Games are kind of the software development gateway drug. My first program was a quiz about cats. Sure, today I write GPS navigation software and game engine accessibility code and all sorts of things, but I wouldn't have had the know-how or attention span to manage *any* of that at 13 or 14 or even 17.Also, in terms of learning lessons, no offense, but forum.audiogames.net is pretty low on my lesson-learning totem pole. There are lots of places where game developers post demo projects, and no one gets their nickers in a knot about it. Maybe spinning it as some big release wasn't such a cool thing to do, but then again, maybe so was taking it seriously. Hell, I have a pretty active life outside this forum and even *I* wondered when this one would evaporate. I think there are some loud voices here who take lots of things way more seriously than they should, so I'd caution anyone to take anyone's advice here with a large grain of salt and a healthy dose of common sense.If there's a lesson to be learned here, maybe it's that this community should either not get overly excited about every shiny someone puts in front of it, or that it should be ready to let go of flashes in the pan that don't work out. Also, you guys don't know how the dude's home situation is. You don't knoww if his parents pester him for good grades. For example, here's my situation.I study 11 subjects. I got 9 A's, a B in maths, but I was like 5 marks shy of an A, and I got a C in Art, but I've explained numerous times to my parents, the Art teacher doesn't teach. But they still pester me for the 2 subjects I fell short in. You also don't know if Rory's famly bugs him about spending so much time on the computer playing.Look, the dude has a life, and people who are apart of his life, and you guys don't know how those people are interacting with his life. Secondly, this isn't a paid game. If it was paid, I could expect the reaction most of you gave, but its not paid, and probably won't be paid, so the comparisons between RB and Rock Star and the other big companies are fucking bull shit, and I suggest you really pioritise your lives. Another thing, while space mission is cool for the community, its not Last of us 2 or GTA 6, so you guys flop there again.Nextly, I see someone acting like developing audio games is the most importnt thing in the universe, and that they alwways set aside time to programme, however again you don't know the guy's situation, what you may do doesn't mean Rory has the same situation as you. Do like Aaron Baker and keep things close to your chest until you're ready to let 'em roll. That's what I'm doing. For those of you that don't remember, I'm training, at the graduate level I might add, to become a paralegal. If I weren't, I would have downloaded the Sable alpha when it dropped last month and worked on an idea I've got which would be a first in its own way. That said, because my degree program is roughly two years in length from January of 2020 to late 2021, don't expect anything for awhile. No details, no trailers, nothing. Know that I do have some ideas and hopefully they'll pan out, but they're pretty involved so I can't say what'll happen. Rory, just concentrate on school for now and keep your projects pretty much secret until you're ready to give them to us. Hang in there...this stuff isn't easy. Trust me...years of frustration with BGT have taught me an object lesson about that. Comparing this to Naughty Dog is a bit disingenuous, to put it mildly. There's a *huge* world of difference between a game with a massive budget and development team, vs. something made by one dude who's also trying to grow up and become an adult. And no, releasing Space Mission is not some monumental step on his way to adulthood, at least no more monumental than many others he's probably facing right now. 2. If you haven't paid for a product, you aren't owed anything. 3. Running a game studio is very fucking hard. Hell, I even made a go of it 12-13 years ago in my mid 20s and dropped the ball, and I'm glad I did, because at the time I didn'tknow the first thing about taxes beyond the 1040EZ, how to handle royalties, etc. So if I'd tried selling a game because a bunch of people shamed me into it, I'd just have gotten screwed over by the IRS a year or two or seven down the road.Now the flipside of this is that I don't get excited or invest much emotional energy into these releases. Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you're touching a burner and repeatedly getting burned, the problem isn't the burner. It's the idiot who keeps touching it and expecting different results.In short, lay off of Rory. It's not cool, sure, but the dude's young, and at a point in his life where he really needs to prioritize school over making some internet randos happy. Also, just don't get excited about future work he does until it's being released and actively improved. Then you'll live in the best possible scenario regarding his work.I feel like we had almost this exact conversation a few months ago. why space mission will not be dropping on the 15th hi all,I'm going to start this off by saying that I probably will not be releasing any games for the next year or so, and that will most likely include space mission.The reason for my decision is quite simple: school.Now, throw what you will at me about abandonment, but I honestly need to direct all my attention toward school and real life stuff at this point.I want to practice coding in private until I can reliably make very complex things and the frequency of me putting stuff down becomes very rare.For similar reasons, I will probably be retiring from my youtube channel as well.I'm really sorry for all the people looking forward to space mission and the sound designers who helped with space mission and all the people that helped me code it. It's not right to abandon it; it's not right to abandon anything, but I feel like I need to get on the right track with school and doing that is going to take all my energy and effort away from me.This is part of the reason for all my past projects getting discontinued - I'd have this little couple of weeks like a holiday or some period of time where I was so overwhelmed I just couldn't do anything other than sit down at the chair, open up my lap top and code; it would come to an end a few weeks later for one reason or another, and I'd go back to school, not be able to code much, and the holidays would come round and I would've practically forgotten why I even started the project.I also have taken to being extremely competitive with my coding; releasing simple things for a bit of praise to get me a little happier and then, of course, it would end up that some to most people wouldn't like it and it would all go down hill again. Perfect example -- the play center.I grew to code for only the user karma to go up and would seithe every time someone else got complimented about their projects, thinking it was unjust and being extremely narcistic.I've done so much wrong that I just can no longer trust myself anymore and with school coming back into play it's just going to get more and more difficult.I stress that this is not just another one of my empty words topics about leaving and about how the form was ungrateful and bla bla bla.I don't really want to seek attention by making this, I just want to let people know what's going on.Thanks for your understanding - rb studios, signing out.
