The USB micro (the only power option on a BBGW) plugged into a Certified
Data 4-port powered USB hub:

http://www.londondrugs.com/certified-data-usb-3.0-4-port-hub---hy-hb-8517/L8469843.html

I've successfully installed and configured about 20 BBB and BBG devices
using this USB hub for power. But this is my first (and only) BBGW.

Do you have a usb serial adapter?

For "flashing" you are looking for the cylon pattern..

[beagleboard] flashing lights and failed installation on BBGW

2016-08-10 Thread Stephane Charette
Trying to install BBGW-blank-debian-8.5-seeed-iot-armhf-2016-08-07-4gb.img
onto a new BBGW. Had problems, so I went out and bought a new micro SD
card and a new card reader just in case.

When I hold the boot button down as I plug in power, I get one of two
scenarios happening:

   - User LEDs #0 and 2 turn on, then lights 1 and 3 turn on, and back to
   #0 and 2, then 1 and 3. I've left it like that for over an hour thinking
   maybe that was a new pattern.
   - All 4 LEDs turn on, then off, then on again, at the same rate as the
   normal "heartbeat". So blink twice, then 1/2 second pause, and blink twice
   again.
   - User LED #0 (heartbeat) blinks maybe 3 or 4 times, then nothing else.
No other activity.

Is there a page where the blink patterns are explained? If not, does
someone know where in the code to look so I can find the different blink
patterns and their explanation?

Re: [beagleboard] BBB Battery shutdown

2016-08-10 Thread John Syne
Hi Bolek,

I’m traveling so I don’t have access to my development system. The code I was
referring to is V4.1 which will be different from the V3.8.13 kernel you are
using. To start with, you have to download the kernel source code and if you
are using an older kernel, you should use this repo:

https://github.com/RobertCNelson/yakbuild

Follow the instructions on how to build the kernel you need.

Next, you will find the kernel source code in the KERNEL folder.

In that folder, do the following:

git grep TPS65217_INT_ACI

That will list all the source files that reference this term.

My guess it would be something like drivers/mfd/tps65217.c

Doing a quick search, it looks like this gets added by a patch:

https://github.com/beagleboard/meta-beagleboard/blob/master/common-bsp/recipes-kernel/linux/linux-mainline-3.8/pmic/0001-tps65217-Enable-KEY_POWER-press-on-AC-loss-PWR_BUT.patch

This is the wrong repo, but there should be something similar in the /patches
folder.

I apologize for not giving you the exact links, but I am doing this mainly from
memory and a quick google search.

Regards,
John

ah, ok, I'll give that a shot.

It has in the past always been my understanding that dis-upgrade was for
upgrading to a new, or "different" Debian. e.g. Wheezy, or Jessie to
"testing", or "unstable", or in the most recent Wheezy to Jessie.

This is getting better in kernel's such as: 4.4.16-ti-r38

Where the kernel will try to reset the wl18xx and try to re-load the firmware.

But yeah, still working on this annoying bug...

The easy fix is to unplug let it sit for a few seconds and power it back up..

Everything is built in a Jessie sbuild, nothing is getting cross installed..

The issue, is with how apt's update works::

"apt-get update" updates packages when a new version is available.

BUT, if that version update grows a new dependency, then 'update'
locks that package version, till you run "apt-get dist-upgrade"...

There is a new example coming shortly..

ti wl18xx firmware package, used by the bbgw:

https://github.com/rcn-ee/repos/tree/master/bb-wl18xx-firmware/suite/jessie/debian

it's calling a ti tool "calibrator"

https://github.com/rcn-ee/repos/blob/master/bb-wl18xx-firmware/suite/jessie/debian/bb-wl18xx-wlan0#L51

I need to package this tool, as currently i'm building in the image builder:

https://github.com/RobertCNelson/omap-image-builder/blob/master/target/chroot/beagleboard.org-jessie.sh#L342-L352

when i finally package this "ti-calibrator", i'll add a dependicy to
bb-wl18xx-firmware's control file..

Then you'll have to:

sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Just, to update: bb-wl18xx-firmware

Ug, so we'd for all intents and purposes be installing sid of wheezy

Passed that, I think this is actually a stock debian arm package issue.

In the last month, we had two big transitions..

bb-doc-bone101-jekyll -> bone101
bb-bonescript-installer-beta -> bonescript

i know these where not pretty from the apt point of view:

But, this should have pulled things thru:

sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

bone101/bonescript got moved around and split up properly
(/var/lib/cloud9 /usr/share/bone101), and jekyll is no longer silently
running behind the scenes taking io/cpu cycles..

Then we've learned that "npm install xyz" is BAD, so no 'New" packages
do that, but there is still one old one i need to update to the new
method.. (haven't updated it since to keep that issue from poping up)

Re: [beagleboard] BBB Battery shutdown

2016-08-10 Thread William Hermans
My solution was easier i thought.

Uninstall acpid
william@beaglebone:~$ cat /proc/interrupts
   CPU0
 . . .
197:  1  INTC   7 Level tps65217
. . .

Then when a battery is connected to the board through the 4 test points,
and the board loses DC input, or the power button is cycles this file:

william@beaglebone:~$ cat /proc/irq/197/spurious
count 0
unhandled 0
last_unhandled 0 ms

count will increment.

However I've not yet tested this on a 3.8.x kernel. But at one point I did
have this working on a 4.x image. I have not tested recently however(
within the last few months ). At least one caveat that I can think of off
hand however. The irq number changes from system to system. So additional
string parsing would have to be done to find the actual file
programmatically. But not impossible.

I'd recommend just using a uSD card for more space. 8G and 16G class
10 (or faster) uSD cards are readily available and inexpensive. You
will spend far more time and effort trying to squeeze everything into
the 4G eMMC (at least when developing...once you figure out exactly
what you need the 4G eMMC might be fine).

In addition to Robert's stock Debian images, over at the Machinekit
we're also working with ROS, trying to get it integrated to our
hard-real-time motion control foundation. We're targeting the
BeagleBone and some SoC+FPGA platforms (both Altera and Xilinx), and
our base system is going to be built on top of RCN's Debian images
with ROS either installed from the Debian package stream or built from
source.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Debian Jessie (systemd 230 backport)

2016-08-10 Thread William Hermans
This has now been pushed to Jessie, i'm pretty happy with the v215 ->
v230 systemd improvements..

So, I've been noticing that apt-get upgrade has been braking existing
images( rendering APT virtually unusable). So when I say "virtually
unusable", I mean that APT is put into a state where it half installs
package dependencies , and can not figure out how to fix it's self. Passed
that, there is no clear way to fix the problem. So when I say this keep in
mind i have years of debian experience, and was not able to figure out in a
timely fashion ( a few hours ) how to fix this.

 Has this been resolved ?

Correct, it's a "built-in" kernel module, so if you want to modify it,
you'll have to rebuild the kernel..

Ok, so It seem I misunderstood what was being said. Using the existing
project, I do not know what all is possible. BUt I do know one could start
from scratch, or using parts of that existing project as a starting point
to craft their own "minimal" system.

ROS, is in the process of being integrated into debian:

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianScience/Robotics/ROS/Packages

I've backported most of the packages from unstable into our default
jessie repo..

Grab a jessie image from here:

and give it a goo...

Actually, I suppose BOM is not so important to me, with the way that I'm
thinking. But where i was going with this is that the BBG's come with 4 USB
ports already, so for one off designs it might behoove a hobbyist to just
buy a BBG. However, for a production system that needs to meet more than a
few 10's of boards, I can see where this could ideal. But then the question
would be does one really need HDMI, and whatever else the beagleobne black
offers over the green ?

So I suppose the question should be: What does this offer that one can not
achieve by using a BBG ?

Re: [beagleboard] BBB Battery shutdown

2016-08-10 Thread bmellero
Hello John,

I've read through this thread and am very interested in solving this
problem (with your help) and posting the solution if successful. My goal
is to switch to battery power without a shut down when AC power is removed.
Currently, the kernel treats the removal of AC power as if the power button
is pressed and a clean shut-down is issued. I'm using Mentorel's Beaglebone
uSomIQ
v4   which is a ruggedized
version of the BBB and have installed the 3.8.18-bone79 kernel and running
Debian 11.

Where can I find the code you posted that needs to be modified?
Specifically:

if (int_reg & TPS65217_INT_ACI) {
/* Handle AC power status change */
dev_dbg(tps->dev, "AC power status change\n");
/* Press KEY_POWER when AC not present */
input_report_key(tps->pwr_but, KEY_POWER,
~status_reg & TPS65217_STATUS_ACPWR);
input_sync(tps->pwr_but);
}

I do not see any "tps65217" source files. A find -name *tps65217* returns:

root@beaglebone:/# find -name *tps65217*
./usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.13-bone79/include/linux/mfd/tps65217.h

ps, the "iot" images are good fit for the BBGW, there was a couple
packages that Seeed wanted by default. That's why there are
"seeed-xyz" variants..

The BBB "ubuntu" image will support the BBGW wifi "eventually"...
There's one ti tool i still need to package into Debian Jessie (my
main rootfs target), then rebuild/port those wl18xx tools to 16.04..

(am i going to get that done this or next week, un-likely..)

[beagleboard] meaning of BeagleBone build names from RCN

2016-08-10 Thread Stephane Charette
Can someone help explain the name of various builds available on RCN's
site? I have a hard time guessing the meaning or difference between
builds. What I was looking for is a *Ubuntu 16.04* build that I can
install on my Seeed Studio *BBGW*, and which includes everything necessary
to use WIFI on the device.

For example take this build:

   - https://rcn-ee.com/rootfs/2016-06-09/flasher/
   *BBB-eMMC-flasher-ubuntu-16.04*-console-armhf-2016-06-09-2gb.img.xz

What I was hoping to find is something similar to this:

   - https://rcn-ee.com/rootfs/2016-xx-yy/flasher/
   *BBGW-eMMC-flasher-ubuntu-16.04*-console-armhf-2016-xx-yy-2gb.img.xz

But I did not find any Ubuntu builds that also had the letters "bbgw" in
the title. I did find several *Debian* builds with BBGW in the name, but I
don't know the difference between them. For example:

   - https://rcn-ee.com/rootfs/bb.org/testing/2016-08-05/seeed-gcp-iot/BBGW-
   blank-debian-8.5-seeed-gcp-iot-armhf-2016-08-05-4gb.img.xz  *("gcp"?)*
   - https://rcn-ee.com/rootfs/bb.org/testing/2016-08-07/seeed-iot/BBGW-
   blank-debian-8.5-seeed-iot-armhf-2016-08-07-4gb.img.xz  *("blank"?)*

Just some context for this. The Replicape is an awesome 3D printer cape,
and I originally designed this Hub because I wanted more USB ports to use
on my 3d printer with the Replicape.
SEE: http://www.thing-printer.com/product/replicape/

However, like my board, the Replicape pushes the envelope and is a bit
longer than a regular cape, further, the part that is longer contains these
nice pluggable terminal blocks, which have large through hole pins to deal
with the current requirements of the Replicape. My Hub extends directly
under this area of the Replicape. Its a nice match in one way because its
about the same length, BUT the tops of the USB A connectors are metal, so
if the pins of the pluggable terminal blocks short out on the tops of the
USB A connectors, well i am sure you can imagine the possible results.
However, it isn't really a big issue, putting a small shim to elevate the
board, or a barrier between the two neatly solves the problem, which is
what Jon is talking about. For a standard size cape this would not be an
issue.

http://imgur.com/eVW48in Here you can see the USB hub and replicape
together, I solved the problem by trimming the pins and using hot melt as
an insinuative layer.

Further my USB Hub is elevated from the BBB, by design, it lets me mount to
the mounting holes, reduces the overall length AND still allows cables to
connect underneath the BBB to the HDMI port, and easy access to the sdcard.

Bonus Picture: http://imgur.com/hjDOrX6

The fat red wire in that picture is SELF powering the BBB USB 4 hub,
tapping directly from the 5V power input on the BBB. A single wire is all
it takes (no extra external power supply for the hub). The GND return is
through the USB port on the BBB. This lets the hub easily drive a full
500ma on each USB port provided the power supply of the BBB is sufficient
for the task. Doing this is not required, if 500ma is enough, then just
plug in the hub and go, but if you want more power, this is a very easy and
neat mod to achieve it.

If your using Jessie, just use connmanctl:

##connman: WiFi
#
#sudo connmanctl
#connmanctl> tether wifi disable
#connmanctl> enable wifi
#connmanctl> scan wifi
#connmanctl> services
#connmanctl> agent on
#connmanctl> connect wifi_*_managed_psk
#connmanctl> quit

[beagleboard] How to configure wpa_supplicant.conf to get wifi work?

2016-08-10 Thread Mian Tang
Hi,

I'm using BeagleBone Black with Wifi dongle plugged-in (TL-WN722N), and
trying to configure BeagleBone black to get wifi work with my office's wifi
network. In general, username and password are necessary for my phone, but
it's more complicated to configure BeagleBone black. I did following:

(1) configure /etc/network/interfaces:
auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-driver wext
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

(2) configure /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ap_scan=1
network={
   ssid="officewave"
   proto=WPA2
   pairwise=CCMP
   group=CCMP
   key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
   eap=PEAP
   identity="myemailaddress"
   password="12345678"
}

And after that, I reboot and run the following command:
wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -iwlan0
-c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -f /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log

And got the error below:
wlan0: failed to initiate ap scan

I'm a beginner. Could anyone please tell me how to do with this issue, or
any suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

I2C_SLAVE_FORCE got the job done - thank you very much for the suggestion,

happy on the EEPROM.

Had to leave a much longer delay between writes than I'd expected, though.

 But the first problem is that ioctl (or the i2cdump utility) won't
 touch that address even for a read operation because it's in use by the
 kernel. That's the bit I'd like to get around.

2016-08-10 Thread Wally Bkg
My experience with apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade is generally poor if
you've not been keeping up to date nearly continuously.

I'd suggest getting another 8GB micro-SD card and installing the latest
image from beagleboard.org, or one of Robert's testing
images: http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian

Thanks, I am pleased with it so far. As for BOM cost... well I hand built the
first 6 boards myself and at that qty BOM cost is prohibitive.

Also the board is small, I know there will be an expectation its cheap. The
problem is that expectation is based on people being able to buy 4 port hubs
retail for $5. Buy a million of my hub and I can probably build them for that
too.

So BOM cost is an issue I'm working on. As is production cost. All of which
are difficult to solve at low volumes. That said I wouldn't announce this
board if I didn't have a plan to build it economically. So bear with me and
after I work out all the details I hope to announce a shipped price that is
acceptable to most.

A secondary consideration is being able to produce it at the same/similar price
for the forseable future. Thats also an issue for me. Too many projects are
single runs because they can not get enough volume for a 3rd or 4th batch. If
my plan works out that shouldn't be a problem for this board.

Re: [beagleboard] Trouble creating a BeagleBone Static IP

2016-08-10 Thread Davide Picchi
Lidia,
I think you got a corrupted file.

Install your SO again and follow what Robert says

Here the syntax:
*sudo connmanctl config  --ipv4 manual
 --nameservers *

run:

debian@beaglebone:~$ connmanctl services
*AO Wiredethernet_74daea0a4b52_cable

sudo connmanctl config ethernet_74daea0a4b52_cable --ipv4
manual 30.0.0.39 255.0.0.0 30.0.0.1 --nameservers 8.8.8.8

You don't need to edit the file /etc/network/interfaces
Just run connmanctl as above.

Did you populate this board with the board eeprom? and what value did
you flash to it?

gnd the write protect and boot this image once, to flash the eeprom..

[beagleboard] Install Debian Jessie on a custom BB based system

2016-08-10 Thread koopawarrior
Hi !

I made a card which is the exact copy of the BBB architecture (same CPU,
same RAM chip, same power supply) but without HDMI and flash memory chips
(to meet size requirements).

I want to install Jessie on this system but the SD card don't boot (S2
pressed or not) with U-Boot. CCC appears without the SD card and disappears
when I plug it. Furthermore, when I try to boot an Angström distribution,
my card boot on, so I think there's no hardware issue.

I understood that the Angström image has SPL and U-Boot image on a FAT
partition. On boot, the am3358 find the SPL and can execute U-Boot. I don't
find any SPL file on the Jessie image so
I think that the am3358 on BB has his NAND flashed with SPL and don't need
any external SPL file (this is why Angstrom and Jessie boot on BB but only
Angstrom boot on my system).

Actually, I try to build a Jessie image according to this git
: https://github.com/beagleboard/image-builder with
--bbb-old-bootloader-in-emmc parameter (even if I'm not sure it'll embed
SPL).

Is there something wrong in my thinking ?
Must I find a way to flash the internal NAND (U-Boot says that there's no
NAND device found..) ? or searching a way to include full U-Boot on a
Jessie image is a good way to solve my problem ?

Thanks

Elie

Re: [beagleboard] BBB custom USB 4 Port Hub Expansion (NEW DESIGN)

2016-08-10 Thread goeland86
For what it's worth, he sent me one of the early pre-production units - I
use it every day and it works with zero issues hooked up to my
Replicape+BBB 3d printer. I use the on-board power setup (proper USB
standard at 0.5A), and it works flawlessly with a USB wifi dongle and
webcam connected. I've had no brownout or power issues with it, and I have
been very pleased with it.

What's the saying? "The best products just work and you don't notice them
because they're never a problem"? That pretty much sums up my experience.
It's near perfect - my unit was mildly fussy about how I installed it
because of the cape's power pins etc possibly causing a short so I needed
to tape and hot-glue some metallic surfaces to avoid magic smoke escaping,
but that was a pre-production unit :)

As far as I could tell from my last conversation with Steven, BOM cost is
dependent on the size of the production run - unit price goes down the more
you make...

 No serial logs on Minicom?

 50/50, it's a minicom configuration issue, try again with gtkterm..

 If it doesn't work with gtkterm, then it's likely you didn't install

2016-08-10 Thread William Hermans
Since you only got a uboot prompt I'll assume you missed one, or both
uEnv.txt files.

2016-08-10 Thread William Hermans
does /media/rootfs/boot/uEnv.txt contain:

uname_r=${kernel_version}

?

For that matter you never mention if you have a first stage uEnv.xt file (
/uEnv.txt ). Granted this assumes redoing form a blank rootfs. But if this
is not a blank rootfs then your step #3 should not be necessry.
