Scott, I hope you don't mind but I'm taking this back to the list, I
really would like as many folks looking at this as possible, and if we
figure it out the solution should end up in the list archive.

However, switching the bacula shell from /sbin/nologin to /bin/bash
(the same as user postgresql) did not change the behavior, so I
restored it to how the RPMs created it. it did allow me to do the "psql
bacula" wtihout error, but the director still failed with exactly the
same message.

In bacula-dir.conf is the declaration
    dbname = bacula; user = bacula; password = ""
I used the PostgreSQL admin section of Webmin to set a password for the
user and entered it in bacula-dir.conf, but there was no change in
behavior.

Any other suggestions?

[Bacula-users] Pipe data through an SSH tunnel

2006-11-08 Thread Baard Aase
In order to take backup of hosts that is offsite, I'll need to pipe
connections through SSH or something like that. I can connect to all
hosts using SSH, but I can't make connections from the hosts to the
backup server, this means that I need something like ssh -R
9103:mybacula-sd:9103 myhost sleep 120 to create the tunnel.
Preferably would I also pipe the communication from the director to the
host through ssh ( -L X:localhost:9102).

Is it possible to let bacula manage the creation of such tunnels, and
how would I configure the FileDaemon and the Director to make this work?
Can I for example override the hostname of the StorageDaemon in the
FileDaemon settings, or would I have to override it using the hosts file?

[Bacula-users] Backup Method with Multiple Media Types - AIT2 Issue

2006-11-08 Thread Alan To
  Hi All

Many Thanks to everybody who helped out on the multiple media types and
correctly scheduling the Full and Differential backups for me. The schedule
and media switch works now, but...

Something is wrong with my Sony AIT2 tape device (or tapes) itself - see log
below.
I've checked Google for ERR-Invalid argument, and have since used my Cleaning
Tape a number of times on the drive and also tried a few new blank tapes on the
device.

This might not be directly a Bacula issue as I am getting the same errors with
btape/test and tar commands.

Here is my tar test commands and responses:
[@ bacula]# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
[@ bacula]# tar cvf /dev/nst0 .
./
./mtx-changer
./grant_mysql_privileges
./grant_bacula_privileges
./bacula-sd.conf
tar: /dev/nst0: Cannot write: Invalid argument
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now [@ bacula]# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
[@ bacula]# tar tvf /dev/nst0
tar: /dev/nst0: Cannot read: Invalid argument
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now [@ bacula]# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind

Here is my btape SonyAIT test results:
*test
...
08-Nov 09:21 btape: btape Error: block.c:552 Write error at 0:0 on device
/dev/nst0. ERR=Invalid argument.
08-Nov 09:21 btape: btape Error: Backspace record at EOT failed.
ERR=Input/output error
btape: btape.c:782 Error writing block to device.
*quit

Can anybody help me out on this please? Is my tape device itself faulty or not
compatable? Or are there other configurations that I need to make first?

[Bacula-users] should I consider this a bug?- How to send OK messages to one address and ERROR messages no another.

2006-11-08 Thread Jaime Ventura
Hello
This is my second email concerning this subject.
Since no one answer me, and I've tested all possible ways (i think)
should I consider this a bug?
Thanks

Message I sent before:

 I'm trying to set the messages resource so that messages about
successful backups/restores are sent to one email address and the
messages concerning error backups/restore to another.
 Here goes my resource:

Messages {
   Name = MessagesForUsers
   mailcommand = /usr/sbin/bsmtp -h 127.0.0.1 -f \\(Bacula\) %r\ -s
\Bacula: %t %e of %c %l\ %r
   operatorcommand = /usr/sbin/bsmtp -h 127.0.0.1 -f \\(Bacula\) %r\
-s \Bacula: Intervention needed for %j\ %r
   mail = [EMAIL PROTECTED] = all, !skipped
   operator = [EMAIL PROTECTED] = mount
   mail = [EMAIL PROTECTED] = info, warning, saved, !error, !fatal
   MailOnError = [EMAIL PROTECTED] = all, !skipped, !terminate

   console = all, !skipped, !saved
# WARNING! the following will create a file that you must cycle from
# time to time as it will grow indefinitely. However, it will
# also keep all your messages if they scroll off the console.
#
   append = /var/bacula/log = all, !skipped
}

 The problem is that I get both ERROR and OK messages on the address
where only OK messages should go ([EMAIL PROTECTED] in my case).
 Any ideas?

Thanks,

Firstly, note that PostgreSQL user names are not the same as Linux login names
(both have to set up independently). Confusion arises because the psql
command uses the current Linux login name as the PostgreSQL user name by
default.

Do any of these commands works?

psql -U bacula -d bacula
psql -U bacula -d bacula --password
psql -U postgresql -d bacula
psql -U postgresql -d bacula --password

One of these should produce the PostgreSQL interactive terminal.

If you get this, what do these commands print?

\dt
\dp
\du
select * from version;

 Before I cause a panic, there is a cut/paste error in my description

 There is nothing wrong with Sparse + Compression, it should say Works

 not Restore broken.

Thanks for the update -- yes, if sparse + compression were broken, I would
be very worried ... :-)

 I've got to go now. Thanks for the explaination.
 I'll respond as soon as I can, but I would also like to see Landon's
 response.

 Perhaps if I explained the problem:

 Currently (as of 1.39.27)

 No filters = Works fine
 Sparse = Works fine
 Compression = Works fine
 Encryption = Works fine

 Sparse + Compression = Restore broken
 Sparse + Encryption = Restore broken
 Sparse + Compression + Encryption = Restore broken
 Compression + Encryption = Restore broken

 With my fix ( 1.39.27):

 All combinations work fine.

 But restoration of old backups (1.39.x) using encryption alone or in
 combination with other filters is broken. Since all cases of encryption
 in
 combination with anything else were already broken, that just leaves
 encryption alone. I could special case the handling of just encryption
 so
 that it would be stored differently than when used in combination with
 other
 filters. This would allow old encrypted backups to be read at the
 expense
 of having two versions of the encryption and decryption code.

 Since this is a brand new feature I don't think changing the archive
 format
 at this point would affect that many people. Particularly since the
 archives are unreadable if they've used it in combination with
 compression
 or sparse file handling.

 I think it is safer to just say that previously written archives using
 encryption aren't readable and should be recreated.

 This code is backwards compatible for everything except encrypted data.
 Previously compressed backups will still work fine.

 I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but here are my thoughts:

 If it breaks something that previously worked, then it is does not fit
 with the Bacula philosophy of always being able to read Volumes written
 by
 prior versions.

 If something was previously broken -- i.e. could not be read -- then we
 should attempt to fix it, if at all possible.

 Maintaining backward Volume compatibility and fixing the problem is the
 best solution. Hopefully this is what you can do ...

 If we *must* create an incompatibility with Volumes written by prior
 versions of Bacula, then we need to think really hard about how to
 handle
 it because to the best of my knowledge this has never happened.

 If certain combinations of options created data that cannot be read
 under
 any conditions, then we need to carefully document it and inform the
 users.

 Landon,

 I've changed the code so that the encryption code prefixes the data
 block
 with a block length prior to encryption.

 The decryption code accumulates data until a full data block is
 decrypted
 before passing it along to the decompression code.

 The code now works for all four scenarios with encryption and
 compression:
 none, encryption, compression, and encryption + compression.
 Unfortunately
 the code is no longer compatible for previously encrypted backups.

 I could add some more code to make the encryption only case work like
 before. However, since this is a new feature in 1.39 and there
 shouldn't
 be
 a lot of existing backups, I would prefer to invalidate the previous
 backups
 and keep the code simpler.

 Also I think we should have a design rule that says any data filters
 like
 encryption, compression, etc must maintain the original buffer
 boundaries.

 This will allow us to define arbitrary, dynamically extensible filter
 stacks
 in the future.

 What do you think?

 I'm unfortuntely not in a good position to examine this problem in
 detail,
 but I suggest that we should do our best to keep the old data readable
 by
 any kludge necessary.

 One possible solution for the new code that you have implemented is to
 put
 the new compressed data in a new stream -- i.e. a different one from
 the
 old compressed data -- this could possibly

Hi, Tom
I'm not sure about all GUI consoles available since I use only the

On bacula's gnome-console, once you have you jobs defined, you may
run them manually with the run command(or clicking on the run

[Bacula-users] Bacula BETA encryption bug

2006-11-08 Thread Kern Sibbald
Hello,

As you probably have seen, there is a bug in the BETA version of Bacula
when encryption is used in combination with other options such as
compression or sparse files. This bug makes the backed up data unreadable.

Robert Nelson has summarized the problematic cases (see below), and
supplied a fix.

If I understand Robert's email correctly, this means that if you have
encrypted volumes using additional options (see below), they are
unreadable. We are proposing that the short term workaround is to remove
any additional options you may have and re-backup your data. In the medium
term (about a week), we will release an updated beta with Robert's fixes
(or you can pull them from the current CVS).

As Robert indicates, it could be possible to recover the data in some
circumstances, but we are not planning to implement this.

If you have any problems with this procedure, now is the time to speak up.

Again, this involves only the BETA Bacula and encryption with additional
options (Robert, please correct me if I am mistaken ...)

 Perhaps if I explained the problem:

 No filters = Works fine
 Sparse = Works fine
 Compression = Works fine
 Encryption = Works fine
 Sparse + Compression = Works fine

 Sparse + Encryption = Restore broken
 Sparse + Compression + Encryption = Restore broken
 Compression + Encryption = Restore broken

 With my fix ( 1.39.27):

 All combinations work fine.

 But restoration of old backups (1.39.x) using encryption alone or in

 I think it is safer to just say that previously written archives using

On top of this there are many factors that make archiving this rate very difficult. It is very difficult for a gigabit network to sustain 60 to 80MB/s unless you are using jumbo frames or 2 computers directly connected to each other by a single cable. Then there is the filesystem performance. The problem here is that it is very difficult to archive sustained transfers in this range even with raid because of fragmentation of the data. Even single drives do have STR rates in this range (60 to 80MB/s) but this is only if the operation is sequential and once the drive has to seek performance drops considerably. Then there is the performance of the database.

[Bacula-users] Bacula As Imaging Tool?

Howdy,

What I want to know is has anyone tried using Bacula as a system imaging
tool? Are there any caveats I should be on the lookout for? Any
potential problems people might see?

I have been on the lookout for an alternative system imaging tool to
replace Ghost. I've been testing a few out, but had an idea this
morning. I have a Bacula backup system in place now, why not setup
another Bacula system to be a long term archiving/imaging tool. I think
it could be easy to use and cheap (a good bonus).

The preliminary idea is to use VMWare server to host the master images.
When the images get updated, run a Bacula backup to get the changes into
the imaging system.

To image a computer, use Reatogo-X-Pe with a Bacula client running on
it. Format the disk, do a restore job, and then fix up the MBR/Booting.

It feels like a workable idea.

Thoughts?

Around the 30MB/s mark, according to Bacula logs.

 Is the data compressable?

A mixture - some already compressed, some images, some XML data etc.

The library and the disks are on the same fibre channel fabric, so I
wouldn't expect that to be a bottleneck.

I'm using SQLite for the catalog- would that really make much of a difference?

[Bacula-users] Restored file not found

2006-11-08 Thread DAve
Good morning,

What little time I have to work with the new Bacula install has gone

I wanted to test a restore before turning off my old Bacula install and
I can't seem to find the files! Oddly, everything appears to be working
fine. The restore process functions, I find the file and mark it,

But there is no file in /data/bacula-restores! I've no problems
restoring on my previous Bacula installs. The *one* difference is my
other Bacula installs all have the director, sd, and fd on the same

central director with two storage servers and multiple clients.

I read through the manual thoroughly, or so I thought. Do I need to do
something different for this configuration?

Thanks,

The trickiest bit that I can think of right off would be automating the
process. Most imaging systems like ghost that I've glanced at allow a client
initiated backup, while bacula is more of a server initiated backup. You
would have to set up your install environment to include a bacula console
that is capable of triggering the appropriate restore job.

Beyond that, basically all you'd have to do is script out and automate the
steps in the bare metal recovery section of the recovery chapter.

http://bacula.org/rel-manual/Disast_Recove_Using_Bacula.html

If you do have success with this, it would be great if you could post your
script and notes in the wiki.

I'm seeing sustained rates in the 30MB/sec to 40MB/sec range, both
when backing up the system that hosts the Bacula director, storage
manager, and Postgres database, as well as when backing up
gigabit-connected servers.

 This 60-80MB/s is the drive speed and only if your data gets a 2 to 1
 compression rate as the drive writes natively at around 40MB/s.

The Quantum spec sheet at
http://www.quantum.com/ServiceandSupport/SoftwareandDocumentationDownloads/LTO-3Drives/Index.aspx
is a bit more optimistic, claiming:

Native Sustained Transfer Rate up to 245 GB per hour
Compressed Sustained Transfer Rate up to 324 GB per hour

or 68MB/sec native, and 90MB/sec compressed.

If I try to start the director I get this:

It is probably not running or your password is incorrect.

Note that it's trying to run as bacula. Earlier you suggested I do "psql
bacula" as user postgresql, but I see here that it's not trying to run
as user postgresql. So I tried to do that from that account, but "su
bacula" was disallowed as the user doesn't have shell access:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bacula]# cat /etc/passwd | grep bacula
bacula:x:100:6:Bacula:/var/bacula:/sbin/nologin

However, switching the bacula shell from /sbin/nologin to /bin/bash (the
same as user postgresql) did not change the behavior, so I restored it
to how the RPMs created it. it did allow me to do the "psql bacula"
wtihout error, but the director still failed with exactly the same message.

In bacula-dir.conf is the declaration
dbname = bacula; user = bacula; password = ""
I used the PostgreSQL admin section of Webmin to set a password for the
user and entered it in bacula-dir.conf, but there was no change in behavior.

Any other suggestions?

Firstly, note that PostgreSQL user names are not the same as Linux login names
(both have to set up independently). Confusion arises because the psql
command uses the current Linux login name as the PostgreSQL user name by
default.

Do any of these commands works?

psql -U bacula -d bacula
psql -U bacula -d bacula --password
psql -U postgresql -d bacula
psql -U postgresql -d bacula --password

All of those fail like this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] bacula]# psql -U bacula -d bacula
psql: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "bacula"

I did mess with the password for user bacula last night, the Webmin
console reports that "Requires password?" is set to No for user
postgres. There is no user postgresql, but the error was still the same.

However, if I "su postgres" and immediately do "psql bacula" it happily
drops to the terminal.

One of these should produce the PostgreSQL interactive terminal.

If you get this, what do these commands print?

Generally, released versions have even numbers; odd numbers are built from

Since this fix was very recent there are no released versions available

True. I've never tried to build the Windows side. My only means to do so is

[Bacula-users] Bacula Rescue - Solaris 10 - getdiskinfo errors - error on route command

2006-11-08 Thread A Think Tank

I am trying to go though the rescue procedures / preparation for
Solaris, SunOS 5.10 Generic sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V240, as directed
by the documentation. I have a couple of errors with the command
/usr/local/src/bacula-rescue-1.8.6/solaris/getdiskinfo

Error on if statement

Begin collecting system info
./getdiskinfo: test: argument expected

I changed the if syntax to read:
- if [ -e /etc/fstab ]; then
+ if [ -r /etc/fstab ]; then
for all instances of the -e expression and it seemed to work just fine.
It identified that i have a vfstab file and read that.

Error on route command.

route -n route.bsi
error message
usage: route [ -fnqv ] cmd [[ -qualifers ] args ]

I am just not sure how to fix this, because I am not sure what the
command is trying to gather.
Currently both the df.bsi and route.bsi files are empty. The other
files seem to have been created just fine.

I presume that the df.bsi file should contain data, but again, not sure
what and there was no error message.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

The routing table, this is a linux'ism. Use netstat -rn but be aware
that the output differs slightly.

debian:~# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
.

solaris:~# netstat -rn

Routing Table: IPv4
   Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface
  - - -- -
.

 Currently both the df.bsi and route.bsi files are empty. The other
 files seem to have been created just fine.

 I presume that the df.bsi file should contain data, but again, not sure
 what and there was no error message.

 Thanks in advance,
 Paul

 Note that it's trying to run as bacula. Earlier you suggested I do psql
 bacula as user postgresql, but I see here that it's not trying to run
 as user postgresql. So I tried to do that from that account, but su
 bacula was disallowed as the user doesn't have shell access:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] bacula]# cat /etc/passwd | grep bacula
 bacula:x:100:6:Bacula:/var/bacula:/sbin/nologin

 However, switching the bacula shell from /sbin/nologin to /bin/bash (the
 same as user postgresql) did not change the behavior, so I restored it
 to how the RPMs created it. it did allow me to do the psql bacula
 wtihout error, but the director still failed with exactly the same message.

 In bacula-dir.conf is the declaration
 dbname = bacula; user = bacula; password =
 I used the PostgreSQL admin section of Webmin to set a password for the
 user and entered it in bacula-dir.conf, but there was no change in behavior.

 Any other suggestions?

 Firstly, note that PostgreSQL user names are not the same as Linux login
 names
 (both have to set up independently). Confusion arises because the psql
 command uses the current Linux login name as the PostgreSQL user name by
 default.

 Do any of these commands works?

 psql -U bacula -d bacula
 psql -U bacula -d bacula --password
 psql -U postgresql -d bacula
 psql -U postgresql -d bacula --password

 All of those fail like this:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] bacula]# psql -U bacula -d bacula
 psql: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user bacula

 I did mess with the password for user bacula last night, the Webmin
 console reports that Requires password? is set to No for user
 postgres. There is no user postgresql, but the error was still the same.

 However, if I su postgres and immediately do psql bacula it happily
 drops to the terminal.

Ah, OK, so your main PostgreSQL user is called postgres. I think the
Director's problem is related to the problem you get with

psql -U bacula -d bacula

Check your pg_hba.conf file. It probably lists ident sameuser as the
method and you'll need to change this to something else. You can use
trust if you don't care about security.

 One of these should produce the PostgreSQL interactive terminal.

 If you get this, what do these commands print?

 \dt
 \dp
 \du
 select * from version;

 bacula=# \dt
 List of relations
 ...snipped...

The database structure looks OK to me (though I have tables owned by the
postgres user, not root).

[Bacula-users] btape test Read error

2006-11-08 Thread Kevin Herron
Hi. I'm having a problem completing the btape test routine. The
system is running FreeBSD 6.1-release-p1 on a sparc64. The tape
drive is a Quantum DLT 4000.

mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
tar cvf /dev/nst0 .
mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
tar tvf /dev/nst0

finishes fine, but when I run btape test, I get the following:

shiraz# btape -c ../etc/bacula-sd.conf /dev/nsa0
Tape block granularity is 1024 bytes.
btape: butil.c:272 Using device: /dev/nsa0 for writing.
btape: btape.c:338 open device Drive-1 (/dev/nsa0): OK
*test

=== Write, rewind, and re-read test ===

I'm going to write 1000 records and an EOF
then write 1000 records and an EOF, then rewind,
and re-read the data to verify that it is correct.

This is an *essential* feature ...

btape: btape.c:795 Wrote 1000 blocks of 64412 bytes.
btape: btape.c:469 Wrote 1 EOF to Drive-1 (/dev/nsa0)
btape: btape.c:811 Wrote 1000 blocks of 64412 bytes.
btape: btape.c:469 Wrote 1 EOF to Drive-1 (/dev/nsa0)
btape: btape.c:469 Wrote 1 EOF to Drive-1 (/dev/nsa0)
btape: btape.c:820 Rewind OK.
1000 blocks re-read correctly.

0:1000 on device Drive-1 (/dev/nsa0). ERR=Operation not permitted.
btape: btape.c:832 Read block 1001 failed! ERR=Operation not permitted

I've tried the various settings suggested for FreeBSD, but still
can't get anything working. This is the device section from my
bacula-sd.conf:

Device {
   Name = Drive-1
   Drive Index = 0
   Media Type = DLT-4000
   Archive Device = /dev/nsa0
   AutomaticMount = yes; # when device opened, read it

   #Changed to no
   AlwaysOpen = no;

   #Changed to no
   RemovableMedia = no;

   #Changed to yes
   RandomAccess = yes;

   AutoChanger = no

   #FreeBSD Specific - Added 10/24/06
   Hardware End of Medium = no
   BSF at EOM = yes
   Backward Space Record = no
   Backward Space File = no
   Fast Forward Space File = no
   TWO EOF = yes

# # Enable the Alert command only if you have the mtx package loaded
#  Alert Command = sh -c 'tapeinfo -f %c |grep TapeAlert|cat'
}

If anybody has any suggestions that'd be great!

Thanks, Kevin

[Bacula-users] Server Crash on SLES 10

2006-11-08 Thread Thomas Traeger
Hello list,

Tonight we experienced a server crash during the bacula backup. The last
messages from bacula (captured after reboot in bconsole):

03-Nov 00:43 pdc02-sd: backup_ora01.2006-11-02_21.15.02 Error:

of last block OK, but block numbers differ. Last block=166408 Current

Bytes=303,252,171,056 Blocks=4,700,710 at 03-Nov-2006 00:43.

At the same time there is a logentry in /var/log/messages:

Nov 3 00:43:16 ifs01 kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at
virtual address 0524c3f0

We are using SLES 10 with the latest patches, bacula 1.38.11-3 installed
using the rpm packages provided for Suse 10.1. The hardware is a Fujitsu
Siemens RX300R3 and a Dell PowerVault 122T with a Quantum SDLT320 drive.

This is not the first problem with this combination, in fact we had a
similar? problem last weekend. A tape was claimed to be full at the size
of around 40GB of 160GB uncompressed. After inserting a new tape and
trying to labelling it the Dell PowerVault stopped working and had to be
replaced.

Is anyone else experiencing such strange things? Is there a connection
to recently reported problems with a stock Suse 10.1 Kernel? AFAIK SLES
10 is based on Suse 10.1.

Thanks,

Thomas

This is somewhat frustrating when I'm trying to look up special sections

[Bacula-users] archiving / filesets

2006-11-08 Thread mike castleman
Hi,

We are trying to use bacula for archiving data which is important but
rarely accessed. I'm wondering if there is a way to specify in the
console which files we would like sent to tape without going into the
director configuration file and making a new FileSet every time.

This is what I have in the config file:

JobDefs {
  Name = ArchiveDefs
  Storage = LTO-3
  Pool = Default
  Type = Backup
  Messages = Standard
  Level = Full
}

# Archiving template, to be changed by console program
Job {
  Name = ArchiveJob
  SpoolData = no
  JobDefs = ArchiveDefs
  Priority = 12
  Client = media-fd
  FileSet = empty
}

FileSet {
  Name = empty
  Include { Options { signature = MD5 } }
}
FileSet {
  Name = L0007
  Include {
Options { signature = MD5 }
File = /home/big/L0007
  }
}

And then I can go in to the console, run the job, and modify the job to
use the L0007 fileset instead of the empty one. But I will have to make
a new fileset every time I wish to archive different files -- I would
much prefer it if there were a way to just edit the path. Is this possible?

We are very happy with bacula for our nightly data backups and would
like also to use it for this project, but it seems a bit awkward. Any
thoughts?

thanks so much,
mike

On Sat, 2006-11-04 at 13:46 +0100, Kern Sibbald wrote:
 Hello, 1 November 2006

 This contents of this email is for discussion on the Bacula email
 list, but not yet a topic for publication.

 As you are probably aware, I am planning certain reorganizations
 of the Bacula project for a number of reasons. Two of the
 objectives that I have are to make the project less dependent
 on one person (me) and to ensure that the source code remains
 Free Software forever. These two objectives involve the
 creation of a Bacula entity (an Association or a Foundation),
 and the transfer of the copyright from myself to some entity.

 The purpose of this email is to give you, the Bacula users,
 advanced notice of what I think is the best path for the
 copyright transfer so that you can provide your feedback
 on it prior to my final decision. Currently, the timing is
 to send you this email as soon as possible then to make
 the final decision on the 15th of November with implementation
 before the end of the month.

 Several months ago, I met with Georg Greve, the President of
 the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). I learned that
 he was in the process of creating the FSFE Freedom Task Force
 to work with projects that would like to enter into a fiduciary
 license agreement with the FSFE with the objective to offload
 the adminstrative (legal) needs of the project to the FSFE
 while keeping the project adminstration unchanged. The
 Freedom Task Force has been in operation since the beginning
 of October with Shane Coughlan heading it up.

 Probably the best explaination of their policy as it relates to
 Bacula is described in the FSFE Fiduciary Licensing Policy,
 which I have attached to this email in pdf format.

 A short summary of what I am proposing is:
 1. Transfer the Bacula copyright to the FSFE.
 2. There will be no change in the license, which is defined
in the LICENSE file -- only the copyright holder will
be changed.
 3. FSFE will look after the legal matters of maintaining and,
if necessary, defending the license.
 4. Aside from the copyright assignments for important
contributions, there will be no other changes to the
project resulting from the copyright transfer.
 5. The final transfer of the copyright will occur on or
shortly after the 15th of November and will apply to the
next released version.
 6. The official announcement of the formation of the FSFE
Freedom Task Force, and that Bacula will particpate
in their Fiduciary Licensing will be made at the end
of November.

 My belief is that this copyright transfer will be beneficial
 to the project in many respects: assure that the source
 remains Free Software, ensure that the source is not tied
 to any single person, off load most of the legal tasks,
 ...

 If any of you have concerns, comments, or questions, please
 do not hesitate to voice them now, either on the Bacula email
 lists or directly to me. I will take all comments
 and concerns into consideration and attempt to answer all the
 questions. Since I am on vacation and my Internet access is
 very limited, some or all my responses may be delayed until
 after my return on the 10th of November.

 Until the official FSFE announcement, I request that you keep
 this information (FSFE Freedom Task Force, Bacula participation)
 confidential to this list.

 Best regards,

 Kern

[Bacula-users] Support Tape Drive

2006-11-08 Thread Colby Silver
I didn't find anything specific to my setup so I'm sending it here.
Sorry if it's the wrong place.

This drive has worked great for a number backup/restores and happily
passed the btape test.

Debian Linux (2.6.18-3)
Adaptec SCSI 19160 PCI (part #: 1822100)
Quantum DLT-V4 Tape Drive (part #: BHBAX-BR)

If you'd like other info on the setup let me know.

[Bacula-users] Director cannot start, can't connect to MySQL

2006-11-08 Thread Brad Peterson
I've ran through the manual on the installion,

is working well.

I'm having troubles when I run:

Now, when I type:

It works without any problems, and I get a mysql

Any ideas on how to fix the above error message?

 I used the RPMs for FC5 and PostgreSQL. The problems seem to relate to
 not being able to connect to PostgreSQL, which is running, so Bacula
 Director does not start.

 Is anyone else using this combination, RPMs and PostreSQL? Should I rip
 it all out and start over? If so, should I switch to MySQL instead?
 Should I install from source? (The docs cover that option a lot more

 issue?

[Bacula-users] Problems with accentuation in windows

2006-11-08 Thread Diego Rozzini Pires
Hi!!

I start using Bacula a few days ago. I don't have any problem using
it and I'm really happy with it.

But a few days I needed to add to include one folder to a FileSet
for one of my Windows Server. The name of the folder is: cotação. The
full is: e:/Util/cotação. But, when de job run, I got error:

08-Nov 16:17 zen-srv7-fd:  Could not stat e:/Util/cotação: ERR=O sistema
não pode encontrar o arquivo especificado.

(Trying to translate: The system couldn't find the file)

But, that is the director and the full path.

Other files and directories with accentuions that was inside other
folders, i don't have problems, that files are backuped and recovered
without any errors.

I tought that was a problem with configuration in LANG in my system,
but making tests, i could create and read any file with accentuation.
I'm usind LANG=pt_BR.ISO8859-1, my kernel has built-in suport
iso-8859-1 and module support for nls_cp850 and i do a modprobe in it in
every boot.

Bacula Version: 1.38.9
O.S. Gentoo kernel 2.6.17

(sorry for my poor english)

Subject: [Bacula-users] Backup Method with Multiple Media Types - AIT2 Issue

  Hi All

Many Thanks to everybody who helped out on the multiple media types and
correctly scheduling the Full and Differential backups for me. The schedule
and media switch works now, but...

Something is wrong with my Sony AIT2 tape device (or tapes) itself - see log
below.
I've checked Google for ERR-Invalid argument, and have since used my
Cleaning Tape a number of times on the drive and also tried a few new blank
tapes on the device.

This might not be directly a Bacula issue as I am getting the same errors
with btape/test and tar commands.

Here is my tar test commands and responses:
[@ bacula]# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
[@ bacula]# tar cvf /dev/nst0 .
./
./mtx-changer
./grant_mysql_privileges
./grant_bacula_privileges
./bacula-sd.conf
tar: /dev/nst0: Cannot write: Invalid argument
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now [@ bacula]# mt -f /dev/nst0
rewind [@ bacula]# tar tvf /dev/nst0
tar: /dev/nst0: Cannot read: Invalid argument
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now [@ bacula]# mt -f /dev/nst0
rewind

Here is my btape SonyAIT test results:
*test
...
08-Nov 09:21 btape: btape Error: block.c:552 Write error at 0:0 on device
/dev/nst0. ERR=Invalid argument.
08-Nov 09:21 btape: btape Error: Backspace record at EOT failed.
ERR=Input/output error
btape: btape.c:782 Error writing block to device.
*quit

Can anybody help me out on this please? Is my tape device itself faulty or
not compatable? Or are there other configurations that I need to make
first?

Scott, I hope you don't mind but I'm taking this back to the list, I
really would like as many folks looking at this as possible, and if we
figure it out the solution should end up in the list archive.

In bacula-dir.conf is the declaration
   dbname = bacula; user = bacula; password = ""

Ah, OK, so your main PostgreSQL user is called postgres. I think the
Director's problem is related to the problem you get with

psql -U bacula -d bacula

Check your pg_hba.conf file. It probably lists "ident sameuser" as the
"method" and you'll need to change this to something else. You can use
"trust" if you don't care about security.

You've nailed it. The working part of the pg_hba.conf starts with this:

# "local" is for Unix domain socket connections only
# local all all ident sameuser
local all all trust

Note that the commented line with "ident sameuser" was the original,
the copy that uses "trust" was active after the edit and a restart of
the PostgreSQL service, at which point bacula-dir started up instantly.
For whoever is creating the RPMs, note that other than some messing
around trying to work around this, everything in this mess was exactly
out of the box, I didn't change a thing before the problem started. It
seems to me that the users, databases, tables, and passwords that are
created by the RPM install should simply work to start with, although
perhaps with a security

Depends on your definition of in use. If the system has the file locked for
writing, you'll have to enable VSS to get a backup of it while it's write
locked. If the application has it open read-only, you'll get a good backup
either way.

On the flip side, I've been using VSS to back up Windows workstations for a
few months now with no problems, and all files are able to be backed up no
matter how they're opened.

[Bacula-users] Software compression question

2006-11-08 Thread Ryan Novosielski
 From the manual:

---
Bacula also has compression code, which is normally used only when
backing up to file Volumes. There are two conditions for this software
to become enabled.

   1. You must have the zip development libraries loaded on your system
  when building Bacula and Bacula must find this library, normally *
  /usr/lib/libz.a*. On RedHat systems, this library is provided by
  the * zlib-devel* rpm.

  If the library is found by Bacula during the *./configure* it will
  be mentioned in the *config.out* line by:

   ZLIB support:  yes

   2. You must add the *compression=gzip* option on your Include
  statement in the Director's configuration file.

---

Well, apparently this isn't true, because I do not have compression=gzip
anywhere in any of my config files, yet I see that my reports say that
compression is enabled on some of my machines (typically about 22%
compressed). Can this be enabled by a configure flag or something like
this? Does 'compression=none' turn it off? I want to be able to decide
whether it's on or off, and currently I can't see any way to set this
other than 1 through 9 in the config files.

I'm running 1.38.x.

 I know I have not really contributed much to this list, but I am not

 this working. Please assist me if you have any ideas, and then as soon

It worked. :)

I installed Robert's 1.39.27 beta on a Windows 2k server, touched

signatures were on. The sparse option was enabled, and compression
was at GZIP6. That has been a long time coming, but it is finally
working.
