[cayugabirds-l] preliminary Ithaca CBC report
This is unofficial news from last night's Ithaca CBC compilation. I'll list the species which were reported. Please inform me of errors, as I am still tired. If you observe any species not on the list below within the count circle in on Jan 2, 3, or 4, it can be added to the total as a "count week" bird. If you observe any species not on the list below anywhere in the Cayuga Lake Basin any time in 2012 (and I know some already have been found, such as Snowy Owl, Tundra Swan, and American Wigeon) it can be added to the running total for 2012 for the basin, so also please post. Later I'll report on high counts, who gets credit for unique finds (*), what related info I still seek, and species which may be somewhere in the basin yet to be reported.--Dave NutterSNOW GOOSE*CACKLING GOOSE*CANADA GOOSEGADWALL*AMERICAN BLACK DUCK5MALLARDNORTHERN PINTAILGREEN-WINGED TEAL*CANVASBACK*REDHEAD*10RING-NECKED DUCK*GREATER SCAUP*LESSER SCAUP*SURF SCOTER*BUFFLEHEAD*15COMMON GOLDENEYEHOODED MERGANSERCOMMON MERGANSERRED-BREASTED MERGANSER*RUDDY DUCK*20RUFFED GROUSEWILD TURKEYRED-THROATED LOON*COMMON LOONPIED-BILLED GREBE*25HORNED GREBE*RED-NECKED GREBE*DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT*GREAT BLUE HERONTURKEY VULTURE30BALD EAGLENORTHERN HARRIERSHARP-SHINNED HAWKCOOPER'S HAWKNORTHERN GOSHAWK*35RED-TAILED HAWKROUGH-LEGGED HAWKAMERICAN KESTRELMERLINAMERICAN COOT40RING-BILLED GULLHERRING GULLICELAND GULL*GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLROCK PIGEON45MOURNING DOVEEASTERN SCREECH-OWLGREAT HORNED OWLBARRED OWLNORTHERN SAW-WHET-OWL*50BELTED KINGFISHERRED-BELLIED WOODPECKERYELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER*DOWNY WOODPECKERHAIRY WOODPECKER55NORTHERN FLICKERPILEATED WOODPECKERNORTHERN SHRIKEBLUE JAYAMERICAN CROW60FISH CROW*COMMON RAVENBLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEETUFTED TITMOUSERED-BREASTED NUTHATCH65WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHBROWN CREEPERCAROLINA WRENWINTER WRENGOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET70RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETEASTERN BLUEBIRDHERMIT THRUSHAMERICAN ROBINNORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD75EUROPEAN STARLINGCEDAR WAXWINGORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER*AMERICAN TREE SPARROWSONG SPARROW80SWAMP SPARROW*DARK-EYED JUNCONORTHERN CARDINALRED-WINGED BLACKBIRD*COMMON GRACKLE*85BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD*PURPLE FINCHHOUSE FINCHAMERICAN GOLDFINCHHOUSE SPARROW90 -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --
[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese
8:30 am . Several huge vees of SNOW GEESE flying from east to west over Lansing Station Rd (off NY Rt. 34B), over Cayuga Lake, and to the west. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Orange-cr. Warbler Ithaca Community Garden
Jessie and I were able to find the Orange-crowned Warbler before noon. When we saw it it was near the gray building by the CITGO to the southeast of the Farmers Market. This is directly across the railroad tracks from the Cornell Boathouse. It was not associating with any other species directly, but a couple juncos and a Song Sparrow were in the same area. [cayugabirds-l] revised preliminary Ithaca CBC, additions for basin
As Larry Hymes kindly pointed out, I inadvertently (he could have said incompetently) omitted WHITE-THROATED SPARROW from the Ithaca CBC list, so it now stands at 91 species. See the amended list below, on which I've also added some notes on unique finds. High counts were (I think): GREAT BLUE HERON tied at 20 TURKEY VULTURE at least 32 (presumably there was considerable duplication among the 116 reported)BALD EAGLE 3MERLIN 3 (a 4th was deemed possibly a duplicate)WINTER WREN 5HERMIT THRUSH 5 (although 1 was eaten by a Cooper's Hawk immediately after being counted)ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER 1 (first time on an Ithaca Christmas Bird Count) There were at least 3 species each added to the 2012 Basin list on 1 & 2 January, noted separately at the bottom. Keep letting me know of additions. We're also still looking for additional species for Count Week in the Ithaca area observed by Wednesday at the latest. Considering the way the weather has turned, HORNED LARK, SNOW BUNTING, and LAPLAND LONGSPUR might be worth looking for!--Dave NutterSNOW GOOSE* 17, single flock, unknown party or location, Area IX, Lansing CACKLING GOOSE* 5, Stewart Park, Ithaca, Ken Rosenberg CANADA GOOSE GADWALL* 2, Stewart Park, Dave Nutter, Stewart Park, from West Hill, Ithaca AMERICAN BLACK DUCK 5 MALLARD NORTHERN PINTAIL GREEN-WINGED TEAL* 1, relief channel by Wegmans, Ithaca, Ken Rosenberg CANVASBACK* 1, Stewart Park, Ithaca, Ken Rosenberg REDHEAD* 15, Stewart Park, Ithaca, Ken Rosenberg 10 RING-NECKED DUCK* 3, Stewart Park, Ithaca, Ken Rosenberg GREATER SCAUP* 1, Chris Wood, Hog Hole LESSER SCAUP* 8 Stewart Park, Ithaca, Ken Rosenberg SURF SCOTER* 1, East Shore Dr, Lansing,Tim Lenz BUFFLEHEAD* 2, Stewart Park, Ithaca, Ken Rosenberg 15 COMMON GOLDENEYE HOODED MERGANSER COMMON MERGANSER RED-BREASTED MERGANSER* 1 Ithaca/Ulysses? [cayugabirds-l] City Hall sharp-shinned hawk is back in hunting territory
In early December, we had several days of excellent sightings of the sharp-shinned hawk that has been hunting sparrows in the yew bushes on the east side of Ithaca City Hall. The bird disappeared for a few weeks, but was just sighted again. Stop by Autumn Leaves Used Books and check with Joe for updates. Last month, you could watch the hawk from about 5 feet away through a gap in the branches as it ate its meals. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Orange-cr. Warbler Ithaca Community Garden
I'm sorry for not posting the details on this bird earlier, but yesterday during the Ithaca CBC, I found a fairly bright ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in the Community Garden south of Farmer's Market in Ithaca. I flushed it initially with a flock of juncos from the south end of the garden on the east side of the entrance road -- the garden still is (was) pretty green with vegetable leaves and weeds. The bird sat up in the brush pile just south of the garden boundary, and then flew off to the south. Later in the afternoon, Tim Lenz relocated the warbler along the weedy edge of the field to the south of the garden, closer to the CITGO station. This was a first record for the long-running Ithaca CBC, but exactly the kind of bird I was hoping to find with the lingering warm weather and greenery. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Orange-cr. Warbler Ithaca Community Garden
I spent over an hour in and around the community gardens on Rt 13 this morning, accompanied some of the time by Dave Nutter and Paul Anderson. We did not re-find the Orange-crowned Warbler. Here's hoping that it took advantage of a calm evening and managed to escape south. In the area, though, I scared up a Carolina Wren, Northern Mockingbird, and Song Sparrow. [cayugabirds-l] East Hill Northern Shrike
This afternoon at about 1:00pm, while running errands on the last day of our holiday break, Diane and I spotted what looked like an Adult NORTHERN SHRIKE (no binocs) perched atop a small tree in the yard to the South of the HSBC Bank located at the Mitchell Street/Ellis Hollow Road and Judd Falls Road/Pine Tree Road light. This was immediately opposite the WVBR Radio Station at 957 Mitchell Street. The bird stayed atop that small tree for a few minutes, then flew to the NW about 50 yards to another small tree closer to the stand of White Pines at the back entrance to Rite Aid. After a few more minutes, the bird flew again to the NW to the more scrubby back lot to the NW of the Rite Aid building (near where the old Courtside Fitness Center parking used to be), which is where we left it when we had to get going. Maybe this bird will stick around the way some of the others have been doing. Good luck and good birding! Sincerely, Chris T-H -- Christopher T.
