Birders can find this fine car placard among the New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III materials. During the 2000 Atlas I made up something like this for my own car while surveying far from home, and I can testify that it’s an effective ice-breaker. Just print it, slip it in a clear plastic sleeve and put it in your car window whenever you get out to do some birding (and remember to submit your observations to the Atlas). https://s3.amazonaws.com/is-ebird-wordpress-prod-s3/wp-content/uploads/sites/79/2019/11/VehiclePlacard.pdf >> On Mar 19, 2020, at 5:51 PM, Donna Lee Scott wrote: > I have been thinking of getting magnetic removable signs for my car's sides > and back that say "BIRD WATCHER". -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
RE: [cayugabirds-l] Ithaca airport Meadowlarks / with a warning
Sheriff's deputies have long been vigilant about birders and especially photographers around the airport fence, in both tense and more relaxed times. Twice over the past 20 years, starting at least a few years after 9/11, sheriff's deputies have pulled me over along Snyder Road, asked me what I was doing, and then cheerfully sent me on my way. Once the deputy explained that officers were watching me from the sheriff's building along Warren Road, then decided to send someone out when they saw me taking photos [of Vesper Sparrows]. I recall that Deputy Anderson specifically told me to pull my car all the way off the road when stopping to bird. I don't remember specific instructions about not taking photos. Still, since then I have made a point of not taking photos through the fence. I figure that if I ever find a Snowy Owl or something like that, I can always call the sheriff's office to explain first. Also, I do make a point of calling ahead if I lead groups along Snyder Road, as I sometimes do for the CBC on January 1. Anyway, after that first incident, I sent a letter with my photos to Deputy Anderson, explaining why the Vesper Sparrows, as well as woodcocks and other airport birds, are special. He was glad to receive the letter. So I have always thought that the sheriff's office is striking a reasonable balance in ensuring airport security while still being friendly and respectful to me as a birder. I do see that six squad cars is a whole different level of response. Maybe it is somehow because the officers are more wary in these troubled times. But given my past experience, I would guess that it's more likely a case of Magnus having companions, and then maybe a backup request getting out to a few on-duty officers at once. I should add that they weren't so bad. Sure, it was annoying, but maybe I can see them sitting in their office --with *nothing* to do?!-- and then seeing four people getting out and walking up to their fence on the other side! Also, the lead agent gave me his card and said we could call him: Josh Nalley, Airport deputy director of operations/Fire chief Ithaca-Tompkins Regional Airport, 72 Brown Road, Ithaca NY 14850 607 266 2641 Email: jnal...@tompkins-co.org But maybe the more important thing we can do, as the Cauyga Bird Club perhaps, is to regularly ask the airport to delay the cutting of the grass until the meadowlark chicks have fledged? RE:[cayugabirds-l] Ithaca airport Meadowlarks / with a warning
ps. For undisturbed views of meadowlarks, I have a suggestion. There is a beautiful area along West Covert rd on the other side of the lake, part of the Finger Lakes NF, with plenty of meadowlarks (and later in Spring, bobolinks). Some of the best sightings I had of singing meadowlarks were in the fields north of W Covert, close to the intersection with "Lodi Covert Townline" rd. "West Covert Rd" is a dirt road with many potholes, 4 wheel drive is best. Clark and Lodi Covert Townline rd. are better paved. You can find it on the map here, https://ebird.org/checklist/S45339734 Both meadowlarks and bobolinks are plentiful around this area, though some fields get cut early so they're killed off. Not along W Covert, though, I don't think they do that there. Yrs. Magnus Fiskesjö n...@cornell.edu From: Marie P.
