How is TalkBack's Braille Keyboard? I've seen a small demo and it seemed ok, but I've heard some things saying it's not the greatest. What do those of you who have used it regularly think of it?

Not sure on the bnt, but on the apex, capslock is enabled by pressing the capital key twice, it should be the same on the touch. For instance, the caps key when using english braille, is dot 6, when in spanish, capital sign is done with dots 4  6. Capslock should enable if you press twice the combination of keys or key that allows you to write a capital letter.

If you want a note-taker that has the world-leading translation program of Braille to help its language codes succeed, along with the functions of a braille display, and mathematical capabilities to boot, then your answer is yes. Look at all the facts, and think about what you want, and determine if you want it or not. Don’t just get it because of what I said, as I will undoubtedly have a biased opinion in support of it, but you may not, depending on what you determine as beneficial for you. Make your own decision based on what you find.

It is exactly the same case, but the Braille display is just smaller. All other products which have smaller Braille displays are put into smaller cases.Regarding Keysoft:If you wanna run Android apps which are self voiced or which for some other reasons require you to turn off the accessibility screenreader:You can easily turn off Keysoft. No problem. But when you do that, you are thrown to the Android home screen. Hi.It's quite interesting that people are having different experiences on using the Braille Note Touch Plus.Would someone give me the exact instructions on how to launch A Blind Legend and make it work on the device?Maybe the machine I'm having access to at the moment is having some hardware issues, but the Bluetooth connection, both with an iPhone and a Mac computer is extremely unstable. Especially when trying to switch between the devices. You can't power off the unit and just reconnect, or close the terminal app. If you do that, you have to pair the devices again. The pairing process is extremely difficult. Then, don't make me start on the issues in Keyword.

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

Hi.I'm sorry to be late on my reply.Regarding what I wrote in post 7: Yes, I am talking about the Braille Note Touch Plus. It's running exactly like I described. It is currently on my desk next to me.Regarding the Braille Note Touch 18: This is exactly the same size of the BLT 32. That means, if you, for example, launch A Blind Legend and turn off Keysoft, then the app is closed and you need sighted help to launch the game again.I'm not sure if it's possible to run Talkback on the BLT.

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

Not just the Braille Note, but just about every bit of assistive technology costs too much. You asked would it be worth the Touch? Buying it, no. Having a blind services agency get it, yes. The device offers several benefits. Especially if you're a student.1. In an educational setting, a phone isn't always the best option.2. Both the Polaris and the Touch have built in math editing abilities. Although at my school for the blind I didn't need this, I will need it whenever my college starts offering classes in person and I'm taking Math. And if I had to pick, Touch Plus all the way. As @49 said, the software is more up to date compared to the Polaris. The Touch Plus is running Android 8.1 and I think the Polaris is on 5.something. Don't quote me on that though. Not only that, the Touch Plus has a better processor, and the build quality of the device is much better than that of the Polaris

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

For those who say the braillenote touch plus is priced to high, I think that you are partly right. Let me explain. You can get an android for under $1000, and a the 14 cell display from humanware is around $1000. Asuming that android supports braille, you can get an android device with braille for under $2000. I do not know how well android supports braille. Now as I am looking at pricing, I see that you can get a 40 cell display for around $3000. Add that to your under $1000 android device, and you will find that the total price is $4000 or under. Based on that info, what you have to deside is rather or not the ruffly extra $2000 for the braillenote plus is worth it. What you have to take in to account is the support that you may be getting from a place who is known for selling blindness related products, along with the fact that the braillenote touch is design (as far as I know) as a all in one device (as in a tablit with atatched braille display). Not to sure how much that is worth it to you. I have not included the orbit displays which would also affect pricing if you go with the build your own rout. Of course, there is the IPhone rout which I will not go into right now. Now, if I had to choose between the braillenote touch plus or braillesense, I would choose the braillenote touch plus over the braillesense because the OS is more up to date which means a better device because of some of the weakness in the older OSs. Of course, that is kind of the problem when you put a main stream os on a blindness product (as in the device is almost always out of date for longer). Now a all in one device with blindness design software can be useful at times. Of course, the braillesense u2 is running custem software on top of windows CE. As far as I know, you really can not run any apps on the braillesense u2 where you can on the braillenote touch plus. Matter of fact, I thought I saw something about humanware adding google signin to keymail which is something you will not see on the braillesense u2.

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

@47: great question. I got curious at one point too because I thought "hey, there must be cheaper options out there." My agency had just dropped me because I'd graduated from university so I needed to start footing the bill for any type of AT I needed. That's when I came to know of 14 cell Braille displays like SmartBeetle that are just over $1,200. And you can get an iPhone that's a generation or two behind that will cost you much less than the high price Apple puts on their products--or you can go the Android route and get a device much cheaper.Alternatively, you can go for the $500 Braille displays like the one made by APH, though when I got my SmartBeetle, APH's display didn't exist yet.Ultimately, I feel that getting a Braille display with a mainstream product is the much better route to take nowadays since technology is moving so fast. For example, when the BrailleSense U2 came out, the company was bragging about the processor speed and the capabilities of the device... when the mainstream market had left Windows CE behind at least five years before the U2 was developed.

Munawar, I have an honest question for you. Where on earth is a good braille display that wouldn't rack up the price of a flagship android plus itself up to at least 4000 dollars? I wonder now, as when I checked, braille displays are quite pricy as well And in regards to the support thing, no device can be supported forever. Humanware supports their devices for a long time, I mean hell, look at the victor reader second generation vs the victor reader treck. And when I updated from an apex to a touch, and a touch plus after that, humanware has offered upgrade programs to make updating cheaper, and there are funding centers that can help you pay for that. Assistive technology is certainly pricy, I have to agree with that point. I mean just look at JAWS. But the companies aren't just upgrading and going, too bad, pay 6000 again either.

All this talk about flashy new hardware and the latest tech got me interested, especially since people on here were saying they were going to buy the product. So I looked it up, in the hopes of seeing that assistive tech has finally dropped in price.BrailleNote Touch 18 Plus – Braille note taker/tablet BrailleNote Touch 18 Plus – Braille note taker/tablet$4,195.00 BrailleNote Touch Plus – Braille note taker/tablet BrailleNote Touch 32 Plus – Braille note taker/tablet$5,695.00 Personally, I don't think these price tags are justified for a device that might not even see long-term support. You can get a Braille display and Android device separately for about a third of the price. Just pair them, and you have pretty much everything this shiny new device offers.

Definitely, other languages have improved, and NVDA does show italics... although that seems to be all i shows nowadays, unfortunately. And yes, I love braille formatting so much that I put EPUB files, fanfic and all that, through BrailleBlaster to turn them into braille. Of course, I then miss the table of contents, links, all that navigation, but my gosh seeing proper italics and headings and paragraphs is so worth it, so satisfying, so delightful that I don't even care.

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

@Devinprater, you do bring up an interesting point. Why don’t we have proper braille formatting indicators in print documents? That should be the case, and it is definitely worth an aggressive push to get that to return. However, I still do receive italics indications when I connect it as a braille display. In BRF files, I still can tell paragraphical indentation, and centered headings, as was done before. I feel there have been some improvements in how some text is displayed in note-takers, especially where STEM is concerned and other languages are concerned. Perhaps the meaning of a braille display, and note-taker has changed over the years. Perhaps there are some ways in which there have been some improvement, and some ways where regression has occurred. At the end of the day, I still can appreciate literacy as a braille reader, and still can tell the difference between a paragraphical indentation, and a heading inentation. Embossers can still emboss raw braille formatted text if one wishes. I hope you understand where I am coming from, and I understand that I am speaking without the experiences with the old note-taker technology, as you knew it. That's my two cents here.

The *only* thing the old notetakers have for them is formatting. Yeah you all can fall asleep now, I get it.So, with the old Braille Note MPower and Apex, if you opened a document in the word processor, or a book in the book reader, it actually showed it in formatted braille! Headings were at the center of the display, no stupid formatting symbols which just makes braille feelable speech from a screen reader. Italics, bold, underline, it all was shown in braille formatting depending on what braille code is being used. I mean, it was amazing!Of course, now we have great Android with its pitiful accessibility API's, and a lazy Humanware who can't even add auto-scrolling to the braille notes now because ... well some European markets didn't like it and what? What's this "boolean" "toggle" thing you speak of? We've never heard of that! So yeah, it seems like Humanware have just gone down the tubes, or been Splintered by Odium, or something really bad because they just look extremely lazy now. Italics? No matter what braille code you use, it's always just $i. Heading? Just $h1 or something. It's turned braille into a drab, lifeless experience. And they could have freaking just storming handed it all off to Liblouis as XML or HTML, or Duxberry because Dux has to have some way of reading this crap to turn it into formatted braille! Rust and Ruin they could have! But no! Now braille is little more than, as I've said before, just a written representation of what the speech says. No life, no formatting, no spacial feeling of actual freaking text! We don't even get paragraph indentation anymore! Then again, we don't get that in Braille Extender addon for NVDA anymore for some reason, so maybe there's something going on there, but still! We had this in the MPower! 2001 era tech! And they took it away in 2019 era tech. I mean, it's crazy. You'd think braille tech would get *better*, not worse!

Firstly, the touch doesn't run off of an SD card anymore. Secondly, no, you could not undo the root, especially if it bricked the device, which yes, I've done. Third, the legality of jailbreaking and rooting:Rooting a device involves removing the restrictions placed by the cellular carrier or device OEMs. Many Android phone makers legally allow you to root your phone, e.g., Google Nexus. @25 yes, but I would not risk it. That's a 6000 dollar device and rooting breaks the support, no matter if you bought it. So yeah, don't do that. 27, What exactly do you mean? Touching braille doesn't activate it... What touch braille is is placing your hands on a touchscreen and typing like it's a braille keyboard.

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

what? are you serious about multytouch talkback? I can't even think how could that be achieved, due to how android accessibility is implemented, a second citizon only, not completely integrated. And what happens when you need to go to the other pages of the home screen and need two fingers? what would you do then?and btw, touch with braille? interesting, how the hell could you read the braille without touching it and therefore activating it?you know what would be pretty interesting, running keysoft on an actual android 8 device and see how it crashes...I now ask my self, is this possible?

@Chris, in some ways KeySoft is almost identical to TalkBack. For example, most if not all sounds are the same, and the gestures you can use with Touch Braille disabled are pretty much the same. You can access the context menues. And as for the home screen, you have two home screens. The KeySoft main menu, also the My Menu if you decide to customize it, and All Applications which is your standard All Apps screen you'd see on any other Android device

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

Keysoft is the accessibility service on the BrailleNote models powered by Android. I suspect it's a forked version of TalkBack. I also suspect they've written their own home screen and other applications.Keysoft on the Windows CE BrailleNotes is a layer over Windows CE. Again, I'm pretty sure all the standard applications are either customly written, or use the Keysoft screen reader and interface to interact with Windows CE applications. If you must have one of these devices, get the BrailleNote Touch Plus. It's the most current device in terms of both hardware and software. Hopefully it will be getting an update to Android 9, 10, or 11 at some point.

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

@7, Are you talking about the Plus or the original Touch?Don't forget that there were two touch models. The original one that came out in like 2016 or so, and the Braille Note Touch Plus which came out in 2019.If you were using the original Touch, I wouldn't be surprised if you had these problems. At my school though, I had a Touch Plus for my last year there, and it was far better than the original Touch. For one thing, it turned on way faster. For another, the software it is running is newer. It's not Android 10, but as people have said it's Android 8.1. I know it's not the latest, but as some people have said, it still receives security updates, and some phones still get it.As people also have said, the original Touch was on Android 4.something, and I think the Polaris is on 5.something Lollypop. So if you're comparing the Polaris to the Touch Plus, the Touch Plus is better.Oh yeah and did I mention that the amount of apps you can run on the Touch is greater than the amount you can run on the Polaris? The touchscreen gives you the ability to do a lot more

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

Hi.I completely disagree regarding the Braille Note Touch, and you can't compare it with the U2, because it's out dated. Compare it with the Polaris instead.1. The Braille NOte Touch have a lot of Bluetooth issues. The Braille terminal keeps dropping the connection, and it won't reconnect again automatically. Then you have to pair the bluetooth device again.2. Pairing Bluetooth devices is just too difficult, and my experience is that it works 2 out of 10 times. If you aren't quick enough to click on the notification, then you're screwed.3. When navigating texts in the text editor, the cursor doesn't seem to follow the focus. I haven't found any explanation on this in the usersguide.4. The Braille Note Touch does not make a blank display by default when making a new line in the text editor. There is a workaround, but the userguide does not explain that very well in my opinion, if that's even explained at all.So. I cannot recommend the Braille Note Touch at all, but that's just my opinion.

Basically, BN T runs outdated Android, but BS U2 runs even more outdated discontinued Windows. Well actually, I don't think it's completely fair calling Orio outdated, as the previous post states that it still receives updates from time to time. So, the BN T running Android, it just becomes an Android tablet basically, but with Braille? I mean, that alone would make me go with the BN T (as slow as it is)! At least it's not proprietary technology like the BS U2.That being said, I dare say these aren't the best devices to be compares, as Hims came out with a direct competitor to the BN T (the Polaris). Though I'm not sure what Hims did about the BN T+

Re: braillenote touch and braillesense u2, which one is better?

Hello.I have had personal experience with both the BrailleNote Touch+, and the BrailleSense U2. I would recommend the BrailleNote Touch+ over the BrailleSense U2, for a few reasons:1. The BrailleSense U2 runs on an outdated version of Windows CE 6.0, an operating system for mobile pocket PCs in the 1990s, while the BrailleNote Touch+ runs on Android 8.1.0, a version of Android which is still supported by the parent company, Google to this day, and still gets security updates from time to time. 2. It is much more reliable when dealing with foreign languages than the BrailleSense. I am from the United States, and can only speak for my experience in using the U2 to input Spanish text. I can tell you now that it could not do certain symbols. Also, the BrailleSense only has six supported braille codes: U.S. English Braille, Unified English Braille, Spanish, French, German, and Italian. The BrailleNote Touch+ has support for over 100 languages of text alone, and if that isn’t enough, it has a unicode app that can copy any character of unicode into any application. 3. Stability with high-level Mathematics and Science: The BrailleSense has been known to crash unexpectedly when inputting high-level algebraic expressions using its built-in function known as "Nemeth Mode." Iif some combinations of symbols are put together, it will make a word document inoperable by both the BrailleSense user, and any sighted individual who may look at the work you may do, such as a teacher or co-worker. With the BrailleNote Touch+, there may have been a symbol or two that just couldn't be put into the document for some reason, but never has a document crashed, or looked strange when doing high-level Scientific Equations. 5. Seamless integration with Google: The BrailleNote Touch+ runs on the Android platform, and as such has access to Google Drive, which the BrailleSense U2 does not have access at all. This allows smooth transport of files from the Touch to the computer, where advanced functions, such as the hanging indent in Microsoft Word can be performed, with the BrailleNote Touch+ acting as a braille display. I am using my Touch+, in fact to type this extremely long message, which makes typing efficient, and less tiring me, as I am an individual with Cerebral Palsy. Sorry for the long message, but I hope I have provided a sufficient argument as to why the BrailleNote Touch+ is better to use overall.
