I have gone back to check some tracks in the leak-damaged area and I am
having some difficulty verifying the connections to one of the chips.
Does anyone have one of these machines, preferably working, that could help
me to check a few connections?

I have reached another impasse in my attempts to get my DECstation 220 to
work. I have posted the details on my blog here:

If anyone has any suggestions I would be interested to hear them.

I am trying to repair my DECstation 220 after a battery leak, and making

Hello Everyone,
As I have mentioned before I have made some progress on a DECstation 220,
but I have reached an impasse. I get some signals on the data bus which I am
not sure about. They look odd, but they could be normal, I just don't know.
I took a picture of the scope trace, which is here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292195584646
The TURBOchannel extender I got has a bit of rust and quite a lot of dark
pitting on the steel surfaces. I am not sure what the finish is, whether it
is anodized or galvanized. In any case, does anyone have recommendations for
how to remove the unsightly pitting? Bear in mind that I am in the UK,

I am trying to get a DECstation 220 working again. It looks like the 80286
is being constantly reset. The reset signal seems to come from an Olivetti
GA099-B chip. I have not been able to find a datasheet for this online. Does
anyone have one, or know where I might find one?
Thanks

A pity this is the wrong the side of the pond and shipping is so expensive,
otherwise I would love to get a 5000/240 or 5000/260 and some 5" drives.

I had a failure of a Corcom filter in my Rainbow, it was a different model
to yours though, it too had failed short. I found a Power Entry Module on
the Farnell site and made a crude panel for it to mount it, just like the
socket you are talking about. I would just look at the datasheet to get the
I have been doing more work on my H7878 PSU for my DECstation 5000 Model
240. It looks like if I put the +5V or -12V outputs under any kind of load
then it stops working. I have posted more details here:

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I will go through them all, although it
may take me a while
On your last point, at first I thought that there isn't any feedback from
the machine. However, apart from a DC OK (which will be an output), there is
a wire labelled "Warning", which could

And the Rainbow isn't "weird hardware"?
:-)
Thanks for that. The slow start one sounds like an interesting avenue to
explore. I have been told some of the capacitors on these tend to be bad.
Finding the capacitor (if it does indeed do a slow start) will be a challenge
for me. I have been reverse engineering the schematic a bit, but some

(s). Once all the pins are broke

I have found a leaked capacitor on my DECstation 5000 Model 240 PSU. The
markings on it are not absolutely clear to me as it is simply marked 10 25.
It looks to be connected to the 12V output, so I *think* this is a 10uF 25V
capacitor. Can anyone confirm this for me from the following pictures?

I want to replace a PLCC84 surface mounted chip and take the opportunity to
socket it.
I have looked at some YouTube videos to see how others have done this. I am
thinking that the best way is going to be to pre-solder the pads on the
socket, place the socket on the board and then heat the
Thanks for all the suggestions, I am still a little undecided on what to do, so
I have a few follow-up questions
1. Pete, you said to use solder paste and associated flux. I had a look on the
Farnell site and there seem to be quite a few different types. I don't really

Just to let everyone know, I have now fixed this PSU. The final write up is
