Stellar Aeon is something I've been working on intermittently for the last few years.  Right now, it's got a procedurally generated universe you can explore, with mining and jobs.  There's alien civilizations in place, but you can't really interact with them or do anything right now.  There's no aliens in human space.The game is technically not a mud, but it has a text based interface and a blind mode to reduce spam, similar to Alter Aeon.  AA and SA use a lot of common code, so you might notice things that are similar between the two games, including the account system.  There's no custom client like mush-z with sounds or music.The basic idea of Stellar Aeon right now:- You start out with a single crappy ship- You mine from the local asteroid to learn commands and upgrade your ship- You do a few starter jobs to learn how to do jobs (and jobs give a lot more money than ordinary mining)- You get a second round of starter jobs that help encourage you to travel to a nearby star system- You're then at the point where you can buy or build additional ships, get extra personnel, go exploring, etc- If you want to go really far distances, there's a wormhole/flux network as well as a basement universe for fast travelBut again, remember that it's very much Beta, and I haven't had a lot of time to spend on it in the last six months.  Things like managing personnel work, but you might find the commands to be annoying.  There's a bunch of channels for talking to other people (see 'channels' for a list), and most of them connect over to Alter Aeon so you might see people responding from there.Normally I wouldn't promote it in such an incomplete state, but the original poster looked like he was having a hard time, and like the exploration aspect might work for him.

Caccio, you may want to try the beta port of Stellar Aeon, up at stellaraeon.com port 4000.  One of the bigger issues with the game right now is that exploring planets is basically all you can do, but if you just want to explore planets, there's a lot of them.

Jayde:  Shadowfax couldn't get in touch with me either, and he felt like he needed to do something, even if it was wrong.  He tried to find the best set of rules he could, and made a decision based on it.  Shadowfax sent the takedown quite a while before my post; it's no different than deciding to proceed with the lottery prior to getting approvals.Please don't assume malice here.  As far as I can tell, everyone involved made decisions that made sense at the time, there were just communication problems.

I apologize for the lack of clarity as well, and we shouldn't go around casting blame.  We make the best decisions we can with the information we have, and sometimes we're wrong.  That's ok.Personally, I don't think this is a scam.  However, it occupies a grey area where things can potentially be really problematic.  I have to think about more than just my feelings here, and that means making sure AA stays safe while we figure out the best way to deal with it.

I'm looking into this and trying to see what makes sense from the game/server standpoint.  Unfortunately, things involving RL cash potentially open AA up to various legal and money laundering concerns.  We'll try to put down some updates to the rules to cover this and a few other cases in the next few days.My gut instinct for now is that the AA admin and staff should not directly participate, and I would prefer that it not be advertised on the AA public boards and admin owned channels.To be clear, this is not officially sanctioned by AA.  If there are disputes on the game we'll try to handle them as fairly as we can, but there will be limits to what we can do since much of this is being handled off-game.

Part 4 - Don't Complain too loudlyTo be honest, I feel that my full posts (which were included by Teros into this thread) speak pretty clearly for themselves.  I find it interesting that Teros has had to attack not just sentences, but individual pieces of sentences one at a time to make them sound awful.  Anything taken sufficiently out of context can be seen as terrible.When my posts are read in full, they say something very different, and paint a consistent and coherent picture.The simple fact of the matter is that I spent a lot of time looking through logs and a lot of time understanding the situation.  In the end, I didn't ban either player for isolated incidents or for speaking out once too often on some channel.I banned them because they were long term, persistent problems.In retrospect, the only thing I did wrong was that I didn't ban them a month earlier.---Part 5 - [Teros'] final OpinionThere's not much to say here.  I'm glad Teros had fun playing Alter Aeon for free.  I hope in the future he has fun playing somewhere else.-dentinAlter Aeon MUDhttp://www.alteraeon.com

Since the original post is a direct attack against me, I figured I should probably respond.  I'll be breaking it up into sections and probably multiple posts to keep it from being a giant wall of text.Part 1 - Computer Tracking in Mush-ZThe current Mush-Z releases have a tracking identifier that lets the AA server tell apart clients if there are multiple people logging in from the same IP address.  We primarily use it as a way to tell apart people who are multiplaying from those who aren't.I didn't add the uuid, and I certainly didn't hide it from people. It's never been a secret.  I've always been up front about it. As mentioned before, it's been in the code for years.All this said, I don't really see how it's any different than the tracking ids that are being used by audiogames.net.  I just checked with an incognito window, and sure enough, audiogames.net is using three tracking cookies, including one named __cfduid to uniquely identify me.Teros (the original poster in this thread) knew about the tracking ID, was a Mush-Z developer, and even went so far as to damage the tracking code for his personal client.  Nobody who worked on Mush-Z denied it existed.  We all knew about it, and frankly, I thought everyone else knew about it too.At any rate the client ID doesn't really do much for the game. To bind commands to function keys, you set in-game aliases with the 'alias' command.  You can stack many commands into a single alias, which means you can also stack a lot of commands into a function key.Regarding the leveling system, it's designed so that most players will have about 5 levels between their various classes - for example, 20 mage, 15 cleric, 10 thief, and 5 warrior.  The cost for each of your lower classes is higher than the previous, which is how we get this staggering effect.  If you always level your cheapest class, which is what 'help advice' recommends, you'll naturally see this pattern emerge.

Yeah, f3, f4, and control-f1 have special bindings and you can't easily change them.  F10, f11, and f12 are used for volume control. You also can't use control-f4, since that's the windows 'close program' function.  But f7 and f8 should always be available.Remember that you can use the shift, control, and alt versions of the function keys too.

UAC is a global thing, you have to change it for the whole system.  Most of the time people recommend you just turn UAC completely off in the system settings or wherever it lives - it causes a lot of problems for a lot of different programs.

Normally when things like this happen, its because you installed it as administrator, but you're trying to run it or update it as a regular user.  The whole UAC (user account control) thing really fouls up the install process.  It's supposed to install into your own user directory so it doesn't need permission, but sometimes UAC tries to put it somewhere else anyway.Totally lame.

Dont try to add other worlds to Mush-Z. While its theoretically possible to do that, its best to download a standalone copy of mushclient instead. None of the Mush-Z sounds will work properly on other games, and weve had several people break their Mush-Z install by trying to do this.

Im unfortunately moving in three weeks, and between the new job and other planned things Im probably not going to get back to Stellar Aeon for a couple of months. Its currently in limited test mode - pretty much the only things you can do are fly around, mine asteroids, upgrade your ship, and find bugs. Its not really a game yet. When I have time to work on it, things go fairly fast, so Im expecting official open by year end.

Cruiser, are you trying to use mushclient, or Mush-Z? They are not the same thing. You can get Mush-Z from http://mush-z.com - download the Alter Aeon installer and use that.If you have a previous version of mush-z that doesnt work, you might have to uninstall it and delete the directories.

Soundpacks are extremely client specific and not portable. A VIP mud sound pack isnt compatible with Mushclient, and the Mush-Z soundpack is basically incompatible with everything except itself. Youre requesting something unreasonable.Id recommend you just go with Mushclient, and harass the muds you care about into producing a pack for it. Theres no reason to use anything else, at least if youre on windows.

I tend to measure size in terms of areas - on Alter Aeon, those are between 50 and 100 room blocks most of the time, though there are a few miniature areas of only a couple dozen rooms, and some mega areas which span multiple blocks of a hundred rooms. Theres a lot of areas by this measure that dont count, such as linkage roads and paths, which are usually more empty than full areas.Ignoring the hidden zones, AA has around 400 different areas you can go to. About a quarter of these are on the new player islands: theres 20 or so on sloe, around 35 on kordan, and 50 different zones on archais. The remaining several hundred areas are on the mainland, north and south continent, outer planar realms, and elsewhere. Its a huge amount of content.I can understand the desire for random wilderness to give a place to explore in, but with the way that AA is laid out were pretty sure it just doesn&
 #039;t make sense at this time. You shouldnt be trying to use unicode characters on a mud - muds are 7 bit ascii, and while a handful of extended characters might possibly be allowed through the socket stack, its unlikely anyone else can see them properly.Definitely try to stick with MushClient - GMud is worse in literally every way, and if you cant get MushClient to do what you want, its because you just havent figured out how yet. If you want to connect to other games, its best to get MushClient from the mushclient website and use that instead.Yes, I know that mush-z is technically built on top of mushclient. Yes, I know that its theoretically possible to use mush-z to connect to other games. However, people who dont know what theyre doing risk breaking their copy of Mush-Z, and even if they are successful they still wont have any sounds or the other features that work on Alter Aeon. I dont think we can lay all the problem on the players - a big part of the issue stems from overreaction of game admins. A lot of them are capricious and emotional, turning everything into a personal affront that must be destroyed at all costs. Debates escalate to name calling and insults escalate to admins banning people forever in a righteous huff that does nobody any good. Its stupid.On top of that is the hacking issue. The very idea of labeling someone like tyler a hacker is ridiculous - he, along with 95+% of the so called hackers Ive seen, couldnt hack their way out of a wet paper bag. Theyre about as dangerous as puppies: able to poop on the floor where you dont expect it, but not much else. But rather than treat these players like puppies that need to be taught and socialized, helping teach them and helping them grow into decent people, they get treated like crap in
 stead. They get banned, they get yelled at. Small wonder they dont improve.

Its not so much that higher levels absolutely require grouping to go anywhere, its more that higher levels were a lot harder and more chaotic than they needed to be. You can do nearly everything solo if you know what youre doing and work hard for it, but IMHO its not really reasonable to expect everyone to go through that. It also means a lot of unfun drudge work.For the record, I dont generally like grouping with other people that much either. My attention span is too short.

Part 1 - backgroundOver the last couple of months on Alter Aeon, a lot of work has been going on under the covers. Weve been making pretty serious changes to the building tools, player and mob experience, and to areas in general. Id like to talk about a few of those and give some insight into whats happening.This all started a bit after the 20th anniversary event in January. From player complaints and some new data collection code, us builders started to realize that there were problems with experience at mid and high levels. The mid level experience problems were pretty easy to work out, and were largely fixed by changing the way that exp caps were calculated.However, the high level problems were much harder to understand. In the end, its because we didnt think about areas properly when building them.One of the most important things we realized when looking through areas was that we didnt actu
 ally have any concept of high level solo zones. The only difference between a group area and a solo area was the level of the mobs in it, and because of that our group zones were a little too weak, and our solo areas were way too hard.Something else we realized is that the difficulty of mobs was all over the place in most high level areas. Some areas had decoration mobs, exp mobs, bosses, and super hard fame all near each other without warning.On top of this, weve also recently discovered that the number of areas in the high level ranges is far from ideal.All of these things combined have made high level exploring pretty dangerous and inconsistent. Theyve also made the game far more difficult for high level solo players than it should have been.Part 2 - what were doingOne of the biggest and most far reaching changes weve been working on is to completely split group and solo zones. Weve now
  got solo areas, and areas that can be marked for various group sizes. Our building tools look at the type of area, and the way mobs are built changes based on it. Solo areas get built with much easier mobs that are are reasonable to solo, while group areas get built with much harder mobs based on the group size.Under the old building system, a high level player might have been able to solo their way through a lower level group zone. That will be a lot harder once we get areas updated for the new system, but under the new system higher level players should actually have solo areas that make sense.Another problem with doing all the updates at once is that we need to think a lot harder about where high level areas are placed and how many high level areas there should be in each level range. Right now were leaning toward making a low level corridor that stretches from Ralnoth to Orton and possibly Vandar, then increasi
 ng area level as areas get farther away.Part 3 - now what?The downside is that theres a lot of areas to update. Even after we get the area levels worked out, weve got to go through a lot of zones and rebuild a lot of mobs to bring them up to spec. It may be several months before all the kinks are worked out.The upside is that we now know a lot more about what the problems are and how to fix them. Weve got builders looking at areas now and doing test changes and updating areas to see how the new tools are working.When were done with this, we expect it to be a major improvement to high level game play, making it on par with the low level player experience on the islands.Ill post more updates over time as the work progresses. Once we get this all under control, it should help open high level exploring to a lot more players and will really be a positive step forward for an already awesome game

There are no classes. Its not a traditional mush or moo - you dont just control a single character. Your account is kinda like a small company that can buy and sell ships, and have crew members that you can train and assign to ships.Some of the more recent updates were to add basic starports and ship cargo/inventory. Im currently working on ship configurations and hull types at the moment, which is needed to allow for things like engine upgrades and extra cargo pods.

Its not that - I actually dislike the idea at a personal level, because Im very introverted and consider interpersonal drama to be inefficient and a waste of time. In my ideal world and on my ideal ship, everyone works together and people arent idiots.However, I know a good gameplay idea when I see it, and that overrides my feelings on the matter. This sort of thing could add a lot of interesting complexity if done right.

For the Alter Aeon forums and wiki, we decided to tie the account creation process into the account system for Alter Aeon itself. Now, you can only create a new account if you use a registered AA player name and email address. This also helps us keep track of who is posting what - so if somebody decides to be a jerk, we know exactly which character in the game is responsible for it.I know that were a special case and that other places cant do this, but holy cow is it effective. Nod, if youre able to log in his characters from your location and dont have the problem, then it sounds like its his machine somewhere. An uninstall/delete/reinstall would probably do it, unless he somehow hit a hotkey that changes the way his screen reader works. Another option is to go into the worlds/alteraeon/settings directory and delete all the files in there - that way it should start up with all default settings.

Ethin, games that have been made freeware do NOT have the copyright removed from them, nor do they have all license agreements revoked. Those things are still there, and the author can still sue you (and win) if you violate the copyright on it. Do not confuse free with unlicensed. You can absolutely have free things which are still licensed.In fact, the entire linux kernel and all GNU software is exactly like that: its free, but if you violate the copyright on it, the linux guys will destroy you. Its already happened to several small companies that thought they could get away with it.

Locutus - looks like you remembered right about Vastator. He hasnt been logged in for two and a half years though, and weve made a lot of updates and added a lot of stuff since then (theres even a new class!) The level 25-30 range still isnt as smooth as Id like it to be, but it should be a LOT better than it was when you were playing Vastator. Let me know if you still have problems there.

An alias is just a way of creating a short command that expands into a bunch of other commands. You can set them in the game to reduce the amount of typing; for example, I often create an alias for the two letters sa to get gold from a corpse, then sac the corpse.Regarding grouping at high levels, its not required. There will always be a few monsters that you just cant kill on your own no matter how powerful you are, but theres a lot of very high level players that hardly ever group and play solo most of the time.Locutus, what level did you get to before you started running into trouble?

Guys, the problem is in the very first error that you got - the one loading the worlds\alteraeon\settings\charlist.mushz file. For whatever reason, that file is corrupt, and if you delete it, Id expect it to start up ok. If possible though, could you just move the file somewhere else and mail me a copy of it? Rory is perfectly capable of playing Alter Aeon right now. He has full access to the game, and can quest and explore and slaughter mobs as much as he wants. His problem is not that he cant play AA; rather, his problem is that I wont allow him to harass and bother the other players on the game.If he wants to play, he can play. However, he doesnt actually want to play. He wants to irritate other players. As far as Im concerned, he can do that elsewhere.

The funny thing about charisma is that most people thought it was useless and simply thought it was normal that pretty much everything they encountered would attack automatically. High level thieves with high charisma can often walk through an entire area with nary a scratch. Its just not obvious enough for people to think its worthwhile.

Ive seen a few people swap dexterity or strength instead of intelligence so they dont take the mana regen hit. The statswap thing lets you swap any two stats, not just int and chr.

One of the big problems youre going to run into is popularity. If your repository turns out to be popular and widely used, its going to start getting copyright violation notices. Hardly any of the soundpacks out there actually have copyright for all the audio in them, and the packs with more popular common musical pieces are going to get hit hard.Never underestimate the evilness of the RIAA and MPAA.

Actually the easiest way to handle salves and tinctures is to use the brew salve analyze and brew tincture analyze commands. This tells you what you can brew with the herbs you have in your inventory.

I have a lot of fun playing necromage, using minions for my tanking and damage, brewing and bottling potions with the spell components I harvest, getting exp from harvesting teeth, and using hand spells on myself and minions to take out harder creatures. Harvesting teeth gives some extra exp, and bone prison is awesome for taking extra enemies out of the fight until you can handle them. You can also bone prison yourself to hide if necessary.

Ive found that necro as a third class can be helpful, but you cant use it for raw minion firepower. Getting the necro helper skills and spells seems to be the way to go - harvest teeth, skeletal spider for extra damage and to have some weak minion fodder, coldfire for brewable spell components, blood sacrifice for extra mana and exp. At higher levels, soulsteal, demon familiar, corpsecutter, soulforge. While individually these arent that powerful, they can really help fill out other class skills - brewing for example can make use of soulstones, coldfire balls, and things harvested from corpsecutter.This is pretty much normal for any third and lower class - youre going to use it for utility and to fill in gaps, not as your primary source of firepower.

Guitarman, go south out of the Gnomian village until you see a sign post. Look at the sign, and itll tell you to go eastward to find Naphtali and the Haunted Highway. Once you get to the head of the haunted highway, go south.

Jayde, there have been a number of reworks to the Archais quest lines since our discussion on the invis Trow quest belt. I do not know if it is available earlier now or not. It is currently level 22, the same level as the Trow area.As I recall, it was lower level in the past, and my previous reasoning was that we shouldnt just unlock it so that advanced players who are in-the-know can get it early and get a significant advantage over new players who dont know any better. I still think thats good reasoning, and that the issue has probably been addressed since our discussion by making it higher level.

For the record, Rory is a persistent and notorious spammer, and all of his characters are on permanent automatic silence until such time as his behaviour improves. I grant him probationary temporary unsilence from time to time when I am at the terminal and can monitor him. As I have been on vacation for the past week and a half, that has not recently been possible.

The grasshoppers dont have the honeydew, the aphids do. Kill the aphids, sometimes they will be carrying a honeydew. Youll need two honeydews to give to the shopkeeper, and probably more sunflower seeds.

SLJ, distributing copyrighted sounds as part of your game without permission is still illegal in the USA, even if you dont make a profit. You can get in trouble with copyright for distributing them in any way, whether you let someone download it at part of your game, give the sounds to someone on a flash drive, or even play them through a loudspeaker to certain types of audience. Kenzon, its my understanding that the secret to running fast is filtering - basically you want your spam filters turned almost all the way up, so theres less to see and so its easier to keep up. Unfortunately, I dont know the details of how to do that; I use the spam command myself, but I think mush-z also has a filter command and a few other things.
