t wanted to add that I was attempting to help with the problem in
the IRC support channel. I was unable to get Acrobat Reader to start as
well. Actually, I just now created a /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5 symlink to
libstdc++.so.6 - Reader will now start. I guess one of the Reader

You probably already know this, but for those who don't... ldd is your
friend.

Dear all,
This is my first post to the list.
My install of Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 seemed to go smoothly (from Adobe's
own tarball), as did copying the plug-in into Mozilla's directory. The
problem is that after briefly showing the splash screen, acroread
crashes without any output to t

To get the module PPLlite.api running, we use the
but I just started
using evince in combination with mozplugger
http://mozplugger.mozdev.org/ for Firefox. Their configuration file
already includes entries for evince. Still not as nice as a natively
written plugin, but it works pretty well, and now I have absolutely no
need for Acrobat Reader

Precompiled binaries often requires this library (Firefix do, for
example). I think the purpose is to have compatibility with older
systems.

I had the same problem, somebody in a forum gave me that hint.
Even thought with ldd this dependency is not shown, I think precompiled
software like reader is build with the most stable version of gcc.
I only use reader if xpdf is not able to display the file, btw.

Reader 7.0 needs libstdc++.so.5, if you compile gcc-3.3.x and
copy the library to /usr/lib it will work.
It might complain that api module PPKlite.api is not loaded,
to avoid this you can delete the module in
"/opt/AcrobatReader7.0.1/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins"
or what your path might be.

where is the problem ?
I am running Acrobat Reader7.0 on my LFS 6 system, kernel 2.6.13, without
problems. I did not compile AR, I just downloaded the binary
AdbRdr70_linux_enu.tar.gz. Or are you talking about a self compiled AR ?

Oops. Maybe I should read *all* the replies before I provide a

I gave up on acroread after one too many splash screens where I had to
click on a license agreement before every document. Now I use xpdf.

Install the poppler package first. I should have evince in the BLFS
book by perhaps this evening. Tomorrow at the latest.

Has anyone successfully installed acrobat reader 7 on their linuxfromscratch?
I tried, and when I run acroread I get the splash screen for a second
and it dissappears leaving nothing in it's wake, not even an error
message. On their web site in the support the only help is to ask if
