accompanied him on
different trip. Don't give up keep looking.

Cheri,
Thanks for that info. I've viewed the ship manifest that shows [who I believe
is] my Great-Grandfather, Joao Tavares on Ellis Island Records from 1893. I
think it was him because his obituary says he arrived in USA at age 20, so the
math seems right. I assumed that he came thru New

My great-grandfather's name was changed from Seriqui to SerequY which made it
hard for me to find him on the manifest. Another relative was transcribed as
SereGue. And don't eventry to figure out my Austrian grandmother's name in
census reports!

I haven't checked yet, but I think there might be more than one Joao

NB, Providence, etc. he came through one of those ports BUT it is highly
possible he came through NY also .

Hello Joe
When I first saw your post I dismissed it because I was sure that I didn't
have any Batatas in my database.
Well it ends up that I do and that they may fit into you extended family.
Beacause I don't have very much I'll just drop it here, see below. Hope that it
helps.

Tomas,
I have the card that was pinned to my grandmother while she traveled from
the Azores to the US. It has the date and name of the ship. I found the ship

I located one Joao Tavares on Ellis Island Records arriving in NY in 1893.
Here's what I do know for sure;

My grandfather, Edmund Sebastian RAPOZA Sr. was born in 1918 in New

My grandfather's only living sibling is my great Aunt who is now 86.

I do know about other ports of entry and that Ellis Island doesn't
always mean that particular point of entry.
My grandfather himself told me he had entered through Ellis Island. He
also took the train from New York to Oakland with a ticket his brother
