Thanks for your interest. I'd appreciate any assistance I located one Joao Tavares on Ellis Island Records arriving in NY in 1893. Here's what I do know for sure; My great-grandfather was Joao Pedro Tavares. He was born in the village of Agua de Pau on the island of St. Michael, Azores on June 12, 1873. His father's name was Jose Pedro Tavares. His mother's name was Elena Ignocencia do Coracao de Jesus. He had three brothers. Pedro Tavares, who emigrated to the U.S. also, and resided in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and Jose, and Serafim Tavares who stayed in the Azores. Joao Pedro immigrated to Fall River, Massachusetts. He Married Maria Pereira who he met in Fall River. She was born in Warwick, Bermuda. They had 8 children, including my grandfather, Alfred Tavares, who died when my dad was 2 years old. The only info I have is mostly from obituaries, and a baptismal record from the Azores. I found Joao Pedro Tavares in an un-marked grave in Norte Dame Cemetery in Fall River, Massachusetts. He is buried alone. Died in 1940. This made me sick to see this. I brought my dad to see the unmarked grave. He vaguely remembered him, but was as upset as I was to see this man in an unmarked grave. In 2007 my wife and I located his baptismal record in the library in Sao Miguel, Azores. That's how I obtained his date of birth. With this information my dad and I purchased a nice headstone for his grave: Joao Pedro Tavares June 12, 1873 - October 13, 1940. His obituary says John Peter Tavares, but I though it was best to spell his name out in Portuguese. I'd love to see the manifest from when he arrived in the US, but I think I'm lucky to know as much as I do about him. Bruce A. Tavares

Chances are if he settled in NB, Providence, etc. he came through one of those ports BUT it is highly possible he came through NY also . Can you tell us a little more about your great grandfather. Did he have a middle name? Do you know the name of his parents? Where did he settle? Wife, Children? A little busy these days helping a family member so running in and out but I will try and fit some research in when I am at home.
