Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Hi everybody and happy 2017! I realize I've not been here much as of late, but my schedule has gotten pretty full. A busy work life combined with chatty neighbors, plus some other stuff. But I'm still here, which is a good thing. So I think I'll mainly talk about my experience thus far on the Macintosh platform. As many of you know, I got my first Mac computer as a Christmas present in 2013 from my parents. It is a MacBook Air, and thus far I've been very happy with it. I don't consider myself much of a power user on here yet, but I have learned how to do a lot of things. I think Apple has done an excellent job with VoiceOver, and it's great that all these access features are built right into the operating system. I also have the latest build of Chromevox Classic on here, and really like it. I haven't yet checked out the beta version of Chromevox Next, but it sounds good. Actually I did for a few minutes, but I couldn't figure anything out.
Perhaps support for that beta on the Mac platform is still forthcoming.

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

LOL not much going on here in the Potato State or the Gem State as it's known by the locals, well except me working on the world-famous fantasy novel I've been writing on and off for the past four years. LOL. Well that and trying to record a video audition for the one "Reality" TV show I remotely like, The Voice. Unfortunately I lack the equipment to record the sort of quality video they would want and so the trouble has been finding someone who does possess it. For those who don't know, The Voice is basically a singing competition where the top price is a recording contract and I believe there's cash involved as well. But after being told many times at Karaoke that I should try out I've decided that at the very least it could be a fun experience.

It's very good so far very scary and fast-paced.I'm happy to say my dad is recovering from his heart surgery well. He's home and able to walk around and getting stronger. He's a lot better than the first time I saw him in the hospital which I'm glad he's come a long way.

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

@Garrett, methinks your problem was not swimming when the tide was coming in, but swimming too close to jelly fish . @Nial, Good luck with the English teaching. I know some people have done that, but like anything else it depends upon where you end up and how things work out, since Japan like anywhere else in the world has good or bad parts and indeed good or bad schools to work in, but if your going as far as wrenting rooms over there your probably aware of that. Mud wise, I'm loving alteraeon right now, and not really noticing the grinding because I'm totally focused upon doing quests, and also because I so much enjoy all the nifty little activities and things that druids and mages can do (my char is a druid mage), such as brewing salves and tinctures (some of which rock), experimenting with potions, making spellstaffs, maintaining liveoak minians etc.
I'm also having fun with the leather armour crafting skill, though haven't made anything particularly good yet, and I'll be interested to see what happens when cooking gets added into the game. If your looking for none grindy muds, three I can very much recommend are clok, frandom and avalon the legend lives. Frandom is essentially a giant interactive fiction game built as a mud, albeit without complex guess the verb parsers. You progress not by fighting, but by wandering around, examining things, exploring, talking to people and doing many questes. It's a very cool game and one I do want to get back to. Then there is Clok, which has some of the best crafting I've seen, very much the thing if you want to really feel like your part of another world doing wilderness ruvival, I've also heard good things about lament on this score but not played it yet. Lastly Avalon the legend lives is the thing if you want a truly hug
e and immersive game world with a lot of stuff to do. The only thing with avalon is most of what you do in terms of activities revolves around other players and organizations, still from what I gathered while I was there other players were pretty nice. all of these have db pages so feel free to check them out, also as I said I am enjoying alteraeon quite a lot at the moment myself, I'm Thelok on there if you want to give me a yell (I'm not a one for grouping but I'll e glad to gift you some xp or carve you some runes). @Guitarman, hope your dad is okay, my dad had a bypass last year after a heart attack. He's okay now, but it was definitely worrying, also thanks for the words about my lady's dog. Dulcimer and mandolin? that is cool! I love the sound of both, indeed I've sung with a lute player before myself which was definitely an experience. I'd agree with you about stormlight being like the best of WoT, though not too lo
udly since my lady ias a huge! WoT fan, I want to get her a replica ais sidai ring for our wedding aniversary. We even have arguements about what Aja she'd be, she fancies yellow for the healing but personality wise she's definitely a green, especially with how angry she gets about injustice, sometimes if she sees something upsetting about the news and gets justifyably irate I'll say "You are so a green!" and people think we're weerd . anyway digression aside, you'll like the stormlight story in arcanum unbound, actually it was my favourite one of the lot. Dark tower did have an odd ending, and I want to reread the series myself since I wasn't in a good place when reading the last three books. My lady has just finished reading cell which she liked, though she said was most distinctly a horror. Doosmday book is good,
I can recommend it, though check the link for the review over on fantasybookreview.co.uk for details. HopefullyWell it's nearly seven in the morning and I've had a rather sleepless night doing doctor who, so I'll probably go and see if I can get another quest or two done this morning before I crash, though i would finally! ike to sort out the amazon ecco today if I can, and now this post is getting way too long so methinks I'd better stop .

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Hi.Well it's been a good month so far. Although my dad just had open heart surgery and he's in a lot of pain so if you could keep him in your prayers. I visited him yesterday I've never seen him so sick. I knew this was coming but still it's awful. My grandfather went through the same thing but I was so little I barely remember.Anyway, on a happier note I got a mandolin for christmas. I'm learning how to play it, it's coming to me very easily. I seem to have a nack for stringed instruments. I can play guitar, traditional dulcimer, mandolin now, ukulele, and if I tuned one of my guitars way down probably bass. I've been wanting to start or get into a band. I'm a little shy around people at first so I don't know how that will work yet. I've been getting lessons for different instruments from bard. This guy bill brown does a lot of guitar stuff which is good it helps me learn new songs and new techniques. I go to lessons a
nyway but I use the recorded lessons to learn new things more than once a week.I've been reading a lot of good books mysteries and other things. Lately the dark tower series has been on my mind. I guess I should probably read it again. As much as I love it the ending still bothers me. You'd think that after all the time I spent reading it King could have brought a better ending than he did. I understand the ending a little better now that I'm older but I still don't like it. I like happily ever after better than doom and gloom at the end of a story.@Dark, that's cool you read arcanum unbound I'm waiting for bookshare to get it. I like the stormlight archive too. I hate to say this but in many ways stormlight is a better kind of wheel of time story. So far it's been a lot more fun to read. Words of radiance had such an odd ending I'm wondering where the third book is going to go. The assassin Szeth who was one of my least favorite c
haracters at first seems like he's not such a bad guy after all. Maybe in the third book he can be turned from the dark side of the force lol! I'm sorry to hear about your wife's guide dog. I've lost two dogs over the years so I can imagine how she feels. Even though my dogs were just regular non-guide dogs I know how that hurts. Anyway I'll have to check out this Connie Willis book sounds interesting.

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Sense we're talking about swimming, I feel like I should talk about something that happened 2 or 3 years ago. One time, we went to the beach to go swimming, and the tides happened to be coming in at that time. Well, the tide happened to bring in tuns of very unhappy jelly fish. I went out in the water to swim for a bit, and swam right into a jelly, and got the stinger stuck right in my foot. I had to drink tuns of water to keep my blood pressure down so I wouldn't have a heart attack from the poison, cause I already have bad cholesterol anyways from my unhealthy eating habits. So lesson learned. Don't go swimming at the beach when tides are coming in unless you have your whole body covered from the chest down with clothing. As for this year, we didn't get the chance to go swimming that much, which is kind of sad, cause we had amazing weather for it.

Hey Folks,Happy 2017! It really seems alter eon has undergone a lot of development lately. Perhaps I should give it another shot. I went on a mudding binge throughout my early teenaged years and since then have become very wary of anything with too much grinding or player politicking of the nastier sort. What would you all say is a mud with very little repetitive activity and a decent player base? I know where you're coming from CAE when you talk about motivation and the existential terror of stepping out into the world and looking for the right environment. At some point you've got to make the leap, and see where you land. I found a friend in Japan who has a spare room and is willing to rent out to me, so I'm taking a huge risk and going over there on a working holiday visa to look for English teaching work. Needless to say I'm very nervous. In the mean time I'm finishing up this English teaching certification and cramming as much Japane
se into my head as I can. I'm sad to hear about your lady's dog Dark. Those losses always leave a space in your heart that no other dog can fill.

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

@Dino, not a problem. I think if your forced to do something as a kid, especially if the instructor is unpleasant, you tend to get an avertion to it later, I was nearly put off music for life by a very horrible music teacher, which I luckily got over, but it did make things miserable. When I was a teenager I did do some scuba training (in a swimming pool), but that was actually pretty good fun and I learnt quite a lot of interesting things including practice life saving. I totally failed yesterday at sorting the amazon ecco, so perhaps I'll get it done today. I did however play lots of alteraeo, which is really awesome and I'm completely loving right now. It's also odd that we're discussing swimming, since at the moment I'm rereading hmls ulysses by alastaire Mcclein. It's obviously not a recent book (it was published in 1955), and I don't usually go for military type fiction but my lady reminded me of how good this one
was, it's actually one of her favourites despite the fact that she goes for the hole war thing far less than I do. It's because of the characters, and just seeing people survive in amazongly nasty conditions in the arctic sea, where it's literally so cold touching the ship's metal with bare hands will freeze a person's skin off. Bits of the book are rather dry, particularly when discussing ships workings in rather exhaustive detail, but other bits are great, which makes it an odd book to read. I also need to finish a book review today, so definitely things to do, though how much I'll get done of them we'll see .

@Dino Yes, genophobia is the fear of sexual relations, and that was indeed what i meant to say, --- I've mentioned it previously on this board and indeed that is why the database entries for things like Jim Kitchin's x rated games or fleixble survival were not written by me.Where this ties into swimming is that I was very uncomfortable being seen in public wearing only swimming trunks, so swimming in a public pool, or even an out door one was not possible. I'll spare the details, but lets just say thanks to mrs. Dark things have improved, which is why swimming in Pensylvania in summer was such a big deal for me.

@Dark and Slender, I looked up the meaning of genophobia and found that it is 'the physical or psychological fear of sexual relations or sexual intercourse'. Since I don't think that's what Dark meant, I have no idea what he meant to say...anyhoo, I've not been doing much lately. I've built the chest piece and a shin of an iron man suit in cardboard that I intend to make into a pattern, then remake in EVA foam and paint or apply vinyl appropriately. If it turns out well enough (and I sure hope it does) I will probably wear it to a feel the force day event. Though it's not going to be entirely movie accurate I'm having a good time putting it together and... one day it will be completed, though that day is pretty far off as of yet.I've also been working on my game which has been coming along nicely. @Dragomier,  I'm really sorry to hear about Brian, more especially now that I, and particularly Mrs. Dark have just had the sad business with her dog Neo. Actually, she had to phone guide dogs uk yesterday and let them know the particulars, so that she can get on the list for a new dog and start the ball rolling, and needless to say that was far from fun. @Slender, I was appauled to read after the election that Hillery clinton literally called Trump a good hearted king and praised him to the skies, doing everything but lick his boots, can you say two faced? While a bit of  grace in the face of defeat is one thing, and a "sorry I didn't win, good luck and hope things work out" type of remark would've been welcome, to do a complete turn around to becoming trumps biggest supporter is just insane! also I'm afraid it shows you just how ridiculous the hole system is. I will say this is one thing I like about politics in br
itain, at least since the prime ministers are leaders of the party and have been in politics for a while, it's far less based on personal charisma and someone getting themselves made head of state by simply throwing money around. As to trump and the warheads, I wouldn't worry too much, he'll only nuke countries that don't make him money . Getting back to more interesting things, we have swimming lessons in Britain two. I think in Britain everywhere is about eighty miles from the sea, and of course we have lots of lakes and rivers and lochs up in scotland and ireland, (which are lovely but very cold). The problem in britain is firstly that the weather is rarely good enough for outdoor swimming, and secondly the north sea is so dam dangerous to swim in, really between the currents and the cold some people are drowned each year. So we al
so have lots of public swimming baths, and swimming lessons at school. Indeed when I was doing my degree there used to be a pool I went to every week which was really nice, however it annoyingly got closed. Then I admit I've not swum for years due to my genophobia, (especially swimming out doors), which is why pensylvania and swimming with my lady this summer was so nice. It looks like we'll probably be going back to the states in September for a friends' wedding and to help clean up my lady's parent's house, so hopefully I'll get some more swimming in then, assuming it's not cooled down too much. Well I've been playing lots of Alteraeon, and loving it. Finally got through the blackwater hollows, which was an area that killed me several times as a clerric warrior but rocked as a druid, I'm really! getting into the game though I hope I don't over xp myself before I've finished the quests on arcase. Toda
y I have several things that need doing, including writing another book review, setting up my lady's computer so she can check her mails and such, and hopefully having a play with the amazon ecco we got from my brother at christmas, so lots going on.

In Michigan, though, learning to swim can be difficult, because pools are hard to find, mainly because the weather is often very cold. And pools in houses are very rare, and even if you found one, it would have to be indoors, not out.

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Learning to swim--and actually swimming--is much easier in Australia than other countries. 80% of Australians live within fifty kilometres (just over thirty miles) from the coast, and there are numerous public pools everywhere, and many houses and schools contain pools as well. Just about all children take swimming lessons. That being said though, many Australians probably need to learn a bit more about water safety; in New South Wales, the largest of Australia's states, seventeen people have drowned since Christmas Day.

@Dark, Good thing I hang out with a few British folks, because when I first heard that Trump is a term for fart a while back, I immediately made the joke that he would be doing that in Hillary Clinton's face . And it looks like that may have been true after his victory. What really confused me, though, is how the candidates, who had been busy bashing and bashing each other just a day earlier, magically begin to congratulate Trump on his victory right after he wins. I guess they finally, after trump won, realized they had to settle their differences and ease the transition for him. Or maybe that's politics at its finest. I still think if we put Clinton and Fart I mean trump in a cage, they would fight and fight until one of them died. And diving boards? [[wow]], I have been wanting to go on one for a very long time, the sensation has always been wonderful for me. And
since I have learned how to swim, even on my back which I had trouble with before, I won't have a major drowning accident like I did the last time I went on one. Those swimming courses definitely will help me later on oh no? The Russian's are attacking us! Dive under the table guys! Cover your head! Anyway, at last, I am home. The ride was extremely long, and even longer if you count the rest stops, but at last, I am back home. @Nocturnus, Keep grabbing those genitals! I support you, fully and wholeheartedly! Re: Monthly chat January 2017

It is sort of amusing that in britain "trump" is a rather childish word for a fart, which describes much of his relations. What really bothered me was the recent stunt in which the Japanese offered a formal appology for pearl harbour and trump's response was more along the lines of "so you should do", then again he seems to dislike any country that doesn't like neuclear weapons, scary, scary stuff, maybe I should go and dust off those old protect and survive tapes and practice a bit o dayly duck and cover . @Slender, My thesis is my doctoral thesis. I already have (and have had for a while now), a degree and a masters, I've been trying to get the phd for several years now, though that combined with various other circumstances hasn't made life fun for some considerable time, why this year is such a major change for me. awesome stuf
f in florida. I went when I was 14 to do the disney thing including wet and wild, though I think this summer in pensylvania was also the first time I did considerable out door pool stuff, including making a prat of myself on a diving board, which was a huge amount of fun and convinced my twelve year old niece that not all adults stop being kids (well hay why not). @Cae sympathy on the life issues. i confess things are a bit scary for me right now too, since following lots of shenanigans over marrying someone from another country and finishing my doctorate which is now finally finished,t he question of "what now" is quite a big one, and realizing I need a new house, a new vocation, and probably still need to maintain some distance from my parents is quite the set of realizations, so hopefully a year of changes for me. Then again, I know the things I'm good at, and will look around for opportunities involving those things, and getting the new pc is the sta
 rt of that.

Hmm.Good: I have a working braille display againNot-quite-so-good: ... via PACMate Omni.PCDocs likes installing crap on my computer which slows it down (... when I send it to them for hardware issues).I feel like I've gotten more game stuff done in the past week than in the past 7 months. Past 2 years if you ignore Redsword. ... Which I just wrote a quick-and-dirty walkthrough for and fixed a couple frustrating bugs. I guess I should upload those and pretend people can understand it, then get back to work on better things.I need a future. I doubt $100k/year would be enough to convince me to apply for any of the jobs people frustratedly insist I should. I like Aprone's menial-labor-for-cash-save-brains-for-what-actually-cares-about strategy. I guess that is the strategy of other people, if what they care about money or prestige or living up to some nebulous expectations or whathaveyou. Forbs told me that if someone hates their job, they shoul
d start sending out resumes, which is absolutely forgetting hilarious.(And when I tell people I like Aprone's strategy, they seem disgusted. Consistently. Every single one. Including the one who adamantly tells me I should not care what other people think I should do. ... Except Aprone, since I did talk to him about it once or twice.)I finally watched the Polar Express. Why under the light did I not do this 12 years ago? I think I should do this every December from now on.LCB has convinced me that my only real problem is not wanting to put up with awkward interactions with the public/family. Also "motivation", but you knew that.So I'm in this weird bind where clearly the healthiest decision is to get far away from home, but that is the opposite of what I want to do. Lovely.Hm. Now I remember why I've been not posting in these so much lately. I'm bad at the "chat" part. These are not supposed to be "wh
at I did last month" journal entries. Also I haven't had much to say other than the Horseshoe Ranch in Jasper, Arkansas ruined most of October and November by being too much of a boost for anything less to keep me awake. I did not expect this from a place with "ranch" in the name. Also, Ziplining is way less fun than I thought it would be, horseback riding managed to undershoot my already low expectations, and if I ever have money to throw away I'll probably build a playground or Speleobox or something wherever I can find enough contiguous usable space but like that will ever happen right? So, happy new year?

@dark, If you want to see Trump's insanity, just look at his Twitter feed. The way he tweets generally makes me wonder what he's thinking. Also, In Florida, private pools aren't hard to find, because it's usually very warm all year round. Actually, the pool I was in was less of a private pool and more of a neighborhood pool, because it's technically used by the entire neighborhood, however people rarely swim in it, so I basically had the pool to myself. The swimming lessons I took earlier in the year definitely helped as well. Oh, and, jumping in a pool never gets old. I always found it to be a wonderful experience. And actually, jumping in helped me get use to the cold water very quickly. I also managed to do something I haven't done in many,, many years. I got to swim in a salt water ocean. Yes, an actual, salt water ocean. to be fair, the fun did ware off after a while, because when you swallow salt water or get it in your eyes, it burns. Very badl

@Slender, as I've said before, it's not technology that worries me, it's how it is used, particularly with how much of the world now is owned by a very few coorporations and how people are so subscribed, Huxley hear we come. Trump is actively scary and Mrs. Dark really dispares of the situation, even her dad who has apparently always voted Republican (I think more because it's the side he supports), is getting rather wary  about Trump. I've already read some very hilarious trumpisms, which are now replacing bushisms. My favourite was "I've never seen a thin person drinking diet coke", and "There is so much snow in New york, We need global warming!"what is more scary are some of the things he's apparently saying to so many other countries these days, really quite bizarre stuff. Wel as regards 2014, partly it was my thesis being rejected, (I've just resubmitted it), partly lots of other
stuff that had been going on. Suffice it to say 16 was better, oh and very jealous of that pool! I did lots of out door swimming in pensylvania over summer, and since we don't really have private pools as much in England (both because of lack of space and clemment weather), that was a good thing indeed!@Slj, good luk with things, especially games and such. Next year is likely to be a fun one gaming wise for me too, especialy with the unexpected amazon ecco (I look orward to giving starlanes a try). Lots of family stuff going on here of course, indeed it's the first time my wife and I and my brother and his partner (and not his legal partner), have been together, had a great time last night playing dominoes of all things. Also, my review for doomsday book is now up, read it here, definitely one of the best books I've read for a considerable while, and especially
recommended if you like the blackdeath, albeit it wasn't exactly heavy on action, more about the characters and their disasters. I'll definitely check out more connie willis in the future, and I'm glad the site owner of fantasybookreview.co.uk got the thing posted for this month.

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Hi.2016 was an awesome year for me with so many great things happening in my life. A few very sad things happened as well, but I'll mostly think about the good things instead...I'm looking forward to 2017 as well, and I'm sure this will be an awesome and great year.I'm thinking about what to do this year, and try to set up some goals. I've planned to do a lot regarding to gaming this year, so I look forward to see how that goes. I plan to offer a lot of things for gaming to the blind community, and I'll do a lot for gaming in my own country, where gaming is close to no go if you don't speak english. Then, I'm working on a lot of projects together with other people, so there are a lot of things to look forward to. That is, if things goes as planned.

Pretty interesting 2016 for you, Dark. Though this I mean last year was a pretty tumultuous year in the US, with Donald trump getting elected and all. Considering his views on a lot of things, at this point, what he'll try to get passed is a big question mark. And I believe we also voted for a republican controlled senate and house of representatives, so what happened in this election will affect us for years to come. It's a good thing this election is the last one I can't vote in . But we can still move forward, it just takes lots of time. Progress always finds a way, no matter how hard people try to slow it down, to paraphrase a post on Techdirt. In other news, it looks like this post will be one of my last ones from Florida, as I am returning to Michigan today. We're going by car too, so I'll be back home tomorrow. A two hour long swim in a pool was
a nice way to end my vacation I guess. And, if you don't mind me asking, what made 2014 a bad year for you?

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Happy new year again everyone, since I now presume it'll be 2017 wherever you are in the world. @Slender, interesting you say rip 2016. 2014 was the really bad one for me, since then I've been working myself out of the hole. 2016 has probably been the most surprising year of my life thus far, and one I'll always remember for obvious reasons, quite major changes in my life. I confess we're now wondering what is going to happen in 2017 and being a little scared since we're not sure where we're going next. Something very sad did happen recently, indeed on boxing day. My lady's dog Nio has been ill for several weeks with what we thought was kennle cough. It became very obvious that it was something more serious, and boxing day it turned out to be lymphatic cansa, and Neo isn't with us anymore.Nio was an absolutely lovely black labrador who was very gentle and loved everyone, and needless to say both Myself, and especial
ly my lady have been absolutely shocked about this. I won't say it spoiled christmas, the first with my lady and my parents, but it wasn't good. Other than that I've been playing lots of Alteraeon, went to see a great concert version of raymund brigs the snowman, (though the soloist was no aled jones), and have just finished the very awesome doomsday book by Connie willis, and written a review. Before that, I read Brandon Sanderson's Arcanum unbound collection, a collection of his short fiction which ties things into the cosmier universe and explains some of the backstory. The stormlight story especially here rocked, but then again stormlight is sandersons best. I was a little disapointed with the mistborn story, secret history and one of the stories in a new location, but then again with all of what was going on with Neo it's not surprising.

Well well, just looking forward to 2017. Hopefully it's not filled with as many disappointments as 2016. As I said on Twitter, "Goodbye 2016. 'May you never rest in piece.'" Oh and by the way, as I write this, it's still 2016. So you are a year ahead of me! Aren't you proud?

Monthly chat January 2017

Well another year, another monthly chat topic. As usual share anything that's going on in your life and just have general chinwagging, in particular any resolutions or thoughts on the next year are welcome.Happy new year to everyone, again as I said in my news post. I'll confess I'm feeling a little dead right now it being close to one Am over here, so I'll just stick this topic up to grab anyone's thoughts, and return later to say hi and join in the hopeful host of tales of crimbo indulgence and resolutions people plan to keep, or not .
