Hi all, there are currently at least thirty two WILSON'S SNIPE in a muddy
drainage stream behind the long red barn (south side) at the parking area
for Bluegrass Lane. The birds are only about a hundred feet away from the
road and the light is great for photography at this angle.

[cayugabirds-l] Freese Road Larks, Compost Glaucous

2014-03-06 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

After lunch today (at about 1:15), Tim Lenz and I had a group of between 30
and 50 HORNED LARKS in the field across from the Ithaca Community Gardens
on Freese Road. They seemed to be frequenting the patch that had truck
tracks all over it. Many of the birds were very dull and brown, appearing
pipit-like from a distance. They may move closer to Hanshaw later when the
farm crew is done spreading manure there.

We also had a pair of GLAUCOUS GULLS at the compost piles before that.

I was driving before, so I figured I'd wait until we stopped for ice cream

wouldn't hurt to wait a while.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak continues in NE Ithaca

2013-10-14 Thread Brad Walker
The bird is now on the west side of the road, in the north edge of the
southern corn field. It's been out in the open calling for several minutes.

The female BLUE GROSBEAK continues on gravel road section of Bluegrass

 ** **

I saw the bird today, 14 Oct 2013, at 12:58 pm, and had it in view about 6
minutes. It was in the same spot where it was originally found: in the
very SW corner of the corn east of the road, just north of the chain-link
 fence.

 ** **

I watched it forage in the corn along the edge for several minutes. It
once flew up and perched high on top of a corn stalk, but spent most of the
time about chest height in the leaves of corn. It eventually flew off to
the SW into the corn patch just west of the road, just north of the last
barn. It was calling consistently the whole time (which is how I found it).

 ** **

I had walked around those areas for a while before I found it. I suspect
the best strategy would be to sit at the NW corner of the fence and watch
that corner of corn. The bird seems to be coming back there, so sitting
and waiting might be best. Plenty of sparrows to keep your attention while
you wait (Song, Swamp, White-throated, White-crowned, House).

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma today evening!

2013-09-23 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

Sorry for the late reply. I was with Tim yesterday and we had all the birds
Meena mentioned at East road, plus the continuing WHIMBREL very close to
Towpath Road and a MERLIN chasing shorebirds around for a while. There was
also a (most likely) MOURNING WARBLER with some NASHVILLE WARBLERS on
Towpath. There wasn't anything really of note from elsewhere in the refuge
that we visited.

We also found all of the Egrets Meena was missing in the small wetland
across the street and down the road from the Audubon Center.

   Hi all,

As I had a transportation today, I decided to take a long drive to MNWR.

On the way I stopped at Myers nothing of interest to report. At Aurora, I
saw an adult Bald Eagle, which soared for sometime parallel to my car.
Again at Mud Lock I saw two adult Bald Eagles sitting on a dead tree and a
 few crows harassing them.

I took wildlife drive hoping for Soras and the alike. At Visitor Center
there were numerous Pectoral Sandpipers (20+), one White-rumped Sandpiper,
and one Greater Yellowlegs. In the Seneca River spillway, just at the
beginning of the drive there were two Lesser yellowlegs in lesser water and
two Greater Yellowlegs in deeper water.

On the main pool lot of duck activity was evident. Lots of Pintails and
American Widgeons were flying in the air. Tons of Green-winged teals were
clustered around the vegetation. La Rues, New Shorebird area and Bennings
were devoid of shorebirds, but Bennings had a few Shovlers along with other
 common species.

May's point Pool had lots of Ring-billed gulls and one Pied-billed Grebe.

At Knox Marsellus, there were lots of shorebirds most of them were
concentrated here rather than near the Towpath.

I quickly picked out 7 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, lots of Pectoral Sandpipers and
Golden Plovers (30+) and one Black-bellied Plover among them. Shorebirds
for no reasons were taking off in a group and land somewhere else. I think
this was pre-long distance take off exercise. May be many of them might
take off today. I wonder when they take off , at dusk? A cormorant had
caught a fish and it was being harassed by a Ring-billed Gull for quite
sometime. Later another Ring-billed Gull was chasing a Greater Yellowleg,
with something in its beak for quite sometime.

Two American Pelicans were sleeping, one bill tucked inside its feather
and the other with bill in the open.

I also saw a few Barn and lots of Tree Swallows over the water. A small
flock of Bobolink flew over the marsh. Otherwise it was comparatively
 quiet.

One thing of note was there were no Egrets anywhere in the refuge!

Also I had a rare sighting of Tim Lenz, who got out of the car with his
scope and scanned the Knox-Marsellus quickly in about 5 minutes and left!
He scanned the area where the Hudsonian Godwits were seen, so I presume he
was not interested in other birds or he might have birded the area
previously and came for a better look of some species!

 Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Northeast Ithaca and Sapsucker Woods

2013-05-22 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

There were a few migrants around on my walk today, but the highlight for me
was a very cooperative MOURNING WARBLER singing and foraging in the open
with a CANADA WARBLER and a MAGNOLIA WARBLER on the Future Road between
Sanctuary Drive and Salem Drive. The bird was on the north side of the
trail in the brush closer to Salem Drive.

Sapsucker Woods had a few migrants on the Wilson Trail including CANADA
WARBLER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, and ALDER FLYCATCHER,
the last of which was at the Sherwood Platform. Sapsucker Woods Road had a
WILSON'S WARBLER across the street from the Frog Barn and just to the north.

Other interesting sightings were a baby COMMON GRACKLE being fed by its
parents and a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER singing a disjointed song on the
peninsula.

They may stick around for a bit and be worth a look if you're passing

[cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Pine Siskins

2013-05-13 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

On my ride to the CLO today, I found a flock of about 100 PINE SISKINS
feeding just off of Salem Drive, immediately adjacent to Salem Park. The
birds were in the trees above a house with feeders still out and were
making a lot of noise. I came across a smaller group of about 10-12 birds a
few streets over lurking above another set of feeders.

Otherwise, not many migrants out on the ride to work. I did have an
Alder/Willow Flycatcher on the path between Salem Drive and Sanctuary
Drive. The bird didn't vocalize but was conspicuous for a bit. I had a
similar experience with a bird yesterday at the Sherwood Platform. It
called several times, but I don't have their single call notes down yet, so
I left it at Traill's.

Hi Donna, First is the where employees park (where handicapped parking is),
the second is the employee lot near the exit from the parking areas and the

I hope that clears it up! We're so used to having all the employees just

[cayugabirds-l] Sunset Park Migrants

2013-03-10 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

Tim Lenz and I watched migrants from Sunset Park today from about 10:30am-2pm.
We had about 45,000 CANADA GEESE in total with 7 CACKLING GEESE and 19 SNOW
GEESE mixed in. Towards the end of the count, Tim spotted a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE landing at the Swan Pen with two Canada Geese. This is most
likely the same bird that Jay later saw at Stewart Park. (We went to Stewart
Park at about 4 and had the Greater White-fronted Goose for about 20 minutes
before it mysteriously disappeared. None of the 5 or so people present could
re-find it after about a 5 minute gap).

At Sunset Park we also had TUNDRA SWANS and NORTHER PINTAILS migrating withe
Canada Geese. There were also raptors moving through including 2 SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 3 NORTHERN HARRIER, 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 3
GOLDEN-EAGLES.

Here's the link for the full list:

Re: [cayugabirds-l] short-eared owls @ Morgan Road

2013-03-09 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

After these first few owls flew by the buildings on Morgan Road (they didn't
come out until about 5:45), Scott Haber, Susan Newman and I decided to head
down to the distant birds near Carncross Road, where we could see birds
fighting with each other and perching from afar.

When we arrived at Carncross Road, we found a close bird flying by over the
newly constructed bridge, headed back towards Morgan Road. (This may have been
the bird that Colleen saw at about the same time). We also had a distant bird
near the treeline to the Northeast and a very close and cooperative bird
hunting back and forth over the berm just to the north of the road, for a total
of 6 birds in the immediate area. Such beautiful birds!!

distinctive bark of hunting owls. The remnant of 6 birders quickly relocated
and were treated to an up close fly-by and several minutes of watching two

Many thanks to my husband for his last look and listen, which alerted us to

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lots of redpolls

2013-02-03 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

I've been working in the skinning lab since last September and most of the
birds we work on (I believe) have been dropped off at the front desk at the Lab
of Ornithology. You can put them in a ziploc bag with the following info on a
piece of paper:

Species
Date found
Location Found
How the bird died (if known)
Your name

I'm not sure what the protocol is if you're going to go to the lab, but this
should work in most cases.

We can't lay claim to a flock of 200. More like a private party of 6. One
is pale halfway up the back and noticeably fatter but it also appears to be
puffed up, perhaps like Laura's. I could not see under the rump. The flanks
appeared to have light striping and the face profile did not appear dished,
so I have to go with Common R.

On another unsatisfactory note, there was a dead redpoll under the feeders
this a.m. The cleanliness gods are telling me some housekeeping may be in
  order.

BTW, I have seen only one report here of an increase in the Junco yard
count. We have had 10 to 12 consistently for the past 2 months. That is
twice our count from previous winters. Have others seen higher counts than
  normal?

We have a flock of around 200 Redpolls at our feeders thus morning, maybe
  more.
They are very active, flying up every couple of minutes, then raining back
down to the feeders and the ground. I've noted at least one that appears to

And one possible Hoary, but it does not sit still long enough to be sure,

[cayugabirds-l] Lab of O Cackling Goose

Hi all,

There is currently what appears to be a CACKLING GOOSE (small, rounded
head; short, almost stubby bill, smaller than all the CANG) swimming around
near the small island in the front pond at the Lab of Ornithology.

I took a video with my phone through one of the scopes to check again and
will share that with anyone that wants to see it when I have it online.

If you're interested in coming to look for it, the geese all usually fly
away in the next half hour or so.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Road migrants, 9/28

2012-09-28 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

There was a nice collection of migrants on my walk to work this morning
from Salem Drive to the lab. See eBird links for full reports.

I cut through Future Road (a trail connecting Salem to Sapsucker Woods
Road) and, on the way, heard my first-of-fall PINE SISKIN.

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11675495

Future Road had a nice assortment of migrants, with the highlight being a
pair of WINTER WRENS hopping about together, one of which was singing a
whisper-song.

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11675528

Sapsucker Woods Road produced two new life Lab birds for me: a pair of
low-flying CASPIAN TERNS and a very cooperative YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO near
the Frog Barn. Other groups of the usual suspects were found in clusters
all the way down the road.

[cayugabirds-l] KENTUCKY WARBLER at Sapsucker Woods

2012-08-28 Thread Brad Walker
Chris Wood and David Bell found a KENTUCKY WARBLER at the Sherwood Platform
a few minutes ago. I stumbled upon them right after and we relocated it on
the far side of the tiny pond just east of the platform. It was loosely
associating with a warbler flock and was staying closer to the ground. We
haven't resighted it for about ten minutes. The flock was headed towards
route thirteen.

[cayugabirds-l] Curlew Sandpiper...No

2012-07-25 Thread Brad Walker
Jay McGowan and I searched for the Curlew Sandpiper at Knox Marsellus for
quite a while this morning without success. The light was bad from East
Road and the birds were distant from Towpath. It could easily still be
there, but we were unable to find it.

The Wilson's Phalarope was still present below the parking area in East
Road.

Other sandpipers included: stilt, pectoral, semipalmated, least, spotted,
solitary and short-billed dowitcher.

After a discussion about Cape May Warblers I decided to stop at the
Ithaca City Cemetary to check the tall spruces. I didn't get that far.
Just below the Stewart Ave. entrance there's a short road that goes off
sharply to the north and over that road and up toward Stewart Ave. stands a
white pine with its top 20' dead and sere. I saw a lump near the top that
turned out to be a MERLIN with its back to me, either grooming or picking
at some food. After a minute of watching it, it dive bombed a cardinal and
then flew to the south into another white pine. I refound it perched near
a dense packing of sticks that might be a nest. To find the putative nest
tree find the bench with the short flagpole on the left of the main road
where it bends sharply to the right. Stand across the road (on the north
side) at the bend and sight to the left of the flagpole looking SSE. There
are several pines up there just 50 yards or so below Stewart AVe. The bird
and nest (or collection of sticks) was in the left-most tree maybe 20-25'
from its top. Merlins have been reported thereabouts perennially but this
the first one I've found there.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Lincoln's Sparrows (and other migrants)

2012-05-10 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

I came across two LINCOLN'S SPARROWS on my walk around Sapsucker Woods
today. The first was in the weedy area between Timmy's Walk (near the front
feeders) and the road. It hopped up several times and was also seen by Jay
McGowan and Livia Santana. The second was on the inner path of the Wilson
Trail, just on the other side of the feeders. Other highlights included:

calling Rusty Blackbird
Great Crested Flycatcher
Ovenbird
Magnolia Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler
Palm Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
Alder Flycatcher (spotted by Jay this morning. I found it hanging out near
the Wilson Trail bridge giving pip calls)
a brown Hairy Woodpecker (I couldn't tell if this bird is stained or
naturally brown, but it's been hanging out near the front feeders all week.)
and what appeared to be a Northern Waterthrush on a nest (I'm going to
check back on this spot to see if the bird is there this weekend.)

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Meadowlark

2012-03-07 Thread Brad Walker
Tim Lenz and I were at Stewart park between 8:30 and 9 this morning and
found it almost completely devoid of waterfowl. There were a few birds of
note, though, including:

Green-winged Teal (pair)
Killdeer
Eastern Meadowlark (This bird flew in low from the lake and came in
directly above us giving a few calls before continuing to the south.)

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Canada Geese migrating

2012-02-27 Thread Brad Walker
Tim Lenz and I spent half and hour walking around Sapsucker Woods. We had
about 7000 Canada Geese pass overhead in all. We found three CACKLING GEESE
among them. One lone bird as soon as we stepped out of the building, in a
low group of about 50 birds, and a pair in a group of about 125 birds.

There weren't many land birds to speak of, but there were 4 Red-winged
Blackbirds at the feeders and a Red-tailed Hawk that swooped towards us and
kept following us around the trails.

  I
am estimating we saw several hundred thousand at a minimum. They covered
the sky. As far as we could look both east and west, at any time there
 were
10-20 large flocks visible with optics. Also 15 PINTAILS, 15 SWANS, 10-12
KILLDEER, thousands of BLACKBIRDS, 3 CACKLING GOOSE candidates. Oddly, no
hawks or eagles--one each local RED-TAIL and TV. Had to quit--neck cramps.

that he saw a dead cormorant:

I walked the eastern part of the Stewart Park shore and found a washed up
cormorant that seemed much smaller up close than I would've thought.

I didn't see any cormorants during the first half of the week, and I
thought perhaps there were none here, but today while walking at Treman
Marine Park I saw a living immature DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT resting on the
substructure of one of the docks in the marina. Were there 2 all along? Is
this a new arrival? Was the carcass something else?

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe

2012-02-17 Thread Brad Walker
To elaborate more on the grebe's position: Tim and I were looking from the
Swan Pen at Stewart Park when I spotted the grebe this morning. From
Stewart Park, if you look to the northeast along the east shore, you'll see
a squat, yellow shed near a break in the trees where the road is visible.
The grebe was swimming around there looking back and forth. For the last
five minutes we were there, the grebe was swimming alongside a Red-throated
Loon for a great comparison.

Also present was a gorgeous adult male CANVASBACK, in the canal next to the
boathouse. I've never seen one so close.
