[cayugabirds-l] "raven"--the rest of the story
Several people immediately offered help in retrieving the “raven” reported from the Enfield area. We were organizing capture, but after I got back from Binghamton around 630 pm, I called the homeowner, who went out to find that it was now dead. This morning Nancy Cusmano very kindly retrieved the body for a hand-over downtown—and yes, it was NOT A RAVEN, it was an American crow, an adult, very unlikely to have been hit by a car and thus a good West Nile Virus candidate. It was reported to have “dropped from the sky”, similar to what people told me back in 2002-2006, when I was doing surveilance for Broome County. The crow will be tested for WNV. Be aware that West Nile has already killed some of our crows in the Cayuga Heights areas and is of course widespread, if not intense. Avoid dusk biting mosquitoes and please dump those warm, stagnant bird baths and buckets from last week’s rain! Thanks to all who called or emailed. I really appreciated the offers. [cayugabirds-l] Raven needs help--near Trumansberg
I just got a message via Suzanne Broderick that there is a raven down and acting “dazed” in a yard on Enfield Center Rd West, near Trumansberg. I am currently finishing my day at Binghamton University and unable to get there in any reasonable time to try to capture and take to Wildlife Clinic. If anyone is in Trumansberg area to help or could go there to grab bird, I have the yard owner’s name and phone number—just call my cell phone below. Large towel for capture and cat carrier will probably be necessary. Not sure how dazed it is. Be aware—it could be West Nile virus since this is active and killing our crows in Ithaca these past few weeks. Sadly! I can give advice here if you call. Thanks to anyone who can help. [cayugabirds-l] Raven with nest material
I saw a bird doing some soaring, which distracted my attention from driving because it seemed unusual, as if it were in display. As I identified it as a raven flying south across Rt. 79 about 0.4 miles west of intersection with Flatiron Rd at ~11, Monday, 12 Feb., I was able to see that it had a bunch of straw-colored stuff in its beak. Pretty sure it must be nest building somewhere near intersection of Speed Hill and Buffalo Rd. (Alright, why is it called Speed Hill and why is the other called Buffalo?) [cayugabirds-l] Raven forager--Freese x Hanshaw fields
I encountered a Common Raven alighting and foraging in the wettest spot in the NE corner of the field at Freese x Hanshaw (a spot just SW of the corner signs). The nearest pair of crows was quite upset at this, diving at it, but it didn’t even look at them while landing. It captured something quite frog-like, used its feet in some way to carry it up and transfer the prey to its bill, and flew off East down Hanshaw. It got out of sight before I could see where it went beyond old Ludgate Farms. Quite possibly the same one/pair that I have encountered foraging along Hanshaw just a bit north of 13. But after that, where??? Could there be a raven nest fairly close to Sapsucker Woods? Also, for those keeping track of raptors: a) for the 3rd time since Thursday, a Broadwing Hawk was circling overhead in the vicinity of the DeWitt Middle School playing fields; b) a Merlin pair is back on Christopher Lane area since early last week and as of today, appears to have successfully harrased our oldest female crow (19 years old) off her nest and established their access to the nest. [cayugabirds-l] Raven correction and update
Yesterday, 26 March, I reported watching a raven sitting beside a yard at junction of Neimi Road and Hanshaw Road. (I also spelled Neimi incorrectly). Actually it was on the S side of intersection of ETNA and Hanshaw, where there are actually houses. Today, 27 March, at about 11 am, just barely S of yesterday’s perch, a raven was at the side of Hanshaw, eating a roadkill. Is it in residence near there? [cayugabirds-l] Raven gets friendly?-and Crow 9U
As I was coming back to Freeville via Hanshaw Road (13 to West Dryden Road), there was a Raven just sitting in a tree along the road, basically in the front yard of the house or two on the W side of Hanshaw, just before getting to Niemi Road. Two crows came out from W of the house to call at the raven, which just sat comfortably. I pulled into Niemi Road to get a few photos, just to document the event of seeing a raven sitting calmly so close to a house. And speaking of the stretch between Etna and Niemi Roads, we have a disperser crow, a young 3 year old female tagged with green tags, black letters 9U. Last year she moved from her natal area between Hanshaw and Cardinal lane, apparently finding a mate and territory between Etna and Niemi Roads. The pair are often to be seen on one side of Hanshaw or the other. BUT now that nesting is upon us, they have been hanging out E of Hanshaw, a little less than halfway from Etna to Niemi, at the N edge of the first big pasture/marsh open area after passing Etna Road going N. I would LOVE to find her nest and will be trying to watch the pair. But it isn’t going to be easy. Their territory seems to go far E and W. If anyone gets some information from them (a direct flight to near a conifer farther east, for instance?), an off-list email would be much appreciated. [cayugabirds-l] Raven in West Freeville
A crow was chasing a loudly objecting Raven over what used to be a field to the west of my house on Wood Road. There are still (so far) enough open areas that Meadowlarks still occur but I never get to watch Northern Harriers hunting there anymore. This is the second time in less than two weeks I've seen and heard a Raven being harassed in the area. The first incidence was on Neimi Road partway between the two farm houses, past the experimental ponds, and the bend where it becomes Mohawk Road. That time they were flying roughly north. This time the crow let the Raven continue west into the distance. [cayugabirds-l] Raven and goat
While I was doing chores this morning (outside of Mecklenburg) I saw a wonderful interaction between a raven and my goat. I feed the crows, and it's not uncommon for our resident ravens to drop in and have a snack. This morning, as I was filling water buckets, I heard an odd, bell-like voice. It was a raven, sitting on the hayfeeder in the ram/goat pen, about 100' away. My big goat was standing with his front feet on the feeder, reaching up as far as he could, so that his nose was almost touching the raven. The raven was facing him, ruffling up his neck feathers, and gently pumping his wings - not opening them up all the way, just lifting them rhythmically up and down, a few inches away from his sides. He was vocalizing quietly - repeating a single, beautiful, metallic syllable. I watched them for several minutes - the goat fascinated, trying to touch the raven, the raven, just out of reach, talking to him. Then the crows arrived, and the raven flew off. -Liz -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Raven courtship
Spring around our house includes Raven courtship. I heard and saw a pair of ravens flying from _south _of Rt 79 over Goetchius Preserve and up Hammond Hill and across to Robinson Hollow ( from a field you can see and hear them from a large distance away). The entire time they flew very close to each other with twists and turns, even occasionally seeming to bump into each other, giving croaks, and the bell-like sound, which I love, and other sounds that carry for more than a mile. I've seen this performance other times and interpret it as raven love. After watching them fly for well over a mile, I have no idea where their this pair might nest. The snow is melting, and the Great Lakes ice cover has receded from nearly 90% to 77%. I got to believe that spring is coming. Fwd: [cayugabirds-l] Raven inquiry
Clara, I also wondered how detailed you wanted Raven stories to be. I often take my dog walking in the woods up by the overlooks at Taughannock and Ravens nest in that gorge. One of my delights is hearing them calling to each other as they fly along the river. One day one was stationary in a tree and doing many different calls, all Raven sounding but with the variability of crows with lots of vocalizations. Another time I was walking along the edge and a Raven flew below me and I realized how huge they are. According to some numbers I have read they are close to a Red-tailed Hawk size. And then another day I was driving back down rt 89 and an crow was in furious pursuit of a Raven (they will mob and chase them the same way they do hawks) and they were both kind of flying diving straight at me and the contrast in size and power was so evident. The Crow was about half the size and looked puny. When you hear them in the sky you immediately seize on that as a magic moment. Nice talking to you this morning. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Raven inquiry
Clara, I was a wildlife science major at Cornell from 1968-1972. I spent much time outside birding, hunting, fishing and taking courses all over the southern tier of upstate NY. I do not recall seeing a raven anywhere in the southern tier during my tenure at Cornell. I probably saw or heard ravens in the Adirondacks but do not affirmatively remember. I spent my career working as a fish and wildlife biologist consulting to the utility industry, for the most part. As an aside, the company I worked for initially, Ichthyological Associates, Inc. (and ultimately retired from a successor to IA), was started by Dr. Edward C. Raney, who mostly hired his students to staff projects around the eastern US. Many, many years later, in the fall of 2004, I was on a project at a proposed wind power site near Hornby NY, about half way between Corning and Watkins Glen. We had been hired to monitor raptor, songbird and waterfowl migration as part of the permitting and impact assessment process for a utility scale wind energy project. I spent many days looking at a mostly empty field where the monitoring site was located. I recall that I did not see a single migrating raptor during many days of observation. However I did observe resident red-tailed hawks, northern harriers and common ravens on a daily basis. One day I was watching an adult harrier coursing over the fields hunting. I was enjoying the harrier show when a single raven showed up and took up an aerial position behind and slightly higher than the harrier. The raven mimicked every move that the harrier made until the harrier turned over in the air and struck at the raven with its talons. The raven hopped up in the air, dropped back a few feet as the harrier righted itself and continued flying low over the field. As soon as the harrier resumed hunting, the raven resumed its mimicking flight until again the harrier struck at the raven. This process continued for about 20 min. I could usually see the birds naked eye but I also had binoculars and a scope. I watched in amazement as the aerial show went on for about 20 minutes. Finally the raven moved off and the harrier flew to another field. I speculated then, and now, as to why the raven mimicked the harrier. Was it planning to steal a mouse from the harrier? Was it simply demonstrating its flying prowess to the harrier and itself? Was it playing? I like to believe that the behavior was play with the potential benefit of a stolen meal. One thing for certain is that the raven was every bit as light in the air and accomplished a flyer as was the harrier. And we all know that harriers appear magical in the way that they soar, flutter, kite and drop to the ground on wings a buoyant as a helium-filled balloon. Rob Blye Robert W. [cayugabirds-l] Raven in my yard croaking
Hi all, There is raven on one of my spruces and croaking merrily! Yesterday in the afternoon, I was looking out of my living room window, when a male GOLDFINCH came and sat on my yew about 3 feet from window. It seemed it was literally shivering. It sat there for a minute or so shivering. Then a female passed by. He soon followed her. After this I went to my backyard door to see what had caused the goldfinch to be so fearful. On the foot step of my backyard door there was woodchuck frozen and intently listening to something. I did not want to disturb the woodchuck, so I waited for the woodchuck to relax. After sometime it seemed relaxed and went on its way feeding. I slowly opened the door to see if I hear anything else. I heard both chickadees and robins both in still alarm mode. So I suspect a hawk in my yard like the other day. It must have chased the goldfinch and that is why it was terrified and escaped but still shivering with fear:-( Beautiful male seemed as an easy target for the hawk? I have seen a single COMMON RAVEN in that area a couple of times recently, once flying north low alongside Pine Tree Rd by the Oxley Equestrian center at dawn, and once later in the day in the field opposite the end of Snyder Hill Rd stretching down to the East Ithaca Recreationway. I'm curious whether it's a young unmated bird or whether it's foraging while its mate tends a nest somewhere in the neighborhood. Today morning, I was working in the garden around 7.30 am. I just looked up to find a raven circling and after a bit of circling it headed northwards! Other interesting notes are, Tufted titmouse and Black-capped Chickadees have their fledglings along with them these days and BCCHs are very protective of their babies! I have found that now I have two pairs of Catbirds coming to my yard. The pair from my yard has become so very bold that they daily in the mornings scold me for scaring away the beautiful moths from my moth sheet. One of the catbird, I think she a female based on her calls and behaviors, would just sit two to three feet away from me and keep chucking and gurgling at me, as if it to tell dont'... dont scare that big moth, I want it . I can converse with them. They talk back to me and refuse to budge away from the sheet. Imagine catbirds doing that! You can see the beautiful moths, which I have been denying being food to baby catbirds at this link. http://picasaweb.google.com/ithmoths/June2010MothsMeenaSHouse# Later at some point I will post the chucking calls of catbirds and them running over my gutter looking for moths. A pair of Kestrels, seem to be giving hard time to Vet School Red-tailed Hawks, sometime they chase them long distance away. I guess kestrels have fledglings are around near by. On Saturday, I watched one of the male Kestrel carry a mouse in its talon towards the Vet School. Past Saturday, I paddled E. Tioughnioga river from Cuyler to East Homer. Highlights were - one adult Bald Eagle, several pairs of Kingfishers (may be 10+ individuals), several pairs of Spotted Sandpipers (10+), three females of Common Mergansers with various sized babies, Cedar Waxwings (many), Eastern Kingbirds, Warbling Vireos, two Yellow-throated Vireos and tons of Barn and Tree Swallows, many rough-winged swallows, a few Baltimore Orioles, Yellow Warblers, Common Yellowthroats and I guess something more which I am forgetting now. Only two species of odonates - two dark females of Enallagma sp., and one male Ebony Jewel wing. I also saw my first two monarchs of the year. Happy Summer! [cayugabirds-l] raven, others
Yesterday in the early afternoon I saw a RAVEN in our field poking through the long grass looking for a meal. IT reminded me that last Friday I heard a RAVEN call. I looked out towards the lake in hopes of seeing a raven fly-by, which happens occasionally. Our place is about halfway between the gorges of Taughhannock Creek and Trumansburg Creek and ravens seem to like the steep terrain. I saw nothing on the horizon but then realized the bird was only 40 feet from the house in the nearest big tree. Shirley had thrown out some stale bread and the raven was scavenging. On the west coast, ravens can be pretty bold, but this is the first time I have seen one so close to our house. Within minutes, a Turkey Vulture swooped low over the same tree, and I began to think there was something dead nearby. I have not yet discovered any remains, but such a meal might attract a Raven too. Saw 3 Grackles this a.m. in the same tree. They are the first of the year here.
