RE: [cayugabirds-l] NO Red Phalarope - 4 to 7 p.m. Oct 10th.

2011-10-10 Thread William Roberts

I spent three hours (4:00 to 7:00 p.m.) tonight searching for the Red Phalarope
along the autoloop and I also did not see the phalarope. I did see the same
birds that Mike listed as well as a Northern Harrier and an American Bittern.
There were sparrows flitting about in the grass and bushes between the drive
and the marsh approximately three or four hundred yards from the sharp left
hand turn. It was too dark to make an id. Bill Roberts

[cayugabirds-l] Grebes

2011-10-10 Thread Mark Miller
After reading the post about possible red-necked grebes off Van Dyne Spoor Rd
(Savannah NY), I went out to check the area. All I could find was the usual
pied-billed grebes, coots, common gallinules, cormorants, and ring-billed
gulls. I spent about 20 minutes at the turn-around and didn't see much else.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked Grebes at Montezuma?

2011-10-10 Thread Scott Haber
I just noticed a post on Genessee Birds from last week regarding a pair of
possible Red-necked Grebes at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Road. I saw no
mention of them here, but wanted to check if anyone can confirm that report.

[cayugabirds-l] MWR Monday afternoon

2011-10-10 Thread Mark Miller
Just a few notes around Montezuma, the Greater White-fronted Goose and
Snow/Canada (Scanada?) Hybrid are still at the Main Pool. The hybrid flew out
with a flock about 8 AM, but returned around noon. Still no sign of the Red
Phalarope at Shorebird Flats (area between photo blind and sharp curve). An
Imm. BC Night-heron has been hanging out in the little drainage channel on the
west end of Benning Marsh (right side of auto route) just before the Thruway
section. The Avocet was still at Puddler's Marsh, near the northeast corner and
a few Great Egrets are still present. A lot (+500) Pintail were flying over
Tschache Pool in the 20-30 minutes while I was there. Also saw my first Ruddy
Ducks for the season in the Main Pool Saturday morning.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo on Plantations Road (Mundy)

2011-10-10 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,
I took my Mundy lunch walk. As I was just getting down from behind Nematode
Green houses, I saw large bird land into a basswood. After some time I could
locate it and could it was a cuckoo. After it moved to couple of hiding places,
I could finally make out that it was a Black-billed cuckoo. Then it flew to a
tree behind USDA green houses, when I could see it tail pattern.
Other than that a Common Merganser was in its usual location.

All the chipmunks and squirrels in Mindy were giving alarm call for ground
predator, first I thought it was due to my presence, then I saw a Coyote walk
across the fenced part of the Mundy, I felt good that I am inside the cage. I
was getting a little worried to walk the path. I kept watch for the coyote as
climbed the hill.
Other than that I counted 28 sulphur butterflies (Colias sp. mostly clouded
yellows) in one small patch, four Monarch butterflies, several Cabbage whites
and a Shadow Darner (Aeshna umbrosa). Nice beautiful day!

Yesterday when I was on Towpath road, here also I saw a quick glimpse of a
cuckoo when it flew along the channel, but could not get any details.

[cayugabirds-l] NO Red Phalarope - 10 Oct AM

2011-10-10 Thread Mike Powers
Hi Matt (and everyone),

I spent an hour (8:30 - 9:30) along the autoloop at Montezuma this
morning, much of the time looking for the phalarope in the area where
it was reported on Sunday (09 October). The only species I found
there were Greater Yellowlegs (2), Canada geese (16), Blue-winged Teal
(4), and a single Northern Shoveler.

Cheers,
Mike

RE: Re:[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma 9Oct11

2011-10-10 Thread Meena Haribal
To add to Jay's list along Towpath road

At Puddlers Marsh from Towpath Road, the AMERICAN AVOCET was foraging in the
deep water in the distance. We also heard several AMERICAN PIPITS and a late
flyover BOBOLINK. Migrants along the road included many Ruby-crowned Kinglets,
Yellow-rumped Warblers, Indigo Bunting, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW.

I saw lots of Palm Warblers and a Wilson's warbler in the flock.

No Red phalarope for me. May be it was just hiding among the grasses. Then at
one point I thought it was being seen at new "Muckrace" shorebird spot, as
there are too many new names for old locations and also I don't read the
details of locations sometimes.

On our way back near dusk we saw two SANDHILL CRANES fly across Rt. 89 just a
bit east of the north end of East Road to join a second pair of cranes a field
on the north side of the road.

I was at Mays Point when the Sandhill Cranes took from the pool and flew over
Jay et al on Rt 89.

The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was with the Canadas at the Visitor Center

underparts, brown Canada-like back and dark on flanks), but these birds had
disappeared an hour later. The RED PHALAROPE was foraging where others have
described. Other birds in the area included a PEREGRINE FALCON and a flyby
MERLIN.

In the afternoon I returned with Nick Sly, Hope Batcheller, and Graham
Montgomery. The phalarope was still in the same area, as was the avocet. At
Mays Point we saw 3 basic-plumage LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, the first I have seen
in a couple weeks, as well as two SANDHILL CRANES. After we finished at the
main complex, we headed up to Savannah. Van Dyne Spoor was quiet and Carncross
was still mostly unplowed corn. Martens Tract, with a walk through the field
between the two dikes producing two fairly cooperative NELSON'S SPARROWS. A
flock of about 15 Rusty Blackbirds and a bigger flock of several hundred Tree
Swallows was also present.

Now that my year of birding at Sapsucker Woods is over (contest), I'm looking
for people to birdwatch with to area hotspots and willing to share gas money or
do the driving.

I often have at least a couple week mornings or weekdays I'm not working
including this Wednesday. I have the BirdsEye app and GPS so it makes on the
fly detours to find notable birds easier.

Some night owl prowls may be fun too.

[cayugabirds-l] Campus glass collision inquiry

2011-10-10 Thread Scott Haber
Apologies in advance if this is ever-so-slightly off topic, but I don't
recall seeing any mention on the list of the new Human Ecology building on
campus, south of Beebe Lake. There are a couple of huge walls of glass, one
of which faces the south shore of Beebe, and another, the slope beneath Mann
Library, with many large trees in both locations that as most of you know,
can harbor a good assortment of migrants. I've done a few cursory checks for
dead birds on the patios beneath these glass walls in the evening, but
haven't turned anything up yet, although there seem to be plenty of marks on
the windows indicating bird strikes. It's possible that building staff (or
predators) have been removing bird carcasses before the end of the day.

Has anyone noticed any dead birds around the building, or know of any plans
to mitigate potential window-strikes with decals, etc.?

Thanks!
Scott

[cayugabirds-l] Nelson's at Hog Hole

2011-10-10 Thread bob mcguire
The Nelson's Sparrow was still present in Allan Treman Marine Park
this morning. I found it by following the mowed path out from the
parking lot - the left-hand path that leads along the woods on the
west. Once I got to the lake, I backtracked about 30m and headed
directly east, high-stepping through the grass until the sparrow
flushed. It flew to the ground, then slowly emerged to the top of the
grass where it could look around - and be seen! Note that it was not
in the goldenrod patch just to the west of the path - and not in the
grass of the area known as Hog Hole.

On another note, a stop at the Aurora boathouse yesterday to scan the
mirror-like lake surface yielded one Horned Grebe and two Common Loons.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park scaup

2011-10-10 Thread Brett Haranin
For anyone watching the continuing scaup at Stewart Park - he was close
enough to shore on Saturday morning to get a few pictures:

To me, he looks more like a Lesser in these photos...
