[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with Translation - Marriage of Manoel Martins de Gouveia Appolinaria de Jesus de Faria - 1876 Rabo de Peixe
Not that it makes any difference, but I think I see a faint crossing of the first letter in Apolonia's occupation leading me to tecedeira (weaver) instead of lavadeira. It only captured my interest because I have records that show my great great grandmother Rita de Jesus was a tecedeira in Rabo de Peixe about the same time. She was listed as a fiadeira (spinner) on her marriage to Francisco Pacheco de Mello in 1875; and then as a tecedeira on my great grandfather's (Ventura Pacheco de Mello) baptism in 1885. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with Translation - Manoel Martins de Gouveia Baptism 1851, Rabo de Peixe
Hello Cousin, I would like to know about José's descendant line and will be glad to share everything I have in my files. My ancestor Rosa Emilia Carreiro, José's daughter, married Antonio Jacinto de Faria, in Rabo de Peixe on 1849. Their daughter Maria Carreiro married Manuel Tavares de Medeiros, in Rabo de Peixe on 1874, and they emigrated to Brazil on 1891. As to Manuel Martins de Gouveia and Maria da Luz, I have researched all their ancestors. This line goes back to several settlers of the island of São Miguel, e.g.: Afonso Enes do Couto; João Lopes, dos Mosteiros; Diogo de Oliveira de Vasconcelos; Rui Tavares; Francisco Anes, da Praia; Martim Anes Furtado de Sousa; Afonso Anes da Costa Cogumbreiro; Pedro Velho de Travassos; Jorge Velho. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for Bride's age in marriage papers
No. About 1860 forwards, they include the age. I say about because when they make it a rule and then have to spread the word about the rule and then get people into complying with the rule...well, it can take a little bit of time. Thanks, JR - that’s some great information for me to continue discovering more about my Mom’s maternal side. My reading of the language is getting better but the crazy handwriting and background bleeds makes it difficult at time. Thanks so much! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Fwd: Interested in Portuguese citizenship
I received my citizenship about a year ago. I was required to take a Portuguese exam offered by the University of Lisbon at San Jose State University. At the time exam was only offered twice a year. Exam took about three hours and included comprehension, writing, and conversation and cost about $100.00. My guess is that the ability to speak Portuguese will continue to be required. On 29 July an alteration to the Portuguese Nationality Act was approved in order to consider the grandchildren of Portuguese citizens Portuguese by origin. In sum, under the newly enacted law, obtaining citizenship depends on three requirements: (i) knowledge of the Portuguese language; (ii) regular visits to Portugal; and (iii) the applicant cannot have been found guilty of a crime with a prison sentence over 3 years. I attach hereto our Legal News Alert on the new law. If you feel you meet these requirements, kindly complete the assessment form attached hereto.
