[cayugabirds-l] FOY Baltimore Oriole
An hour ago I heard the unmistakable sound of the "i am here now" male who appeared to be waiting for food where I always provide it. [cayugabirds-l] YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
This evening a friend and I watched from my porch a YBS going back and forth between the peanut and suet feeders. When I first saw it, I went on All About Birds and also brought out the Crossley Guide for us to more clearly see the striking difference between this bird and a Downy or Hairy. I saw a YBS here last summer, but it did not stay around long. The bird this evening liked the "upside down suet feeder." I have been away for over a week, and am sure my return disappointed the EASTERN PHOEBE already sitting eggs in her porch light nest (side porch). I will figure out a different route to the clothesline. [cayugabirds-l] YBSA
My summer feeders do not include suet, so I have been surprised this past week at the appearance of a male Yellow Bellied Sapsucker at the peanut feeder. It came by itself for a few days, but last evening at around 8 PM I saw two. One sat on the top of the pole, and the male repeatedly took peanut pieces to it. I assumed it was feeding a female, but the red parch was lacking and I decided on juvenile instead. The male has returned several times today, but usually by itself. It must enjoy those unsalted peanuts. A Tufted Titmouse came to feed yesterday, a bird I have not had at the feeders in recent weeks. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] SNOW BUNTINGS, HORNED LARKS, displaying MALLARDS
At the favored location of the corner of Mahaney and Genoa/Lansing Town Line Rds earlier this afternoon, friends and I enjoyed "snowstorms" of swooping, banking and ground-feeding SNOW BUNTINGS. There were hundreds of them traveling around to their choice spots on the farm. There was also an abundance of HORNED LARKS. We remained in the car using our binoculars (no scope), but even "naked eye" viewing in the winter sunlight yielded stunning aerial antics and bright contrasts of color in the Buntings themselves as well as the contrast of white birds on dark manure spreads. At Myers Private Marina we watched several male MALLARDS displaying for the females. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] SHORT-EARED OWLS
Inspired by Donna's report of Rick's owl sightings on Scofield Road, and (perhaps) by the PBS Nature Show on Owls, a friend and I returned for the third time this Winter in hopes of an owl display. We arrived at 5:40, when there was still plenty of sun, and our first SHORT-EARED OWL swooped toward us from the field on the east of the road, prompting Sue to comment, "I was just face to face with an owl!" It was not long before two others were also swooping across the field, and one settled into the Sumac bush (east side, not far from the northern end of the road) giving us amazing views (what an array of colors on the bird) for several minutes. We watched them as they flew, swooped, (sometimes) landed on the ground, then perched on different bushes in the area, including two near the buildings. We were there for a little over half an hour, and had at least two owls in view the whole time. Someone in another car said she had just seen another on a telephone pole where Buck Road and Van Ostrand intersect. Venus and the Crescent Moon on the drive back were a bonus. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] EASTERN PHOEBE
About a week and a half ago, during one of several swings I made up Cayuga Vista Drive looking for the Northern Shrike, I saw a bird in the hedgerow that dropped down as soon as I got my binoculars up. I had observed a dark head, light chest. I waited for it to appear again, but it did not. I returned later in the day but did not see it. Last week, I saw the bird when I did not have binoculars with me. (What kind of birder am I, huh?) It was in the same area as it had been. Two days ago, I posted the Northern Shrike and again saw the mystery bird with the flycatcher head and coloring of a phoebe. I checked eBird, and decided it was too early for an appearance in our area. This afternoon, Sue Henne (an experienced birder) emailed me that she had just seen an EASTERN PHOEBE on Cayuga Vista Drive. I called her immediately, and she said there was no doubt, since she had been quite close to the bird, and even observed the tail-flicking. With the "backup" of her identification, I am now comfortable to report to that a week and a half ago and again two days ago, I saw an EASTERN PHOEBE on Cayuga Vista Drive. Sue and I drove there right after we talked, and while the phoebe made no appearance, two RED-TAILED HAWKS were busy hunting and a flock of seven AMERICAN ROBINS perched in a tree. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] NORTHERN SHRIKE
Seen at 3:30 this afternoon at the end of Cayuga Vista Drive where there will be a new development - I walked the lane (cannot drive in there). The NORTHERN SHRIKE flew in front of me, then landed in the field. I got some fine views as it stayed still a few moments, then moved about in the dry grass before it took off again, flying low into the hedgerow. [cayugabirds-l] GODWIT and more
Marianne L. and I watched the HUDSONIAN GODWIT moving around at Benning Marsh (11 a.m.) - handsome with the chestnut color showing in the sunlight. On Vandyne Spoor Road, we heard an ORCHARD ORIOLE singing just at the edge of the woods before it opens up into the marshy area. Two other audio treats: AMERICAN BITTERN and (whinnying of) a SORA. [cayugabirds-l] Armitage PROTHONOTARIES and CERULEANS
Having seen the posts about the Armitage Road PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, Marianne Ludwigsen and I pursued the bird this morning around 11. A male gave us great views, including one on a low stump in front of us. He moved across the road to the top of a sign, then to a post on another where he appeared to be eating something on the back of that sign. He went to the back of a third sign where another PROTHONOTARY joined him. They disappeared together. The CERULEANS were in top vocal form, but we did not see any. Other birders at the spot told us that an S.U. professor had earlier pulled in with a caravan of cars. Twenty students were told there would be extra credit if they could find the PROTHONOTARY. They spotted it almost immediately, since the bird was right there beside the road. One wonders just how many got the credit. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Myers, Harris Park, MWR
At Myers this morning, at 9:30, Marianne Ludwigsen and I saw a lone NORTHERN PINTAIL. It left soon after we arrived. In Cayuga, from a distance, we thought we saw a swan, but a drive down into Harris Park revealed a SNOW GOOSE swimming close to shore. We were concerned with the way it held one of its wings. We returned over an hour later, and it was not there. Also at Harris Park we had a closeup view of a ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW giving us a trifecta with earlier tree and barn swallows. There was an abundance of BLUE-WINGED TEALS and many GREEN-WINGED TEALS at Montezuma. On the loop at the shorebird end, a pair of CASPIAN TERNS entertained us for a long time with a feeding ritual (one waited while the other went off and returned with food). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] HARLEQUIN DUCK
Using Steve Fast's directions from six days ago, I arrived near Long Branch Park this afternoon at 2:00. I did make one change; I pulled into the parking area to the right just before the stop light for the one-lane bridge. With help from another birder who pointed out which of the two Mallard groups the Harlequin was in, I saw the duck with several Mallards and one Black Duck hanging out near the abutment. [cayugabirds-l] mnemonic
Although this attention to "mnemonic detail" may not be helpful to some people, I think it is worth sharing. I was not lucky enough to hear the CANADA WARBLER posted by Mark this morning, but on the trail did hear Mark mention a beginning sound I now realize I missed. I listened to sounds again upon returning home, and, having found that missing syllable, think that either one of these mnemonics could be helpful: "I'm too too busy now to watch tv." (All About Birds) or "I'm too busy now to watch tv." (Thayer Birding Program). I know that in the field we are not going to be lucky enough to count those syllables, but learning the syllabic counts can be fun, and the gist of this might just work for somebody who is too too busy bird watching to watch tv.
