into noise by
dithering, making it inaudible. What I want to know is, where does this
sinc function thingy come into it, if the DAC is just outputting the
level determined by the samples?
Note I am not stating anything with certainty - really I am asking how
does this work?!

at higher amplitudes but
in signal terms this is increasing the S/N ratio rather than reducing
distortion due to this step effect, if the signal is dithered! In an
undithered signal, it would indeed reduce distortion.

noise!) my guess is they generated it
as a 16-bit wav test tone mathematically on a PC, which is easy enough
to do.
I proposed what they did in my last post. Please have a read again
carefully:

You are quite right to say that no real music is encoded like that! And
I've actually agreed with most of your comments, which makes me think
we've been coming at it from different angles.

wave shape (because in fact we can assume it's NOT a
square wave - a square wave would require an infinite series of
harmonics yet we know the data is band limited to satisfy Nyquist).

true. If you
want to use DSP then I won't argue. But I would add, try to fix the
physical space (the cause of most problems) as much as possible first.
