robert, Depends on the diameter, if its under 2 inches or so, then yoou can get cheap hole saw sets that fit a portable drill. Depending on the thickness you may have to go in from either side to get all the way through. If it's bigger than 2 inches or so, you might do it with a very heavy

Like Tom mentioned a set of hole saws can be gotten for under ten bucks. They are not the greatest but for occassional use they perform ok. They will barely penetrate a three quarters inch board and the pilot drill may not come all the way through on a inch and a half piece. Two choices use

Option 3 would be to simply use a 1/4 standard length drill bit, drill your pilot hole then follow up with the hole saw. Using this method you won't need to worry about locating the pilot hole on the reverse side of your board in the event the pilot bit on the hole saw didn't penetrate.
