Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Lake East Side, Montezuma Visitor's Center and Summerhill Today
Just a note that Ethan Kistler and I relocated Dave's POSSIBLE JAEGER SP. at Cayuga Lake SP sometime after noon. We were looking for the Gannet of course when I spotted a flash of white in what appeared to be the outer primaries of a bird coming up the far side of the lake. We followed the bird for a while and at one point it looked like a gull was chasing it. However, it soon blended back into thermal dreamland and was never seen again. It was truly a miserable day to be scoping the lake and I can't believe so many awesome birds were found today! The best we could come up with were single RED-NECKED GREBES at Cayuga Lake SP and Sheldrake (where we tried and failed to intercept the Sabine's Gull). [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Yesterday--Cerulean, Canada Warblers, Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Although I imagine I'll look back on this summer as the "summer I spent looking for the Curlew Sandpiper" I'll try to post some other birds from yesterday's visit to Montezuma. At Towpath Rd. I heard BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, VEERY, and a singing YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. A SORA was walking around underneath the cattails. The wildlife drive held little of interest save seventeen LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL at the visitor center. Martens Tract now has algae mats that support small numbers of peeps. If you walk east past the pond to there is a dried up bog with a good mix of ducks and shorebirds. The highlight here for me was my first Cayuga County SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER. A chickadee flock on Van Dyne Spoor Rd. had a male CERULEAN WARBLER and the first fall record (in eBird) of CANADA WARBLER for Wayne County. An evening visit to Towpath turned up many of the same birds as in the morning, the most exciting addition a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO that glided past and posed cooperatively for photos and video. http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/7865726560/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/7865565036/lightbox/ eBird Checklists: Towpath: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11436974 Visitor Center: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11437321 Marten's Tract: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11438004 Van Dyne Spoor Rd: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11438297 -- Tim Lenz t...@cornell.edu Web Applications Developer Cornell Lab of Ornithology -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Lesser Black-backed Gulls (5!); Bufflehead and Pine Warbler videos
Last Friday 3/16 there was also a good movement of Lesser Black-backed Gulls through Stewart Park. See here for photos and eBird checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S10188525 Thinking that this influx might become a regular occurrence, I checked the meager gull flocks more often in the following evenings without finding any other Lessers. In fact, I barely found any gulls at all. There weren't any sightings reported to eBird of Lesser black-backed Gull at Stewart Park between 3/16 (group of 3 birds and hybrid) and yesterday 3/25 (5 birds). Yesterday I saw an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL moving up the lake at Taughannock SP and a pair of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS among 94 COMMON MERGANSERS from East Rd. at Montezuma. [cayugabirds-l] Weekend Birding--Golden Eagle, Lapland Longspur, Northern Shrike, Screech-Owls, etc.

The highlight was a GOLDEN EAGLE on Sunday in the town of Ledyard http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9710625 On Saturday we encountered an enormous flock of SNOW GEESE in Ovid and also had a flyover LAPLAND LONGSPUR. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9707843 Missing the Snowy Owl here, we wandered over to the west shore of Seneca Lake to try (unsuccessfully) for the bird that has been reported there recently. A massive Aythya flock close to shore in good light at Perry Pt. was rather enjoyable to watch: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9703252 At the south end of Seneca Lake, we found a LONG-TAILED DUCK http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9705613 On Sunday we ended up encountering three different EASTERN SCREECH OWLS--known birds on Sweazy Rd and Union Springs, and a (new ?) bird south of Aurora that Brad spotted in a hole in a tree as we were driving by. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9710728 http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9711837 This morning, Brad and I heard and saw two COMMON RAVENS flying west high over the Swan Pen at Stewart Park. [cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Shorebirds, Eagle photos
Hi, This morning at Stewart Park I heard several BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS flying high overhead. Just now (10:22PM) I heard a GREATER YELLOWLEGS flying over the Ithaca commons. Perhaps many of the remaining shorebirds at Montezuma will be clearing out with this front. After terrorizing the now rather large AMERICAN COOT flock at Stewart Park, an adult BALD EAGLE eventually managed to catch one and fly off with it. I was lucky enough to capture this event with pictures if anyone is interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/sets/72157627860761859/show/ Good birding -- Tim Lenz t...@cornell.edu Web Applications Developer Cornell Lab of Ornithology -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Stilt Sandpiper, Egrets, Night-Herons, Ruddy Duck, Turnstone, etc.
Hi, I stopped by Stewart Park this evening at 7:00 to see what else might be around. The highlight was a juvenile STILT SANDPIPER actively foraging with a LEAST SANDPIPER next to the dock. It must be the same bird I reported this morning as a Pectoral although that bird was highly lethargic and center-weighted in its foraging motions--more like a Dowitcher. Other somewhat notable birds included a RUDDY DUCK, the GREATERLESSER SCAUP, the continuing RUDDY TURNSTONE on the white jetty, two GREAT EGRETS flying in at 7:33, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER on the golf course, my first COMMON MERGANSER offshore since early July, and at least two very vocal immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS around the swan pen. Full species list and comments below: Stewart Park, Tompkins, US-NY Mar 25, 2011 8:43 AM - 9:30 AM Protocol: Traveling 0.5 mile(s) Comments: Overcast, cold N wind, good visibility partial choppiness 43 species Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) 40 Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) 6 Gadwall (Anas strepera) 3 American Wigeon (Anas americana) 8 Offshore with other ducks; later I found a group of four birds on the ice in Fall Creek. Two truculent males were attempting to mount an unwilling female as the third male stood aside. I reached for my camera in the backseat and started taking pictures of the ensuing drama. All of a sudden a Red-tailed Hawk came to the rescue of the poor female as it landed on a male wigeon, who just barely escaped with his life! See http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/tags/wigeon/show/ for a slideshow of all the action. American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) 2 Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) 40 Green-winged Teal (American) (Anas crecca carolinensis) 4 Canvasback (Aythya valisineria) 1 male Redhead (Aythya americana) 20 Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) 175 Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) 2 Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) 60 Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) 22 Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) 1 male Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) 4 Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) 12 Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) 14 Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) 1 *FOY; descended into Jetty Woods from the south but later flew away again. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Surf Scoter & Tree Swallows, rumors of Black Scoter & Eurasian Wigeons
Hi all, I've posted a photo of the Black Scoter in Canoga here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/5544385845/ <http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/5544385845/>Was certainly surprised to see it; but now I'm disappointed that I didn't see the Surf Scoter, which has been a tougher bird for me in recent years. Other highlights from yesterday were the adult NORTHERN SHRIKE at the Railroad Rd. Marsh, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at both Tschache Pool and Dean's Cove (the latter vocalizing!), and a PEREGRINE FALCON in the snag overlooking Fall Creek at Stewart Park. [cayugabirds-l] ROSS'S GOOSE in field at corner of Game Farm Rd. and Rt. 366
Hi, As I was driving up Game Farm Rd towards Rt. 366 this afternoon (~12:10PM) I noticed about 125 Snow Geese in the field north of the pheasant pens on the right side of the road. It didn't take much scoping through the flock before I came across an adult ROSS'S GOOSE. It's pretty rare to see them on the ground in Tompkins County (this is my first time) so I'd go for it if you get a chance. Game Farm and Compost Pile, Tompkins, US-NY Mar 13, 2011 12:10 PM - 12:30 PM 5 species Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens) 125 Ross's Goose (Chen rossii) 1 **Rare; adult. Very small white goose with black wingtips, thick neck, and tiny dark-based pyramid-shaped bill. Seemed more active and alert than many of the other Snow Geese. It was walking around a lot and once even leapt into the air and flapped its wings. I took some photos but the bird was a bit too far to capture well with my lens. [cayugabirds-l] Sunday Cayuga Lake Birding
Hi, This afternoon I went up the west side of Cayuga Lake and circled around eastward to Union Springs before it got dark. Three LONG-TAILED DUCKS and a pair of AMERICAN WIGEON were about the only birds of note at Sheldrake. There's now open water at Mud Lock, which is hosting three TRUMPETER SWANS and many TUNDRA SWANS. Hello, I've posted some photos of Redpolls at http://picasaweb.google.com/tclenz/CommonRedpolls# <http://picasaweb.google.com/tclenz/CommonRedpolls#>The bird I identified outside my office window this morning as a Hoary was very frosty overall and had solidly white undertail coverts. I'm not sure I ever photographed the same bird (camera wasn't initially readily available), but you can see individuals in these photos with very limited flank streaking and only a single streak on the undertail coverts. Make of them what you will. [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park White-winged Scoters
Hello, This morning I had my first WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS of the fall at Stewart Park. It's interesting to compare frequency of scoter reports in eBird for the Cayuga Basin: *http://tinyurl.com/2epvdbd* The eBird data (under the frequency tab) show that Surf Scoter is most often seen early in the fall (Sep-Oct); Black Scoter is the most frequently reported in mid-fall (Nov), and White-winged Scoter appears in late fall and remains the most frequently observed scoter until early spring. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park
There has also been a WINTER WREN hanging out at the swan pen the last two mornings. Yesterday this sprightly little ball of pent-up joy was bouncing around the east side of the pen, occasionally dropping to the grass to forage. This morning it chattered loudly in response to a second Winter Wren that was calling from the jetty woods. I also saw the adult BALD EAGLE back on its snag this morning, for the first time since November 5th. [cayugabirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing, Sapsucker Woods
Hi, As I was walking in today I heard and then saw a BOHEMIAN WAXWING above the north feeders with a small group of six Cedar Waxwings. I pounded on Tom Schulenberg's window but shortly after he was able to see the bird the bird flew away with the rest of the waxwings across the pond. Hopefully the bird is still in the area somewhere. Fortunately I was able to snap a quick photo before my camera died: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seabamirum/5139899214/ -- Tim Lenz t...@cornell.edu Web Applications Developer Cornell Lab of Ornithology -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Hi all, Indeed I was stunned to see 17 CATTLE EGRETS flying low over the inlet directly towards me when all of a sudden they veered westward and circled up high over the golf course. I ran back to my car and was able to take a few photos before they disappeared out of view. [cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe at Stewart Park
This evening there was a basic plumaged EARED GREBE swimming out near the red lighthouse jetty visible from Stewart Park. The most noticeable thing about the bird was its very steep forehead and distinctly triangular head shape, with the peak just above and perhaps slightly in front of the eye. The black on the crown extended downwards below and behind the eye, wrapping around diffusely to the back of the neck. Its back and flanks were black, with little contrast. The bill seemed rather short and thin, but it was bit too far away to notice any other details. It was swimming near a Pied-billed Grebe at one point but later drifted away on its own towards the pilings. I was able to take some video using my phone through the scope, which I will post to my flickr page tomorrow if it reveals anything useful. Hopefully the bird will stick around overnight. This was my first Eared Grebe for Tompkins County so I imagine it would be a new county bird for many others as well. [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Sat. AM--Baird's Sandpiper
Hi, Nancy Chen, Chris Dalton, Alberto Lopez and I went birding in the Montezuma area this morning. The highlight of the morning turned up after Chris and Alberto went home---an adult BAIRD'S SANDPIPER seen from Towpath Rd. The bird was a diffuse warm brown on the head and breast; and clearly larger and longer-bodied than the Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers also present. Other shorebirds included hundreds of LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a few PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, DOWITCHERS, WILSON'S SNIPE, and about a dozen STILT SANDPIPERS. An adult breeding-plumage Bonaparte's Gull on the mudflats was beautiful but not unexpected; they turn up in small numbers every year in late summer. In fact, we were somewhat surprised not to see any during a quick stop at Sheldrake on the way home. Initially all we could see was a fully black-hooded head emerging from behind the vegetation; with wide white eye crescents. The bill was straight and thin; a deep red with a black ring near the tip. At rest, the primaries were black with very large white spots. The wing pattern was even more striking in flight, reminiscent of Slaty-backed Gull in that the black markings were bordered by a significant amount of white at both the tips of the primaries and the tongues. At certain angles a beautiful pink wash was evident over the bird's breast. The bird flew away unexpectedly at 1:15, rising to just above the treetops, over the lighthouse and around the corner towards Ladoga Pt.
