Freguesia in Lagoa, west to east:
Cabouco, Santa Cruz, Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Agua de Pau, Ribeira Cha.
You need to do more U.S. based research first. But if you want to use the
needle-in-the-haystack method, you can start searching around the
freguesias of your ancestors.

Yes that was a typo ,My grandfather got married to her in the USA in 1895
so i researched for passports from St Michaels 1895 1894 and so forth until
i came upon the missing passport records where i think it would be. Then
again i was looking For Jose da Silva Margarida so what part of that
You typed somewhere about the 1700s. Sao Miguel passaportes do not go back
to the 1700s. Unless you made a typo. You should probably start a new
thread, title it with her name, approximate year of birth, and Sao Miguel
island. In the body put what research you have done on her in the U.S.

Cheri thanks for your words of wisdom but i have already taken that into
consideration. My grandfather was from Lagoa so my thinking is that she
was from close by,and the answer is probably in the passports from
there, but as you know the years that i want coenside with the years that

Paul,
Knowing someone was from somewhere on Sao Miguel (70 or so churches,
although a few less churches in the 1770s) is like knowing someone is from
the United States and you don't know which of the 50 states to look in. And
you can't use Ancestry to search either, as the CCA isn't set up like
Thanks for all of your input i have tried looking for Anna daughter of
Antonio Cabral da Siva and Anna Lucianna still no luck yet she was born
around 1776 somewhere over there in St Michaels. i though that going by the
indices would help, but now i'm not so sure

An index is an alphabetical list of names
Thank you Cheri that is what i thought and i am not looking for a John
Mello. I have found all my relatives by going to Lagoa St Michaels Santa
Cruz now they are spreading out to different parishes and all those are
still located on the same island. I have located 19 records so far
An index is an alphabetical list of names, typically found at the end of a
book. The book is usually chronological. So the index usually lists the
content by name. Or at least now-a-days, in America.
I don't know in what parish you are looking. If you are on FamilySearch or
Ancestry.com, they
Let me redo my question, what is the purpose behind indexing ? in some of
the parishes but not all.If i am looking for a John Mello how would going
to indexing help me in finding him or does it.

Hi again Walter,
I'll reply to this in public, as it seems others may have the same doubt.
You asked if I got 'special' access to create the database.
I have no special access at all. I simply use the same tools you use (a web
browser). But the browser I use to create the database is a
Hi Walter,
There are actually two sites, the old etombo.com has been in a standstill
since 2011. In mid-2013, I started creating http://tombo.pt, but I only
made the web crawlers that index the Azores and mainland Portugal (I still
miss Madeira and the special Guimarães archive). But then I
Hi all,
Note that the number is now lower by 69: 4243. This is because they removed
the 74 index books they had added on the 17th (
http://tombo.pt/content/218-novos-livros-paroquiais-em-17122013), and
re-added them back, but this time grouped as only 5 books (
Rick,
I can also recommend that you check my website http://tombo.pt everyday..
If that number in front of Centro de Conhecimento dos Açores moves from
4312, just go into the articles below, where the new parish books are
listed. I'm running a simple book finder script every 24h, which will
That was FUNNY!
Some things are better left in the native language!

Joao,
You're doing a great job and treasured service. I use http://tombo.pt often
and have noticed a big improvement since you got deeply involved. I don't
know what the archives would do without you since the site seamed to be at
a standstill for quite some time. Keep up the good work,
