Re: [cisco-voip] CUCM SU release cycle

2019-08-21 Thread Lelio Fulgenzi

I guess I’m speaking about something like an v11.0 to v12.5 upgrade.

V11.0 only supports: 5.0 U1, 5.1, 5.5, and 6.0
V12.5 only supports: 6.5, 6.7

V11.0 is not that old, and, yes, while they should be on 11.5, they’re not.

An upgrade to 12.5 will be a challenge. Hopefully “bridge” upgrades are
supported.

From what I have seen upgrading in the lab upgrading to 12.5.1.11900-x
(12.5(1)SU1) from almost anything (even from 12.5.1.1-22) should be
considered a major upgrade,
Similar to 8.6 where CUCM went to SELINUX with a new OS install.(especially
true when coming from 11.x since that OS is still redhat)

https://www.ciscolive.com/c/dam/r/ciscolive/us/docs/2018/pdf/BRKUCC-2011.pdf

VMware shows CentOS7 is supported on ESXi 6.0.0 but Cisco says you need 6.5/6.7
(which is true)

11.x is RHEL6, 12.0 is CentOS6, 12.5 is CentOS7 and may involve an ESXi upgrade
prior to upgrading.

Bottom line, upgrade ESXi to 6.5/6.7 prior to attempting UCOS upgrade to
12.5(1)SU1 and you cannot do a fresh install of 12.5SU1 but you can upgrade
from base 12.5.1:

I’m guessing may providers will soon have a backup 5G/6G cellular data option

Cloud is good for some things, IMHO, but not a once size fit all. As we saw
from last year, the cloud is not immune to outages. Unless you are big enough
to get a dedicated circuit, you have QoS issues.

I have yet to see WxTeams work seamlessly on my mobile, the bug is back where
it continues to ring after I answer on elsewhere.

My cloud connected home phone is rock solid (8865 to WxTeams), aside from the
occasional QoS hiccup, but I would get that with any provider, not just Webex.

Would I advise my bigger customers to switch? Not yet. Hybrid calling is good
for now and a properly built UCM cluster just can't be beat if you have a well
built network, etc.

You've hit a few more nails right on the head.

I'll add this, just 'cause it's so much more fun.

On more than one occasion, people have come back from EDU conferences, where
they meet someone who says their system has feature XYZ and their team said it
was easy. So we're asked to implement and given strange looks when we say it's
not as easy as it sounds and needs quite a bit of back end work.

We're very forthcoming in the effort involved in doing something, I'm guessing
other places simply re-priortize and get things done and don't mention the
impact. 😊

I agree on several points you've made. As we continue to "run lean" (meaning,
in some cases, on fumes) and our management and leadership are bombarded with
firms offering to deliver everything we do as a managed service that just
fountains in over the "cloud", the reality of it is that we're compared against
these claims.

We've built here a responsible and flexible service, with which we can offer to
any of our customers a robust set of features. That being said we see on
average a 4% take on features such as SNR, Jabber, etc. We are not aggressive
in our marketing, and at times I'd term it elusive even, so we could do better.
But that means that 95% of people will probably deal with the basics.

That is somewhat what I am trying to prepare us for, not building rube Goldberg
line forwarding and shared line arrangements, and insisting on each customer
having their own extension. I feel like if we switch platforms, or delivery
methods, this will make things easier. Even this has been painful to implement,
and not always practical.

Regarding upgrades, we've limited ourselves to major upgrade windows
biannually, and quarterly for SUs, non-critical COPs, etc. Despite everything
being rubber stamped "24x7" , in reality very few things are. We push our
maintenance to run overnight, or Friday evening into Saturday, and we go from
there. IIRC you were cloning or rebuilding VMs within VMWare and juggling their
connections to try and minimize downtime, but, we've found that as long as
security and physical plant can operate in some regard, no one else really
cares.

Best,

Re: [cisco-voip] CUCM SU release cycle

2019-08-19 Thread Pawlowski, Adam

We push our
maintenance to run overnight, or Friday evening into Saturday, and we go from
there. IIRC you were cloning or rebuilding VMs within VMWare and juggling their
connections to try and minimize downtime, but, we've found that as long as
security and physical plant can operate in some regard, no one else really
cares.

Re: [cisco-voip] CUCM SU release cycle

2019-08-16 Thread Lelio Fulgenzi

This may sound silly, but in reality, it's out of my hands. I can make
recommendations, but it all depends on the strategic decision the organization
takes. Right now, cloud migrations are at the forefront. For a number of
reasons.

Our on-premise deployment has a budgetary lifecycle of peaks and valleys.
They'd rather see that flatlined. That's one thing. The other thing is that it
takes a lot of effort to upgrade systems right now. Not because we don't know
what we're doing, but it simply requires effort and co-ordination. I've had to
argue for the last 25 years that telephone services need special attention.
Case in point, a completely isolated VM infrastructure since that's the only
way we can build those reservations. It's been hard. I think they're sick of
hearing it. Well, they've said they're sick of hearing it.

So if there's a cloud service that gives us 10% of the CUCM feature set and 95%
of what we need. It might be time.

Regarding the SU release cycle, I believe I have heard similar claims before
about cadence and committal to move forward and not maintain old code but I'll
believe it when I see it.

Regarding the cloud services, we're being asked to look too like many shops.
I'm struggling to find the real advantage to doing so, other than for the sake
of it. Most of our customers treat our service like a utility, and if we have
issues we are on it right away. Some don't really care, and that number grows a
bit year over year. No one plans for continuing operations if there are
interruptions, and if we ride over the commercial internet and lose that
service as well people will freak out being cut off.

I'm still trying to work an angle to shift us internally towards user
centricity a bit better. Get accounts for everyone, assign and track resources,
one mailbox, etc. In trying to eliminate the old square/key PBX feel we built
12 years ago out of this system (to replace so many of those ancient key
systems), I'm hoping I can set us up to go forward into telephony applications,
user focused services like Teams, etc which will make the pain easier. That
would also let us get a better grasp on the classes of service that are going
to form between the mission-critical and the yeah-it-would-be-nice-but-I-don't
really-care, which can steer what runs prem or with fallback, and what runs
hosted/cloud/out-of-my-hands.

Only real scare with a lot of these services is the lack of interface and
access for someone like myself who likes APIs, who likes to tinker and build
solutions and systems, instead of operating products.

2019-08-15 Thread Lelio Fulgenzi
I’m hoping that Webex calling will come out with a “video mesh node”
equivalent, so when your WAN link goes down, you have nodes on-premise to
service your phones.

That being said, chances are, that won’t happen. Cisco is going to expect you
to have a “Cloud Ready” network with multiple paths, QoS and peering set up.

I’m guessing may providers will soon have a backup 5G/6G cellular data option
available so if that squirrel finally gets through chewing the fibre, you can
prioritize voice traffic over the wireless backup link.

from last year, the cloud is not immune to outages.

Re: [cisco-voip] CUCM SU release cycle

2019-08-15 Thread Ryan Huff
Anthony,

Slide 20 of the deck from this session
(https://www.ciscolive.com/global/on-demand-library.html?search=cucm%20version&search.event=ciscoliveus2019#/session/1540336593046001DbNj)
makes a loose reference to it in the timeline graphic.

There is a deck out there that gives a deeper explanation (and I'll send it to
you if I have some time to look for it); but it was essentially because the BU
felt features/enhancements were delayed to the field because everyone had a
fear of " .0 " (not a wholly unfounded fear, IMO) and also some marketing jazz
about being more inline with software revisionist trends .. etc.

Yeah, this was the jist. No one liked “dot oh” releases.

It just means people are now going to make up their own upgrade cycle in their
head based on what we hear. Waiting until SU2 maybe? Who knows.

approximately twice a year maximum) but now Cisco is changing to every 2 months?

Re: [cisco-voip] CUCM SU release cycle

2019-08-15 Thread Charles Goldsmith
I didn't see an announcement, was just told about the change, Cisco doesn't
like us waiting for the .5 release to push out to customers. We all know
that the .0 releases have historically been more challenging.

So now, I plan to wait until at least su2 before upgrading :)

Why not just all Major versions all the time? Google Chrome is on version
76.

But seriously though, anyone got a reference to this announcement? I
didn't see it in the cisco live preso linked earlier.

If not, what's the reported reason for dropping minor release numbers?

After 12.5, no more “.5” releases, it’ll just be major versions (and the SUs in
between). After 12.5 we skip 13 and go right to 14 (then presumably, 15 after
that).

Yeah, I think with the move away from the .5 releases, we'll be getting
more SU's and less major releases.
