RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with Father's place of Birth

2019-03-06 Thread Tony Matthews
Just a small point regarding the naming of the Sandwich Islands. Capt James
Cook discovered them in January 1778 and named them after the Earl of Sandwich.
Captain Cook was British and explored the both Pacific & Atlantic making many
maps of lands previously unknown at that time. Rosemary is right about the
Azores being called the Western Islands, this persisted until the late 1800’s
according to some official papers concerning my ancestor from the Azores! Tony

Leonor, it does say Isla de Sandwich which is what the Hawaiian Islands were
known as because they were 'discovered' by the Earl of Sandwich.  The Azores
Islands were known as the 'Western Islands' in the USA for a long time. When I
was first starting to do my research I thought it meant Hawaii, that's West of
California, right?! Never assume, that should be everones motto.

2016-10-13 Thread Tony
My Grandmother always told us that she was born on Hilo Hawaii. I have
tired for a long time to find out for sure and have not been able to do so.
Her names was Agnes Pavao, born in 1895. Her father was Manuel Pavao and
mother Antonia Martins (Frietas) When she was married to August Frietas
they had a daughter named Mary born in 1889. Mr Frietas died and she
married Manuel Pavao which was my Great Grandfather. I know she was in
Oakland in 1908 because that is when she married my Grandfather. I have
their marriage License. Yes, she got married at thirteen,if that was her
real age at the time. If there is anyone out there that may be able to help
it would be greatly appreciated.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Priest in Terceira

2016-10-10 Thread Tony
My Great Uncle was a Priest in Terceira. His name was Father Henrique de
Sousa Avila. A native of the parish of Santa Barbara. He died in 1968. His
final resting place was Rua Cinco de Outubro,a parish of Conceicao, Angra.
He had a blind sister named Amelia. The cemetery that he was buried is
Livramento of Angra. I was wondering if there is anyone who may remember
them or if it is possible to get a picture of their graves?

One my favorite beefs is for RODRIGUES.

People often use a Q and spell it RodriQues for some strange reason.

The proper spelling is important too in the genealogy programs.  They get
uploaded to Family Tree DNA and yet the matches appear to have nothing in
common with my dad (Sao Miguel ancestry) because someone misspelled it to Sao
MiQuel. --

[AZORES-Genealogy] Stuffing

2012-08-27 Thread Tony Rodrigues
Hey guys, one last request for a recipe, my Grandmother had a reciepe for
turkey Portuguese stuffing that was to die for, I used to look forward to her
stuffing, it was that great.

Does anyone have a recipe for stuffing from the old country, she came from Sao
Miguel, Maderia.

Thanks in advance

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Francis Joseph

2012-05-23 Thread Tony Matthews
Thanks Anita for your own interesting story.  Yes, I did try using the
Francisco Jose moniker but so far no luck with that even.  We suspect he
angliscised his name which
may make it harder to trace and even more so if he has dropped off the last
portion of his birth name or changed it completely as some did!. I haven't
been able to find which ship he supposedly jumped from either which doesn't
help.  I did read when scanning the shipping records, there were instances of
escaping sailors drowning in their attempt to jump ship.
Guess I'll just to be patient and apparently I am not, judging by the re-action
from my sister niece when we shopped for clothes for my mother yesterday.
I'll leave women to shop alone in future lol. Tony

Hi Tony,

My GG Grandfather was also from Flores, Azores (Ponta Delgada)... Left
as 14yr old jumped from a whaling ship in Wellington at about 18yrs.
Eventually became naturalised married an English Settlers' daughter
- they had 9 children in NZ.

We found that his name changed from the original, perhaps officially
when signing his naturalisation documents...The NZ family knew him as
Manuel Jose Bernard, yet he was Jose Bernardo de Almeida at birth. He
has a few relatives  also called Francisco Jose, but the DOB does not
match - could be a cousin!

We've pieced together much of Manuels tree re ancestors thanks to this
group 'Azores Nation' website... Still hoping to find some more of
his siblings their descendants.

Let us know how you get on,

Anita

Hello Jools, yes we did connect some time back and you were very helpful then.
Your Francis Joseph, definitely is not my man at all (even if the Archives did
try to tell me different!) and as we know his back ground is well
authenticated/documented which is really great for his descendants.  He was
also naturalised.  Thanks again for your comments. Tony

The only 2 cents I can think of for Tony is  at first  I thought hmm at least I
haven't seen that many  Francis Josephs.

I tried visualibg all the common names and then it hut me:  his name in the
records of the Azores  was probably FRANCISCO JOSE.- not Francis Joseph.   I
don't know if this sheds a sliver of  light  on anything.

Hi Tony

Cheri is correct about the documents that will lead you to know where in the
Azores he came from.

If you could find the wife's name then you could look on pioneer index for more
info.  That is how I discovered info that lex ne to uncover much about our 2
gold miner great grandfathers (actually my husband's). If ge married an English
girl, maybe she was Wesleyan.  I learned that they were dissenters fm the
Church of England, as was the case in one of our ancestors.  Your gr
grandfather was born a few year before our 2guys 1836 and 1838 but there were
several siblings born before them.  They were drawn to Australia by the
goldfields.  Any family stories that would give more of a clue?
I was able to get the marriage certificate for my husband's gr grandfather and
that's how I knew they were married by theWesleyan minister.

I alzo found them on unassisted passengers comment on the ship Water Lily in
1853.  Are there museums in the New Zealand area where they preserve names and
history like they have in Victoria.

Try cemetery where the family lived.  Sounds like stayed put in one area (?) so
if he was a carpenter maybe he made furniture- the old newspapers had many ads.
I learned slot about out guys from the Creswick and Clunes daily Register and
Advertiser.  Then I sent away to the public records office Victoria for each of
18 articles where their names are mentioned.  It is tedios but peopke in
Victoria were amazingly helpful as I live in the US.  I hope you keep looking
and you will find him.  My husband's gr grandfathers were J J DE LIMA and their
father was Antonio José.  Best of luck              Maria Elena

I have read that the Açor, or goshawk, which does not exist in the Azores, was
mistaken for the Milhafre, or buzzard, which is plentiful in the Azores and
resembles a hawk (they are both birds of prey with talons and sharp beaks).
Apparently the goshawk was plentiful in the hills and mountains of Belmonte,
from where Gonçalo Velho Cabral came, for there was a tiny chapel inthe hills
surrounding Belmonte dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Açores, which pre-dated the
discovery of the islands, and the Velho Cabrals were the chapel's patrons, or
so I have read.

I picked this from wikipedia, and sounds interesting. What's the meaning of
Açores? Açor in Portuguese is the name of one species of hawk (usually
explained from Latin accipiter), but there's no hawk in Azores . An alternative
explanation is that Azores was a corruption of Italian azorres, modern Italian
azurra blue, meaning the Blue Islands .

I  am not sure if I can add to wat you have, but I've done some
research on these lines.  I came up with similar confusing
information.

One question I have.  Was the Consulado Geral...i.e. the Consulate
logs in Hawaii consulted for the passage on the Monarch and the
passage on the City of Paris. This would tell us if there were two
arrivals and what the families looked like whe when then arrived in
Hawaii. As I understand your info. below you've got the passport
registration from DeMello's book and then the ship manifest for the
City of Paris.  Is that right?

I haven't gone over this line in a long time, but I see some things.
1.  There is a pretty big age difference between Francisco Jose de
Souza and Jacintha Candida--22 years.  This could imply a second
marriage.
2.  Francisco married to Joanna Erminia da Costa Maiato don't seem to
appear on the Monarch's ship manifest.  Perhaps they never went to
Hawaii?  Presence of a passport entry does not always mean the couple
went to Hawaii.
3.  There is also confusion with that entry.  Eva aged 12 is listed as
a niece of Francisco Jose d'Souza.  She appears to be the same age as
Eva listed in the ship entry for Francisco and Jacinta.  Same Eva or a
coincidence in names?

I did find out alot about Eva.  She married Antonio Joaquim Fernandes,
son of Andre Joaquim Fernandes and Rosa Jacinta Duarte.  Living with
the couple in 1900 s Irmma [sic] Souza and Rosey Souza.  Both are
listed as sister-in-laws to Antono Joaquim Fernandes.  This would
imply that the Eva who married Antonio is the daughter of Francisco
Jse de Souza and Jacintha Candido.

Antonio and Eva are on page 120 of PHM.  This is where it gets more
confusing.  Eva's parents are listed as Francisco Jose de Souza and
Miquelina Rosa da Cunha.

So, we have a couple confusing things going on here. First we have a
ship manifest showing Jacintha being the Mother of these children.
But, the childre themselves claim Miquelina as their Mother.  And to
further confuse it, the Francisco in the passport record claims
Miquelina is the widow!

Then add in the age discrepancy between Francisco and his wife
Jacintha.

I found Jacintha living with her daughter Anna (Souza) Brum in 1900.
She is a widow.  So, there is no more to find out about Francisco
there.

I also have the marriage record for Francisco and Jacintha's son Jose
who married Maria Mary Medeiros.  On his marriage cert, he lists his
parents as Francisco Souza and Jacintha Candida Ferreira.

To me it's confusing.  It's possible that the children are confused on
the names of their parents.  It's possible that the Francisco listed
on the City of Paris isn't really as old as he says.  Or, he his and
Jacintha is wife #2.  Miquelina being wife #1.

I think the ony way to sort this out is going to be to get the
Consulate log in Hawaii record.  I don't believe the passport record
for 1884 exists, so that's not available to you.  Also, it might be
helpful to find Francisco and Jacintha's death records.  You probably
won't find Francisco's since he died before 1900.  Then to go to the
records for Rabo de Peixe to see if these children can be located and
who is listed as the Mother and Father.  That last one may be the only
way to sort it all out.

I'm not sure my information helps or not.

Mel

The NEPS website shows the marriage date of 17 Sep 1710 in Ribeiras. Maria
Abreu died 30 April 1750. Also, NEPS shows children Agueda b 1719, Francisco
b 1720 and Antonio b 1724. You may already know this, but I didn't see it

I have seen these two names before. But, not on my line. I'll try to look

Hi Henrietta,

I am glad we found a connection!!! It is always a pleasure to find cousins
around the world!

I am asking your attention to the little differences we have. I would like to
clear my doubts.

a)  Where may I find that BOAVENTURA PIMENTEL is also PAIS as his father
was?
b)  I do not understand your note saying that FRUCTUOSO and MANUEL are
brothers!!! I have a MANUEL son of BOAVENTURA and an ANTÓNIO son of MANUEL.
c)   You say that FRUCTUOSO and MANUEL are Brothers…

Do you have any dates for these persons?

I can send you  a GEDCOM. Can you do the same?

I also have copies of the original marriage lists from S. Mateus, PRAIA,
Graciosa. If you like any information please let me know about.

Thank you very much

Happy New year!

 Hi All,

If you ever thought of learning basic Portuguese Dick Eastman's news
letter has a article about a free course on line. It is published by the
state department and has been used for a number of years. I looked at
the Italian program and it is the same one I took when I was in Italy
 in
1977.  Even today I can still remember a lot of it. There is one for
Portuguese which includes audio tapes. You can read the article at the
 link below.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry Research

2009-11-30 Thread Tony Rodrigues
I am looking for information on my ancestry, and I would very much appreciate
any all help in trying to find some information.

I am researching information on Rodrigues Mello, both family's are from
Portugal, The Rodrigues's were born In Funchal Ponto DePargo, Madeira, the
Mello's were born in
Terceira, Azores, Portugal.

I am in need of Birth, Death, Marriage records, most were done in different
parishes, what I need to know is, are there any sites where I can go to
research, download or make copies, are there any in english or are they all in
portuguese.

Are there any Phone Numbers that I can call in Portugal where I can ask about
copies, I would appreciate any help that anyone can provide.

Thank you very much.
