I have generally (at least down here in NC) seen yearn as being used to
go one couple to the left. Generally, it's done *as a couple* where a
slice is done in long lines (and a double slice would do the same thing
as you said you had heard a yearn used for. In George Walker's dance,

The Charlotte, NC dance group had put a great floor down on concrete
that they built themselves. The floor itself is plywood, and it is
suspended about a half inch off the concrete by padded bumpers. Copying
Dean Snipes on this -- he was one of the main folks building the floor.

I have both versions, but a note that the Chain and then lines is the
original. The reasoning behind reversing them is that the long lines
gives you a chance to reorient before trying to do the chain on the
diagonal -- it makes it easier for newer dancers to orient to which way
is the left

Scott Higgs is going to be in the Triangle calling for the 3/9 TCD
contra dance and for a special 3/10 English Country Dance workshop (in

callers workshop for us while he's in town. The workshop will be

Having danced it, I definitely agree that it flows better with a gents
roll rather than ladies roll, but I don't know which of those was
actually the original.

Actually, it seems like that would make it more awkward... The gents
would have to get their right hand out from behind their neighbor to
allemande, plus a gents alle R into a swing (without a balance) is
generally somewhat awkward too (because you have to catch hands and then
get the hands
