Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Phil, yes, the song in question was Tony and Maria's duette, one hand one heart. We did do several other things at music school, I did colonel fairfax in Yomen of the guard as I said, and my lady sang in the caboray, a very unfortunate GErman song called zex appeal (people got the joke despite not speaking German), but apparently it was one hand one heart which people remember. Yesterday was fun, albeit we didn't do much. It's really nice to sit down and just have a little space with nobody bothering either of us. I'm reading a rather cute fantasy novel called Giftwish by Graham Dunston Martin which is a little like The Hobbit, which I intend to write a review of (it's a little slow, but it has some awesome magic and a huge sence of fun).We did however go to our local gastro pub for an awesomely nice meal which was great, I had the weerd combination of tiger prawns in garlic to start, duck stir fry (served of all things with amazing hom
e made chips), followed by treacle sponge and custard, plus a long island ice tea. So  quite a mixed nationality meal, but a really! nice one and one my lady enjoyed. I also introduced her to the joys of labyrinth which she liked, though even though i did my best with description (having seen the film a lot and watched it with people like my brother who describe well,), we could really do with an audio described copy for her, sadly Blindmice mart don't have one which is irritating. It's also nice to get back to playing Crazy party and just banging off those little arcade challenges again, indeed I also intend to download rythm rage today since thus far I've only had a short blast of the game and would like to get a little more time with it, nominally to create a db entry, but more just for fun.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Well I'm shattered! My lady and I have finally made it back to my flat in Durham, after lots of performing, running around the world and getting married, indeed I'm now doing a mondo transfer of everything I acquired in the past three months including books, music, audiodramas, wedding photos etc, onto my desktop from an external harddrive, after which I'll have to back it all up onto my backup drive, wooo!Lots of waiting around for transfers but obviously worth doing. Unfortunately the blumminess (as my wife would put it), has already started since Guide dogs phoned me to explain why they need to be contacted by my wife's guide dog school in Germany before they can actually do anything to help her. Well I intend to give them hell over this since frankly they're being burocratic arses at the moment, definitely not what I'm used to. On the plus side, I do now have a new victor, that also means yet more transfers and shenanigan
 s. Hopefully I can fix all of this and have some time for games and relaxing and actually being alone with my lady for a bit since we've been living with other people for months and both feel the need for just a bit of space with each other. the performing however went extremely well, which is good, and hopefully we can find more stuff to do soon enough. We apparently made lots of people cry with the west side story duette, which is actually a good thing .

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Tj, Dolphin have a lot of resources but mostly they either occur in supernova itself or in person, (their phone support is rather good). Actually I'm tempted to take up their offer of building a machine for me and doing the setup of Supernova on it, since i don't necessarily know about the installation and screen reader optimizations on windows 10 and would rather not mess around trying to solve a problem (like the explorer freezing in windows 7), if I can help it.  they also offer to transfer your old data but I'd rather do this myself so I can know where my ff goes provided all the instalation of windows and sn has worked okay. In terms of learning however, I am more concerned with getting it to work the way I! want, than having to change everything in the way I do things. For example, while I probably could live with a sprawling list in the desktop of all shortcuts to things like documents and favourites, and indeed all program icons, I'd rather
not have to do that and would prefer a start menu that stays hidden until I want stufff as I said, since I'm really not into clutter in the interface. Eg, in xp to get to my favourites I just hit ctrl escape and a, I don't have to tab to the desktop or go through a massive list of everything, I also have things like documents separate from other stuff. As I said it does seem the modern convention in interfaces goes to far more sprawling and far less  compartmentalization. We'll see though, it's not the immediate problem, actually I'm a little worried since I'm awake very early and have lots of performing to do today, a couple of bits of west side story plus the oberon vanwebber excert, still it's amazing what coffee and adrenaline can do .

Hah. I'm probably one of the few people who really doesn't mind vista. yes it's a resource hog, but it's been pretty good for me. As far as program files, in Windows 10 I've found the easiest way to get there is to hit Windows key e and get there through windows explorer. From there you can pin stuff to your desktop, and generally do whatever you would do otherwise. Same thing goes for the documents folder, music, etc.

Phil, why do you use Vista? I found a rather interesting way of passing that operating system by, but people told me that it was a nightmare to use. Dark, remember that there are lots of tutorials for learning to use Windows 10 with a screen reader. I haven't heard of any that Dolphin has made, but there are general ones that apply to most screen readers, though learning to use it should not present too much of a problem.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Wel I did yomen last night and to my surprise my voice behaved and people actually liked my acting. There was one rather funny bit where fairfax, who's been got out of being beheaded by being disguised as the son of the sergeant of the guards, finds the sergeants daughter is very interested in him, her brother! He even offers to guard her from unwanted attentions, which involved lots of kissing from her supposed brother! and the audience loved it, though I did have to assure the lady playing the guard's daughter (as well as the girl that fairfax ends up with), that my wife, who is a performer in her own right, wouldn't mind, actually people said I was a better actor since I'd got married which was extremely nice . I've definitely seen those mariages you mean rob with one very controlling partner or the lady constantly trying to change
the man, there's an interesting book on the subject which explains about how people get trapped into sterriotypical rolls, man as provider, woman as home maker. Fortunately my lady and I just click quite well in most domestic arrangements and we're both very considerate and indeed polite to each other, in fact with us it's more the other way around us having to democratically decide who does what and what we're doing with neither of us wanting to be dictatorial, indeed things are very very! equal between us.Indeed as regards Phil's list: 1: Actual walking happens  together each with our respective guide dog, but taking both dogs downstairs to the run to do their business varies, usually in the mornings for example one of us will make tea and coffee while the other takes the dogs (especially if we're both sleeping in).2: Physically impossible given the size of the loo in our flat and the fact that the bathroom (ie the room with
the bath), is a separate entity. 3: None of your business . 4: aCtually it works out more on who wants to sleep on which side and where the plugs are. 5: I am usually the one who goes as far as cooking as we usually do, though my lady tends to get out stuff, set the table, get drinks etc, or pass me things when I do stir fry. 6: Separate rooms also work, which we do sometimes just so that we can get a break from wearing earbuds (we're both wearing them right now, me on this machine my lady reading). 7: Yes this does usually happen, though I admit given that my lady is tiny working out portion sizes to both compensate the fact she eats less than I do and not be mean has been interesting.8: less of a concern with bottles.9: My lady likes liquid soap, I prefer bars, so not a problem. 10:  The first thing I did when my
lady moved in was buy her an Iphone ad show her how to use it. It still needs an apple Id authorizing, which we've not been able to do since she's not had an email address, but it is fine for calling.

This is down from 245 pounds. I have honestly never felt better. But with the cookies, I usually have 4 at best, and that's usually after working out, pushing myself over my limits in the process. Don't also forget about the willpower that accompanies the cookies and other ice cream and chippy runns as well. For example, tonight, I was going to revvle in the single freedumness that is my life and dig rite into my colvers custard quart, not stopping until I was in some sort of crazy sugar coma. well, all I did was look at the container for a minute, then place it rite back into the freezer. But, if I eventually for some strange reason, wish to slam on the pounds and become a blimp, I'll definitely mannige to do that in a shortish amount of time. Dark,Yes the critical intravertion requirements are:1. One person walking one dog at a time.2. One person only in the lav when using the water closet.3. 2 people in the bathtub or shower if mutually agreed on.4. The female gets the side of the bed closest to the lav.5. Two people in the kitchen cooking is one too many.6. Wearing headphones when reading books or playing games keeps the non-reader/player from packing up and leaving.7. Always ask permission when eating the last piece of pie or cake.8. The person who empties the milk carton has to open the new one.9. The person who finishes the bar of soap must replace it with a new bar.10. Each person has a cellphone and a portable handset for land line calls if that still exists.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Aprone, with folders what I notice is that the start menu on windows 7 (don't know about 10 as yet), seems to not be a streight up list updown  that you can navigate with the arrows, up and down for changing items, right arrow for opening subfolders within those items. It seems that the layout is all over the place, up down left and right with random locations  even when lists are selected in explorer by default. Indeed even when using the searchbox you don't get subfolders of shortcuts to tidy things into, complicated even more by the fact that things change order according to most recent use or recommendations or whatever. Indeed my lady doesn't use the start menu at all as I said and I had to create desktop shortcuts by going through explorer.I'm fairly confident I can find a way to live with windows 10, even if it means huge amounts of customization of the interface to my liking, provided I can find the options for said customization
s, indeed I suspect I'll be asking questions on the forum at that stage to know where settings are. @Rob, I'm not so much a grand opera singer as I am light opera, musical theatre and comedy with bits of art song and grand opera throne in, indeed I'm just about to go and do fairfax in yomen of the guard, which will be awesome even though my voice isn't exactly behaving this week as I would like. I agree on being adult and getting the stuff you want, though also bare in mind you need to be responsable and make sure you don't end up a fat bastard through all the cooky eating ::D. Oh, and btw, I can personally confirm it is absolutely and entirely possible to be married and still do what you want when you want, or at least it has been for me and my lady, then again both of us get on extremely well with each other even down to boring but necessary practical stuff (like when to have cookies), and especially when we both need to go off and do o
ur own thing, which is one major advantage of being married to someone with similar intravertion requirements to yourself .

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Dark I'm convinced this must be a screen reader issue and not a windows one.  The things you've described about shortcuts and folders are exactly the same from windows XP up to the latest windows 10.  I continue to make my own folders and shortcuts for everything, without changing how I've done that since the days of XP.  It must be that the screen readers themselves are altering how things are being handled, rather than windows itself being any different.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Hmmm, documents folder being hard to get to strikes me as annoying, since i use my documents a lot for writing many things reviews, notes work, poetry etc aside from the few games and such that like to save in there, though I'd like to turn off the uac thing altogether if possible. %90 of all of the problems I've had on xp have been due to user account locking, definitely a case of security that inconveniences more than it helps. I'm glad the C drive itself is still usable though.  I know the start menu and program groups have gone which is really irritating, since I always liked organizing my program shortcuts in the start menu on xp according to whattype of thing they are, eg, I have an audiogames folder then games grouped by developer, also a text games folder and one for media programs. it's just a personal thing but I much prefer shelving and organizing my stuff this way than being reliant on a search function, it makes it far easier to s
ee what I have and get to what where, indeed on xp the only time I use desktop shortcuts is when creating shortcut keys for stuff I need often such as outlook express. As though the start menu in 7 was something of a pest and I've heard the one in `10 is considerably worse, I'm guessing I'll probably just have to do as my lady does and create a hole bunch of desktop folders and subfolders, including ones for things like favourites. That's actually one thing I don't like about the Iphone, the fact that organizing shortcuts isn't easy and a fairly minimal process, (only one level of subfolders, a limited amount of information per page and needing to constantly scroll to new pages and flick through etc). I know there is a modern tendency with information to throw as much at the screen  as possible and let the user visually scan and pick out what they want (or touch with a touch screen), I've seen it in tree diagrams in programs, rib
bons, desktop interfaces on both mac and windows and even . I prefer though myself the older system of having stuff you can shove in lots of compartments and submenus until you need it, it just feels more tidy and also means your not looking through a bunch of things to find  what you want or being reliant on a searchbox and auto complete all the time.

You will find that it is a little more difficult to get to folders such as the C-drive compared to XP, but it is very easy to do. In fact, the Documents folder is harder to get to than the C-drive. User Account Control is still a thing, but all you need to do when you encounter a UAC dialog box is to press CTRL+Y.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Good news about male and winamp, indeed if male is closer to outlook express I'll be pleased. Ribbons are a pest, another great idea that everyone apart from microsoft dislike but we're stuck with because everyone apart from microsoft dislike them and because changing the interface makes people think it's a big new modern os with new functions when effectively the old one was better .In fairness though in windows explorer I don't actually use the menus as much once the thing is setup. Mostly I use shortcuts for copy and paste and the like and the applications key to perform common file operations like unzipping, mailing, playing in winamp etc.I'd be interested to know though which bits of the interface were locked. When installing on windows 7 I noticed I needed to turn off all the uac admin rubbish to install anything, even older g
ames like Jim Kitchin's. I also wonder about getting to folders like favourites of ie and program file folders to monkey with them, since I to do backups and transfers and such (no I don't trust this to the os, I like to make sure of things myself), indeed I prefer to use my own folders for lots of things, eg, I have C:\music and C:\audio folders for music and audiobooks, as well as one for text games. I never like the windows practice of putting lots of things in the documents folder that actually aren't documents, it always seems crazy to me.What you say about locking the system though is a trifle worrying, indeed I noticed how the newer version of Vipmud now stores all the mud packs and sound in documents rather than in the main program folder which is annoyingly messy. Either way I'll have several months to think about this since I need to finish my phd first and I don't want to risk document or formatting incompatibilities with newer
versions of ms word or the like.Music school is okay if a little stressful, I have an opera class this afternoon and no opera to sing with me so am running around searching for music.

Quite a lot of good news for you, Dark. From what I have heard, the Mail interface is extremely fluid and uncluttered, not like Outlook. Winamp, also from what I have heard, works on Windows 10 just fine, and you can show file extensions very easily. One thing that you may find a cause of concern is that Windows Explorer changed in Windows 8 to use the ribbon rather than traditional menus. Can you believe that next year the ribbon will be ten years old?

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Tj, It is good to know about the male program, actually something positive in windows 10,I hope it has a similarly uncluttered interface to Outlook express since I am emphatically not! a fan of outlook. As regards lists and thumbnails, it's good if lists are back, however my lady was extremely! irritated in windows 7 by a continual problem where windows explorer would freeze for no reason, the fix for this was something in the folder options regarding showing of icons and thumbnails (I don't recall the setting exactly, it was one of those check boxes in the view menu). It is fixed now but was a pest to solve, also apparently not a supernova specific issue since the fix came from a jaws user. I also hope windows 10 lets me mess around with showing of file extentions and the like, but we'll see, that is a problem for later since I'm not thinking of getting a new machine immediately, indeed I might try and demo one first. I wonder if Winamp ru
ns on windows 10? I suspect not because of the so called upgrade, but while vlc is okay I much prefer winamp's layout, also it's ability to quickly play lots of random formats, particularly the more unusual game music ones without all that artist genre add to library put this in your playlist star rating nonsense that programs like windows media player and even worse Itunes have so much of. I've been using vlc to watch dvds which has worked fairly well, so it wouldn't be a disaster, but I still like winamp's ease of access. Well music school is hard work though fun, running around learning many things. I'm being King Oberon, singing a gorgious duette from vanwebber's opera "oberon" with my lady as puck, though hopefully we'll have a chance to perform it since the chap running that class said there was a possibility there might not be time. I'm also colonel fairfax in Yomen of the guard, which is great since I
love G, though fairfax is a right royal git, though he does have some fun moments.I wish my voice was working better, though again since I've not really sang much recently that makes sence. actually I'm now even more than ever worried about finding places to go and do some singing since the music school route which is how most people get into things,  just won't work for me since the people who run music school are scuzbags who don't like visually impared people, ameter dramatics is only as good as the director. What my lady and I need is a professional director willing to actually be a reasonable human being and not a prejudiced arsehole.

To clarify a couple of things, Windows 10 includes a rebranded and redesigned Outlook Express--it's called Mail. And, unless I am misunderstanding your point about lists and thumbnails and the like, all versions of Windows allow files to be shown in lists, thumbnails, icons, etc.--it's up to what you prefer--I think most blind people prefer lists with the details shown to the right of the item name. This is definitely possible, and I think that it is the default behaviour in Windows 10 anyway. As for searching for things rather than going and digging for them, both happily coexist in Windows 10.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Rob, yes, getting out and living on your own is a good thing, I did it when I was nineteen. Ironically there's a bit of an issue currently since my parents (in particular my mum), would rather like my lady and I to move closer, but that probably isn't going to happen, though right now we're still in the process of waiting for something or other to turn up to determin where we actually are! going to live. As regards the clay situation, again I'm most impressed at people who make stuf. I never had exactly that sort of manual dexterity or ability to make things myself. I do recall once at my nuts primary school we got a fairly whacky  teacher who was bent on showing everyone the practicality of working with wood and everyone made a set of salad servers by gluing ply wood together which my mum actually still has, though being as I don't really eat salad and prefer veg cooked it was a bit superfluous to me .Music school is crazier than usual since there is lots of music for me to learn, not a problem since I learn fast, but owing to sorting visas and huge amounts of other things my lady and I both just haven't had the occasion., though we have had a huge amount of congratulations on being married which is nice. ironically the first thing we've setup to do is a gorgious duette from the secret guarden musical (yes the one based on the 1906 Kids book),  which is all about a man talking to the ghost of his dead wife and is pretty dam extreme! yes, just the thing after being married, thinking of your wife dying which is probably the worst thing I can imagine thus far so it should hit hard.As to Windows, @Aaron, Beatstar is one example where save data is in the documents folder, however for a lot of other games save data and extra packs and stuff are in the program folders themselves, for example wh
en I get back to my flat I'll need to copy the sauvgard file from my xp laptop's crazy party install into the one on my desktop, and I'm not sure about file management in post xp windows. Windows 7 I would consider, although there are things in windows 7 I still don't like and it's taken a bit of wangling to get my lady's win 7 machine to behave, particularly as regards thumbnails and windows explorer, (and the download's function in ie11 still seems weerd),  however I don't want to be in the same fix compatibility wise in a few years, if I must have a version of windows I don't want, it might as well be the latest version of windows I don't want . In particular I will really! miss a user friendly email program like outlook express. I've tried thunderbird and outlook, but both are a right royal pain interfa
ce wise and lack the simplified structure of express with it's three tabs, storage system contacts list, both also, as seems to be a trend in modern windows all the eamils work entirely by auto complete rather than letting you actually scan information yourself. Indeed, I don't like microsoft's tendency to work by search boxes and most recommended this that and the other, what happened to organizing my own stuff? I do know there is a freeware version of outlook express which I might have a look at. Ironically, my lady doesn't use any search functions of windows 7, she asked me to create desktop shortcuts to stuff like favourites, documents, folders she needs etc, effectively creating a start menu for her without using the actual start menu . From what I've seen the interface for windows 10 is even more annoying in terms of explorer, an
d I don't think you can have lists either. Still it's something we'll see and not an immediate problem, albeit if I hadn't been so busy getting married etc I'd probably have sorted such things out by now and have either a mac or a windows 10 machine.

Aprone,If your store bought clay is Crayola Modeling Clay, it is mixed with special non-drying oils so that it can be shaped again and again. Also, Hobbycraft Plasticine is a non-toxic, modelling material. It is made from limestone, lard, food colouring, petroleum jelly and a secret ingredient. It was first made in England around the late 1880's. It is oil based, so it will never harden, short of putting it in the freezer. But it will soften again when it warms up. These can't be air dried or oven baked because of the oil in them. That is probably why your mold blew up.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Hey all. This post got quite long, so if you love to read, grab your favorite snack and drink combo of choice, and sit back and enjoy the ride. Well, I'm actually just writing what comes to mind. Everything here is very interesting on a readers end of things, especially Aprone's posts regarding his work with iorn and mettal. I always find molding to be interesting. I used to do similar stuff back when I was in highschool, under loads of supervision haha. It wasn't metttals though, it was a glass type material. But at the beginning, it was some type of clay or something like that, as when I first started, it was just a huge clay like block on a mettal sheet . The material, whatever it was, couldn't be hand molded. You needed the proper machines and tools. I m
ade a nice sized bowl that, apparently could be placed into the microwave and used to eat food out of. You could also store and refridgerate food in it too. I haven't tested that yet and I don't wish to, as it took me alittle over half the school year to make, 8 years ago. I don't have it at this moment as it's still back at my old place, and we have yet to find it in one of many family art project boxes in the basement lol. I used to put my spare change in it, before I realized that all my change can be taken, despite me placing all of my change into my cool bowl. It then became a candy dish. Haha. Speaking of candy dishes, I also made a wooden m and m dispenser. This was supposed to be a novelty project, that actually worked and turned out to be rather useful. You filled it via one of those glass jamm jars that you screw the mettal tops onto, minus the mettal top. The ring part of the mettal top was glewed into the top of the wooden part of the dispenser, so yo
u screwed the wooden half to the jar, then flipped it over so that the jar faces upwards. The actual mettal top was punched out, leaving just the ring piece. But once the jar is filled and the dispenser is properly assembled, simply turn the wheel and enjoy your m and m's, which were dispensed into the wooden base. I still use it to this day.Other than that, I've been getting used to living in my own place. I moved into my apartment this passed July, and so far it's been pretty interesting. Now that I'm out from under my parent's wings and standing on my own 2 feet, I can finally start to create goals and things for my future without rodeblocks getting in my way, which were caused by living in the care of a family member as an adult. but that's all been eliminated, so now all future vistas have been opened for me. The only thing that can hinder and slow down my progress in getting a job, college, raising a family etcetera, are the indeviduals at t
he vocational rehabillitational agencys. They haven't been as bad or as stubbern as they could be, so I currently can't complain haha.As for computers and the likes,At dark, your post about still running xp and finding issues with program compatabillity have enspired me to take invintory and put it here.Let's see here. I have 2 dell laditude d820 laptops which run xp, both with all stock parts. same with my laditude d830, which has all stock parts, but actually runs Linux. The d830 used to run xp, but I converted it to Linux in 2012, as I had no use for 3 machines running xp. not to mention, somehow that machine had gotten some keylogger that just would not budge. I could throw every single scanner, free or payed at this keylogger, and it just stuck. It effected everything, from the wireless card switch, to the trackpad section to the keyboard. It was bad. But it works super smooth running linux now though haha. But apart from the 3 laditudes, I
have another dell, the xpsl702x, which runs windows7 x64. I have 2 macs, 1 2014 macbook pro13 inch which is currently running OSX Yosemite, and a nice old 15 inch macbook which runs OSX Leopard. Aah, my first mac. I still love the 15 inch, and I still do use it at times.I also have some other desktop machines, 1 is a dell demention 9100 running xp, and another is a rather old dell which, believe it or not, runs windows98. All of these machines, including the clasic units, work perfectly. And they all have the original stock parts. But, we can't forget about this Lenovo Thinkstation which is the bred and butter of my studio, and the main central computer for my network. This thing runs windows7 x64, and has gigs and gigs of space, both ram and harddrive. Quad-core is written all over the processer, and all of this, along with the hd grafics card and the dedicated 2 gigs of video memmory, definitely puts 85 percent of my machines to shame. This unit is more than perfe
ct for gaming, especially if you're an avid gamer like myself. I am actually thinking of adding way more ram to this Lenovo unit. Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Nocturnus I sympathise with the pc issue, I'm going to need to tangle with windows 10 myself later this year because xp is finally! getting inconvenient in terms of not working with stuff, or at least inconvenient enough to make the annoyence of the newer systems worth it, albeit I still believe Microsoft should've simply upgraded xp to the so called better newer hardware and will likely be doing a lot of swaring. I'm afraid I've rethought the mac issue, simply because on a space basis I just don't have room for two machines, and still Windows has most chance for working software and games and such. Still that can only happen when my thesis is finished since I don't want to risk office issues with a peace of work that has taken me nearly 9 years before it's actually done in november, also because through a concatination of circumstances from devorce to insurance my lady is skint and can't get any money in britain and because the government
have the bright idea that a person who is married is worth less than a single person cash is going to be a little tight for a while. One thing I do like about xp even still is file management, which seems to be a dirty word today. I love the ability to actually get into the program folders for things like crazy party or beatstar and save the actual save files onto my backup harddrive. As to technology more generally, I've never been against blind specific tech as long as it A, does what it is supposed to do and B, doesn't cost the earth for a similar function to a mainstream device. As I've said before I grappled with Itunes for two solid years after buying my Iphone in 2012, but the "our way or else!" way it worked, the way it was nearly impossible to get stuff out of it once bought or imported, the way I had to hit it with a crow bar and mess with playlist functions I didn't care about just to get it to play audiobooks and music and
other things from my collection, the annoying tree structure and in general really clunky and inconvenient way it wouldn't do what I wanted just made it a right royal pain. Actually for all I love many functions of the Iphone, why it doesn't have a streight Usb transfer for files and folders and why your forced to use this bloated hog of a program I don't know.when the heading labels went in ios 12 that was the last straw, and I confess I've absolutely adored! my victor stream ever since, the easy usb transfer, the portability, and above all the way it actually lets me preserve sensible folders for stuff. I do know other people who use Itunes without hassle (though admitedly most have macs), which is fare enough, indeed I can see that if you start off from scratch doing everything through itunes that's okay, albeit I prefer a little more freedom in my organization and setup than apple seems to appreciate.Either way, the Victor was a case
where the mainstream option was just not convenient to use and I'm quite surprise how much I miss the thing now. I actually know the feeling of being coopted for events, though in my case it gets a trifle more annoying since my parents seem to assume that singing at an old folks home or church service with a kariaoki backing is some sort of substitute for propper on stage performance with an actual accompanyist, but since they can't find occasions for me to do that they're inclined to set up events and then insist me into doing them and go on about how suted I am for that, it is slightly annoying me having to remind them that I'm a classical tenor not a bar lounge singer . I'm actually hoping that is one thing my lady and I will get to do more of, since right now my efforts at getting into performance have been patchy at best, albeit
at the moment I'm a little worried owing to lots of just generally life specific things to sort out, in particular a looming cloud of where we're actually going to live eventually. I'm off to music school tomorrow which should be good, albeit I feel so unprepared it's unbelievable. i'll take this laptop with me, but I don't know how much time I'll have for anything at all, from gaming to posting on the forum given I'm going to be singing and running around for several hours a day.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Phil, I was just using some modeling clay that isn't specifically sold to be fired.  Now that I see how hard it is to get it dry enough, without truly firing it, I will probably go that route.  I probably won't be buying that specific clay, since I'm too cheap to spend money on most things, but I will toss together a kiln and fire the clay I already have before I use it again with the molten metal.  Haha!  I also have a large tub of unprocessed clay that I dug up years ago.  That probably won't fire as well since it will contain more impurities, but then again, I have like 80 pounds of it and can afford for several molds to fail.  If I fire the store bought stuff I'm currently using, then I can't just process it back down into usable clay afterwards, which is what I've been doing for years.  I've
had the same batch of clay for easily 10 years, using it in projects and then processing it back down into a usable form when I was done.  Firing is pretty much a 1 way street, and I'm not in love with the thought of permanently using this stuff up on one-time-use metal molds.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

It seems like there's a gaping hole in the market for hardware and software with the things people like about the older stuff, but with all the security and power of modern technology... so why is no one trying to pick up that pile of money lying on the ground? Is there something I'm not seeing, or has the world truly gone mad?

I think that, although we are slowly becoming able to use more and more mainstream technology, there will still be a need for some blindness-specific devices, e.g. braille displays. Sometimes, it is just more convenient to use a digital book player such as the Victor Reader Stream than an iPhone app, while at other times, the opposite is true. It is nice to have choice about what we use.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Aprone,Reading through your posts had me nodding, because while your talents and amounts of knowledge and resources are different from my own, I do know the feeling to some extent, having been expected to provide musical entertainment for weddings, funerals, graduation and birthday parties and other trivial family reunion such things on a moment's notice, the most annoying probably being this one time I was asked to teach a kid how to play guitar who went and looked at a ton of youtube videos of other people playing and ignoring everything I said to the point where it almost seemed like he was trying to coach me instead.  In the end, I told him kindly, I hope, to get lost.Between that and fixing people's computers because I know how, or at least, that's what people always seem to think, it can get frustrating.  Oh, and I'm supposed to have a bunch of software lying around, but I think I've hashed this subject far too many times.
; the part I didn't cover was the essay writing pleas and the requests to help so-and-so cheat their way through college by texting them answers during exams and such.  I've almost considered making money out of nonsense of this caliber.@Dark,Your bit at the end about how useful things can actually be and how one grows to miss them when they don't have them around reminds me of how much fun and convenience I got out of braille lites and such years and years ago.  My wife has a braille sense with a GPS gadget and a bunch of other features I have yet to messed with, but I'm still of a mind that whatever it takes to get the job done is something we should all respect.  While I prefer a more or less mainstream market nowadays, I don't see anything wrong with victors or even older devices; we actually have a book reader from the library of congress, or whatever this thing is actually called, which a certain 8 month old is very enthused
by for some reason.  Sorry about the kids kicking your seat; I promise they weren't mine.Speaking of children, we're welcoming a third to the family! My last windows PC has finally called it quits, which means I'm doing a lot of nothing nowadays, a somewhat annoying issue given that I'm supposed to be writing up database entries for things... I honestly don't know what happened to it either, save that one day it was working fine, then it started lagging a bit, and then the drive started sounding rather interesting, as if it were microwaving popcorn... There went my crazy party cards and just about everything else. Oh why oh why! It's one of those things where I'm going, do you fix it, or do you buy a new one given you've had this one for nearly three years?  Either way, such things will have to wait until I have the money to do it, thus the mac is getting a lot of abuse from me.  I borrowed a Lenovo thinkpad that
has no numpad and am trying my best to Nocturnise it for all my wants and needs, but sadly, no numpad, a stupid joystick looking thingy in the middle of my keyboard, and an overly sensitive trackpad make this one an annoyance.  They just, don't make PC's like they used to.  I'm dreading windows 10, but I know finding something with 7 is gonna be hard as rocks... Guess we'll see how this one plays out

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Dino, I'd be interested to know about your costume too. I have a lot of friends who are larpers, but have always confined myself to tabletop rp with dice and a gm because I don't like the idea of playing a constantly blind character and not being able to participate in battles or run around fields or cast spells by throwing balls at each other, heck even those larp events which are more like historical reinactment with people doing their own smithing and armor making and camping and what not would be a bit of a pest for someone photonically challenged, or at least they probably would be for me with my less than practical bent to that type of thing . @Aprone, we did get back okay, actualy the plane journey was as good as it could've been given we had the front seats with a massive amount of leg room and a free seat between us, so other than the child who
persisted in kicking my seat, and the general craziness of newark airport (which was so amaizngly corwded and complex it's ridiculous!), it was okay, or at least as okay as could be expected. I actually started playing champion of the gods from choiceofgames on the plane, then realized my iphone was totally lacking charge due to the fact that I was charging the pet chip scanner used to check my guide dogs chip which we bought after the airport found her chip unscannable at christmas, so I had to knock off fairly soon to leave enough charge in case I needed my phone in the Uk, oh and the bloody scanner still! didn't work, though luckily the airport new my dog so that was okay. Still, I'm sorry to have stopped in the middle of champion, which, other than some severely irritatingly stylised dialogue was looking rather fun in a traditional fantasy with a bit of an ancient griek flavour way, hopefully i'll be able to get back to it at some point in th
e future though right now things are a bit crazy and I'm alternating sleeping, learning music and packing like a demon, as well as supporting my lady who has to do the same. Now  unfortunately we've got equal amounts of running around, getting music together for aims music school and such. I've been cast as oberon the elf king and my lady is puck, which should be fun, or at least it will be now I know the bit I'm supposed to learn and sing . We're also doing some bits from westside story including one hand one heart and officer crupkey, crupkey should be awesome since i've asked for the part of the guy who pretends to be a social worker and has the horribly bad falsetto, I'm quite looking forward to squeaking "he's no good!"  . All that being said both my lady and I are rather frazled, and it doesn't help that my victor cable has bust and I've needed to send the hole thing back to humanware for repares, and since I've found it very useful at music school the last two years for portable note taker and also instant music playback device of what I need to sing (well everyone else has their written music to go from), i'm a bit sorry I'll be without it, not the least because I'll miss books, but hay. Humanware have said they'll have it back by wednesday so hopefully I'll not be without for too long. It's amazing how useful certain bits of technology get to the point that being without them is a right royal pest!

I guess I'll need to make another one when I've got more work done on it.Besides that, things have been pretty good. Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Cae, I'll have to check that one with my brother about the Japanese drinks, though I always thought the idea in Japan was rather like that which 18th century ladies used to have in Britain where it was seen as most impolite not to leave at least a little on your plate. Admitedly, this was partly so that you didn't appear to be committing gluttany, and partly for the much more practical reason that often the servants got the left overs so being a greedy git would literally deprive someone of food. Either way, large portions here in AMerica, are really! insanely large. Well not a lot to report other than a severely bashed knee, the acquisition of actually quite a cool bronze unicorn from my inlaws to take back to Britin, and my finally finishing Feist's magician! Really I was glad to finally get through it, since even though there was stuff I liked, in general the book was a disappointment, partiuclarly the generic fantasy elements, shallow chara
cters and occasion when one protagonist took it into his head to object to the gladiatorial games by blowing the hell out of the stadium and everyone in it with his magic, killing all concerned. As I said in my review,   even 20 years ago the idea of a lone maverick taking it into his head that social justice was lacking so destroying a public building with personally acquired weaponry, taking out a lot of innocent bystanders under the belief that they're guilty or some real or imagined social ill is probably not one which will sit well with a modern reader . DEspite stuff I likeed in the book, I really! hope feist improves in whatever of his books I decide to read next. Enspired to actually see what the fussis about regarding pointy horses (though admitedly Guy Garvril Kay did have an incredibly cool one in Fionavar), I'm starting the humourus
collection, zombies vs unicorns, which should be fun .

Aprone, I am mostly jealous of your skills (but not of having to ply exploded zinc fragments from the driveway ). Dark, the 80% rule is a Japanese thing, the idea being to eat until you are 80% full; if you're actually full, you've probably eaten too much, or so the idea goes. Also, last I heard, Japanese drinks are sold at the same price regardless of the size, under the notion that you'd buy the size you want, instead of trying to do some amount of drink vs price optimization. Granted, I don't know if this means smalls are more expensive, or larges are cheaper!

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Cae, first what is the eighty percent rule? I've never heard that one. I was always brought up to clean my plate, though that got severely twisted at my boarding school where not eating whatever was put in front of you was sort of a cardenal sin, which only cemented my utter abhorence at certain things and made for a lot of childhood traumer! . With the exception of something that has the potential to be shared such as a pizza, usually in Britain it is assumed that people will always prefer a large if financially viable, so large drinks or restaurant portions etc are, well just a large portion for one person, eg, a large drink might be around a pint or so,not ridiculously humungus! Conversation is an interesting subject, though as I mentioned my thoughts on that in the thread about the Us I won't repeat myself here. @Aprone I would've
thought making a forge was relatively easy for you, you just need I believe 8 bricks, four lumbers and an iron bar, then set one of your workers going. Admitedly getting the iron is a bit hit and miss given the mining but it's not generally a problem provided you have enough lumber to make the tunnels and can go on replacing your shovels. Oh wait a moment what do you mean that's not how it works in real life! .Actually the project and your execution sound pretty  awesome. Again it makes me regret that through a combination oflack of sight, and more importantly lack of coordination, those sorts of things were never really something I could contribute to. Actually it is really refreshing in a society that only sees most people in terms of their ability to practically make anything as parts in a gigantic factory machine for the production of prophet for
a few individuals to learn there are still people doing these sorts of creative things, it gives me hope for the future, especially when the zombocalypse occurs .A bit of a minerly stressful day given first I was getting a hard time telephonically for not ringing my parents for a week, then I was getting a hard time because my mum was attempting to book Mrs. Dark and I a recording studio session just after we finish music school (when we'll both be utterly shattered after singing for a week), and then it turned out one of my in laws is in hospital having extreme amounts of leg surgery so we had to dash off and see him. And despite wishing to collapse a bit I've just had a pair of swimming trunks thrust into my hand so we're off for a swimm once again!

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Dark there are times I wish I Didn't know how to do all of that stuff!  Everyone from in-laws to cousins regularly call upon me to help with household repairs and other manual labor type stuffs.  Not that I'm complaining, I like to help, but every once in a while I consider gifting another relative one of those "home repair for dummies" book sets and twiddling my thumbs evilly while I wait for my plan to work.Well CAE, I'll toss something new into the mix and maybe it will jog your memory and you'll know what you were going to talk about.  I just finished a fairly annoying clean up after a project failed.Jennifer has a cousin who has an interest in backyard metal working, more specifically, he wants to make some tools/items by pouring molten metal into self made molds.  (Heh, firefox says "moulds" is spelled incorrectly so I went with "molds")  I don't have a proper foundry and haven'
;t had spare cash to build one, so I've been making due with what I have... a steel dish shaped fire pit.Because I don't get to spend time with the cousin very often, I have been trying to work the bugs out of the process by myself, to make the most of when we are together.  A few weeks ago I had time to melt down some zinc (our aluminum stand-in until we have a proper foundry (which is our iron stand-in since it's unlikely we can make a foundry capable of melting iron)) but I didn't have an actual mold handy.  Earlier in the week I had a little time to shape out a clay mold for a big pair of pliers, and setting it aside to slowly dry.  Today I believed the mold had set long enough, so I once again fired up the foundry and forced the neighbors listen to the sound of my shop vac, haha.I wasted a ton of my charcoal because I had the blower incorrectly positioned without realizing it, causing most of the heat to be sent away from where I
wanted it.  That was a bummer because I'm using charcoal I made myself previously, and I only have a limited supply before I'd have to spend hours making more.  Aprone is too cheap to buy charcoal, as we all expect, but also it's because the charcoal briquets used for cook outs are not real charcoal.  Those are real charcoal ground up, mixed with sand and a few other things, and then compressed into that briquet shape.  Good for low heat cooking, but not ideal for a foundry. So once I had the blower back on track, it didn't take long to get things ready.  I slid my clay mold out from where it had been heating up and I put on my blacksmith gloves (the only safety equipment I use because I'm too cheap to buy any and the gloves were ones I Found a decade ago).  You have to scrape slag off of the surface of the molten metal, and I personally use a long gutter nail that fell off of my house years ago.  One of these days I
need to find something better, because it is pretty terrible for the job.  Today I wasn't thinking and picked up the nail with my non gloved hand a few minutes after scraping the slag!  Ever notice how you can't drop something fast enough when it's that hot?  Like time slows down and you're waiting for stupid frig'in gravity to take it away from your open hand, but the hot nail just slowly saunters its way away when it feels like it.So yeah, I felt sorta stupid after that mistake.Next I assumed my usual metal pouring position, which is an idiot crouching on his driveway, wearing a blacksmith glove on one hand and holding a garden hose in the other, clutching it as if it were a defensive weapon.  So I start to pour, and wouldn't you know it, the clay mold wasn't entirely dry all the way through.  Crap.A rapid series of loud pops send chips of clay and molten drips of metal in all directions.  I of
course jumped back and readied the hose to defend myself if necessary, but there was nothing I could do to save the mold.  It took about 20 seconds before the violent popping stopped, and it looked like a bag of glitter had been mugged and violently beaten in a dark alley.  Tiny metal drips had sprayed everywhere, and they tended to harden in the frantic splash shapes they made upon impact.  So basically tiny dots of metal, with razor sharp spikes and edges sticking up everywhere.  I spend more time barefoot in my back yard then I do wearing shoes, plus I have 2 small nephews, so my only option was to clean it all up.I spent a lot of time slowly crawling around the driveway with a flat screwdriver and pliers, prying each splatter off of the concrete.  It was Not fun.The final piece of bad news is that the mold was shredded.  I knew it wouldn't survive the pouring, but the goal is to have a good metal cast in exchange for killing the c
lay mold.  What I had was a mangled mess of metal, sort of in the shape of the 2 pliers halves.  The escaping pockets of steam had shredded it as it was hardening, so there is nothing I can do to salvage it.  Yep, that was a huge waste of time and effort, but at least I can tell mys

Hmm.Yesterday was staffing at LCB, which means they pick a few students and put them in a room with all their teachers and they give a review/critique/whatever of how things have been going. I can sum up all of them in four words: "Doing well. Talk more!" But since life is not an RPG where you walk up to an NPC and press the talk button and either get information or a menu of possible things to say, it does about as much good as it did all the other times I've heard it, which is to say, .(Yes, "large" usually means "too big for one person to eat, but they'll probably do it anyway, because that's how we demonstrate dominance, or something". It wouldn't be so bad if this wasn't a clean-your-plate culture, where the 80% rule is hardly even heard of.)

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

@Brian, I've seen the odd episode of Bleache. It sort of looked like a more serious version of Dragonball with swords and spirits instead of martial arts and sort of semi futuristic craziness, which isn't a bad thing, although I've got so many other things to actually watch or read or go through it's not on the priority list for the moment, heck when we get back to England I want to start into season 4 of buffy the vampire slayer. @Aprone, With the house moving it sounds like your life is turning into Dog who hates toast, having to move the banana to family monster toaster room etc .  Seriously I do sympathize, there was a point when as a child it seemed my parents were taking it in turns to redecorate each room of our house which of course necessitated moving all the contents of one room into another room, there was one point my mum would
grab anyone who came through the door, hand them a sheet of sand paper and get them sanding her douglas fir doors, up to and including the local vicar . I'm always impressed at people who can do all of the carpentry/electrics/plumming type of stuff. Other than obvious things like changing bulbs I've never really had a practical aptitude that way, apart from the fact that stuff like rewiring a plug is dam difficult without vision, so have generally restricted myself to more interlectual/artistic type of things. As to how the new wife is, well who ever said I had an old wife?   actualy scratch that, there is no oold wife!" there never has been, and that hole at the bottom of the guarden is dug up just because it needed digging, and what do you mean that there are reports of a missing woman seen around my house! she's not missing, she just
went into the guarden that's all. It wasn't her fault, she had a liking for mushrooms, yes, perfectly ordinary organic mushrooms, no I never knew tthey were poisonous, how could I have known! You think I went to all the trouble of researching mushroom types then growing them from spaws then filtering them to extract the poison for a poisonous mushroom pizza? I just wanted to give the lady a nice meal and a good rest, she wwas so tired after all. H, methinks I'd better stop this line of conversation before  I say something incriminating since I'm perfectly innocent and would never even think about murdering anyone, might do it, perhaps have done it, but wouldn't even think! about it! .Seriously, my lady is extremely well (and since she emphatically dislikes even normal mushrooms the above digression is entirely pointless). Aga
in I don't have a lot to report other than relaxing and generally spending time on things. Yesterday we all went swimming which was nice, and my lady had the distinct pleasure of seeing me act like a total nutcase as I attempted a canonballl! ACtually the diving board was cool and I did manage to remember the diving I used to do. I'm not exactly the most athletic of people when it comes to jumping around, but that was fun, as was the swimming. We then went for icecream and I forgot the cardinal rule of living in this country never! order a large, since they're gigantic! I'm still reading through magician by Feist. It has actually picked up when we got into the second world, indeed to say that medkemia is pretty much just D land, kalawal is remarkably unique both in culture and even in wildlife. Feist even shows some glimmerings in the direction of character, albeit I don't like the hole women who don't like someone and then randomly do a co
mplete switch and suddenly fling themselves into the arms of male characters for no readily apparent reason. That being said some of the magic stuff is fun, even if I don't exactly rate Feists' description of such. I probably will do a review of magician, just because I think it probably needs someone to point out the book's strengths and weaknesses rather than just goin "this is the best thing ever!" or "this is the worst thing ever!" as inevitably seems to happen, especially with books that have been around for a long while and have something of cult status about them.

Well well, for me, I've been going through some computer upgrades, been playing with the new Ubuntu-based BASH shell that Windows 10 now includes, and overall being a weird person. Want proof of how weird I've been lately? Hewre's and extremely strange Microsoft Eva phoneme demo gone terribly wrong. Lets just say, don't annoy Enormous Eva! Just a warning, though, for those who have sensitive ears, fear of language or some other condition, it does contain a bit of swearing. But otherwise, enjoy. https://www.dropbox.com/s/nawvcj8h7geel … g.mp3?dl=1 #audio Oh, wait, #audio? This is not Twitter! *shakes himself*

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

It's a windows server, yeah.  I use a linux server (through Yahoo) to handle my actual website and about half of the account security stuff.  I've debated moving everything over to my personal server to save a bit of money and also stop all those lousy times when Swamp/Castaways won't sign in, which is an issue with Yahoo's side of the security checks.  For the time being, keeping things separate helps me feel a bit more secure because someone would need to access data from both servers to really comprise anything important, and that is a lot less likely to ever have happen.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

At Aprone, do you have the server running under linux or windows server? Just curious, or does the server code just run over the top of windows 7? I have always been meaning to ask that. Also, hope your doing well man, it's been a while since you have been around.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Brian, I have it estimated down to about $0.29 per day in electricity to run the actual server.  Extra internet charges to have the higher upload/download speeds are harder to estimate.  Since I would have the internet even without the server, the extra I pay to bump it to a higher plan could be the amount to consider, but it's hard to really split it up that way fairly.  If you already have internet at your house, running a server can be as cheap as $8.50-$9 per month.  Keep the monitor off (LOL, I just thought about where I'm typing this message!) because the extra power from the screen can raise that cost by 50%-100% depending on various factors.

@aprone, just to know, keep a computer running a server is more cheap than paying dns services? Just curious.

Re: Monthly chat August 2016

Dark, glad to hear things are going well with the new wife.  I feel like I've been away for a long time, during my latest "Aprone falls away from the audio game scene" episode.  I am trying to now ease my way back into my old routine of checking email, checking these forums, and coding.Weeks ago I had made an extremely unpopular admin decision on Swamp, that had a group of people in an absolute uproar.  To make a long story short, enough people were chucking insults and hate mail at me that I threw my hands up and said "F this."  I stopped working on the new Swamp code I'd been working on for a while, and took a little time away from the community.  I didn't plan on taking a very long break, but other stuff found a way to keep me away longer.A good friend of mine lost his house and needed to move
in with us (my wife and I), so a ton of time was spent organizing and moving things around in preparation.  I work on so many different kinds of projects that someone could easily label me as a hoarder.  The house is filled with everything from wires and gears, to sheets of scrap metal and plastic.  My poor wife, haha!  Our plan was to give the friend half of our garage space, a room in the basement, and extra storage space in an adjacent room.  Sounds easy enough but freeing up that space meant a major undertaking of cleaning out the whole house, organizing, and throwing away a ton of stuff I'm least likely to actually use any time soon. The Swamp/Castaways server was going to have to be moved into a different room, which meant running a new electrical outlet to where it would go.  My basement only has the 1 "finished" room and the rest have only a single electrical outlet each.  Cable (TV) also had to be fed through the ceili
ng and walls to run it into the room my friend would be staying in.  I'm too cheap to pay an actual electrician, so all of these changes were mine to handle.  After tearing up and replacing the carpet in his new room, and replacing the door frame that the previous owners installed themselves incorrectly (holy crap that was a pain), everything would have been set.  It was at that time that my wife was willing to move our second floor (a bungalow style room) down into a room on the main floor, while moving the main floor's contents to this new basement room.  The change would give our friend the entire second floor of the home, which has more space.  The friend was quite excited about the new idea, so that became the new plan.I'm sure many of us can imagine the effort needed to carry chairs, sofas, entertainment centers, and book she
lves between rooms of a house (and between floors).  I'll spare those details, but will comment that the 200+ pound electric treadmill was the least fun to move 2 floors from the upstairs to the basement. An internet cable had to be ran up to the second floor through a wall, and the only way to make it work was to cut the end off.  Of the million tools, a cat 5 cable crimper is not one of them, so that's something I'll fix in a few days. Some close friends invited us up to a lake house, so this whole house altering project was split with a 5 day trip up north.  We had fun, fished, and spent some time on their boat.  Our car has been dying for a long time.  Like, a Long time!  Way back when I did those See Munkey recordings, someone even commented on how terrible my car sounded, haha!  So anyway, the long drive up north brought about a terrible new noise coming from the car, and we had already both wondered if our vehicle
would survive such a trip.  On the drive back, 1 hour from home, the engine blew.  Boom!  Blew a fist-sized hole in the engine and shot metal onto the freeway.  We are now in a new car, which Jennifer is thrilled about, and of which I am nervously optimistic.  Jennifer wanted to lease a brand new car because she has had to deal with our unreliable one for so long, and I've never been a fan of using something I do not own.  When some moron dings up your car you can normally just shrug and live with it, but on a lease I'll have to pay to repair any damage when it gets turned back in.  So yeah, I'm less comfortable about this arrangement. That's about it for me I think.  I apologize to anyone who has been trying to get a hold of me.  Well, I should say I apologize to anyone wanting to get a hold of me for normal reasons.  To people flinging insults and anger, I'm glad you wasted time writing stuff I never
read, haha!    I'm so back logged on missed messages that I believe I'll just hit select all, and delete.  It's a crappy thing of me to do, but realistically I'm not going to go back and read weeks worth of missed stuff.  218 unread emails, 50 "recent" unread skype messages... sheesh, no thank you.  ROFL!

I just created a new Skype account where I'm trying to get the most possible contacts I can without destroying my beloved Mac. So far nobody is adding me. I guess I could post my Skype ID here, but I'd have to see if people are OK with me doing that first. I've also been trying to find Pokémon cristle and hook up Tiler Spivy's lua script to a gameboy emulator so I can play the game, of course, I don't think the script works with voice over. So yeah, that's basically all I've got.

Monthly chat August 2016

Well another month, another monthly chat topic. As per usual, this is the place where we discuss life the universe and everything, cricket robots, the number 42, what your playing/listening/ to/watching/reading, how your life is going, whether you have plans for world domination, if you've had your head bit of by a saber toothed yack or donated your pre frontal lobe to science, that sort of thing. Unusually, I'll say our last months round of assorted metaphorical chin wagging got quite the conversation, so I actually have to reply to several comments from that here. To save people's examination of the conversation, here is a link  to July's topic, though remember that as it's August that topic is being retired. I'll say being married agrees with me, although later this month we have to return to britain and go to the Aims music school, which means for the next cou
ple of weeks my lady and I have to get off our respective rear ends and actually learn some music and do some practicing, indeed my lady's parents have asked  us to sing at their church (she's not amazingly keen given her slightly rocky relationship with said church and the fact that said church is a bit extreme, but I sort of feel obliged given that the pasta did marry us gratis). On the plus side, yesterday I got pontes media downloader to behave, so have downloaded the accompanyment and indeed learnt the misty mountains song from the first hobbit film. While I don't like the fact that it blatantly ignores tolkien's actual words and includes some extremely questionable rhymes (gold with heart and soul), It is a rather awesome song, very much aimed at a tenor and something it's great to sing, though methinks said pasta would be less pleased if I did it at church since I don't think slaying of dragons is usually part of their ideas of christi
anity, Saint George withstanding .Things however have mostly been extremely peaceful and I continue to split my time equally between spending time with my lady and her family, reading, and playing manamon, albeit I still didn't get much done on the game generally. I'm reading Feist's magician which I'm still waiting to pick up. At the moment I confess the D rather standardness is getting a little irritating, that last chapter even featured descriptions of "Dwarfs with their strong constitutions" and magic weaponry with the "affect undead" state. I do recall from my wiz through the book years ago things picked up when the actual war between the two worlds got going, also it's very obviously and manifestly Feist's first novel. Still I'll save thoughts until I've read the book and for if I decide t
o do a review, which I might since I'm actually rather enjoying writing them at the moment, though since I'm only about a quarter of the way through that'll be a while, though I do also need to do some ork for audiogames.net since as per usual we have lots of games to add. @Cae, Mistborn is pretty  good, it's one of my lady's favourites, albeit that since I read it very quickly over course of a music school week my memories aren't too clear and I want to reread books 1-4 before going on to the newer ones.  I'm not one of these people who thinks "Sanderson is god!"  (though stormlight is shaping up to be a pretty good read), however mistborn was genuinely a really interesting fantasy with some nice twists and progression, and he does actually kill characters albeit not too often, indeed the central premise of who the evil overlord (no he is actually called the overlord), happens to be is quite a uniq

I am also pleased that unlike in some of his series he dishes out all the darkness on gender lines which is good, some of the bits of Warbreaker where the utterly evil bad guy who you'd just seen slaughter several people and wound the good guy, ties up the heroin and stuffs her in a cupboard without actually hurting her for no readily aparent reason were sort of begging belief a little . Mistborn however is one where Sanderson actually remembers to have bad things happen to ladies as well, or at least have ladies in equal amounts of danger to the guys (this was most extreme in Elantris, where the princess was so dam safe constantly I felt her sections of the book were a little poinltess). Mistborn does get a bit too super heroy in places for my liking, also I've noticed that sanderson's systems of magic problem often makes events feel a
little too much like using skills in an rpg rather than reading a book, though this probably will bother you less than it bothers me.I'd say next to stormlight mistborn is my second favourite Sanderson over all.
