FOY Â about a doz. chimney swifts (we call them cigars) but I think
they were migrating as none stayed over the girl's dorm of Union Springs
Academy where they roost in the tall chimney or have had nests in past
yrs.. I forgot to go back out before it got dark to see if any did go
down in

I had a lot of gratifying bird encounters around Ithaca on Tuesday
morning. Here are some highlights.
* The GREAT HORNED OWL mother and her two chicks still at their nest in the
center of the Newman Municipal Golf Course (5:50 AM). The chicks are now
about 4/5 the size of the mother, but are
On Sunday afternoon I was biking south along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail south
of the Farmers’ Market. The weather was chilly and cloudy, and the racing crews
were gone, so no people on boats or paddleboards were on the Inlet. An Osprey
was overhead. It did some confusing maneuvers before
I have to say, I LOVE seeing ospreys every morning on my drive to work. I
see them along the inlet and the hogs hole/Cass park area and it brightens
my morning so much!

This morning, a lovely pair of Purple Finches and a pair of Red Bellied
Woodpeckers were using our feeders along with Chipping Sparrows (and red
squirrels), when suddenly a White-crowned Sparrow appeared on the ground below.
No Tree Sparrows today. One at least was still here on Sunday.
