of performance. I had a laptop that every half a year or so would need to get cleaned up, otherwise the heat would cause the processor to intermitendly slow to an almost near dead stop for a few seconds or so every few minutes, which made even the most basic audiogames almost unplayable. Get a program like coretemp or speed fan to see what temperatures you're reaching. If when the computer is not doing anything the CPU temp gets to 80 or 90 degrees Celcius, you definitely want it cleaned up.The hard drive could also be dying, which could cause bad performance. It also might have corrupted a system file which is now causing your problems, so that's another area I would check with a program like HDTune or disk checkup. SSvchost.exe is a system file responsible for running servic
es. Services include things like various helper software for drivers, audio, or even video intercepting for just about every comertial screen reader. It's normal to have multiple instances of it, which is also sadly why a lot of malware pretends to be that file. Killing the wrong one could cause a system crash. As I said before, files from a service could have been corrupted causing a freeze and memory leak, or it could be just as well some piece of malware.

Re: slight catostraphie with my external hd

If you unplug a drive without first ejecting it, OS X gets quite annoyed with you. More importantly to this discussion the next time you connect the drive it runs a scan to see if it has any errors, but while this scan is running the drive shows up absolutely nowhere which is the really confusing part. Usually, this scan shouldn't take more than 30 seconds to a minute but I have seen it take much longer once or twice. So, if you connect your drive, it spins up but you don't see it, just give it a few minutes and it should pop up in finder as normal.

Re: usb device not installed successfullly .

You say that the iPhone is "constantly beeping" while this is happening. This leads me to think that this may have something to do with either the cable or the port on the phone. Apple's 30-pin cables have questionable quality sometimes, so it's very likely the wires have started to bent out of the contact, or that one of the pins (there's 30 of them in both the cable and the phone's port itself) is bent. These pins perform different functions, some are used only for charging, some transmit audio/video and are only used in docks, and some are used for data transfer and it might be one of those that's having problems. What I would suggest you try now is try connecting your phone to another computer, even someone elses. If it still doesn't work, try using a different cable, again on multiple computers to verify your results. If the issue is still there then you may have to send your phone for servicing.

Re: virtual mac on a windows machine?

2015-11-28 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: virtual mac on a windows machine?

I personally use both, as there are times when a VM will simply not be fast enough for some tasks in Windows, I'm mostly thinking here of Windows mainstream games. My Mac has the hardware to play something like MK10 very well, but I would not want to attempt that on a virtual machine... Running skull girls inside  XP resulted in vmware almost freezing OS X itself, though a friend managed it on Windows 7. Still, it's good to have both. VmWare can actually boot into a  bootcamp partition as a VM, so you can make use of both very easily.Anyway, because this is sort of off-topic in regards to the original question, I have ran mountain lion on an HP elite book before. You don't actually need a VmWare unlocker if your processor supports what's called hardware virtualisation, or VTX. Pretty much every I5 and I7 processor does as far as I know, though it may sometimes be deactivated in the bios by the manufacturer of the computer. This was the case on
my HP, so I needed to get sighted help to turn it on. Running without VTX is possible if you run the aforementioned unlockers, but the VM will most likely be much slower than it would be with VtX on. Anyway, even with that done the system was incredibly slow. Just navigating around was laggy, but doable. However many tasks would cause OS X to go busy, or the sound would start lagging even more and crackling and the entire VM would slow down. The test computer had a 2.5GHZ I5 that could boost up to 3.1 and 4GB of ram, with 2 for the VM. This definitely does not happen even on the lowest end macs - things do occasionally go busy if you hammer it, but the sound never crackles. The one thing I remember from this is that iLife 11 took about 2 hours to install on the VM because of the slowdown, while on a real system it took about 5-10 minutes. So, as someone said before, it's much better to get a real Mac, which amusingly enough does a much better job of running Windows
than a Windows computer does running OS X, whether it's running in fusion or bootcamped

Well, technically there have been new voices from Ivona coming out, but only for Amazon. Case and point being the voice used in the amazon echo, which is available nowhere else. On that note the Android app has been pulled, but you can download any ivona voice you want if you have one of the kindles.

uBlock is actually a good replacement to adblock plus. They both use the same filters like easy list. uBlock is much better optimised though and uses a lot less RAM. I'll freely admit to not having switched to uBlock in my Firefox, but only because I now mostly use a mac with Safari and for the times I use FF ABP still works. What else do I use? Stuff that has been brought up here before, like down them all which is a really good download manager. Not only because it does batch downloads, but it also has support for segmented downloading which it does automatically that makes a lot of downloads go faster. I also have flash got, which lets you download embedded flash or HTML5 videos from any site, and noise which makes FF play sounds for various actions

Re: No Flash player installed

I have also went to the page you linked to, and it worked perfectly fine with Firefox and NVDA on Windows 7. I ran it first with adblock, and then I turned it off because ads are very script heavy these days. That caused NVDA to lag while moving, but not enough to freeze anything or to cause Firefox to give me an unresponsive script warning. It could be that something has installed an ad-on that injects its own scripts which could be causing this. Try running your browsers in safe mode and go to this site again (in Firefox, you choose "restart with ad-ons disabled" in the help menu, I'm not sure how you do this in IE). Then just go to your ad-ons in both browsers and see if you hav anything that probably shouldn't be there (toolbars and that sort of thing)

Re: Best Approved Portable Eloquence-NVDA Strategy

So I have tried both the "official" and "unofficial" versions of Eloquence and I can tell you the "official" one has some slight problems that the unofficial one doesn't. Nothing that would be a showstopper mind you, but there's a few things to note.First, I don't know what kind of background processes the code factory Eloquence is running, but just like any kind of Vocaliser, I have seen it stutter and cut out when the computer is under load, like for example when just booting up. That's on a first generation core I5 at 3.4 GHZ. It also takes a very long time for NVDA to start at first when using it, probably due to the activation check. With the unofficial driver, it loads NVDA normally, and I've never seen it stutter. Yes, it does pause between speech chunks because NVDA isn't reacting fast enough, but the speech never broke up.I have also seen the pitch get stuck a few times after reading a capital letter
, so you'd have to mess with it to get it back. You also can't change the voice as easily - the only speech setting you have is "voice" for the language, while if you want to change the variant (Reed, Shelly, etc), you have to launch their configuration app and change it there. The inflection setting is also missing completely.

Re: Sapi5 core gone

There are key finder utilities that allow you to extract the key from a windows installation. One thing to keep in mind when you go to reinstall it is that the edition on your windows install disk has to match the product key. That is, for example if your computer came with Win 7 home premium, which is what most shipped with, you need a home premium disk. Installing a different edition will most likely work but then activation will fail because the editions don't match. There may be a way to hack your windows to be a different edition after installation but I don't know how because I've never done it.

Re: Monthly chat October

@dark, One thing I can definitely recommend to your friend is that she upgrade to Window-Eyes 9 if she's not running it already. Saying the web support in that version got updated would be a huge understatement. It can now finally work properly with webpages that have small parts of them being changed (for anyone unaware Window-eyes web buffer was static until version 9 and you needed to refresh it manually). As far as me, last week I got to ride in a somewhat crappy bus early in the morning. This meant it was cold, and there was a small hole in the floor where I was sitting. So even though I had a nice jacket on, I got very cold through my feet and crashed completely the next day and through the weekend. So the start of October pretty much sucks. I'm still recovering from this, and it's given me some time to watch more anime. I've now caught up on all the dubbed Fairy Tail episodes, and in the meantime I introduced some friends to 2 more anime that I us
ed to watch a few years ago, Code Lyoko (which is actually French, not Japanese) and Megaman NT warrior. I decided to rewatch them myself, this time in English and I'm quite enjoying it. What else? In the last topic I mentioned possibly getting a BNS 2000. This has now happened, the package arrived yesterday in one piece and I had a brief play with it. My current desktop, even though is from around 2010, actually has a serial port which now became very useful. I am also debating whether to start with the blind legend. The game sounds totally awesome and I think it will be stream material for PG13, probably this week and that's why I'm not sure if I want to start or not. Playing the game first time on the stream could be quite entertaining.

Hi Jake,Your add-on has a bug in the way it handles encoding. If you want it to work, you'll need to set your entire system locale to whatever language you want to work with. Otherwise even proper unicode text isn't going to read as Key has already noticed.

Most likely you won't even need an answer file, vmware's easy install feature can set you up most of the way to the point that all you will need to do is wait for the startup sound, hit windows+U to get narrator up and then copy over another screen reader. If you choose to go this way, all you will need is an XP ISO and a product key so vmware can enter it.

Well, considering we recently had someone complain they got some nasty fake anti virus after attempting to get an old version of Skype, maybe you almost ran into this yourself.Internet explorer is very deeply integrated into windows, even though it doesn't look like it... Basically, what I'm saying is that unless you have an old system with windows 98, 2000 or XP, you won't be able to install it on anything newer, I don't think Windows will let you downgrade it.

@Cae mosquitoes suck. As I once told one person, I'd rather have 20 spiders on my ceiling rather than a single mosquito flying around. I'm probably more afraid of wasps though, simply because when one stings me I seem to have a very allergic reaction to it, where the swelling is much larger than usual and takes longer to go away. There was once a wasp who decided to take a nap in our bath tub because we left the bathroom window open. So I go in to take a bath and the thing somehow manages to stay afloat, and it just happened to brush me. I had no idea what it was, grabbed it with my thumb and threw it away but not before it managed to sting me.  The result of that was my thumb swelled to at least 3 times its normal size, I couldn't bend it and typing for a while was somewhat uncomfortable. @Dark well, normally getting paid extra is not allowed here e
ither. That said, nothing stops therapists that work in a hospital to also take in people privately after their usual work time, and indeed many do just that simply because of how amazing the money is from working in a hospital. As for me I'm actually thinking of just opening an office or just buying a portable massage table and then traveling around to people's houses. This will let me also go and study other things, while having a stable job so that's good.

If it's really that intrusive, try running a scan with malwarebytes, preferably in safe mode so that it will be able to remove its files for you.On the topic of the uninstaller, you can try using NVDA's OCR plugin though whether said installer can be trusted I can't say. Usually, for these scam anti viruses, it's likely the uninstaller won't work, or will work only after you buy the full version.

I am writing this post at a time that I should probably be in bed, but I'm not. Go figureSo for the passed week and the upcoming one, I am having work practice at a hospital as part of school. Speaking of therapy, I am studying to be a Massage therapist, and I'm finally on my last year. For these 2 weeks of practice, it's basically like working proper including having to get a contract. This is my second time at this hospital as I did this last school year back in April. It helps that the people I'm working with, both patients and the other therapists, are very nice and helpful (as in I'm learning quite a lot from them) and last week I got my first ever tip (as in money). In other news, although I haven't ordered any new apple things recently, thanks to fellow forum member guilevi I will be most likely getting a Braille N' Speak 2000 in a few weeks. He got one for himself a few months ago and I've always been fascinated with old
tech and software (talking dosbox should be somewhat of a proof of this), so when he told me there is a place selling working ones for very cheep I jumped at the possibility. It's probably going to get mostly used as an actual hardware synth. To end this post, thinking about old tech made me think of this Youtube channel. He shows off old DOS and Windows 9X viruses in action, mostly on real hardware. It's very easy to follow as he describes everything that he's doing and he  reads any messages that come up. I have to say that Viruses back then were a lot more interesting than they are now and looked a lot more like the typical virus in a movie on TV. As an example there's one that deletes your file allocation table, then has you play guess the number to see if you can get your data back. I wonder how they came up with ideas like that.

I havent posted in one of these monthly chat topics in a few months, mostly because there wasnt much to talk about on my side. Right now, I just finished my second coffee of the day and Im trying to figure out what Ill be doing today. On Tuesday, as its usually happened since 2012, Im driving to Germany to meet up with Ghorthalon. Im really looking forward to this as pretty much every year it happened so far we had an amazing time. Last year, he made a new game, challenged me to use a witch voice on my phone and I took him to a few places as well. Theres some audios of the stuff we did on both my and his audioboom, feedsIve been playing a lot of the blindfold card games lately, mostly spades and I think theyre OK, but have some issues. Im not a fan of the interface used to select your cards and the fact youre forced into using the god awful high pitched Samantha voice. The AI is also a bit,
well, either somewhat stupid or overly aggressive, always playing the highest card it can. After an hour or so of playing I basically learned to exploit this behaviour. Compare this to the way the bots in the QC playroom work and you will probably see what I mean. All this made me realise one thing though, the Mac is missing a lot of really basic accessible games. On Windows, theres at least 3 kinds of Solitaire, a few blackjacks, etc, while theres nothing on the Mac. This is a shame because when I used to take notes at school I often killed time when the teacher left for a moment by playing games like Uno or Video poker, and I cant really do that now. I may look for some games where I could approach the developers to ask for VO support, but Im also looking at where I want to go with programming and what language to learn next. I could just stick to Pure Basic, but the mac version has a lot of random bugs and isnt tested very well, though I did ge
t around some of them with other people. The other things Im considering is Swift, _javascript_ and Python, all of which have things going for them. Python is very universal, theres shitloads of libraries built for it. With _javascript_, with the new OS X versions I can use applescript scripting additions to automate apps and also access cocoa frameworks, plus I already have cross platform support for speech, 3D sounds and various forms of Input, while Swift is quite easy, very fast, and would let me go into native iOS application development which will be much easier to do and test with iOS 9, where you wont need a developer account anymore to run your code on an iOS device. The one drawback of swift is that there is a Mac and Linux compiler, but not one for Windows so any games I make in Swift wont be easy to port.
