Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: indices

2017-01-15 Thread Sue Q
I think this is an excellent explanation. I've used many of the indexes
that appear in various Graciosa registers. Sometimes they are helpful in
that they point me to a record. I would like to add that, although I have
found most of the indexes at the back I have occasionally found some in the
front of the book, so I always look at the first few pages and the last few
pages and hope that I'm lucky! They do help but sometimes even if I don't
find want I'm looking for in an index I'll look through the records for the
years I want anyway just in case there was omission. Sue

Freguesia in Lagoa, west to east:
Cabouco, Santa Cruz, Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Agua de Pau, Ribeira Cha.

You need to do more U.S. based research first. But if you want to use the
needle-in-the-haystack method, you can start searching around the
freguesias of your ancestors.

You typed somewhere about the 1700s. Sao Miguel passaportes do not go back
to the 1700s. Unless you made a typo. You should probably start a new
thread, title it with her name, approximate year of birth, and Sao Miguel
island. In the body put what research you have done on her in the U.S.
Maybe someone has a source for you to check. Cheri

Paul,

Knowing someone was from somewhere on Sao Miguel (70 or so churches,
although a few less churches in the 1770s) is like knowing someone is from
the United States and you don't know which of the 50 states to look in. And
you can't use Ancestry to search either, as the CCA isn't set up like
Ancestry.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: indices

2017-01-12 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Most of the Indexes I have seen on the films in the Acores are indexed by
first name. In an index you will see all the first names of the babies that are
baptized arranged in alphabetical order with the parents’ names. They will also
appear in chronological order. In this type of index you will have to go down
a long list of girls named Maria and look at the parent’s names to find the one
you want. Then you will have to go to the book and page to look at the actual
record. I have seen some marriage indexes arranged like this as well but they
are always arranged by grooms names. So you will see all the men that have a
name beginning with Jose followed by their last name and the brides name. They
are usually in chronological order. So you will look down the list till you
find your Jose de Sousa that married a Maria de Jesus. Once again you will have
to go to the book and page to look at the record to see if that is the one you
want. I have seen other lists that just list the marriages in order as they
appear in the book so you will have to look through the whole list to find the
one you want.

Indexes at best are spotty in the Acores. Some parishes have good indexes and
others have no indexes at all. Some indexes are listed as indexes and others
are at the last page(s) of the book and you would have no idea they existed
unless you looked.

consisting of Baptizem's, Deaths ,and Marriages downloaded them to my files

one by one there based on the years that i figured they would be from the

six more that should be in a particular parish but aren't . So the search

2013-12-23 Thread João Ventura
Hi again Walter,

I'll reply to this in public, as it seems others may have the same doubt.
You asked if I got 'special' access to create the database.

I have no special access at all. I simply use the same tools you use (a web
browser). But the browser I use to create the database is a command-line
browser, which I can use to scan the page for stuff that interests me. In
the case of Portugal on one hand, and the Azores on the other, I simply
created two scripts that handle the different interfaces of the websites.
Then I dump the information of interest into a database which I use to
display the data on the tombo.pt website.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Indices added to Sao Sebastiao

2013-12-20 Thread João Ventura
Hi Walter,

There are actually two sites, the old etombo.com has been in a standstill
since 2011. In mid-2013, I started creating http://tombo.pt, but I only
made the web crawlers that index the Azores and mainland Portugal (I still
miss Madeira and the special Guimarães archive). But then I stopped working
on it after creating the 'daily new stuff' page. I've now created a simple
user interface (it will get prettier...). So the standstill in tombo, for
the last 6 months was also my responsability. :)

Joao,

You're doing a great job and treasured service. I use http://tombo.pt often
and have noticed a big improvement since you got deeply involved. I don't
know what the archives would do without you since the site seamed to be at
a standstill for quite some time. Keep up the good work, you are really
appreciated.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Indices added to Sao Sebastiao

2013-12-19 Thread João Ventura
Indeed :)

It's possible to ask Google not to translate it.. Just hover on top of the
translated text for a second, and Google will display a window with a link
to "Contribute a better translation". I've sorted out a few of the most
complicated ones: Guarda -> Guard, Horta -> Garden*, Faro -> Trails, White
Castle..

The site is ready to eventually switch to English without using Google, but
I really don't have the time for it at the moment.

Joao C. Ventura

* I scratched my head for a while on this one, before I gave up and used
the hover to find out what the original term was.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Indices added to Sao Sebastiao

2013-12-19 Thread João Ventura
Rick,

I can also recommend that you check my website http://tombo.pt everyday..
If that number in front of "Centro de Conhecimento dos Açores" moves from
4312, just go into the articles below, where the new parish books are
listed. I'm running a simple book finder script every 24h, which will
guarantee that number to be correct at about 6:00 UTC.

I've added a simple in-line translation service by Google, which
non-speakers can use to turn the site into their own language. Sometimes
with hilarious results, like this case: http://tombo.pt/f/pdl10

Regards,

João Ventura
