Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

@tayo.bethel, the tutorial isn't very interactive, mostly you just walk through and if people talk to you they talk. The inventory thing confused me as well, just put on all the gear, then go up the corridor, find the key in the lock box and continue to proceed, and just ignore the guy with the keys since he doesn't say anything.@Erick, This is why Alteraeon is a fantastic audiogame, but a very bad introduction to muds. The alteraeon client is a labour of love built over more than a decade and turns Alteraeon into an audiogame, muds however are text based by nature, so if you want to play other muds, you should get used to playing without sounds. For me, sounds in a mud are  like a dessert course after a meal, a great thing to have and something you really enjoy while they're there, but not something absolutely essential, and I'd no more deny myself a mud because of lack of sounds than I'd deny myself dinner if I couldn't have a dessert afterwards .

Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

Okay I'm giving this one a try. On the one hand I like the writing and the descriptions, and the idea of a game with D mechanics is interesting, especially in terms of the feat system and some mechanics such as combat maneuvers. ON the other hand the game has a few errors already. The tutorial seems somewhat difficult, for example some npcs don't speak, others don't respond to key words, and the crafting tutorial was straight off broken. I also don't particularly like the "ask so and so something" mechanic unless you get clear instructions, but we will see, since the game seems to have two completely different quests and right now I'm at the quest master just doing tutorial jobs so there is obviously more to experience.

Nope, Luminary doesn't have a db entry yet, actually I always meant to try the game out because of the aforementioned quest system but never got around to it, this gives me a good excuse, though I do remember when I had a poke around the website that the game seemed rather complex in terms of character creation etc.

Hi,after starting on Frandum, I also started on this game again. The first time the whole system with feats, trains and boosts threw me off a bit because it seemed kind of complicated, but I'm willing to try again and just build my character like I want for now.But I'm kind of stuck now regarding the quests. I arrived in the village after the tutorial and did the first quest the elder gave me, but I can't seem to do the second one where he asks me to find some missing adventurer. Sorry I forgot the name, I hope someone here remembers what I'm talking about. The elder just says the adventurer traveled east, but I don't really know where to go. I explored quite a bit to the east of the village but found nothing. So, any hints where this adventurer might be? I'd really like to progress a bit further and see where the game goes from there.ThanksTikki

Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

Hi everyone, and thank you so much for checking out our game!  I am Ornir, and I am the lead developer for Luminari.  I will try to address some of the questions raised in this thread, and you are all welcome to ask anything else you might be curious about and I will try to answer!ry.CurreWith regards to grind - It is my opinion that there is FAR less grind on Luminari than on some other muds, especially at lower levels.  As you get higher levels you will of course need to grind out some experience but there are plenty of areas where you can play.As far as areas go, we have provided each player with a teleporter object that lets them access many (but not all!) of the zones in the game.  In the game, please look at 'HELP TELEPORTER', 'HELP ZONES', 'HELP ZONES2' and 'HELP ZONES3'.  These help files provide the keywords that you use via the 'TELEPORT ' command.  I wo
n't reproduce them here because they are very long. The campaign quest provides a fun way to follow a story arc in the game while gaining experience and gear.  Currently, the campaign quest will take you to about level 14, depending on your class and your skill.  We are developing further quests to extend this all the way to level 30.With regard to stats - You gain boosts as you level up which allow you to increase an ability score (strength, dexterity, intelligence, etc) permanently.  Gear also provides bonuses to ability scores, although these bonuses will not open up new features that are restricted by your stats.Luminari tries to be true to the Dungeons and Dragons / Pathfinder RPG games as much as it makes sense in the context of a MUD.  This means that the potential for character development is very large and you have many opportunities to increase your character's ability, power, skills, etc. throughout your time on Luminari.&
nbsp;  Feats are the main way that this is accomplished and are the primary way to improve your character and make it unique.Even if you are not sure how to build a character, we provide a RESPEC command that allows you to go back to level 1 as whatever class you choose, although you must meet the requirements, while retaining all of your XP.  That way you can simply gain, train and boost your way back up to your previous level and try a new class build as many times as you wish.  This may be more limited in the future but for now is completely open.  Do you want to make a Gnomish Berserker who focuses on two-handed weapons?  Go ahead!  Tomorrow you can respec and make that Wizard you were itching to try, without having to level up another character. The only thing you can not change is a character's race.Luminari also has the concept of Account EXP, which is granted when you gain large chunks of XP, from a boss mob for example.
Account EXP allows you to unlock new races and prestige classes that allow further customization of your character.  Throughout the lifetime of one level 30 character you should have enough Account EXP to unlock a prestige class without additional grinding.  Advanced and epic races, however, may require a bit of work on your part.  Account exp is tied to your account, not a single character.  Account exp is also used as a manual reward for events and excellent roleplay, if that is your thing. We are working hard to improve accessibility of Luminari for the VI community, so please let me or another immortal know if you need any features that we currently lack.  Many of these features may exist, for example someone requested a way to check mobile health during combat without looking at the mobile.  For that there is the 'DIAGNOSE' command, but its use may not have been clear enough.Thank you again for checking out our game an
d I hope to see you online!- Ornir Elunari

@Cooltirk, agreed, I'm an exploring sort of person myself too and that's how I tended to play alter, but I did  find I got to a point where higher level areas were too tough, while lower ones I had played out, still I don't mind grinding if it can be a variable  enough experience and so long as you actually gain something  practical without having to go on for too long making no progress at all.In fighting fantasy books the stats weren't too bad, sinse it wasn't hard to reroll a few times even on ffproject, and at least you'll finish the books within an hour or two (supposing you don't die horribly along the way), but it always irritated me in a mud or an online game where woopse, you discover after playing for 10 or 20 hours and getting to higher level that your starting stats weren't up to scratch, that's why i much prefer being able to progress over time, which again comes back to grinding sinse if I can see I

@Dark you make a good point. The fighting fantasy games are based on that system so the stamina you start with is what you end up with.If that's the case with this game then I think I'll pass.I don't mind the grinding, as long as it doesn't take me days to level up.I could never play for hours at a time, certainly not if it's going to get boring doing the grinding.I tend to explore, if I happen to get into a fight with some beast or monster, that's great. That pretty much is what I use to do on AlterAeon, but I'd end up fighting, only to receive a measly amount of XP or gold, even if the fights took a while.

You can increase your stats, although it's something like once every five levels? It really is pretty faithful to DND rules. The mud looks relatively young so there don't seem to be hundreds of areas yet, but if it lives up to it's potential, it will be an awesome place to be.

Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

One question I have about stats is are the stats fixed once they're rolled? I always love games where you can progress and have the possibility to improve your character, but saying "oh dear the gods of random generation didn't smile on you, so your character is always a wimp"   is never something I like in games too much sinse it feels too much like "oh dear you can't progress now because you didn't roll well at the start" As to grinding well any game with battle has a little grinding just because you can't really have quests all the time, it's just a matter of giving you interesting areas to hunt in and   foes to fight, and having the grinding set up in minimal enough amounts to keep you thinking your getting somewhere, rather than you needing to kill 200 rats in the sewers to progress from level one to level 2 where upon you get one new spell which isn't that useful, and then having to kill 200 sn
akes in the forest, the same goes at higher levels. Generally I find if I've played for two or three hours in the same area at the same level fighting the same monsters and don't have anything new it feels far too much like repetitive work and not much like a game, or even if I've had to grind for days in the same six or seven areas. That happened in Alter, I'd get to a point, get sick of current areas and then leave because it seemed I was getting no where and was sick of fighting the same monsters, usually only going back when more areas got added to the game to play in.For me it's not really anti grinding, sinse hay someone who is willing to play for 7 or 8 hours at a stretch deserves to progress, it's just about having enough variety to keep me interested enough to want! to play for 7 or 8 hours, sinse seeing and killing the same monster over and over again for hours on end with no tactics, variety or choice can get fairly old fa
 irly fast.

Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

I'll probably get back into mudding once I find a nice, easy to use lightweight mud client that's free. It's a pitty the developer of RealityMud lost the source code. That thing was perfect.I still have one of the latest versions, but I don't think the source code was included with it, otherwise I could just send it to him. It's very similar to the old gMud, only this thing works with NVDA.You don't need a soundpack to enjoy muds, I was using this client to play AlterAeon, and it worked quite well.I might see if it works with this one, but I want to be able to do what I want. All these classes get confusing, not to mention grinding for days, just to level up.Grinding is probably what made me stop playing AlterAeon, I hope this isn't like that.Endless grinding is enough to make anyone stop playing.

This game looks so great, but the thing that holds me back is that it deals with systems that I am utterly unfamiliar with.  I want to just start out and easily choose stuff.  Stat rolling and the like tends to feel a little insurmountable to me, but I'll give it a go.  You have a lot of systems and updates that look great.

What I liked about the game when I actually played was the quests followed an overarching storyline. Much better than "Kill this cause he killed a dog!" quests. Super busy now unfortunately, but hoping at some point I can start playing again when that all calms down.

okay. Crafting is great. you can craft EQS. You can collect items to craft in your crafting  kit. We don't use waypoints like in alter eon or anything. but we do use teleporters. These teleporters helps us to move around the game. you can teleport to any zones on the game. If you type recall, it takes you back to where you started off on the game. the teleporters takes you to safe places in the zone. then you can explore around from there. If there's anything I left out, let me know.

I like craftingplayerinteraction very much. It is funny if you can do something for other players what makes you more usefull in the community or a group.

Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

Well, I started on the game last night. I have to say, so far this is one of the better DND style muds I've seen. The staff are present and friendly, and the magic system is pretty true to DND so far minus some of the annoyances. I'm only level five though so maybe higher level spells bring those back? I've seen item retrieval quests, crafting quests, and kill quests so far, and it looks like the crafting system has potential, but I haven't dabbled in that too much yet.

Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

Greetings, my name is Mosheh, my staff character on Luminari is named Zusuk.Just to answer some questions and clarify:We have 11 base classes as Rishi mentioned earlier, we have 3 prestige classes that are unlocked via account experience and the list of prestige classes will be every-growing.  There are 20 character levels with an additional 10 epic levels for a total of 30 levels.  The way the class system works is you can gain in any class as long as you qualify up to the grand total of 30 levels with a maximum of 3 classes.  An example of a maximum level character could be a 10th level warrior, 10th level cleric, 10th level wizard. The mechanics are the game are heavily influenced from game systems such as Dungeons and Dragon 3rd edition, D20 and Pathfinder gaming systems. The quests can be of various nature:  killing monsters, finding locations, turning in items, finding a NPC, assembling objects, etc.Mr. Rishi has honored u
s with his presence on our staff to help us build the tools we need to make our game fully compatible with the VI community. An example of this is you can skip our ASCII map while we work out a playable solution via a teleport object the player starts with. Please we invite folks to log in the game and let us know how we can improve the interface for your gaming needs.

So It's nothing much like aardwolf. We've got two main class, and then subclasses. we've got quests and other things to do. you can craft and craft your own tools and such. It's different from aardwolf. you can check us out on www.luminarimud.com for more info.

Re: Welcome to LuminariMUD. (Open for new players.)

Hi. just a couple of questions. First, does the game have actual quests where you do things or are they auto kill quests? also, what about remorts and multiclass and stuff like that? Is the game more an aardwolf style hack n slash, or does it have more  things to do such as crafting and what not.You mention "accessibility for the game client" well as you probably know, most Vi/blind players use clients that work with screen readers namely mushclient or vipmud. If sounds and msp are being implemented this could be good (both will do it though you need the full version of vipmud), however how compatible with screen readers a custom game client would be I'm not sure. What would help would be things like low spam modes, )particularly in fast battles), and some commands to find directions or take the place of things like ascii maps (if any), which tend to be a pain with screen readers.
