I guess it’s what works best for you. I have a 3 blade autoprop and trans in forward while under sail is best. The diff between reverse or neutral and forward is increased speed and no propellor noise. For example Sailing to weather at 5.5 in neutral or reverse will almost instantaneously go 6 or

Depending on the transmission the shaft may be allowed to spin or may have to be locked. For fixed blade props allowing the shaft to spin causes less resistance but may not be compatible with your transmission... Then again stopping the shaft be putting it in gear may not be compatible either.

Most (as in "check your transmission manual") transmission manuals call for a neutral gear, when sailing. Iirc, Yanmar had a special bulletin where they said that if you don't sail in neutral, they would void your warranty (like this really matters for our boats). Marek Original
